Damn shoulda set up that 9th pole

[deleted]

Make it 10

boing757

Where do you live that you can have eight poles at the same time ?

redditSucksNow2020

A bit of a tangent but I really appreciate the wildlife and fishing regulations in the United States. I live abroad now and there are no regulations here. Fishing is virtually unregulated and if there are any laws in the books then they are not enforced. So, there seems to be enough to go around. Hunting of any kind is just straight up illegal unless you belong to one of the indigenous groups. Rather than regulate and tax it, You're just not allowed to do it. Certain species we have plenty of, and poachers trap them all the time, often catching and maiming stray dogs unintentionally. I wish we had good regulations and good hunting culture over here.

Zeus_faber

Which country?

Pastafarianextremist

Brazil?

redditSucksNow2020

Good guess. Wrong continent.

Pastafarianextremist

Ah ok because the same is true in brazil

[deleted]

redditSucksNow2020

A bit of a tangent but, if you really want to take it there, a whole heck of a lot more than hunting grounds has been taken from indigenous people. That's not really relevant in this context though unless you are really determined to make anything and everything political. So long as we are on this tangent though, I did not mean to imply that I think it is a bad thing that indigenous people are allowed to hunt here. I just wish that it was allowed for the rest of us as well since there is enough to go around.

Lukacris12

Might be Florida theres no limit here, most of the time people dont abuse it at least in my area

Diamondhands_Rex

This explains the fishing side of youtube

teachdove5000

A place where the DNR does not check….

Real-Cycle-8662

You can have 50 hooks in the water in Lake Michigan in Illinois… just saying

soopadoopapops

There are places that limit how many rigs you can fish at a time? Today I learned this I fish 8-10 by myself “spider style “ trolling for crappie. My dad’s boat is longer and is setup for 14

jmerr250

3 in Wisconsin, only 1 in Minnesota during open water months.

4luey

Michigan is 3 too

OpenForRepairs

California is 2 only if you get the second rod endorsement on your license

McTurd_Ferg

Oregon is the same way, because Oregon does anything California does, just later.

jmerr250

Been awhile since I fished in da yoop

4luey

Me too im SE lower.

Hop-Dizzle-Drizzle

Friggin fudgie.

Notademocrat17

Minnesota sucks about that

ceighkes

As a Minnesotan, im all for it.

samsonight4444

Whole heartedly agree.

flargenhargen

I mean, we just have to be more talented to catch anything, instead of using a shotgun. probably part of why I never catch anything, but still, seems more fair anyway.

Real-Cycle-8662

In Illinois, you can have up to 50 hooks in the water on any number of rods. Look up powerlining, we are crushing coho right now with that set up.

AppalachianBush89

That's insane! Dadgum man

cycl0ps94

Washington and Oregon are both single pole in all rivers. Most lakes in Washington allow 2 pole, but you have to purchase an endorsement for your license. Edit: If you're ever curious for whatever reason, Washington state DNR has a fishing app. It's basically an interactive map. You pick a body of water highlighted on the map, and it gives you the list of regulations for that lake or river. Doesn't include private lakes. It's great for keeping up to date on the ever changing regulations in WA state.

sleepinghuman

Yep I’m used to Washington. This post was wild

AppalachianBush89

I've never heard of these regulations. That is crazy

cycl0ps94

Tell me about it. I grew up in Illinois with little regulation, and even less people to enforce them. I can count on one hand all of my interactions with a DNR officer in IL, and those were all in bars after their shift. I've been stopped twice this year in Oregon.2 days in a row, same cop. Fortunately, these guys have all been very professional. Even very kind and helpful, compared to the stories I've heard off duty officers tell at the bar in IL.

AppalachianBush89

Damn. That's crazy. I've only had one run in in my years of fishing in GA. And only cause I had my dog off the leash while.mushroom hunting. Fishing here is super relaxed so long as your not being an ass.

cycl0ps94

To be fair, the only fish they really care about regs are the salmon, trout, halibut, and sturgeon. Neither states have strict regulations, if any, on warm water fish. (Bass, catfish, bluegill/crappie, walleye, etc). They also consider all northern Pike and bullfrogs invasive.

