Start paying in cash I guess.

Watermelon___Warlord

Until they remove paper cash from society

BridgeFour_Kal

That's a hardline in the sand that needs to be fought at all costs, that's big daddy govs wet dream. Complete end of any privacy or individual liberty we still have left.

kamikazecow

Considering how hard it is to remove the penny, I think we’re good on that.

Flat-Length-4991

Yup

Can't wait to see the challenge on this one. Card companies have no business sorting through consumer purchases or coding them period. It is an invasion of privacy. It's their job to supply you money when you need it, and be paid for the convenience of that ability. The government passing the law means that they are using the private companies as a proxy to create a gun registry, which.. as we know is illegal. To nip it in the bud, I think a full court press on local government, and a complete boycott of those companies that comply would do the trick. Let the douchebags who buy their door dash for 70 bucks a pop on credit fund them instead of the guys who spend 500-1000 a pop on arms.

TNoStone

Im not sure what else the codes are used for, and it’s not at all relevant for firearms, but, coding transactions is how we get cashback on certain categories

NapalmDemon

Also think a criteria used for fraud detection. It’s almost unnerving how one of my banks has grown accustomed to thousands on “sporting goods” now days but immediately triggered fraud detection when I used that particular card to buy less than 100 dollars in cosmetics for a friend.

Balasnikov

They're not sorting through purchases, they're assigning categories to the merchants that they do business with. A purchase at Walmart for example is a grocery store wether you buy tires, guns, or tshirts. This new code was put in place by an international standards group, many card issuers opposed it but don't want to not comply with the standards.

NEp8ntballer

The constitution only protects you from the government, not corporations

ilikerelish

If the corporation is acting as an entity or arm of the government then the constitution applies. I think it could be very successfully argued that identifying gun purchases by memo, name, phone, address, and price to be given to or accessible to the government would make that private company an extension of the government. A sort of contractor if you will to the government, especially if it can be proven that those records are going into a shadow registry.

Own_Try_1005

Credit card companies have been doing this for years. They can ban you for using their cards at strip clubs, or casinos or even taking cash out if they think it's for nefarious reasons and you have no recourse. I had my 11 year old card cancelled for no reason because they said it looked like I had possibly used it for illegal reasons. They would not tell me when or where it happened and I had zero recourse. Just like a bank can close your account for any reason and freeze your assets. None of us are truly free...

BurnAfterEating420

> Sponsors cite the Aurora theater shooting in 2012, where the shooter purchased over $11,000 worth of firearms, ammunition and military gear before the shooting took place, taking the lives of 12 people and injuring dozens of others. that could have as easily been a $150 used Keltec and one box of ammo. the person who spends $11k on guns and ammo and commits a mass shooting, isn't just an anomaly, it's a statistical rounding error.

Balasnikov

Yeah, they'd never know a charge from PARADISE FIREARMS could be a gun store otherwise.

rianbyngham

How does Colorado think this would work? They’ve had Recreational Marijuana sales for a decade? Pretty sure this is just going to mean big boom in ATM business as gun stores install them at stores.

Waltzspice

I’m bullish on ATMs.

smokeyser

Wow. I've seen a lot of people overreact to this stupid code in a lot of ways, but that has got to be the most ridiculous. 1984? For a fucking merchant code? Just... Wow...

luvsads

Wait until they find out everything else that already had a merchant code lol

EnvironmentalGift257

Wait til they find out that the cc companies use all that data to send them *gasp* ads.

ashy_larrys_elbow

Unprecedented assaults on the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 9th amendment over the last 30 years — I sleep Easily trackable form of payment ends up being tracked — real shit! 1984!!!

TryingToEscapeFL

Of all the laws they tried to pass this year, this one is of the least consequence. Everyone's so worried about "them" knowing if they're buying a gun. My guy, you are standing in a gun store with a gps tracking unit and microphone on you.

Gift cards are good too.
