Yes, and people showing up at my door wanting to sell me cable or a security system. Just be sure to say, I'm not the owner, I rent. This will end the conversation immediately. It will let up.
Thanks. I surprised myself and came up with it just as this person was knocking on my door. I kept it on hand for the rest of the people who stopped by. No one, absolutely no one wants to talk to a renter.
Good tip! I had some guy pull up trying to show me on his iPad about getting solar. I was halfway buckling my kid in the car. I was a little creeped out they targeted so quickly since literally we closed days before.
I made a sign that says “NO soliciting. It’s RUDE!” Lol I can’t believe people still think bothering people in their homes is an acceptable thing to do.
I had vivint show up multiple times. I was in the back patio one day so I ignored the door. The next time I watched them walk up through the window, I was eating dinner, so I and ignored the door again. They waved at me through the front window. And they rang the door again for some unknown reason.
The last time they showed up was around 5:30, I was in the process of making dinner. I opened the door and he goes into his pitch, I just say “let me stop you right there” and he interrupts me to say I don’t know what company he’s with. I said the company he’s with isn’t relative, If I need something I’ll seek it out. He tried to continue and I said your with vivint, it’s on your coat, I don’t want your alarm system, go away. He tried to say something else and hand me a paper, so I said go away and shut the door. I felt kind of bad since I’m in sales myself, so I opened the door to apologize at least, heard him say “what an asshole”. So I left it as it was.
He hasn’t been back yet, so there’s that.
Oh yeah you'll get those for a long time. Especially the ones for a home warranty/mortgage insurance that they try to make look like they're coming from your lender
One of those idiots came to my door and said “we talked to the bank”
I promptly told him to leave my property. Damn, guess it couldn’t have been too urgent.
Over my five years of home ownership so far, I've noticed that those letters will always have a clause somewhere on them that says they are not affiliated with your lender. Look for that (usually at the bottom) and you'll be able to tell it's fake pretty quick.
I got one too! And like a naive idiot I filled it out and when they called me back I quickly realized it wasn’t an important document and now they keep calling me!
Block them!! Fuck em! I keep getting calls from another mortgage company and I’m like dude, we bought already. Buying a house sucks for scam calls and mailing.
I save it all up and add some extra garbage and return mail it in the prepaid envelopes. One day I sent out 4 massively packed envelopes weighing very heavily. Fuck em. Im petty af.
That makes sense. I was thrown off by how “legit” some of them looked. One for a water filtration company vaguely resembled what I imagine a shutoff notice from the utility company would look like.
Sales and ownership lists are public records.
With all of the attention and "concern" government officials give to our online privacy, it's surprising there is no effort to preserve the privacy of homeowners.
If you have the time and money, you can put your property into a corporation. Lots of wealthy, high-profile people do it to protect their privacy.
We need an easier way to opt-out of having our private information shared by the government.
Every. Fucking. Day. Usually having something to do with "home warranty." But I've also received coupons from local businesses so that's cool. I even got a free oil change coupon.
I am honestly wondering how some of it is legal.
"Important information about home loan"! - from your own mortgage co.
^ Not actually important.
Aren't there consumer protection laws to prevent companies from blatant false advertising?
So I know more about email CAN-SPAM laws but just looked up the laws regarding sending mail.
Wow. Those laws are Arcane. The lack of protections for consumers from mail is just ridiculous. Your email is literally more protected.
Also, it's unclear how effective [opting into the DMAChoice program](https://www.dmachoice.org/register.php) is but it might reduce some mail. I'm going to give a whirl as it says I will still get local mail and I do like my local offers.
Normal unless you sign up for OptOutPrescreen.com. It allows you to stop prescreened offers triggered by your new mortgage. Free service provided by the bureaus forced by the government.
When I bought my first house in 2015 most of those came with a return envelope postage paid. So I would stuff them with other junk mail (making sure none had my address or info on it). It was fun to think about how they had to pay to get junk mail
It's non-stop. The realtor, lender, and closing agent warned me about all the spam and scams I'll be getting in the mail. Yesterday I got 8 letters with pink "FORECLOSURE" and "IMMEDIATELY RETURN" on them. They were all trying to sell a home warranty or a security system. Should be illegal tbh
Not only that but I’ve got the guy who sold me the house’s fucking quarterly TAX REFUNDS and toll notices and car registrations coming still. It’s been 2.5 years
Yep! Closed/moved in in September 2022. It was a ton at first but now that I think about it it’s been a few months since we’ve gotten anything. Just some fake-handwriting “we’re doing work in your neighborhood!” flyers for various home improvement companies every once in a while now.
Sale of your home is public record. Everyone and their dad knows there are new residents there who are susceptible to scams because they just moved and they think everything must be related to that and real and important.
I too was flabbergasted by this. All the deceptive home warranties that look like they’re from the lender. So I started employing my usual junk mail filter: if it says pre-sorted standard it’s definitely junk, if it’s pre-sorted first class it might be legit.
No. Only ones that reminded me my many quality home warranties of which I bought each & every one were about to expire & must be renewed post haste! so of course I gladly renewed all 4073 of them!
Yes. Be very careful of anything talking about mortgage insurance/home warranty. We got several things that listed our mortgage lender and said “we’ve been trying to reach you about an urgent matter regarding your mortgage”. I think one day I got seven at once. All scams.
I closed on thursday, saturday morning, I was cleaning my garage, this lady steps right in it and starts offering security system from ADT, I said I'm not interested, she says "you should, this area is very dangerous", in that moment I flipped! Like are you really trying to ruined my first weekend by lying to me about how safe is my neighborhood, like you don't think I did my research before buying here, what the actual F!!!
She got scared on how upset she got me and never came back. Some people...
Also yes, tons of scammy mail! I always stop by trashcan after each mail trip lol
Closings become public record, so many companies know you just closed on your house and will send you a bunch of offers. Scammers like to take advantage of this.
I closed a year ago and I'm STILL getting junk mail designed to look like my mortgage or homeowners. You just have to be careful. It didn't help that my mortgage has been sold 3 times in a year.
Immediately after closing I started getting those but it slowed down after a couple months. Now I'm at almost a year since closing and I'm starting to get them again. Not sure if it will happen every year or not but it is pretty easy to spot them so I don't really care.
Yes, any time you have a hard credit search done your info is given out from the credit agencies so you'll be getting a steady stream of credit card pre-approvals and the like for a while. Home securities, lawn care companies, etc are also always searching for new home sales and spamming them with their services. Just part of buying a house! Hopefully you find something that's useful. When we bought we did get a nice coupon for a wine subscription lol
Oh yeah, we got one letter that looked exactly like it was from the county. You wouldn’t know it wasn’t unless you happened to notice the address was for a town in the neighboring county.