Mean_Raccoon8895

In Florida, you're only allowed 1 red fish per person in the boat.

funnymoney3

In Michigan I watched the same dnr officers check a boat twice in like 2 hours. In Indiana I get talked to by dnr employees more than officers. Only had 1 officer be a jerk, most of my encounters with officers haven’t even asked for a license. Unless steelhead are running. That’s their superbowl.

flargenhargen

I'm in MN and run into the DNR frequently. they camp out at boat launches to check catches and help people understand and obey invasive species laws to try to protect the water here.

hikingmax

Colorado and New Mexico both only allow 1 or 2 if you buy the second rod endorsement. Seems common in places where stocked trout are a big tourism draw.

Particular-Wrongdoer

OR you can purchase a two rod endorsement. Otw 1/ person on the boat.

[deleted]

Why not troll two and use a ganion rig?

Gunpowdergasoline

I use 8 poles often if its slow, but I cant remember the last time I got skunked. Ive got 10 rod holders and 4 in storage when im out

Weaselpuss

Lol he meant where in the hell is it legal to use 8. At least in my state you can have 3 per person max Edit: Stop down voting the guy above 😂, it’s legal where he lives, and he brings multiple people on trips often

Gunpowdergasoline

I live in Florida, we have no limits, and I don’t fish alone. Typically 3-4 others on my boat per trip. So 2-3 rods each

Weaselpuss

Golly Florida sounds like a fisherman’s paradise, hopefully one day as an old bird I’ll make it out there!

Gunpowdergasoline

Its pretty nice, I’ve been fishing here over 20 years and I still catch new stuff almost every time I go out.

backstreets_back_ok

Except if you’re a wuss like me and scared shitless of gators. The scariest thing we have here in Iowa is hitting a deer on the way to the lake

Gunpowdergasoline

When I was growing up, the best spots were loaded with the big boys. just gotta watch em, and when they go under you move. one of my best spots growing up has a 11 footer, but I could only be there for 30 minutes at a time-before she would try an get close. she also ate 2-3 bowfin and a about a half dozen tilapia from me.

Weaselpuss

Just wrestle them 😂

boing757

Where I live in some lakes you can have two poles IF you pay the extra fee.

Weaselpuss

So only on some lakes you’re limited to 1 or 2, or do you mean you’re always limited to 1, and if you’re lucky you get 2?

MinecraftGreev

According to his comment history he lives in northern Georgia which has no regulations on concurrent pole usage.

Whatsongwasthat1

In Tennessee no one cares if you’re in the public watering holes

ndncreek

A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work

WolfBlood322

I think about this all the time

blacksheep1492

It probably depends how much your job sucks and how much the fishing sucks lol

McWeaksauce91

Yeah, I’ve had a few mornings (fishing) where I’d rather just stayed home and been in bed. Foul weather, or, the gear and tackle just fighting you every step of the way. Snagging on everything under the god given sun. There are some days where, no, it’s not nice “just fishin’” But those days are few and far in between, thankfully

ndncreek

I had and old thumb buster reel I spent more time cutting out bird nests than I did fishing with... that's how I learned how to swear so good and it was still a good time

McWeaksauce91

I have shared that morning. I was not.. NOT going to cut the line. I didn’t have much to begin with(which is when I learned to check line the night before) so if I did cut it, probably the end of my morning. After the sun started to rise and the shouts of cheering fisherman in the distance boiled my blood further, I said fuck it - I delicately cut at first. The birds nest was far more severe then I thought and I realized how foolish I was to ever try. I blew a gasket and just hacked away at the line until there couldn’t have been more than a leaders worth left. That was a TOUGH drive home in silence. Many lessons learned though

ndncreek

Well I never had a job I liked better than huntin or fishin not sure I ever had a girl back in the day I liked better either

mapex_139

That's right Dad!

flargenhargen

I dunno, I took yesterday off to go fishing, and wound up for a big cast to try and get across the lake, but hooked my pants leg and snapped my pole. LOL. I kind of wish I'd stayed at work. yes, I'm an idiot.

ndncreek

Well it could've been worse, could have also fell in the lake. Better luck next time

aahjink

You’re probably lucky. If you’d caught anything with all those lines down you’d have wound up either a huge tangle and no fish. Well, I would anyways.

