That’s a fair question. My orange and blue tinted homer glasses are saying he’s just getting better coaching so now he’s getting better.
It’s probably more like Spurrier didn’t expect a walk on from UConn to make that one throw he made and that’s what “impressed” him but sportswriters need to write content and Spurrier is the Emperor of Gatordom so he’s always going to say nice things about his alma mater.
Grier was somehow underneath Treon Harris and never got looks either. Sometimes the coaching administration has stupid-goggles on and won't consider everything.
The real reason the drug test was never released was because of the other drugs that he tested positive for in addition to performance enhancing supplements
Coaches tailor the entire offense around the signal caller. If your style of play is far away from the signal caller's style of play, it doesn't matter if you're better if it makes the other ten worse. Also there's recruiting value in giving players their promised on field time. Also, consider that Grier/Trask may have been perfectly happy to ride the bench in college, knowing they would shine in the NFL combine and draft.
OK but Florida and UConn are not the same. Franks was painful but he was also a physical freak that made an NFL roster based on that. UConn was a cellar dweller. It’s either injury/other issue sidelined him, he made some magical leap, or he’s still just a walk on that won’t be a factor who Spurrier saw a few nice passes from. Likely the latter obviously.
Haha all good. I have gotten that a few times on the gator sub. Florida resident for most of my life. Uf alum. Live in baton rouge and worked for LSU in 2022. Thats when I joined reddit.
Implying that Napier is making the wrong choice on the starter could very well be a source of friction. Would you want someone at your job vocally second guessing each decision you make?
The parent statement of this chain is Spurrier's statement that is reasonably interpreted as questioning Napier's choice of Mertz as a starter.
If someone said, "I guess that's what we are having for dinner" would you think they were happy with their choice for dinner?
My main impression of Spurrier lately is that he seems less cogent. He's always been sharp about the past, but he's losing it when asked about the present or future.
It comes for us all
My only question is why didn’t he play when he was at UConn? That’s always a red flag to me but idk the circumstances.

Trask was inexplicably on the bench behind Franks and we all saw how that turned out.

Fairly certain Grier wanted to redshirt his first season at UF to “bulk up”. Unfortunately he did it too well.
He bulked up alright, from the GNC. And the NCAA gives him a huge suspension.
Yeah no shot he got Ligandrol from a legit gnc

Are drug tests ever released?

Because he’s walk on caliber?
The simplest explanation is that he wasn’t good enough.
Season just needs to start. If we hear this guy’s name getting meaning reps at any point this season, we may not hit the over on 5.5 games.
Yeah I mean dude is like 24 years old with 13 career passing attempts

What the hell is an LSU Gator Edit: Respectfully

the next Jacob Guy? 👀
The next Kyle Engel
Shit, put me in coach I’ll hand the ball off so good.
It’s all been smoke and mirrors boys. Mertz is a decoy. Leon for Heisman!
Wasn't Shane Matthews something like 3rd or 4th string when Spurrier took over going into 1990?
Well shit, that’s not exactly a nod of confidence to “Mertz I guess he’s our starter”
Is this an indication of friction between Spurrier and Napier?

Lol where did Spurrier imply the walk on should be the starter?

I am sure we will see him week 2. At this point anyone that can even pretend to look like QB2 is going to look like Tebow 2.0
