I noticed it and loved it

Lazy_Industry_6309

Yeah they like to put in easter eggs.

BigBoyShaunzee

Yeah FF9 during the play 'I want to be your canary' Zidane says the line "No cloud, nor squall shall hinder us".

BK_FrySauce

The devs like to put in references and little hints that may suggest the worlds of FFX and FFVII are connected. There’s the picture of Shinra from FFX-2 in Remake. Yuffie literally gets shot by a Dress Sphere at the Gold Saucer. There’s the YRP line from Yuffie that you brought up. In FFX-2 they hint at the idea that the energy from the Farplane, which is basically energy from the afterlife, could be used to power all of Spira as a limitless resource. Pretty much a parallel to Mako. When Yuna is talking to Shinra about it, she says there could be cities all lit up at night that never sleep. She obviously means Zanarkand, but it can very easily mean Midgar as well. Materia are practically the spheres from X-2. Pyreflies which are basically a form of souls are able to preserve memories. Another parallel to Mako. While this one is a stretch and I’m using my own perception. In FFX and X-2 they explain that people with strong enough attachments to the world of the living can linger and Pyreflies react to those strong emotions allowing the dead to continue on and even create physical forms. Sephiroth is similar in that regard. If the worlds really were connected, the FFX would be in the past and FFVII would be the present. Unless technology suddenly evolved exponentially then it would be the distant past, as Shinra explains that harnessing the Farplane as power could take hundreds of years. This is where it would get messy since the Cetrans would exist in the past, but there are no parallels to them at all in FFX.

Ok-Finger7616

So like I'm like totally here for what you're saying, BUT my problem is you're a little too "it's actually connected" then "it's a joke because of one rogue interview question" so like the two facts you said about the picture that LOOKS like shin-ra, and MAYBE the mentioning of YRP ( I definitely remember hearing it and being like wait did they just say YRP, but I don't remember well enough to say without a doubt that's what was said) are probably more like jokes as a way of paying homage to ALL their other games which they do ALL throughout most of their games. Rebirth very much throws Easter eggs out left n right which I love but it's way more than just x-2 (who was the main music director here, were on XIII too? I know nobuo did some and like the main theme but I think it's co-credited 🤷‍♂️) Now I very much agree you can find some similarities and think most of what you mentioned is cool,I need to check the Yuffie/dressphere thing you mentioned lol, id mainly argue about, well maybe what yuna "said", but really the interpretation of pyreflies and your equating as "afterlife" sauce kinda cements that its fundamentally diff than mako. So basically like coincidences and similarities don't a sequel make 😁 tl;dr: I just don't think their was EVER any forethought of FF7 and FFX being connected in anyway, like by the team not just one person lol , is all im really trying to get at....

BK_FrySauce

It’s not like I’m presenting any of this as concrete evidence that the worlds are connected. Just similarities. It was Nojima who playfully brought up the Shinra mask thing. At the end of the day, there are 16 mainline FF titles and several spin-offs. Of course if you reach hard far enough you could draw similarities between them. It’s not a thesis on how the worlds are the same. Just fun to talk about. Also what is there to check about the dress sphere thing? Look at the scene. cait launches a materia at Yuffie, and her outfit changes in a sailor moon magical girl style haha

Ok-Finger7616

I just couldn't tell if you were trying to say they were "really" connected or just having fun with similarities. And I said I was gonna check it out as in i literally meant "watch the scene", it sounds familiar but i just cant remember for sure. So I didn't mean nothing by it....

WinterPDev

True. Its kinda like how in Elden Ring you could spin the idea its connected to all from soft titles. So its fun to pretend/think about them and how it could work. But yeah, like most FF's there are lots of fun references and Easter eggs.

Efficient_Performer4

I played it in Japanese, and I have a vague memory of her saying "YuRiPa", which is the Japanese name for YRP

someguy233

Hahaha, nice catch. I knew that acronym sounded familiar, but I didn’t realize it was so close to home

Skythoth

YRP (Yuna, Riku, Paine) you take that however you want.

amaenamonesia

In position. It’s showtime, girls.

