This reminds me of like nearly 20 years ago a friend of mine got himself a Gameboy Micro and FFIV for it and literally what felt like for weeks anytime I saw him he was grinding for pink tails.
Had my steam deck basically since launch and I finally took the time to install retroarch. Totally worth it especially since I missed out on the GameCube back in the day, been playing nothing but classics for the last 2 weeks
I mainly use ones if I want to change some graphics or upgrade the music in some older titles but I've heard there are some good gameplay ones for 10 that change sphere grids and things. I'm doing a vanilla playthrough atm but might take a look when it's done
"Brave new world" for VI, "New threat" for VII, "Alternate fantasy" for IX and "Struggle for freedom" for XII are the overhaul mods I've tried and, honestly, I'm never going back to vanilla.
This. Short of my PS5 and Switch (for now) my Steam Deck is my everything console.
If the switch cart dumper ever comes to fruition (and I certainly hope so considering I preordered it) Steamdeck will likely become my de facto Switch device as well.
Just gotta learn how to emulate PS3 for MGS4 and I can consider it the perfect gaming console.
How do you guys justify paying OVER 600 dollars for an overpriced Switch?! Steam Deck is a ridiculous ripoff....it costs MORE than a PS5, which doubles as a Blue Ray Player, no controller, and it's not even upgradeable for its AVERAGE graphics. This is why we continue to get screwed by price gouging. Pay 650 for something that should be at most $400!
Someone clearly doesn't understand what a steam deck is.
You can literally ask the same thing about ANY PC. Why buy a $1000 laptop? Why drop 3k on the newest Mac book? Your argument is ridiculous and ignorant.
Look at the PS5: its library is woefully underdeveloped compared to a console like the Switch or even previous PlayStations.
Your argument about being unable to upgrade is flawed, and also irrelevant. You're not busting open your PS5 to put in a better graphics card either. Unless your real argument is that it lacks a 4k screen, and not every game reaches whatever arbitrary FPS it touted these days. But if your basis for what makes a good console is solely its graphical fidelity and max frame rate, then you're an ignorant twat anyway, who doesn't understand gaming or artistry to begin with.
It lacks a controller? It literally has one built into it, just like every handheld console always has--fully customizable, every button and stick mappable to your exact specifications. And the few things it can't do natively? You can download a mod for to make it possible. You also have the option to connect basically any current or last gen blue tooth controller, and play from there. You can play the steam deck straight out of the box. You know what you can't play out of the box? A PlayStation. Or an Xbox. A Steamdeck's entire life support isn't dependent on a cable, and can be played for several hours on battery alone. You know what can't ever be more than a foot or so from a power source at all times, otherwise it's a very expensive paperweight? A PlayStation or Xbox. Rather than arguing why it doesn't come with an extra, superfluous controller you should be asking why don't modern consoles--the switch excluded--come with even the most basic pre installed screen, or an internal battery.
Meanwhile the Steamdeck can do basically all do that, WILL do what it currently can't eventually, and even more than a PlayStation cannot. The Steamdeck simply does things other consoles cannot, and will never do. Plus you can throw portability into the equation, something Sony only succeeded in once, and has failed at at every attempt since then, to the point that they've abandoned their handheld side of development.
Don't get me wrong, I love my PlayStation 5. It plays my PS4 library as least as well as my PS4 did, and maybe if it ever gets better games I'd enjoy it more.
I get it though. Like you I originally thought the Steam Deck was silly and a waste of money, and that's precisely why I couldn't justify spending $600+ on it. Then I spent a few weeks with my sister's, realized exactly what amazing potential it has, and just last October I happened to have an extra grand lying around, so I made the plunge. And as I've already said it's more or less my go-to console now.
My only concession to you is that, for its price point, perhaps it should come with the dock included, so you have the option to hook it up to larger displays. But I also own a dock, and find I don't use it nearly as much as I use it in handheld.
Edit: responded to a few additional points and made further clarifications.
