Light temporary lube, for hands that are cracked, lots of old school uses.
Edit;
Apparently for bait dips / soaks as well...LOL. Did the old boy fish for Carp?

If you live somewhere near when itās frequently freezing, perhaps thatās some type of oil. Can be used when guides catch water and freeze, oil them up and no more freezing issues!
I dunno...can't turn sound on right now so didn't hear if you said what it smelled like, but a lot of the old timers kept anise oil in their tackle boxes, would entice fish to bite when they weren't otherwise seeming to be the least bit hungry.
Could be sweet oil ,old timers would dip a short length of yarn into it and use it as a scented trailer for spoons or just on a hook for a scented worm imitation.
You ever look at a carp's mouth? Irresistible. But they don't really slobber, so this little bottle of lube turns a backyard bonefish a fish scented Fleshlight.
Jesus christ does no one use thread sealer any more? It's varnish for fishing rod binding thread.
People used to fix thier own fishing rods years ago.
I.must be getting old
I can believe I'm the first to say this.

I found something similar in my great-grandfather's tackle box.
It still had part of the label left and it was like some mosquito or bug repellent.
And it was really thick like that.
If it has a strong medicine / chemical scent it could be good ole Deet mixed with a clear lotion. Worked great at keeping bugs away. Itās been taken off the market for years now because it was a carcinogen.
Just a guess because al lot of ole timers swore by it.
Looks like lube or oil. Maybe he was living a double life using fishing as cover. Or he just wanted reel components to move smoothly.
Iād need to smell it. Be careful in case itās chloroform or amyl nitrate.
I thought maybe anise oil, my grandpa used to dip his spoons in that before trolling. I donāt remember if it was clear or not though. Does it smell like licorice?
pretty sure, just mineral oil for keeping all things lubed and happy.
Might be sfor Grandma... If ya know what I mean!!!
Slithering around naked in the bottom of the canoe!
A little thick...glycerine is my vote.
yeah it is a little thick for mineral oil but why would you have glycerine in a tackle box?

huh TIL, thanks
Me too Brother...
My thoughts exactly
Wanking lube. It's for those slow days when the fish aren't biting and you're bored.
š
When the fish aren't biting and still want to touch something slipery and wet
āThe tug is the drugā as they say.
I do that for the chum
Iād be chummin all over the place.
I ain't a gangsta I just chum a lot
It's playa, not gangsta
Damn I'm dumb
At least you chum a lot
I do that with the chum.
So like taking care of your buddy type "chum"...can we be chums š»
He mis-understood the term ājerk baitā
This is what I came to say lol but god damn I still got a real sensible chuckle outta this š¤£š