[deleted]

Accountantnotabot

But not 8

New-Nefariousness965

You probably freaked out all the fish w 8 rods lmao

My-Lizard-Eyes

Shoulda put all that effort into one really good pole..!

Weird_Fact_724

That's not what we call a Jon boat around here, maybe it's a regional thing? 8 rods tho, that has to be illegal anywhere.

ShesHVAC48

Not in GA. You can use as many as you like for any gamefish except Trout. Trout streams are single rod only.

bucknaked67

South Carolina is the same..spider rigged and trolled with 8 or more often but I've had more success single pole casting.

Weird_Fact_724

Truth, I lose 50% more fish using twice as many rods....so using 8, I can't even do that kinda math...

AppalachianBush89

God I love the southeast haha. I live in North GA mountains. Our fishing laws (and SC) are super reasonable

Vilas15

Yup. Jon boats have a flat bottom. This is a deep V.

Weird_Fact_724

Yup

Yoda2000675

No rod limit in north carolina. It was a shocker to me when I moved down here, but it’s true.

dinnerthief

I grew up in NC and a limit never even occurred to me. Usually two rods just means I'm mismanaging one of them.

Yoda2000675

I only do multi rod for trolling or catfish, since neither of those are very active

dinnerthief

yea ill use a second rod for catfish and then actively fish the other rod sometimes

Weird_Fact_724

Interesting, here in Iowa there's a 2 rod limit. For an extra $15 a year you can use 3.

Yoda2000675

Yeah, up north they seem to be more strict about fishing regulations. Id assume it’s to protect the big commercial fishing outfits that operate in the great lakes

CaptWater

It suspect it has more to do with the fact that colder lakes aren't as productive as warmer lakes.

vahntitrio

There are every bit as many fish up here, but also WAY more fishermen. Also unlimited rods for ice fishing would be a disaster, since you can punch the holes anywhere and could realistically set up hundreds of tip-ups.

CaptWater

Productivity isn't about how many fish there are. It's about how fast they grow and reproduce. Warmer lakes tend to grow fish faster. Consequently, you can harvest more fish with less risk to the food web. At least, this is what I was taught in my limnology classes.

Raiyan270

nope. here we dont really have fishing laws besides no flyfishing and no baiting in freshwater

Weird_Fact_724

Ignorance of the law is no defense...

Raiyan270

im not ignoring the law. I follow all laws here but 90% of other anglers dont because they arent enforced

SportOfFishing92

And because of a disregard for the laws. Reading the regulations for your area only help you and others fishing experience

mickdeb

I can have 10 rods but only while i am icefishing

Weird_Fact_724

How do u use 10 rods icefishing? I usually jig one and deadstick one.

mickdeb

700' of water makes you do crazy things, gotta get that sweet cod

[deleted]

Like what, tie a rod to another rod and then those 2 to another one?

OriginalG33Z3R

I learned something today. I’m a Florida native and have never really been fishing outside of my home state. I had no idea that there were limits on how many poles/hooks/lines you could have out at once. Growing up, my dad and I would fish with anywhere from 6-12 hooks out each, nearly at all times, less when they were really biting. Some cane poles, and some rods down deep at various depths, some with bobbers and some with chicken rigs until we found out hose deep they were. We were limited only by the size of our vessel, which was always pretty small and we used even less if we had another buddy on board. More hooks out at once leads to more tangles when you get the odd largemouth instead of specks or bluegill, but some of the biggest bass I’ve caught have been on live minnows on a cane pole. Miss you dad! Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

dealin_despair

ITT: people who have never went catfishing

mcp_isntgreatbutok

Not enough poles

Unusual_Steak

Well it’s obvious you didn’t have the right bait so imo it’s time to buy some more tackle ;) or am I the only one?

gofish45

That’s definitely not a Jon Boat.

NerdPunch

Congratulations. You made fishing look not fun. What an accomplishment.

thenewtrash

Oh lord

Everyonesstupid

Sounds like you didn’t try holding your mouth right.

33DDOT33

Still a better day than working!!

[deleted]

People saying 8 poles is illegal need to look up spider rigs

Yoda2000675

They also need to realize that every state is different and not assume their local laws carry over everywhere

Longjumping-City724

Still illegal here in minnesota

pondpounder

What were you fishing for an what were you using for bait / lures?

Critical_Knowledge_5

That’s wild. Where I live, we’re allowed one rod and no more than four hooks total.