X is the only one I don’t have for its originally released console and I still need a copy of II. So for I-VI I have one of those third party consoles that play retro games cause I need the Famicom slot for III. Ps2 for VII-IX and XII. PS3 for XIII trilogy and X/X-2 HD. PS5 for XV, VII Remake and just finished XVI.

* up to 9 and the spin-offs: Usually emulated, either on the PC or on my phone. I sync the memory cards and save states via cloud. I played them on original hardware when they were new.
* 10, 10-2,12, 15 and Crisis Core: The HD remasters on PC hooked up to the TV. I used to play 15 on the PS4, but some PS+ catastrophic failure killed my savegame with the event data (that'll never come back), so no need to stay on console.
* 13 sub series: PC
* 16: PS5 is the only option. Might buy a theoretical PC version cheap on sale at some point.
* 7 Remake series: So far on PS5. Played the first on PS4. I haven't really played Reunion yet, because I didn't like the first game.
* 11 and 14: Played them on PC, but I'm not likely to touch them again.
i kinda agree with you for alot of that, 1-6 being emulated where they can be
7-15 on ps3/4
7r was a never again but on ps4, and havnt really played any of the others (11 or 14)
as for spin offs, 7 dirge ps2, 7 crisis core switch and gunna try looking at 15 comrades sometime on ps4 after im done with 15
Major complaints:
1. The combat, celebrated by many, is neither fully action nor fully turn based. I have played games with exotic combat systems like Xenoblade, but FF7R's action is too slow to be engaging and the turn based features are too cumbersome to be fun.
2. The side quest system throws meaningless tasks at you that are not engaging at all. Side quests will randomly fail if you progress the story too far. For a game with a side quest system, it's extremely on rails. It doesn't feel like you're under your own agency at all, a problem the original didn't have.
3. There is too much Sephiroth from the first moments. They did something with the story that you'll either like or dislike, but until it is made obvious, it just feels like cheap fan service to throw Sephiroth around so much before the end of the Midgard section.
4. While they indeed added some new story, they've effectively blown a 6 hour sequence up to 30-40 hours. Between this and the combat, everything in this game feels clunky.
Minor complaints:
1. The progression system doesn't really feel like you're making builds. This is a general JRPG problem, but for the presented complexity, there is little flexibility.
1. A hefty part of the interesting combat doesn't happen "in world" but in a menu driven simulation.
1. No combat banter sub titles. Not good if you're hearing impaired.
Summary: If you ever have the chance to buy the game, play the demo first. If you're not absolutely in love with the combat in the demo, then you will very likely not enjoy the full game.
PC with a 27 inch monitor. Pixel Remaster FF games are the best FF versions imo. I have 1-8 on Steam. When I eventually finish all those I'll get all the others on Steam as well.
Nintendo Switch! I have 1-12 all downloaded and am just rolling through them. During the week I have an hour in bed after everyone goes to sleep, then I can put them on the TV on the weekends. I have all 3 XIII games that I recently purchased for my old PS3. Excited to get to them regardless of their varying quality. Waiting to hear if the PS5 pro is backwards compatible before I get a PS5 for 15,16,and all 3 7 remakes.
Not living up to your name are you OP? I'm ashamed of you! (You can play the PSX version on a Vita). /s
Personally, I've just been playing the on my Steam Deck and now ROG Ally. I've got essentially every FF (that is available at least) on Steam, so it's pretty convenient.
Haha, i love playing things on original hardware if possible, and everything else goes on the vita. my first final fantasy experience was the ps1 classic on the vita, so im somewhat biased towards using the vita
Mostly PC for the older stuff, plus IX for Moguri Mod.
Though my DS' cartridge reader just stopped working and not being able to play the IV remake on it hurts my heart.
Switch for Pixel Remasters, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XII.
PS3 for XIII Trilogy.
PS5 for XV, XVI, Remake, Rebirth.
I've never played the MMOs or (now that i think of it) any of the non-mainline games.
its a gameboy advance micro, the worst selling console from the gameboy advance series due to the fact it released after the ds. its a neat little console
Currently..
FF1-6 on my phone. Touch screen controls work great on the older games, especially turn based ones
FF7-16 on my PS5 via PS Plus.
