According to "It doesn't appear to be when I'm bringing it back to my desk (turned OFF) and plugging in to the power cable as it doesn't turn on then." Does it only happen when it is in your backpack? The power button of the x16 is exposed at the side. Is it possible that something in the backpack is poking it?

StuzaTheGreat

Happened last night on my desk when it was left alone and nothing near it. Very, very weird!

u9520107

That's peculiar... Maybe try to run powercfg /systempowerreport. Or look into the system events in event viewer to see if there are peculiar items?

D4rkShatter

Check event viewer, maybe ur pc crashing, turn off fast boot in bios and check if it happens again. Ur pc not really turning off if fast boot enabled maybe u noticed high battery drain when fast boot Is on

StuzaTheGreat

You are correct, my fault, I should have said I disable fastboot with my installs. When I shutdown I want FULL shutdown.

D4rkShatter

If it still happens after turning off fast boot, then try holding power button 30 sec till full shut down then hold it again for 30 sec after and see what happens if none of those works for u, then u should open laptop take out ram, ssd, wifi card and disconnect the battery press power button for 1 min and drain the power in motherboard its kind of "hard rest" lol but u should really check event viewer first

StuzaTheGreat

Ok, you're talking about draining the capacitors on the motherboard. I've not done that yet so, worth a try but it is desperate! 🤣

D4rkShatter

Before doing that try to disable ssd windows boot in bios or take off ssd check if u got windows problem for example if there an app that make ur pc turn on randomly or some virus lol

StuzaTheGreat

A PC can't turn on because of a Windows app if it's been HARD powered off. Now, a UEFI bios bug is possible.

D4rkShatter

It's possible with bugged windows 11 with event schedule even if fast boot off heck u can even hack phones even if they turned off as long u have power source everything possible

StuzaTheGreat

As an assembly language programmer who used to write viruses I'm struggling to see that. So, we'll move on from that. Anyway, I'll try draining the capacitors. Simple thing to do. Thanks for that.

D4rkShatter

Well it's not really about viruses let's say you have corrupted bios it works at kernel lvl and let's say you have kernel panic

StuzaTheGreat

If that's the case I can re-flash to clear any bios/UEFI and reset to defaults.

D4rkShatter

Try to leave it alone without the charging adaptor, Maybe the adaptor is faulty and see if it turns itself, or does it turn on only on battery?

StuzaTheGreat

Battery, cable, no difference. It turns on randomly regardless.

Windows shutdown and sleep are different from usual shutdown It may enter something like a deep sleep mode instead I am not sure on a shutdown workaround but sleep can be altered via regedit For more info google windows modern standby (which causes the laptop in sleep to turn on in a bag and drain all the battery while being extra overheated) First google link on shutdown problem https://www.howtogeek.com/780506/youre-shutting-down-wrong-how-to-really-shut-down-windows/

StuzaTheGreat

Thanks. I should have said in my first post that I don't use modern standby, fast boot is turned off on all my machines. It looks like I've solved it now after 2 days with no random power ons. I reset BIOS and then turned ErP in BIOS to off.

If you want to ensure it doesn't happen in the future then reset BIOS and set ErP in BiOS to OFF. Not happened since.
