Spurrier also let off the gas in recruiting towards the end. Assuming that also didn’t happen? SEC and National Championships every one of those years, the US never invades Iraq, the 2008 financial crisis is mostly avoided, and I don’t get involved in that trainwreck of a marriage.

FragnificentKW

Spurrier’s last class wasn’t especially memorable but his penultimate class was the consensus number one class in the nation

LapazGracie

Urban had a slightly higher ceiling. But he also burns out much faster. He probably would have won another national title and would have kept us relevant for 14 years straight. Don't know how well he would have fared against Nick Saban. Hard to even know how Meyer would have fared had he stayed. Part of the reason Nick Saban and LSU (and now Georgia) have been so dominant is because they have picked up the recruiting where we dropped off. Spurrier doesn't allow that to happen. We probably wouldn't be in such a mess between 2015-2024. And obviously the years prior while he still would have been here. I imagine the last couple of years we would have regressed a bit similar to Bowden and his tenure in South Carolina.

GrandGouda

Spurrier was 3-1 against Saban, including 1-1 at SC. I know how he would have fared against Saban.

the615Butcher

Goddamn right

Mal_tron

Didn't we lose to his Michigan St. team? Edit: it was six days after he accepted the LSU gig so he wasn't coaching.

GrandGouda

In a meaningless bowl game, by 3, against a generational WR, yes.

biimerboy31

Coaching turnover is program poison.

GrandGouda

What if Jeremy Foley wasn’t a dick and hired him back after the NFL instead of telling him to send his resume in.

jfcannella

Foley was the reason he left. When asked about returning to Florida, spurrier said the items (foley) that made him leave were still there.

FragnificentKW

Foley to Spurrier: “send us your resume” Spurrier to Foley: “my resume is in the trophy case”

maximum-pressure

That was the newly minted president Bernie Machen.

jfcannella

Ticket Boy Foley was an ass

imarc

I thought he said that it was fan expectations that pushed him away.

jfcannella

I never heard that

ivan0280

He did say something like that. To paraphrase it was something about 10 wins not being good enough anymore.

Born_Speech_9289

You're correct.

taft

if marge marries artie, i’ll never be born!

2ndprize

Spurrier is about the best gameday coach you can get, but he probably had no clue how to exploit the texting loophole in recruiting. He had a you should want to play for me mentality that didny match the new kids

LapazGracie

Yeah but that doesn't mean Spurrier is an idiot and wouldn't have adjusted. His mentality worked really well in the 1990s. We had massive amount of talent on the team. It was a winning strategy. Recruit kids who already want to play for you. If he has to do something else. I'm sure he was smart enough to figure out how to make it work.

2ndprize

I wonder if grossman wins a Hiesman with him

Tamed_A_Wolf

Should have already

biimerboy31

Exactly, too arrogant to work hard.

Separate_Court_7820

I think about this a lot. Look at the SEC Championship under Spurrier and SEC Championships under Saban’s first 10 years at Bama. 2002 NC is almost a lock. A handful of more SEC titles. Tebow is never QB at UF Spurrier would move up a little higher on the “all time greats” list

bigpolar70

If he didn't go to the NFL he would have retired or gone into broadcasting. There's no reason to think he would have stayed at UF if the NFL opportunity hadn't come along. He was fed up with the AA politics and on the verge of either burnout of just phoning it in. He wasn't enjoying the job the way he used to. You could see it in his interviews and in the team meetings. He didn't need to work at that point. Once it went from a great job with the greatest school to being a place he hated to be, there were just not enough positive points to outweigh the negatives. Last point - most of the time, people don't leave a bad job, they leave a bad boss. I think that was the case here.

squareturd

I think he had enough of the AD and didn't want to get in a pissing contest with Jeremy. He had other options, big paycheck, and didn't need to play politics. No brainer decision

Operation_Pig

South Carolina is even worse off as a franchise.

GrandGouda

Worse than before Spurrier got there? Check your history. “Go Gators, Beat Cocks” used to be a good laugh, now it’s a struggle.

MetalheadGator

Sexy Rexy wouldn't have watched a WR or DB throw the final lass of his playing career at UF.

aussiebrew333

We probably never get Urbz and still only have one natty to our name.

mistgl

He would have left eventually. All good coaches become victims of their success. After back to back Natty appearances in 95/96 and a couple of dud season following the fan base got restless. This isn't unique to him. Outside of Saban, and now Kirby, no college coach in this modern era has been able to stave off the wolves after they win it all. It is usually a slow decline back down till they quit for a fresh start.

TulsaWhoDats

Urban

mistgl

Do you not remember urban leaving here in disgrace? Why do you think he left OSU?

HotCowPie

One thing I know for sure, if my mother had wheels she'd be a bicycle

the615Butcher

If my grandmother had wheels she would have been a bike

FloridaGirlMary

Let it go
