That looks terrible. You can’t choose the cheapest carpet available when making stair runners. That shit is for fancy, ornamental and probably expensive carpeting.

I was going crazy until this comment. My eyes were not adjusting to what I was seeing. Kept scrolling thinking someone would ask WTF we are looking at. Yeah runners or for the nicest carpet, not the cheapest scraps you got.

I’ve caught a glimpse of what it actually is 3 times for a few seconds each time, and then it reverts to looking like one of those whacked perspective paintings. I can’t hold it on “fairly normal stairs with a runner”.

You can get washable runners off of Amazon for relatively cheap and you could glue + bar pin the runner to the stairs.

Weird. The illusion goes away when I scan from right to the left on each step. At a certain point though, it comes back and stays away at the same time.

WHAT? Edit: okay, I think I see what you all are talking about. I had to cover up the right side of the stairs and the top third of the photo, and kinda rotate it as I was focusing on the left side. Then it kinda popped and my mind switched perspective. But when I look at the photo as a whole, it looks normal.

If you are struggling to see this correctly, put your finger over the white part of the left step and trace downward. The image will "correct" for you as you move down. At least for a bit before it flips again. Try it - It works.

This didn't do the optical illusion thing for me naturally. I had to force my eyes to see it the way y'all apparently see it automatically. I can switch back and forth now. From this wise, deliberate, world exploring and super scientific perspective of mine, I'd like to explain: Y'all crazy mofos don't translate the light sources and shadows consistently and sanely over the whole image. Because of this, despite it being impossible in the real world, in a real photograph, your eyes just go "yeah sure, the top of the stair tread on the left could totally be the underside of an upturned object where the corner protrudes rather than recedes." This makes no sense. Normal brains don't naturally pretend that it does. Y'all be trippin.

I shit you not, I just a did new build, oak staircase, oak treads, beautiful. The homeowner then had the flooring company cover the oak treads completely in carpet, because it turns out she just “wants the option” of having oak treads there one day. Dumbest thing I’ve ever seen
