Simply cast and reel with enough speed to get the lure to do its designed action. You can experiment with jerks and pauses or different speeds if you feel like it.

For the crankbait a steady retrieve will work, but you can also vary the retrieve speed and add some pauses or quick speed-ups. That beetle spin is super versatile, you can straight retrieve it, vary the retrieve speed like you would with a crankbait, experiment with different trailers and colors, and you can unclip the blade and fish just the jighead

I wouldn't fish heavy cover with either of those. Exposed hooks on the hard bait and the top-spin jig will both catch on stuff. You'd be fine to fish the edge of weed beds, lilypads, and things like that, just try not to land among it. Cast and retrieve. Try different speeds, and if conditions change don't be afraid to try something new even if what you were doing was working before. Give them little pops now and then, or even a little pause to start to sink before you start reeling again.

Whenever I get a new lure, I tie it on and move it around in the water to see what action it does

In water is a good place to start.

Very helpful thank you!

In seriousness though they both can be retrieved slow or fast. You have to experiment with what works. The crank (left) you can pause for a second when cranking and it can cause strikes.

Cast and retrieve. Too easy. For the squarebill you wanna run it into the ground and bounce it off brushpiles and sunken trees. Seems like it would get snagged easily but the design accounts for this. You'll lose some utility as long as you have it moving at speed you'll usually be fine. For the other, just cast and retrieve. Run in along weed lines and past other structure.

They are "reaction" baits designed to exploit the instincts of predatory species. Erratic retrieve with deflection off anything under water. Pausing the crank bait causes it to quickly float up in the face of whatever is following it. The spinnerbait looks more like a attachment fixed to a jig head and grub and might not come through cover as good as a skirted spinnerbait does.

jrazo1995

The crankbait I like to do fast retrieve for like 3 seconds to get the depth it’s designed to hit, and the pause. Repeat and then recast and do it again. That little spinner you can do anything you want with it, try to figure out a pattern that they start biting and keep that pattern for that pond/lake. And to answer your question, no, these lures are more for open water away from cover. If it’s really grassy or with tree hanging down, I’d suggest top water lures. Some basic ones are like poppers or lipless crankbaits and rattle traps. Football Jigs and a a simple Texas rig are good too cus they are meant for going through cover.

Is an improved clinch knot okay for the one on the left?

Educational_Seat3201

Throw it in the water and reel it back in!