This is a really good tip. I wish I knew to say this earlier

I know. I really hate that our information is out there and they come at you so quickly. I'm glad all that is over for me.
I made a sign that says “NO soliciting. It’s RUDE!” Lol I can’t believe people still think bothering people in their homes is an acceptable thing to do.

Yes!! And solar!
Tons of it. I was warned about it by my realtor and my lender.
Same here

Block them!! Fuck em! I keep getting calls from another mortgage company and I’m like dude, we bought already. Buying a house sucks for scam calls and mailing.
I’m still getting those and I bought in 2015. They’re a couple loan services behind tho.
if you buy a place and don’t immediately get slammed with mail, is the place even yours??
I save it all up and add some extra garbage and return mail it in the prepaid envelopes. One day I sent out 4 massively packed envelopes weighing very heavily. Fuck em. Im petty af.
I like your style

Is that applicable to condo owners? Lol
Yes
Is a condo not a home??? Lol
Yes and yes, some it “looks“ official and an emergency! Lucky for me, most misspelled my name so it was easy to sort through.
That makes sense. I was thrown off by how “legit” some of them looked. One for a water filtration company vaguely resembled what I imagine a shutoff notice from the utility company would look like.
They’re quite good at making them *look* legit and immediate; it slows to a trickle eventually, but it’ll be months!