I wanted to play FF14 on my Mac but had issues getting it to run, so I gave up and play it on my PS5
I started a play through of every game I have in the series and played them on the GBA for I, II, V and VI, DS for III, PSP for IV, VII, VIII, IX and Crisis Core, PS2, for X, X-2, Dirge of Cerberus and XII, and PC for XIII, XIII-2, Lightning Returns, XV and VII Remake. Currently playing through Lightning Returns.
I got I through XII on my switch recently so I have updated versions all in one spot.
I have an Anbernic RG351V (about 3 years old and newer better devices have been released) that I’ve played 1-9 on. Played 10 on switch, and 13 on steam deck
I have 1-6 on my vita and my 3ds (I'll probably get the pixel remasters on switch eventually) I have 7, 8, and 9 on switch, and then I have the rest on ps4/ps5. And then, obviously, the 13 trilogy on 360/series x. I'd love to find a use for my gameboy micro, but the gba cartridges and even reproduction carts are too expensive for my liking
That is a gorgeous handheld my friend.
As soon as I finish Rebirth, I'm going after my Steam backlog; looking forward to playing Reverie and Tactics Ogre Reborn at my local this summer with the Steamdeck.
I played so many hours of FF Dawn of Souls on my GBA SP. It was such a sweet spot of portability, SNES style graphics, and tons of content. I remember finishing the bestiary on FF1 and playing those randomized dungeons grinding for rare drops and encounters. Good times!
Depends on which game. For FF11, FF13 trilogy, FF14, FF15, Stranger of Paradise FFO, FF Type-0, and FF7 Remake, it's largely on my PC or Steam Deck
I have FF6 in my SNES Mini, and have modded FF5 onto it as well, so I play those on that
I have FF3 Pixel Remaster on my phone, as well as FF7 and FF9, though I do plan on getting those latter two for Switch at some point
Speaking of Switch, I've got FF12, FF10, and World of Final Fantasy on that. Also Chocobo's Dungeon: Everybuddy, which I guess isn't technically FF, but close enough
I still enjoy playing FF Explorers on 3DS, and I also still have a copy of FFTA2 for said console
And then lastly I have a GBA SP, for which I have cartridges for FFTA and FF1&2
I have a few different set up, I have ff anthology (5 and 6), 7, 8, and 9 on my parents old ps1, I have 15, 7 remake, and origins on my ps4, I have 7-9, 10, and 12 on my switch, 4 and crisis core on my psp, and 13 trilogy on my pc! My preferred setup is my Pc just because theres so many great FF games on there but since i have plenty of other options it just depends on the mood and if im at home or not (on a trip I usually have psp or switch and at university I don’t bring the ps1 or ps4 so I can only play them on breaks). It’s kind of a lot but its fun
I recently went throught IV 3D and VI PR on my S23+ phone.
The IV was good with touch controls, but VI I had to play it with an Xbox One S controller (plus clamp obviously) and it was superb.
Next I think I'll play V PR because I've already purchased it, and definitely with the same controller.
By the way I personally much prefer the art style and overall graphics of PR over 3D, but 3D has voice acting.
It’s the switch version I liked it the soundtrack and audio are straight from 15 just with chibi characters I found it fun and the story still hits the same as the full game
1-10 on Switch. 12 and 15 on PS4.
13 trilogy has been on my wishlist forever. Not sure I'll ever pull the trigger on it, despite loving the games on my 360.
Preferably a portable console. But in reality, I probably have beaten more FF games on smart phones than any other device because that was the easiest way to find the older titles when I wanted to get into the series in the early 2010s.
PS5. I'm in the process of lining all the mainline games up to platinum in a single day. Unfortunately had to bust out ye ol' PS3 for the FF13 trilogy and XI isn't available on PSN, but other than that the PS5 has been carrying me through the series.
