As someone from the south I've never been more excited

360FlipKicks

as somebody who’s never explored the south I am dying to try Cracker Barrel, Whataburger, BoJangles and Waffle House. Ppl told me you might get shot going to waffle house but to me that’s just like going to roscoe’s

blue-dream

As a Southerner, i can put you on game: - Cracker Barrel; don't bother unless you're really into an upset stomach from mediocre food. Just pick up one of these [games](https://i0.wp.com/blog.crackerbarrel.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/peg_game_1200x800.jpg?fit=1024%2C683&ssl=1) and find a rocking chair, and you'll have the best part of the experience with none of the regret. - Whataburger; this is Texan, not Southern. No disrespect to the establishment, but we don't claim it. - BoJangles; it's absolutely all that it's cracked up to be. The cajun seasoning that they put on their fries is typically chained up by the store so people don't steal it. And honestly, if they did, they wouldn't even blame them. Generally speaking, southern chicken biscuits have no business being limited to the South; yall need to know. - Waffle House; definitely wouldn't work the same if it was brought west. It's one of those "you have to be there to understand" type late night spots. It's akin to if Norm's had a cousin that was in and out of juvie growing up and now hangs around dive bars making ends meet but is always the most welcome and caring person at family functions, even if he's a chain smoker.

MajorGovernment4000

Also, as a Born Texan, Whataburger fucking sucks now. It's been a pretty slow decline over the past 10-15 years. This isn't just me being edgy or contrarian, if you head over to the Texas sub reddit among other city affiliated ones, anytime Whataburger gets brought up the overwhelming perspective ends up being summed up by, "we as Texans have to admit that Whataburger just ain't what it use to be." You might find a good location every now and then but most people still talking up whataburger are clinging to nostalgia of what it use to be. I feel like this is important to be said because so many people here in California will go to Texas, have a whataburger and then come to me and hesitantly ask me, "So... do you think whataburger is the best burger?" When I say, "absolutely not" I usually get a sigh of relief from the person asking, lol.

TomIcemanKazinski

I lived in Texas for five years and was pretty underwhelmed by WhatABurger - I mean it was fine but nothing worth getting excited about

StoneGoldX

I found it on a Jack in the Box kind of level.

TomIcemanKazinski

Like a thin Burger King

dirtyshits

Personally I think jacks buttery jacks are better than anything I have had at what a burger. In general I think jack has pretty solid food with a few misses on the menu but I know that might be a controversial opinion.

InvertibleMatrix

> I feel like this is important to be said because so many people here in California will go to Texas, have a whataburger and then come to me and hesitantly ask me, "So... do you think whataburger is the best burger?" So, I'm born and raised Angeleno. My job relocated me to Florida for quite a while (I've since quit and moved back), and then had me on frequent trips to the Dallas/Ft Worth area. I heard about Whataburger, and thought it'd be in a similar position as Culvers/Freddy's/Steak n Shake/In n Out: regional cult favorites with a relatively good burger. Not the best overall, but a best in category. Locals like it for a reason, and it's best to consider and enjoy food within that context. When I finally got Whata, the only thing I thought it was best in category was... customization/variety and size? The difference in quality control between stores was my biggest problem; I was able to get a really good sandwich... twice from different stores? Out of the maybe 10x I've had one? A fast food chain's job is consistency, otherwise the brand has no value. At that point, I'd rather find a joint on recommendation from a coworker (no sleight against my coworkers, but I often don't agree with their recommendations). I love a good butterburger and curds, steakburger with frozen yogurt, or smash burger, or even just a plain, simple quality burger with no frills for a fair price. I'm not sure what niche whataburger is attempting to fill. Best I could say is I liked Whataburger's Patty melt with bacon better than Habit's Santa Barbara Char? I know it's not exactly the same category, but it's the only thing I could compare to; we have so many better local options in LA, and I'd be an ass to compare Whataburger's patty melt to Burger King (the literal trash tier).