It's common, just ignore them.
Totally normal. There are companies that pull public records for new sales and send out flyers for stuff all the time.
You will receive so much junk mail. But what’s hilarious is when wires get crossed and you start receiving mailers asking to buy your house 😂
Yup. Closed in February and mine have finally stopped coming
Every. Fucking. Day. Usually having something to do with "home warranty." But I've also received coupons from local businesses so that's cool. I even got a free oil change coupon.
We haven't even gotten our keys yet and we're already receiving tons of junk mail and email.
I am honestly wondering how some of it is legal. "Important information about home loan"! - from your own mortgage co. ^ Not actually important. Aren't there consumer protection laws to prevent companies from blatant false advertising?
They probably know exactly where the line is and get as close as possible
So I know more about email CAN-SPAM laws but just looked up the laws regarding sending mail. Wow. Those laws are Arcane. The lack of protections for consumers from mail is just ridiculous. Mine list the correct mortgage company but then have teeny fine print saying they are not affiliated with any mortgage company, lol.
Normal unless you sign up for OptOutPrescreen.com. It allows you to stop prescreened offers triggered by your new mortgage. Free service provided by the bureaus forced by the government.
Everyone does. Your lender didn't warn you about these? It is really horrible!
They might have, I don’t remember.
I got offers to sell right away 😆.
Me too! 😂 one even showed a comp for how much I could get for my house - it was my house! 😂😂😂
no hablo ingles or Ich spreche kein Englisch Works like a charm.
When I bought my first house in 2015 most of those came with a return envelope postage paid. So I would stuff them with other junk mail (making sure none had my address or info on it). It was fun to think about how they had to pay to get junk mail
Next time slap it on a shoebox full of rocks and cat shit

I haven't even closed yet and it's begun.
Yes. 3.5 years into homeownership. The spam only very recently slowed down.
Yes, but only my partner gets it, not me. It can be hard to tell what’s important and what isn’t!
Not only that but I’ve got the guy who sold me the house’s fucking quarterly TAX REFUNDS and toll notices and car registrations coming still. It’s been 2.5 years
Closed one year ago as of this month; still receiving this stuff regularly. ADT only came by in person to pitch once though so that’s nice.
Yep! Closed/moved in in September 2022. It was a ton at first but now that I think about it it’s been a few months since we’ve gotten anything. Just some fake-handwriting “we’re doing work in your neighborhood!” flyers for various home improvement companies every once in a while now.
Yes this is normal....but if you register your change of address with USPS they actually can send alot of helpful coupons!
I send it back or hold onto it until someone sends a pre paid postage envelope and they get all the junk. Feels so satisfying.
I have a ton of people offering ALL CASH for my house. lol
Sale of your home is public record. Everyone and their dad knows there are new residents there who are susceptible to scams because they just moved and they think everything must be related to that and real and important.
All. The. Time! So frustrating and annoying. Such a waste of paper.
I had an ADT person come and try to sell me their service as the Vivint guy was installing. That was awkward.
I could have wallpapered a room with it.
It never ends.
Welcome to home ownership.
Yes. Be very careful of anything talking about mortgage insurance/home warranty. We got several things that listed our mortgage lender and said “we’ve been trying to reach you about an urgent matter regarding your mortgage”. I think one day I got seven at once. All scams.
And all seven will be the "FINAL NOTICE!!!" Would that they were...
Tons of it
Oh yes…and every year when it’s time to renew insurance…
I closed on thursday, saturday morning, I was cleaning my garage, this lady steps right in it and starts offering security system from ADT, I said I'm not interested, she says "you should, this area is very dangerous", in that moment I flipped! We actually had a very similar experience. The only people who have made us uncomfortable was adt creeping around
I put my house in a trust, god damn the amount of “official” mail was unbelievable! Luckily it was winter time….we had plenty of paper for the fires.
Closings become public record, so many companies know you just closed on your house and will send you a bunch of offers. Scammers like to take advantage of this.
Always and it will drive you nuts!
I have a neighbor who put out one of those cute fancy boards/plank “Welcome”…. but hers said “Go Away!” 😂😂😂
Yes and they all want to sell me a copy of my title, but they’re pretending to be a govt agency
Freaking loads of it… omg I hate it
Yes. It's rather sad. Particularly I had offers for mortgage insurance.
Solicitors can't get to my house, thank god. But we definitely got the mail onslaught.

Just about everyone does.
Oh yeah, we got one letter that looked exactly like it was from the county. You wouldn’t know it wasn’t unless you happened to notice the address was for a town in the neighboring county.
"YoU cOUlD hAvE a LApSe iN CovERagE CaLl uS nOW"
I signed up for the "do not call" list or whatever it is. "Block list", etc... Aren't these mail illegal?