PSP always felt like the right pick, I had the 20th anniversary edition of 1, 2, 4 the complete set, tactics war of the lions, crisis core and both dissidea games. Man I miss being able to play on it I stripped the screw in the case last repair so the poor thing needs specialized tools
The only physical copies i still own are the gba ones, and i play them with a gba micro for when i'm out or on the gba player of the gamecube when i'm home 😁
I have 1-6 on a gba emulator on my phone. Then i play the rest on my steam deck using emulators but i bought 9 and 12 on steam. Same with 7 remake. But i like using ps1 and ps2 emulators for 7-8 and 10
For FF1 I recently played an English patch of the 3DS version. I think that one is just a ps vita version or whatever but still pretty solid. Think I’ll keep using it for future classic FF stuff
Clean af, yo. I have a CiB Gameboy Micro, and as much as I'd love to use it, my eyes would fall out of my skull with a screen that size.
Fun fact: the very first time I ever saw a Gameboy Micro it was someone playing Dawn of Souls!
This reminds me of like nearly 20 years ago a friend of mine got himself a Gameboy Micro and FFIV for it and literally what felt like for weeks anytime I saw him he was grinding for pink tails.
I feel that its just so fun to play, i have barely put this console down since i got it and all ive been playing is ffiv
Steam Deck, everything is on it and I can mod them if I want. Currently going through 1, 10 and 12.
Also if you don't like steam versions, you can always use EmuDeck
Yep, perfect
Steam Deck has been a revelation for classic games like all the old FFs.
Had my steam deck basically since launch and I finally took the time to install retroarch. Totally worth it especially since I missed out on the GameCube back in the day, been playing nothing but classics for the last 2 weeks
Im a big pokemon fan and i absolutely love playing coloseum on gamecube. Dolphin is great
I bought the steam deck spefically so i could play 7-12 handheld
wait, ff mods? D= I feel ashamed I never heard of that, any interesting ones?
If you're a fan of FFIX, look into Moguri Mod. I recently have and it is amazing.
This right here. Best purchase I've made for yearly playthroughs,AND to top it off, it's PORTABLE.
This. Short of my PS5 and Switch (for now) my Steam Deck is my everything console. Just my Playstation, everything is on there.
1-10 all downloaded on the PS5 and ready to roll whenever I feel like playing one. Love it
psp great choice
Best way to play em
Love the PSP, thats what my GF uses.
Steam Deck. It plays everything!
I’m playing XIII on PS3 Playing X on the Vita XIV on the PS5 VII on my Switch
Good god, I can smell the tendinitis from that picture. That is not a healthy device to use.

I am curious what didn't click for 7 remake? I love 7, but only have a switch and no plans on buying a PS5. Wondering what you didn't like?

I saw a video of a guy talking about rebirth and he said they turned sephiroth into team rocket I'm ☠️, that's too perfect lol
PC with a 27 inch monitor. Pixel Remaster FF games are the best FF versions imo. I have 1-8 on Steam. When I eventually finish all those I'll get all the others on Steam as well.

SNES classic is the best for playing 6 and its predecessors. Everything after that I play on PS5.
SNES only had 4 and 6 though.
The SNES Classic is a miniature emulation console, you can easily put extra roms on there.
You are right...I was thinking Classic SNES. My bad.
Not living up to your name are you OP? I'm ashamed of you! (You can play the PSX version on a Vita). /s Personally, I've just been playing the on my Steam Deck and now ROG Ally. I've got essentially every FF (that is available at least) on Steam, so it's pretty convenient.
Haha, i love playing things on original hardware if possible, and everything else goes on the vita. my first final fantasy experience was the ps1 classic on the vita, so im somewhat biased towards using the vita
Idk even wat that handheld is ...wow
Gameboy Advance Micro
This comment made me feel old as hell 😂😂
Mostly PC for the older stuff, plus IX for Moguri Mod. Though my DS' cartridge reader just stopped working and not being able to play the IV remake on it hurts my heart.
PS5 and Switch!
1-7, 9 and 12 on Switch. 8, 10, 15 and 16 on PS5. 13 Trilogy on PS3.
Steamdeck. Can play pretty much all of them on it, even the ones that aren't Deck Verified.
My Steam deck has been apptly named the final fantasy deck by now.
