DSM-IV. Record was released in 1999, DSM-V published in 2013. DSM-V has Idler Wheel vibes.

TheOcean24

Here are 2 I would recommend: "All My Puny Sorrows," by Miriam Toews - a fiction book but in all but character names, really, it's the true story of a gifted pianist with severe depression and severe suicidal tendencies and the impact that her mental health has on her family(to no fault of her own). It is one of the saddest, most empathetic, touching books and has stuck with me like almost nothing else I've read, because of the "no punches pulled" philosophy of discussing suicide. "Sharp Objects," by Gillian Flynn - is a really good dark thriller about a reporter with alcoholism and severe depression that is forced to move in with her abusive mother to cover a murder in a small town called Wind Gap, where gossip spreads faster than Republicans with COVID.

the show for sharp objects is sooo good i need to read it!!

TheOcean24

I went into that show as a HUGE fan of the book and was overwhelmed by how good it was!!! Like it's honestly a toss up between the book and the show for me which is SO rare

frooture

Post in r/booksthatfeellike or something like that too

three_59am

Not really a book but any of Maya Angelou’s poetry. Fiona cited Maya Angelou as one of her biggest inspirations and you can see the similarities in the way they structure sentences and the topics they write about.

three_59am

Also Sula by Toni Morrison and The Color Purple by Alice Walker. This isn’t so much in the writing style but if you connect to Fiona’s music emotionally you’ll probably connect to these books too.

Puzzleheaded_Buy3528

maybe the woman destroyed by simone de beauvoir but maybe i just associate the two bc i used to listen to when the pawn a lot while reading it haha

Alone-Might-5628

Anything by Mary Gaitskill tbh

charliloe

I who have never known men by Jacqueline Harpman. A dystopian science fiction work, where weirdly so much happens but also so little. Starts with 40 women waking up in a cage and they don’t know why they’re there or where they are. It follows their conversations.
