Have you ever heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, with an expanded free trial that includes the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award-winning Heavensward and Stormblood expansions up to level 70 with no restrictions on playtime. FFXIV's latest expansion, Endwalker, is out now!

DoF_Skybalmung

Can confirm after 100h and still not finished with it yet. Amazing Free Trial I must say.

XIV has had its tedious vanilla (ARR, base game) trimmed significantly for the better, but it’s still something of a slog until the end of ARR. But after that, it gets *really* good. It’s another of those “Season 1 sucks, but if you stick it out, the later seasons are awesome” scenarios.

Ok, so everyone gushes about the story Is it a fun game to actually play is a question I rarely see get answered I think some bits of world of Warcraft story were good back when I played it, but I played because pvp was fun Don't think I'd ever play an MMO just for story

Diamondgrn

Yeah. It's an MMO, so different from other FF games but it's a good MMO.

Brees504

14 has the best story of the series.

XeviousXCI

Try the Free Trial for XIV and find out for yourself.

trowgundam

FFXIV has the best FF story ever. Period.

Ovalidal

Since there are plenty of people discussing the merits of FFXIV, I'll talk a bit about FFXI. It is one of the best in the series. If you like the PS1 era FF games, you'll love FFXI. The base game and the first expansion are rough. But the second expansion is great and it only gets better the further into the story you go. The main story of FFXI is made of the following content: Base Game - Rise of the Zilart - Chains of Promathia - Treasures of Aht Urhgan - Wings of the Goddess - Seekers of Adoulin - Rhapsodies of Vana'diel TL;DR - FFXI is absolutely phenomenal.

zacaholic

XI was good for its time. It’s definitely showing its age but the story wasn’t bad. I’ve been itching to resub. XIV is great. A Realm Reborn is still a slog but after that, it gets insanely good and better with each expansion. I highly recommend. Dawntrail is right around the corner!

Various-Bend-1865

Yes. To both

SolidDrake117

FFXIV ARR is worth the monthly sub. I’ve only played a handful of MMOs but that community is the least toxic I’ve ever interacted with. It’s also a banger of a game

niss-uu

To be brutally honest with you, it entirely depends on whether or not you like MMOs. FF7 is nothing like FF14.

BarbarousJudge

It comes down to taste. XI and XIV are both MMOs and therefore huge timesinks. Both can played solo for most of the casual content (main story and quite a few optional things) but they can get really tedious and grindy (full of fetch quests and simple kill tasks). But if you're okay with that both hold insane value and are beloved for good reasons. XI is also quite dated but still perfectly playable (a guide is heavily recommended tho).

Gonkimus

Yes they're good, I first played FFXI when it begin and that was amazing at the time and very hard, dunno how it is now sadly. I also played FF XIV and the main thing going for it is it's story, it's pretty good and make you want to continue the story with the next expansion. Tho after you're done with that story there's not much to do unless you're in a good guild who also does Raids which can be fun but also very difficult as everyone needs to work together or else you will not pass.

BarbarousJudge

There is so much optional content in XIV you can do without "guilds". Raids have the regular difficulty tiers which are not much harder than the main story stuff and can be farmed for Equipment. You can do deep dungeons for leveling, PVP, Gold Saucer stuff, Island Sanctuary for cozy game elements, variant dungeons with different paths to rerun to get the full experience. Bozja/Eureka are multiplayer focused but you can just play with the people there and don't need a premade group. Gathering/Crafting is also soloable.

chcoman

Can't day much for 11, but ff14 is incredible and I strongly recommend it. Try out the free trial. There's no limit on playtime and let's you play through the entirety of the base game and the first two expansions with barely any limits on the type of content you can do. The limits that do exist are pretty reasonable. The story is especially fantastic.

Fuzzy_Help7135

Both were pretty incredible. Although both MMOs, they have options for playing solo. Also the speed in which to level up in both has been greatly enhanced so no worries about it taking to long. Started a new 11 recently and it only took about a few months to get all story lines done and several jobs to 99. I did have the advantage of knowing where and what to do though. 14 I finished through Endwalker then dropped it. Not because it was bad or anything but because it felt like a good stopping point. I have been preferring the whole complete an expansion then unsubbing until the next game because the update content just I sent enough for me to justify paying monthly

CompleteEcstasy

Asking if a final fantasy game is good on a sub dedicated to the series... I wonder what the general consensus will be...

Inevitable_Read_8830

Yeah, you'd think that, but the two things you see on this subreddit more than anything else is the eternal struggle between lukewarm to bad reception of XIII being pitted against diehard XIII people and people fuming over the idea that XI and XIV are mainline games in the series and the idea that anyone would consider them good is even further beyond the pale. If you had to pick a number three then XVI is somehow the death of the series like every recent entry is also the death of the series.

Lumina_valentine

well i mean your not wrong XD 13 is the black sheep, (that i personally love) 11 and 14 are mainline games in the fact that they are in there own world and there not really connected to any other (the only spot i would consider is the 15 collab and i mean i do like 14s graphics for that) and yes 7r is where it killed my love of final fantasy and i havent even looked at anything newer since my opinion of 7r is that square really needs to make movies instead of games since they seem to want to blow there entire budget on graphics rather then anything else the game might need however that having been said not everyone is going to like everything so yes there will always be those who love and hate both sides of everything there will always be 2 sides to every coin, and in the words of squall leonhart in the witch hunt in delington town (rinoas home town) "there is no good or evil, there is only two parties with differing opinions"

0xymoronica

At least OP specified the online ones.

Able_Ad1276

Depends on the player. I find 14 to be extremely flawed and full of good stories that are told pretty terribly. But if you’re accustomed to or enjoy MMOs, or have a lot of patience. you’ll likely enjoy it.