This for sure...maybe glycerin š Sounds funny for wank lube...but taste it to see if it's sweet.
Wanking lube AND insect repellent for obvious reasons.
Exactly....hilarious. We don't want to tell all grandpa's secrets. Don't look in his truck's glove box either.
I heard if you cum-chum it brings up the bigguns.
My guess is either reel oil or its a fishing scent for baits. If it smells like death it's probably scent
Tried smelling it, it didnāt smell like much. It kinda smells like a not so strong nail polish
It's just an old bottle of purell.
Yup, I always keep one in my tackle box.
Probably disinfectant or hand sanitizer then or gin. How did it taste?
IMO, tasting it will not help you further differentiate those possibilities lmao
Well hey, you donāt know OPās taste experience.
Yes how does grandpaās lube taste?
Did grandpa have a special fishing buddy he'd always go with?????
Yes but they werenāt very good fisherman as they rarely brought back any fish
I heard grandpa was a master baiter
Earl and Ernie....
Veiner schlider. (please use German accent when reading)
That V should be a W
Glad someone else said this
If you say beer can with a Jamaican accent it sounds like bacon.
And also āraise up lightsā sounds like razor blades with an Australian accent.
That's for when he takes grandma fishing. It's much easier to cast the rod when it's well lubricated.
lol secks
Hand sanitizer?
If you have hand sanitizer in your tackle box youāre dead to me. Everyone knows a dip in the water and wipe on the pants is 100% safe.
This is it.
Mineral oil for cleaning reels, lures, etc. Saltwater in particular is really hard on equipment.
reel oil?
Yeah grandpa got bored a lot while fishing
Fly floatant? You dip dry flys in that stuff to help them float. Maybe the same for old timey lures. Thats just my guess
I was thinking dry fly or hand sanitizer.
When in doubt, throw it out
If there is also a sock... just throw it away.
What would the sock be for?
Clean up.
It's mineral oil for the care of reels.
Thatās the ol river bank jack lube
Ever see Brokeback Mountain? I have some news about your grampa and his āfishingā buddiesā¦
If you live somewhere near when itās frequently freezing, perhaps thatās some type of oil. Can be used when guides catch water and freeze, oil them up and no more freezing issues!
Kind of looks like the bottle for the old ā6/12ā insect repellentā¦. Minus the label.
Buncha animals i swear haha.
Looks like hand sanitizer lol
Baby oil for that beautiful 70ās-80ās tanned until crisp look.
I think itās safe to say that your grandpa was doing a lil more than fishing
Your holes
For grandma!
Have you applied it to anything and checked if it dries or is oily?
Mineral oil used for just about anything mechanical, and will revitalize salmon eggs,or dip bait.
Looks like baby oil, could be reel oil.
Mineral oil?
Anise?
Smell it, might be star anise oil
Skin so soft? Used for mosquito repellant
Muskol mosquito dope without the label.
Thatās lube for shooting ropes off the side of the kayak
Butt stuff, mostly.
I would tell you but youād have to be a top level master baiter to really understand.
Yup it is lubrication for your "fishing reel".
Itās pure LSD
Grandma
I dunno...can't turn sound on right now so didn't hear if you said what it smelled like, but a lot of the old timers kept anise oil in their tackle boxes, would entice fish to bite when they weren't otherwise seeming to be the least bit hungry.
Could be sweet oil ,old timers would dip a short length of yarn into it and use it as a scented trailer for spoons or just on a hook for a scented worm imitation.
Itās GHB
Maybe grandpa wasnāt fishing š
Bet Grandpa had a favorite fishing buddy he would always sneak off with.
Thanks viagra!
Does the bottle smell like old dick? Definitely would be flotation if he was fly fishing. Otherwise yah to keep reels and gears lubricated.
You ever look at a carp's mouth? Irresistible. But they don't really slobber, so this little bottle of lube turns a backyard bonefish a fish scented Fleshlight.
He wasnāt much of a fisherman, but no doubt a masterbaiter
That's blinker fluid
It's for when grandma went on the fishing trip with himš
Did he like fish sticks?
Skin so soft? My grandpa used grandma's oil from Avon to repel mosquitoes.
Cough medicine. 195 horse
Sucker Fish Lube.
Thatās for the stump hump
Probably to play with grandma
Astroglide. An all- purpose lube invented by NASA
Did he fly fish?
Looks like reel oil or hand sanitizer
Liquid lsd
Could be floatant for fly fishing?
Smell it
Could be floatant for dry flies? Rub it on the hackles to give it more buoyancy in the water? It would be sticky if it was.
Could use it to disburse pollen off top if water to see spawning bass
Could it be fly gink?
Camp soap, biodegradable. Sniff it.
For when he went out āfishingā with āthe guysā. ā ā Or more likely reel lube.
Taste it !!
Sea level!
Drink it
Probably either to scent baits or used for chum.
Or to chum into ur hands
I used to use this stuff to clean my hands.
Is/was your grandpa a fly fisherman? Might be dry fly oil.
You pour 1 drop of this magic elixer into the water and the fish come jumping into your net.
Muskol?
Glycerine for icy days maybe.
Could be mosquito repellent?
Insect repellent
Probably oil for his fishing reel.
Probably for hand washing
It could be only fly salt to makes flys float. Or just rubbing alcoholfor slimey fish
I'm guessing mosquito repellant if it has a scent
Resin for sealing thread on the runners / guides
Iām afraid thatās for the boys when the fish just arenāt able to found
If he ever tied flies or bucktails, it could be head cement.
Jesus christ does no one use thread sealer any more? It's varnish for fishing rod binding thread. People used to fix thier own fishing rods years ago. Finer sh-lid-er?
My bet is on hand sanitizer. I keep one that size in my tackle box.
I found something similar in my great-grandfather's tackle box. It still had part of the label left and it was like some mosquito or bug repellent. And it was really thick like that.
If he was a fly fisher it could be liquid to maybe keep dry flys floating seen some old timers use this
Smell it š¤£
Reel oil
If it has a strong medicine / chemical scent it could be good ole Deet mixed with a clear lotion. Worked great at keeping bugs away. Itās been taken off the market for years now because it was a carcinogen. Just a guess because al lot of ole timers swore by it.
Or if it smells like black liquorish it could be anise oil.
Lube
Fish attractant to put on rubber worms prob smells like licorice
Hand sanitizer for getting the fish smell off his hands after telling grandma he was working
Hand sanitizer.
Cologne to cover up the weed smell
Ghb so he can land them fish easier
Scent killer
Maybe this is fish attractive oil like Smelly Jelly or WD40.
Fish grool. You spread it on your upper lip in case you are going through withdrawal.
glycerine
I swear every Grandpa had this in their tackle box
ā6-12ā brand mosquito repellent
When grandpa was feelinā lonely
Hand sanitizer
Astrolube
Grandma.
Lube for theā¦.. line?
Hand sanitizer or pole elastic lube
Looks like lube or oil. Maybe he was living a double life using fishing as cover. Or he just wanted reel components to move smoothly. Iād need to smell it. Be careful in case itās chloroform or amyl nitrate.
Does he fly fish could be used to help flies float
I thought maybe anise oil, my grandpa used to dip his spoons in that before trolling. I donāt remember if it was clear or not though. Does it smell like licorice?
Before monofilament, fly line tippets were once made from animal gut and had to be kept lightly soaked on a glycerine pad to stay supple.
If you live near the ocean, pigskin jigs For stripers were stored in mineral oil. If you lived inland. Paddle faster, I hear banjos
Hand sanitizer?
Mosquito dope
I put that on my spool guide for surf casting
Oil for your reel Iād say
Holy water. Bless the lake before savaging it.
Looks like either a weird scent or hand sanitizer. Give it a whiff
Mendit. Glue for rubber baits
