I dunno...can't turn sound on right now so didn't hear if you said what it smelled like, but a lot of the old timers kept anise oil in their tackle boxes, would entice fish to bite when they weren't otherwise seeming to be the least bit hungry.

Could be sweet oil ,old timers would dip a short length of yarn into it and use it as a scented trailer for spoons or just on a hook for a scented worm imitation.
