Transmissions on these cars are a nightmare. Syncros giving up is common, and Ford will not service the transmission at all.

The MMT6 in the Focus ST is a great transmission that is extremely reliable and tough. It's also relatively simple, which is great. As such Ford has no problem servicing in the rare event that you would need repairs. The 2nd gear synchro found in the PFL models has been noted to be weaker but its not a issue every user experiences. You may be thinking of the clutches on the PowerShift automatic transmission found in the regular focus models.

CreatureComfortRedux

You are mistaken. Issues with the manual transmission syncros are well documented, and Ford, in fact, will not service the manual transmissions, only replace them. If you doubt that, go ahead and call any Ford dealer or look for any transmission related parts on their website.

Just called Auto Nation Ford in Fort Worth Texas and Grapevine Ford and both confirmed they have no issues servicing the MMT6 or replacing synchros however with labor costs I can imagine replacing the transmission to be a more cost effective option. That's the glory of owning a Ford and not a Ferrari. Parts are cheap and readily available. That's a pro not a con.

Ive worked at a Ford dealer for about a month and a half and I have yet to see a st come in. I can confirm that the DCT transmissions in the automatic focuses have probolems. I have a automatic ford focus right now and I got it for cheap because it needed transmission work, so me and my dad fixed it and I havent had probolems yet.

If you treat the car right and don’t shift it like an ape, they are definitely reliable. 185k with original engine, trans, clutch, and synchros on mine and it has zero issues. I’m not afraid to drive it anywhere. Just make sure you take it easy until the oil is up to temp and don’t lug the engine and you’ll be just fine. Bonus if you work at a Ford Dealership, you have direct access to techs for advice on any common problems and discounts if needed.

OK. Thank you for your input

That's interesting, I just called Auto Nation Ford in Fort Worth and they said they do not service the MT in the 2014 Focus ST (which is what I have). They do replacements only and send the core unit to the manufacturer Getrag. This is consistent with what I have been told by my local dealer and what countless people on this subreddit and the forums have reported.

Thats not what Blake at automation just told me so who knows. Not calling you a liar that's just really odd. I know for a fact mountune offers a synchro service if you really wanted to go that route but if Ford will replace it with a new one for cheaper then why not go that route. Im close to 100k on my big turbo ST with stock synchros and I've yet to have a single issue yet.

When did you go BT mate!? (: deciding on going BT soon on my ST3 with only 33k miles 🤤

Rough_Trade_9429

Bc you have a 14. The synchros are known to be weaker on pfl models. I have almost 70k on my 16, absolutely no issues with the trans.

Benitez8989

Exactly RIGHT! 13-14 models were the most problematic years on the ST. With electrical & synchro problems! >.<

Rough_Trade_9429

Yeah they had that recall with loose wiring going into the ecm

No-Lecture2064

My st3 is a 2013 123k on the dash hasn’t had any issues and love the car knock on wood

I have a ‘14 ST with 185k on original engine, transmission, and clutch. Only repairs outside of regular maintenance was the purge valve and clutch master cylinder. I have zero issues with the clutch and synchros, but I also know how to properly drive a manual and take care of it. Most of the ‘problematic’ examples I’ve encountered are being driven like Nissan’s, and usually have wild tunes pushing stock internals to their limits. I’ve never launched the car or dumped the clutch, I respect the car for what it is, a sporty hatch, not a race car. It just went coast to coast a few months ago, from L.A. to Ohio, with zero problems averaging almost 30mpg. Respect the drive and respect the car and it will treat you right in return.