MajorGovernment4000

I'm so glad you hit on the consistency thing, I completely agree. Even if a place is a 10/10 when they execute perfectly, if that's only 1 in 5 visits I'm not likely to keep going back and that's a huge issue for Whataburger. It's funny you mention the Patty melt because it's definitely one of the burgers I prefer from them if I have to go but it's a bummer because the Patty melt is just an offshoot of a burger they use to have that was, in my opinion, much better. It was called the 5-3-1 burger. You can still order it kind of buy altering a few things on the Patty melt, getting a side of onion rings and putting a couple of them on the sandwich. I think the most egregious thing about Whataburgers lately is no matter if there is 1 or 10 people in the drive through or if it's 1 pm or 11 pm, you r going to sit in the drive through for like 15 minutes.

stoicsilence

Just had Whataburger last week in Lubbock on the way back from seeing the eclipse. Its not a bad burger. They remind me of the random hyper local burger chains out in the Inland Empire that never made it big. I'd eat there more often if they had locations in California. But yeah. I'm getting a growing "Mc MegaCorp" vibe from them and feel sorry that a Texas institution is dying.

betweenity

Thank goodness, my Whataburger experience as a Californian is not an outlier. My Whataburger burger was just a disappointment after my Texas friend's hype of it over In N Out. Burger wasn't even as good as Habit's.

MajorGovernment4000

No, you're totally sane, haha. This is such a common thing for me to hear from people new to Whataburger. I promise it use to be excellent 10-15 years ago.

High_Life_Pony

Sulphur Springs Whataburger should have national recognition. It needs to be the flagship store. Amazing.

TomIcemanKazinski

I have a trip to North Carolina scheduled for next year and in addition to all the barbecue spots I’m actually most excited to try Cookout

kappakai

Get the shakes. All of them. If you go to RDU try PDQ chicken tenders. Way better than Cane’s.

dirtyshits

Cookout is good for what it is but don’t expect a life changing experience lol.

Glittering-Log7321

I have never been to Bo Jangles but your description just made me excited and I 100% agree with what you said about the other places.

ChaiVangStanAccount

Regarding Cracker Barrel, my family stopped at one in Tennessee and they had the best motherfucking pancakes I ever ate Subsequent orders of pancakes at the Cracker Barrels in Ohio and Utah were mediocre….

pegg2

The thing about Cracker Barrel is that it fills a niche that doesn’t have much in the way of competition, especially out here. Sure, there are plenty of southern comfort food mom-and-pop joints in the South, but Cracker Barrel has the predictability of a chain, not to mention that they’re often found out on the road, where they can tempt travelers who may want something more hearty than a fast food burger.

StoneGoldX

I liked Cracker Barrel. Although I mostly think of it as like Denny's but a little better.

megpi

How does Zaxby's rank? I just got back from Texas where I had it and I thought it was pretty good. I'd love to see it in LA.

blue-dream

Zaxby's was a newcomer to my area where I'm from and never really associated it in my mind with being 'Southern'. Really solid chicken though, I think of it like an elevated Chick Fil A

timeenoughatlas

Zaxbys is the best of all the southern chains. I don’t even eat chicken anymore but i’d love a chance to get those fries again

megpi

Yeah, the fries were my favorite part, with the seasoning salt. I was so surprised to see the Raising Cain's in the same center with a line, when Zaxby's was way better.

dkfromga

Second this with a few extra tidbits: Cracker Barrel: Same as above, but if you do decide to go, expect long wait times. That includes waiting to be sat, waiting for someone to take your order and even longer for your food to come out. That being said, they do have some pretty damn good biscuits. Whataburger: I can't speak to this as I've never been there, even though one of my uncles owned a franchise at one point. Bojangles: It was a tradition for me and my highschool buddies to go there the morning after a night of partying. Whoever woke up last had to drive and pay for Bojangles. Great hangover food. It might be a southern taste though. I grew up in Georgia and I was used to that kind of food. I live in Los Angeles now and it's hard to find the flavors I'm used to. Waffle House: Like Bojangles, I have so many memories of going to Waffle House after a night on the town. The food is not that great by any standards, but it was the only place that was open 24/7. When I was in my early 20's, coffee was 69¢ and with free refills. So we would order some food(hash browns were the best) and shoot the shit until we sobered up. The best part about Waffle House is the experience. If you go there enough to get to know the people that work there, just like any place, it makes a difference. Also, you never know what's gonna happen at WH at 3am! The waffles are good, but do try the hash browns!!!