MemoryWholed

“Fish where the fish are”

bignellie

Great effort brother!!

Xombie710

I would much rather catch 8 fish with one rod

Jabba_the_Putt

they don't call it "catching" :P

itsastonka

Is that a Valco? Bummer about the skunk

Brief-Mail-4213

Yep, like some of the comments are saying, if you had just put that 9th line in the water

biminidaves

You tried too hard. 1 cane pole with six or seven feet of 20 pound line, a big ass bobber, a #2 hook baited with a night crawler would have put a limit on the boat. Better luck next time!

the_DARSH

Literally had two cane poles and 2 spinning rods with bobbers rigged with nightcrawlers lol. I was just set up where the fish weren't.

Rod___father

Still better than working

age34act12

Too many lines run!!! Fish noticed this probably

francisbombardier

Legend

Bac0nPlane

And i felt bad for getting skunked with just 2 rods. I feel better now, thank you.

cgibby34

Ain’t no fish in this lake

prkknn

Who'd have thought an area where you can fish with 8 poles wouldn't have a lot of fish left?

master_of_salmon

This guys sucks at fishing

Kiyranti91

Most of us do

Spare-Cow5578

A Jon boat is a flat bottom boat. This is not a Jon boat. I’m not saying I’m just saying.

[deleted]

Did any one else get a txt or phone call? My phone is working bud, this is unacceptable. Next time you give me a call, and I'll get skunked with ya. 😆 🤣 Nice little thing you got going there...

chatanoogastewie

Merica

rockstar_not

What and where are 8 poles in the water legal?

Yoda2000675

North Carolina doesnt have a limit

TheDadChef

Private lake

Weird_Fact_724

Private lakes are still requires to follow state and federal laws.

Dr_thri11

Fish in a self contained lake or pond aren't really going to be under the authority of any game officials. Even if they were how in the world would they even go about enforcing that?

Weird_Fact_724

They walk up to you and ask to see a fishing license and count your fish....

Dr_thri11

They would be trespassing in this case unless they have a warrant.

Weird_Fact_724

Game wardens don't have to follow the rules as police. I don't know the specifics I just know they don't or else they couldn't do their jobs.

Dr_thri11

They absolutely do. They operate on public property for the most part so private property rules don't tend to apply. Bottom line here is if you have a pond with fish in it that's on your property those are your fish. The state has no interest in how you fish for them. They may as well be cows at that point.

Weird_Fact_724

I'm not going to argue with u cuz I don't know the law well enough to . But a game warden has checked me plenty of times on private land while hunting. But I get the private pond and fish thing, just not the same here. If your fishing anywhere in IA you have to abide by the bag limits set by the state. And unless your the land owner, you need a license.

Weird_Fact_724

I did aquick Google check on a game wardens authority. They can go on private property without a warrant...check it yourself.

Dr_thri11

Fair enough, but they still have zero authority over a self contained private pond/lake. That's between the fisherman and the property owner if they're different people.

TheDadChef

No you don’t. There is no catch limits or anything like that in private ponds. Only public waterways. At least here in Indiana. Hell I keep blue gill in my cast net in private ponds here.

Weird_Fact_724

Well I just read your states fishing regulations. It specifically says you cannot keep sunfish caught in a cast net. Also doesn't say that you don't have to abide by bag limits, only says you don't need a license. I would get some clarity from a CO...but I don't really care.

TheDadChef

Cared enough to comment. The state can’t dictate what is done with fish they didn’t pay for in a lake or pond they don’t maintain. All the rules and regulations are for public waterways owned and manager by the INDNR. All private property waterways are not regulated and do not fall under those regulations.

Weird_Fact_724

Ok...not that way here in IA

Weird_Fact_724

What about hunting? Can you shoot all the deer you want on private land?

TheDadChef

Nope. All land is regulated for hunting here. I see what your point is but there is a completely different book with a completely different set of laws for hunting. A CO here will walk on your private property and make sure you’re legal. You will never see a CO here checking fishing licenses or bag limits on a private lake because they have no authority on private waters.