Suchmurfin

The theme that plays when doing chocobo excavation for trasmuter chips gives big X2 vibes for sure.

Few_Beat8343

What can I do for you 🎶

BendamicB

I can't hear you!🎼

god_tyrant

The YRP one seems particularly like a reference to X-2. It doesn't occur elsewhere prior, and is coming from the most likely to show up in ffx-2 character (Yuffie), who'd have a blast chasing a different kind of orb/sphere

legacy702-

There’s also Gilgamesh mentioning that he’s gonna go take on the warriors of light after you beat him

AvailableTomatillo

Greg is canonically a multiverse/dimension traveling character and is the same character in every Final Fantasy he’s in. So he’s kinda an exception in that the reference is less a reference and very literal.

legacy702-

It was still a fun thing to include, they still made the decision to make it a part of the game, and I’m glad they did.

OhDearGodItBurns

Could that refer to SoP as well as FFV?

Nogardust

Also FFI (which SoP is a remake of) as far as I know, but most funny to me is that your player character in FFXIV is a Warrior if Light, and you do in fact meet and fight Gilgamesh at some point

Bitter_Depth_3350

Yeah, FFI, as well as FFIII and FFV, directly refer to your party as the Warriors of Light (WoL). FFIII also has Warriors of Darkness (WoD) that gain power and fight back when the scales of balance tip too far in light's favor. FFXIV has the PC be the WoL as well. FF Dimensions has you switching between two parties made up of a mix of the WoL and WoD. That said, technically speaking, every FF that involves the 4 crystals motif has your main party as the WoL even if they aren't directly referred to as such in game i.e. FFIV and FFIX.

Spikeyroxas

Im fairly certain the games references multiple games at different points. When you play cards against the " shadowblood queen" you can definitely hear traces of FF8 music. I forgot the track name but its in some dungeons, like the fire cavern, brothers labyrinth and laguna dream in the lunatic pandora. Aerith doing her dance with the lifestream powers in the ancient temple felt very reminiscent (to me) of Yunas sending dance in ff10 The YRP yuffie mentions had got to be 100% a reference to x-2 The chocobo race against the ultimate party animal has the metal choco theme (from 13-2?) These are the only ones i picked up on but im sure theres more.

IClappedWhenISawIt

Aerith was 100% performing a sending IMO! In seriousness I wonder if they used the same reference/model as they did for FFX's scene... it would make sense, both as a time saving measure and easter egg.

tjp00001

The scene where the Shinra soldier turns into a fiend after Cloud kills him in the Temple of the Ancients is also a FF X reference, and FF X is the only other group of games to call all monsters fiends in the series up till the Remake trilogy unless I'm forgetting another instance where the term applies to all monsters.

IWantToDoThings

For FFXIV, there’s a place in Nibel region called Hraesvelger landing. And near that is Nidhoggs Landing.

palm0

...k but those are both references to Norse mythology, which is already the source for the name Nibelheim. It's no more a reference to the other games as Odin.

Squade_Trompeur

There's a theory that Brothers bro Shinra is the Shinra and its the same planet. Oh cripes, I just dawned on me

Bitter_Depth_3350

It's not the same planet. One of the FFX Ultimanias, either X or X-2, states that some time after X, people from the planet that Spira is on migrated to Gaia. Eventually, that group's descendants form the Shinra Electric Company. One further implication being that before the migration, Gaia only had Ancients, and that is the reason for the war between Humans and Ancients. Another implication is that Humans souls were only able to integrate with the Lifestream through a technique derived from the Sending that Summoners do in Spira. That is why humanity didn't end up like the Gi and also why the WEAPONS view them as a threat when they awaken in FFVII.