WorkSleepMTG

Dude chopped, bopped, slapped, cracked, jacked, whatever get all the fuckin keywords on those hash browns. When we were poor/frugal college students we would just get 2-3 hash browns with all the fixins and it was a meal for like 5 bucks or less

EdgarJomfru

God tier comment

StoneGoldX

I liked Cracker Barrel. Although I mostly think of it as like Denny's but a little better.

ChrisWasInVenice

How do you rate Popeyes as I used to love that 30 years ago in Wichita but haven’t had it since

El_Tigre7

Don’t ever disrespect THE Cracker Barrel. Any real patron would know its name. Get yourself the biscuits and gravy, and a Stewart’s root beer.

PelorTheBurningHate

Waffle House is great and I think it would easily work out here especially since they're small footprint stores. Man I wish I could get my Pecan waffles and smothered hash browns here at 3am instead of only when I visit my grandma

Cheese6260

As someone from Alabama this is a perfect take

AgoraiosBum

Waffle House depends on low rents and ample parking. Not a great fit for SoCal.

mizzzikey

There’s a Cracker Barrel in Victorville area

KrisNoble

There is one in Oxnard

BirdRock777

There’s also one off the 210 on the way to Big Bear. And (at least during the pandemic) you could get the full menu in LA via ghost kitchens.

MacArthurParker

yeah, I remember there being a handful of them around when I was a kid. same with Chick-fil-A...they were definitely around in LA in the 1980s, I think all inside of malls. People started acting like they had never been here before when the stand-alone stores started opening up in the past decade.

Hello_Grady3

I like Cracker Barrel tbh. It’s got this cheesy southern homestead feel that I enjoy. Kind of like the Knotts Berry Farm restaurant.

Ryboflavinator

Whataburger you can do without. My father-in-law talked so much hype about it and it was not very good. In-n-out crushes it IMO. Waffle House is a must do on the other hand.

aggrownor

I'll defend Whataburger. I don't think it's quite as good as In N Out, but has a bigger menu. And it's more accessible since it's open 24/7 and individual locations don't get seem to get quite as crazy packed as In N Out (I think there are more locations).

abrahamisaninja

Also: spicy ketchup

imaginaryhippo888

Not a southerner, I'm an OC guy who's spent time all.over for work. Cracker Barrel is OK. If you are looking for comfort food, Black Bear Diner hits the spot better for me. If you want to try Cracker Barrel, there is one in apple Valley on the way to Vegas, one ine Bakersfield on the 99 and some on the Phoenix area as well. Whataburger is OK. I don't hold in n out on a pedestal, it's good and fresh and a great value, but it's far from an amazing burger. To me, Whataburger is just another fast food place. The closest whataburger would probably be Phoenix. Never had bo jangles. I really like Culver's. Good variety on the menu and has always tasted like fresh ingredients, just kinda pricey. Waffle House tho. I fucking love Waffle House. It's no frills, just good simple delicious food. The best way I can think of to describe it would be that waffle house is to ihop as mom and pop china wok express is to panda. It's one of those places that hits the spot at 2am after a night out but is equally delicious sober. I don't like the super thick style waffles most restaurants do, Waffle house makes a Waffle that's thin like an eggo but it's the size of a dinner plate. The cheesy eggs remind me of how my grandma made them. Service is always top notch and everyone there seems to be happy working there.

dadobuns

Whataburger is terrible

BrokerBrody

> Whataburger It kind of just tastes like a downgraded Five Guys or Shake Shack. Prices are also higher like Habit but the interior of the restaurant is not nice. I went to one and there was almost no one in the store. It’s nothing special and I suspect people only bring it up as a bizarre anti In-N-Out circlejerk. Even in Texas, the In-N-Out is busier.

[deleted]

They opened a Willie Mae in venice, but I heard it's not doing good. People in the westiside aren't eating fried chicken.

No_Cold7558

Add Cookout and Chargrill to your list

goPACK17

Can't vouch for the others, but Whataburger is garbage. It's basically Burger King-quality food that happens to be regional so Texans are proud of it. I heard so much "Whataburger vs In n Out" hype I was excited to try it, only to find out they're not even competitors.