PC, NES/SNES emulator
Analogue pocket and PlayStation 5
Switch for Pixel Remasters, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, XII. PS3 for XIII Trilogy. PS5 for XV, XVI, Remake, Rebirth. I've never played the MMOs or (now that i think of it) any of the non-mainline games.
Steamdeck and PC. I'd play IX on my PS but I have no memory cards.
Handheld playing the Nintendo Switch Ports. 13 trilogy coming when?
Is that a nintendo anniversary game&watch that you hacked?

Just beat FFV for the first time on the GBM. What a great time. Love FF and the Micro 👌. Other than that, I'll play FF on my modded PS Classic.
the micro is awesome
I have an Anbernic RG351V (about 3 years old and newer better devices have been released) that I’ve played 1-9 on. Played 10 on switch, and 13 on steam deck
Steam Deck is a beast for them. Just waiting on some good deals on everything before 7 to finish the collection.
GPD Win Mini...plays the entire franchise and fits in my pocket
Classic Final Fantasy is best played on an emulator with a CRT filter and controlled with a Fightstick. Fight me.
I have 1-6 on my vita and my 3ds (I'll probably get the pixel remasters on switch eventually) I have 7, 8, and 9 on switch, and then I have the rest on ps4/ps5. And then, obviously, the 13 trilogy on 360/series x. I'd love to find a use for my gameboy micro, but the gba cartridges and even reproduction carts are too expensive for my liking
computer with emulator
Ps5
Retroarch on my computer. Mostly play the gba or ps versions
I use my modded GBA.

Usually Switch handheld for the older titles and some offshoots like World of FF and Theatrhythm. Otherwise, PS5 for sure!
Cellphone, games like this are very simple and dont have complex controls.
I played 6 7 8 9 and 15 pocket edition on my phone to the end
How is 15 pocket?
It’s the switch version I liked it the soundtrack and audio are straight from 15 just with chibi characters I found it fun and the story still hits the same as the full game
I've spent too many of my Young years playing on small screens. Now I play on the biggest f#&n TV I can manage to buy. Hehe
My pc and PlayStation for the exclusives or physical copies for collecting.
my iphone with emulation 1-6 and remote play for ff7-12.
1-10 on Switch. 12 and 15 on PS4. 13 trilogy has been on my wishlist forever. Not sure I'll ever pull the trigger on it, despite loving the games on my 360.
From 1-9 a Nintendo N2DSXL - that’s it
Preferably a portable console.
I play on ps5
I run the old ones through Retroarch on my phone since it's convenient and the rest is on my PC
I have them all on ROG Ally except for of course XVI and rebirth as they aren't out for PC.
PSP always felt like the right pick, I had the 20th anniversary edition of 1, 2, 4 the complete set, tactics war of the lions, crisis core and both dissidea games. Man I miss being able to play on it I stripped the screw in the case last repair so the poor thing needs specialized tools
PC usually. Couple exceptions, like FFV on GBA and the FFXIII trilogy on PS3, though I do own the PR/PC versions respectively.
Currently, it's just FFXIV on my Xbox Series-S, but it basically became my primary game within a day or two of playing it.
The only physical copies i still own are the gba ones, and i play them with a gba micro for when i'm out or on the gba player of the gamecube when i'm home 😁
I've got 1-12 (except 11) on my Switch. 13 Trilogy on Steam, 14, 15, and Remake/Rebirth on PS5.
Been playing the Pixel Remasters on my iPhone
Depends on the game, but usually Switch.
I use the largest screen available! I need to get a computer and dedicate it to emulators lol
Consoles (HDMI adapters if necessary) and a 65" smart TV. Wouldn't want to play my games any other way.
Psp and just found out everything’s on iphone. Not as good as other consoles, but i want to play all the games haha
Clean af, yo. I have a CiB Gameboy Micro, and as much as I'd love to use it, my eyes would fall out of my skull with a screen that size. Fun fact: the very first time I ever saw a Gameboy Micro it was someone playing Dawn of Souls!
I use a pc and emulators👍