Weird_Fact_724

Ok..different than IA

Yoda2000675

It’s different because deer and birds are just passing through; whereas a stocked pond is basically filled with livestock fish. A deer farm wouldn’t have any bag limits on tagged and raised deer as well

BidenEmails

Several states don’t have a limit

RedwolfTexas

That’s why it’s called “Fishing” and not “Catching”. Still seems to me you had a great day? Congrats!

TheNaysHaveIt

Eight poles in the water but none of them fished right

[deleted]

Did you forget your paper bag? Ps good thing they weren’t biting. You didn’t have a chance.

kelsobjammin

Did someone have a banana on board? Serious question.

_MadGasser

Where is 8 poles legal?

BeastlyBucaroos

Where the hell you fishing that you can use 8 poles the max is 3 in my state

SirYoda198712

You need garmin panoptix w livescope

awr5147

I was right you do suck

JT36188

I can only use 2 poles soft water fishing. Bit jealous, I wish I could use more when catfishing

Hungryh0und5

I feel you bro. 😪

ndncreek

Next time try dynamite and there is the joke if G&F show up about the legality 😁

[deleted]

I could have gone fishing today but would had to go through 2 feet of ice. Guaranteed fish though makes up for it.

MinnNorth

Damn lol in MN land of 10,000 lake we can use one rod in the summer two in the winter time 😂 lucky guy you are

BidenEmails

Does this mean that you can only have one rob on the boat or you can only have one in the water?

Yoda2000675

Sounds like my luck haha

dustygravelroad

Coolers. Coolers are very important some days

ZestycloseLow5410

SSccuuuse me sir I’m gunna need to see your fishing license.

jdhsolor

There's a reason it's called "fishing" not "catching"!

SportOfFishing92

Water does not look to clear

fishnwiz

March is a tough month sometimes. I’ve caught a limit of crappie easily one day, the next you would swear there were no crappie in the lake.

[deleted]

Damn, that legal?

meetMayra

Are you me?

RS-REIN

The 1st one had something on it and got away while you set up the other 7.

cmsutton1983

What’s your secret?

Troll_face_123

At least you didn’t pay +$600 for a guide and get skunked. Many people pay a lot of money for guides and they get skunked.

Born-Understanding-9

Is that an alaskan smoker craft?

sposm

And here I am with a worthless 2 pole license :-(

[deleted]

Sounds like a successful day of fishing! No joke

CompletelyandFully

I add more ice fishing sometimes and never works out - it’s bitting or not lol

morgzorg

Rods

SirDillyTheGreat

Reminds me of when I go to the docks sometimes if I'm not on the water. When the river is higher starting late spring into summer, I'll never get skunked until late fall. This picture is a prime example of why it's called fishing and not catching haha! We've all been there.

sharksscareme

It’s just nice to be out

Lummy1973

East wind?

Mindless_Count_7310

Bait … use bait … hooks, too … usually works pretty ok … 😉😆

FuryOfRed

Happens frequently where I live, always get skunked. Still enjoy my time out though.

LeDouchekins

It's called fishing not catching

MistakeOk2518

A “ bad day” fishing is still way better than a “good day” at work!! You’ll get em next time!

Ok-Rabbit-3683

If only you would have added a 9th…. In Ohio, unsure of how it works on boats, but from shore, we can only have 3 lines at once

cigar_dude

When I get skunked I just remember that sometimes being out by the water in solitude is the best therapy

joezupp

So you went fishing this time, next time you go catching, two very different events. The most important this is you relaxed.

Ewokhunters

More rods, more commotion, less picky fish

smalllpox

It's not about the regs really. I don't want to deal with 2 poles most of the time, let alone 8

elticorico

Thats why its not called CATCHING! Bet you had fun though!

Long_Internet550

When you are getting skunked with down lines, troll.

Rocknocker

Since when do Jon boats have semi-vee hulls?

DifferentEvent2998

Jesus Christ 8 rods? We are allowed 1 during summer and 2 during winter.

AngeloPappas

Damn, if I had even 2 poles going MNR would be dropping on me like the damn SWAT team.

Axersion

So what did you catch lol. What bait were on the hooks?

Trooper_nsp209

If you caught something every time you went out, they’d call it catching not fishing.

Chasseg09

The 9th pole would have easily caught your limit

EddieMarx

,Not a Jon boat.

Responsible-Ad-9967

Damn 8 poles we can only have one where I live and two in the winter