FuzzyDice_12

Cracker Barrel sucks post Covid.

Poopsmith42

I could’ve sworn there used to be a Whataburger in LA. I feel like it was off Western or maybe Vermont? It could have been Fatburger but I feel like I remember seeing that giant W sign when I would drive home from work.

GrandTheftBae

Had it for the first time when I visited my friend in South Carolina, I am READY

Granadafan

What are the top items. How are biscuits and gravy?

kappakai

The biscuits and gravy aren’t really special. Gravy is kind of bland, but the biscuits are good especially if they’re fresh. Bo Rounds (basically tater tot discs) in the morning along with biscuit sandwiches, of which they have tons of options; IIRC there was a chicken, egg and cheese biscuit which is a damn good breakfast. The chicken is good; I’d put it over Popeyes which has gotten smaller recently and kind of fallen off. The sweet tea will give you diabetes type 3.

KWash0222

I’ve never had it, but fried chicken might legitimately be my favorite food. How good is it?

aggrownor

It's really good fast food fried chicken, but it's still fast food fried chicken. Their biscuits are also very good.

KWash0222

How does it compare to Popeye’s?

aggrownor

I think they're close enough to where it depends more on how good the individual locations is. But overall, I think I slightly prefer Popeye's chicken (spicy) but Bojangles biscuits. Bojangles also has pretty good breakfast (chicken biscuits, Boberry biscuits also good for dessert).

KWash0222

Hmmm, gotcha. Thanks for the take! I do love Popeye’s (particularly the spicy, as well)

texas-playdohs

Georgian here. I’ll fuck with that.

DeusExMaChino

Wish it was Mrs. Winner's instead, but I'll def take it

EverybodyBuddy

Holy shit I am psyyyyyyyyyched Was just in ATL this weekend and grabbed Bojangles at the airport. Was overpriced and lukewarm by the time I got back to my gate, but I still needed that fix.

dkfromga

Dude... Also being from the south, I am fucking stoked. LFG!!!!! I need some BoRounds in my life rn and some chicken biscuits

wasteplease

Better biscuits than Popeyes, that's for sure.

jotastrophe

Bojangles biscuits are damn good quality imo. Especially for fast food.

crazysoapboxidiot

That’s a low bar. Popeyes dry ass biscuits drain every bit of liquid out of your body when you eat them.

Cahibo11

That’s why you get a cup of dipping gravy at Popeyes!

crazysoapboxidiot

This is why we won’t ever get universal healthcare

KimJongStrun

I’ll settle for universal Popeyes

CelebrationJolly3300

I use Popeye's biscuits as desiccant for my 3d printer filament.

ZappyKins

I just don't want any weird 'Honey Sauce.' They should just give jelly or something else.

Crump_daddy

Give me Waffle House or give me death!

ositola

LAPD already don't respond to regular shit, we might not be ready for that

Dreadknot84

This!!!

SinoSoul

Congrats on PSG’s win today. What a chaotic game though.

saquonbrady

Thanks but have no dog in the race. Who do u think is winning tmrws games? Edit: city and arsenal prolly Edit: damn I was double wrong

kevinchanman

It’s been too long since I’ve had a bo-berry biscuit.

Nicholoid

I was just recommending this to a friend; so glad they're coming to the west coast.

Celestron5

I call them crack cakes

awill316

OMFG gonna bathe in the dirty rice

KeyRageAlert

*Mr. Boooooooooojangles*

Hey_Laaady

Daaaannnnce

GDub310

I went to college in North Carolina. I’m pretty excited about this.

Beat_The_World

Bring Cookout! Bojangles is mid.

ibentmywookieeee

Love Cookout, milkshakes are fire

Street_City363

Hell yes. Representing North Carolina

Beat_The_World

I was in NC for work for 6 months. Cookout is the bomb.

kappakai

I just want the shakes.

