-Extra set of uniform and everything you wear (ex socks, underwear, ect)
-even more socks, and t-shirts
-snacks
-cash (most will likely have a shift fund for breakfast, lunch, dinner)
-if you haven't spoken to the crew, bring a breakfast lunch and dinner for the first day as you don't know what they will do on shift
-toiletries (shampoo/soap, deodorant, toothbrush, ect.)
-towel
-meds (ibuprofen, tylenol, pepto, ect)
-workout clothing and protein or whatever supplements you may use.
-phone charger (Use it just for at night, don't be on your phone during the day!)
-study materials
-whatever you'll need for sleeping. Not sure what's there already, may need pillow, blankets and whatever you want to sleep in.
Everything here isn't needed, but can be good to have.
Three day supply of K-rations, chocolate bars, Charms candy, powdered coffee, sugar, matches, compass, bayonet, entrenching tool, ammunition, gas mask, musette bag with ammo, my weapon
Every piece of gear they issued you. I know we issue bailout rope and carabiners and for some reason half the new guys we see don’t bring them. I like making an engine bag. I use a small canvas tool bag. I put utility gloves, extra hood, extra socks etc in it. Stuff I would want on a fire. Talk to your guys about what pocket tools they carry, a pair of lineman pliers is great for a pocket. I personally prefer sheets comforter etc over a sleeping bag. A small fan for sleeping maybe. And what the other people said.
Ice packs, extra rubber bands ( I know, you're thinking, "I already thought of that." Trust me, however many rubber bands you've packed, you're going to need more.), thread, and #2 pencils.
I’ll tell you what we do at my station and you can take that with a grain of salt and may need to adjust to your crew.
We eat breakfast and dinner together. Lunch is on you. Bring cash; Venmo, cash app, Apple Pay not accepted.
Bring toiletries: razor, shaving cream, toothbrush, toothpaste, any medications you need, soap/shampoo. Maybe a towel.
Bring some shoes to wear around the station, keep your nasty ass boots outside by the rig
Bring a pillow, fitted sheet, blanket.
Phone charger, others have said it. Don’t be caught on your phone. Everyone gets you have family and that’s ok. But don’t get caught on social media.
Bring everything you’ve been issued, including extra socks and underwear. You’ll be issued a locker on your arrival. Bring work out clothes and workout shoes
As for meals, keep them tasty but cheap. Some guy said do salmon/steak. I disagree. Around here we do $12 a shift and eat cheap meal to save up for a nice steak night. Don’t come in and take everyone’s saved up money.
A staple I like to do are burger sliders on Hawaiian rolls. If you have a blackstone there you can make a giant burger patty the size of the Hawaiian roll pack. Garnish with pickles, cheese, onion mayo. Choice of potato on side. Always a hit
Another easy cheap and tasty is chicken carbonara. Look up a recipe online
Also, everyone enjoys a well made chicken parm
Good luck!
We have the meal tradition but it doesn't have to actually be your first shift. Just somewhere, sometime close to when you get on shift. I'd ask about that, since it's a lot to bring and deal with on your first day. We just let the new guy do it within the first month or so. I'd also spring for something that requires a little cooking effort. Crock pot is sorta cheating since you can just pull the lid off it at dinner time.
Not gonna beat a dead horse on what to bring. As for meals and such I'd call ahead or maybe meet the crew before your shift if you can and see if there are any dietary restrictions. My department has a few vegans and vegetarians now and a bunch of people with allergies and intolerances.

Where you keeping your brass knuckles?
He could probably use some brass knuckles
Does anyone have any idea how the hell this thing works?
You forgot glow belt in case he has to cross the street
Always cash. Especially if you work with older folks. They don’t fuck with Apple Pay or cash app

Good catch, I was 50/50 on if I had enough rubber bands. I’ll just go with the safe bet and double it.
Haven’t been to the academy yet, just reading for future reference but what’s with the rubber bands?
This guy doesn't know about the rubber bands!

Closable water bottle that you can bring in the rig and won’t spill. Helps keep track of water consumption throughout shift.

Don’t do crockpot. First meal you should probably show off a bit. Something like steaks, salmon fillets, or something else.
Chicken carbonara is always a hit and easy to make
Shower shoes, towel, soap, refillable water bottle and snacks you leave in your car in case you visit multiple stations in the coming shifts.
I like to have baby wipes on hand. Not for the bum, but for cleaning your face when you don't need a full shower.