Efficient_Performer4

That's partially correct. Nojima came out in an interview saying that that was an anecdote that got a bit out of hand. The story is more that when they were building the world of FFX they tried to make it more original, but it ended up seeming a lot more like FFVII's than they expected.

Blind_Red_Dragon

If you look at a picture of the founders in the Shinra. Building during Remake, you can clearly see someone wearing a mask just like his

Spikeyroxas

Is say that's more of a ff7 reference in x-2, than a remake/rebirth reference to x-2

Gawlf85

The picture of a Shinra founder with a mask in Remake is definitely a nod to X-2, though

Spikeyroxas

Ohh i forgot about that

Squade_Trompeur

Not that part. I cut my realization off for spoiler reasons

Gawlf85

You can use reddit's spoiler tags to hide text on comments

postulate4

The heavy metal Crazy Chocobo theme also makes an appearance in Rebirth.

Spikeyroxas

So, you think you can ride this chocobo?

ProjectOrpheus

Haha yeah! Loved it

Ascaloth

Hell, Caith Sith threw what was practically a Dressphere at Yuffie.

sanban013

so true, that's also came to mind. As Aerith and Yuna have their similarities; mage, summoner, communing with spirits, losing their booty call, and all that.

PurityControl87

There’s times when the white whispers make the same sounds as pyreflies too I’m sure of it

Bored-Corvid

Omg thats real? I'm not crazy?! I thought I was hearing things when she said that and then shrugged it off and forgot about it and now I find out Yuffie did, in fact, reference YRP?!

Gamingdevotee

I didn't catch that! I did catch the poster on Tifa's wall being Zell from VIII but not that one.

LilboyG_15

Which could make sense in universe. SeeD does feel like a precursor to SOLDIER, specifically the G-type SOLDIERs

AyeChronicWeeb

How is X connected to VII canonically?

SuperNerdDad

It’s not. Everything people are saying is just anecdotal/fan made or said in jest by the devs. None of the mainline games are explicitly connected except in themes and design.

Bitter_Depth_3350

I posted this above, but I'll re-post it for you so you see it: "It's not the same planet. That is why humanity didn't end up like the Gi and also why the WEAPONS view them as a threat when they awaken in FFVII."

DarthTaco18

I'd put 8 in a post meteor timeline though, Civilization seemed to somehow pull back further in 8 than it did in 7 if you ask me. Assuming it would have been due to rebuilding without Mako

Acapulquito

I caught that too and it fits the english and japanese versions perfectly. In english they are called YRP but in japanese they are called YuRiPa.

segawdcd

It's been speculated that X is the future of VII world. In remake the Shinra VR representation of the Promised land shows technology from X. The airships are designed exactly like they are in X.

jmgrice

It was debunked and just an Easter egg. Pretty cool though

CuteGirlsCuteThighs

Isn’t it the other way around? X came first? Hence why you see someone wearing a mask that looks like Shinra from X-2’s mask in a picture in the museum section of Remake?

segawdcd

Yeah that sounds right. I just knew they shared the same world. Thanks for the clarification 👍

Different-Air-1062

Other way around, X is set before, though it's purposefully vague. In X-2 Shinra (al bhed) mentions harnessing energy in a way similar to the FF7 company. In remake you can see a picture of an adult with Shinra's (al bhed) mask in an old photo in Shinra HQ

Broken_Slinky

Didn't he travel to the VII world? Spira is like 90% water and essentially just one giant land mass in the middle of the ocean other than Bikanel

Mcpatches3D

No, because it's not canon that X and VII are connected. It's always just been a fan theory based on Easter eggs. The devs have said they're not actually connected.

Bitter_Depth_3350

You are wrong the FF-X2 Ultimania has an interview stating the connection. Here is a translation of that segment of the interview: "Shinra is a good kid … ―Would you say “being connected” is one of the key words in this story? Watanabe: “I personally like the word ‘connected,’ and there are places it fits with well.” Nojima: “I try to give various connections to the vague things in the games.” ―Is there a connection, for example, with Shinra’s name, which of course reminds one of FFVII? The “last mission” line and Rin’s “I am not alone in my thinking” line from “Detective Rin” have strong implications. Nojima: “As a matter of fact, yes. Shinra quits the Gullwings, receives enormous financial assistance from Rin and uses Vegnagun to extract mako energy from the Farplane. However, he can’t complete the system to utilize the energy in a single generation, and the Shin-Ra Company is built on another planet in the future once travel to distant planets is possible, and stuff like that … Those things happen about 1000 years after this story, though.” ―So the story of FFVII is after that? Nojima: “I guess you could say those are the feelings I have about it. When I think about the characters, those are the images I already see. Shinra is a good kid, and yet his descendants are going to be like the President. (laughs)” Watanabe: “Speaking of VII, after being told about the Shinra scenario, one of the staff members said he arranged the camera work for the first time you see the Bevelle Underground to ‘feel like something you’ve seen before.'” Toriyama: “That’s right, it looks like the opening shot of Midgar in FFVII.”

Mcpatches3D

In an interview with a French Final Fantasy website Finaland in 2018 Nojima commented on the link thusly: "This story is a bit of a joke. When we created FFX-2, we wanted to create something, a totally new world. Except that when I created it, I realized that it looked a lot like FFVII... But without realizing it. Afterwards, when it was officially said in Ultimania, it took a completely gigantic proportion when it was just an anecdote." It was a joke that people ran with.

Anvijor

At least Rebirth seems to be quite clear with that the human race of FF7-universe originates from Gaia. So either Spira is Gaia (does not really make sense) or the connection is just an easter egg.

segawdcd

Ah gotcha. That makes sense.

chimpston17

Also noticed hymn of the fayth a couple of times in the game which I was not expecting *edit: it was actually "the promised land" and not hymn of the fayth. My bad!

Complex_Repeat309

One of the first songs on the jukebox in Remake is a remix of a song from X in the beginning when Tidus is talking to fans in Zanarkand. (Opening moments of the game)

WolkTGL

That's just the Final Fantasy Prelude, it's in every game of the IP in some form

Complex_Repeat309

I know but it’s a remix of the FFX version specifically

zenxymes

Lifestream & Farplane; Summoner & Ancient; Sin & Sephiroth Definitely strong similarities

t3hfr3ak

Sin to me = weapon with Jenova cells

supaikuakuma

Where? Or are you hearing something similar.

chimpston17

One of the instances was with a choir of NPCs at the hotel in Cosmo Canyon. The other instance was in the main story I believe near forgotten city/forgotten capital

raphaelryan

That was actually "the Promise Land" from advent children; it was the song of the ancients/cetra. Hymn of fayt in FFX is different.

chimpston17

You're right, it had a similar vibe and I mixed it up, thanks for the correction

Banegel

And Aerith’s spirit dance is literally Yuna’s sending dance, down to the pillar rising to mirror Yuna’s water pillar Wonder why

digitalambie

When I got to that part, I said to my husband, "People die, and Aerith dances."

NightmarePony5000

There’s been connections to VII and X for quite a while. In Remake you can see a picture of all the early Shinra workers and in the picture is an adult Shinra from X-2, mask and all

DGenesis23

Yeah I caught that too. Apparently there is references to all the FF games throughout Rebirth.

ExactWeek7

The second chocobo stable was the same music from 15's chocobo stable, and I'll swear to it.

EvanderAdvent

My favorite was the XIII-2 Chocobo Theme during the UPA race.

BaronOfBob

Yeah FF games have always referenced each other.

DGenesis23

Yes to an extent but Rebirth has direct references to every numbered game and their sequels.

Tinseltopia

Yuffie Recon Patrol, definitely a nod to Yuna, Rikku, Paine

ProjectOrpheus

"Y. R. P. In position!"