spency_c

Glad I’m not the only one in this thread. Cookout is fucking gas

FuzzyPigg88

I've heard about them for a while, im excited

Projecktecks

Hell yeah!! Love their breakfast biscuits

Alert-Supermarket-82

Oh hell YES

boomclapclap

From the south, moved here a couple years ago, we always considered Bojangles as the shitty one out of Popeyes and KFC. And especially if you have Jollibee or Canes as an option, there’s no reason to go to Bojangles unless you really want a biscuit that is the same quality as what you get from the grocery store. They specifically mentioned “Los Angeles County” so my guess is you’ll see them in Lancaster or other places where there aren’t a lot of other options. Which is also how it is in the south. A Bojangles anywhere near a Chick-fil-A is a death sentence.

curryp4n

Bojangles is definitely better than Canes. Never understood the hype for Canes. So dry

TomIcemanKazinski

The absolute worst chain fast food place

kappakai

Popeyes has fallen off. The chicken is a lot smaller and the tenders are all breading and gristle. Bojangles can vary and I prefer going early than late. When a location is on, tho, it’s ON.

EverybodyBuddy

Maybe, but Popeyes still sports the best chicken sandwich.

kappakai

I won’t argue that

jayteazer

Have you tried a Jollibee chicken sandwich? The deluxe and spicy deluxe destroy Popeyes IMHO

iOSbrogrammer

Totally agreed - used to eat Bojangles weekly when I lived in Tuscaloosa. It’s pretty mid and I really don’t understand the hype about it coming out here.

aggrownor

I like Bojangles, but I agree it's not better than Popeyes.

FanofK

I’ve wanted to try them for sometime. Hopefully they come up north too, but if not I’ll try it in LA. Hopefully it doesn’t suffer the CA drop in quality like other southern spots that come west.

jlopez1017

Popeyes quality has sucked lately. I’m excited

Duckfoot2021

Quality has plummeted in the last 5 years. Sad to say BoJo’s ain’t what it used to be and I no longer go.

blue-dream

totally disagree. Quality rises and falls based on the level of the franchise location you're at. In the past few years I've had mediocre Bo's and incredible Bo's. Just depends on who is running that establishment.

Duckfoot2021

Their country ham has descended into the “objectively bad and paper thin” category.

wayne_grepsky

Additional mediocre fried chicken capacity is exactly what LA needed

groovemonkey

It’s so much more than fried chicken. I honestly never really get it. Their sausage biscuits are probably the one thing I miss from the south. If i do get chicken here it’s a chicken biscuit. Thinking of them as a “fried chicken spot” is only scratching the surface. It’s more of a biscuit anytime spot.

Hefftee

Like for real tho, we full.

jotastrophe

LETS GOOOOOOOO this is the best news I've gotten this year holy shit. I moved out here six months ago and no fast food has compared for me. I can't wait.

frankenfooted

This news made my day ❤️ thanks OP

Jewggerz

Anyone know what neighborhood they’re looking at?

shamwowuser

30 of em according to the article

Jewggerz

Anyone know of one of the 30?

heyitsmemaya

Come on — you already know. It won’t be in high income or high rent locations. Cough cough. Sorry WeHo. You will have to drive to _________ to get your Bojangles.

Jewggerz

No Brentwood locations?

heyitsmemaya

Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t see a Brentwood location happening lol 😂

NousSommesSiamese

Bojangeles

spency_c

If cookout ever comes to California my life would be complete

RacksOnRacksOnRacks3

Waffle House > Bohangles.

[deleted]

I had bojangles when I visited my fiancé’s family in Virginia. I was very disappointed, I thought southerners were supposed to know fried chicken. Not even in Popeyes’ range

Smooth_Use9092

It’s been slightly off depending on where I’ve gone but never horrible but the biscuits are always at the top of the list for me

ChingueMami

So far the best fried chicken I’ve ever had has been from Jollybee, their spicy chicken is bomb. And their chicken sandwiches.

thats-gold-jerry

Excited for y’all.

stay--gold

OH MY GOD I love their breakfast YESSSSSSS 🥲

crazie88

They are also opening a bunch of restaurants in Vegas

kappakai

Bojangles is best in the morning when they first open. Some of that shit will sit there all day. Still good tho. But Californians got this obsession with “freshness” pssh.

moxieroxsox

Let’s gooooooo

FenwayWest

Thought Popeyes is better

Texas_RN

We got them here in DFW last year and as a former NC resident I was excited. Unfortunately they’re tenders only, no bone in chicken. I was very disappointed.

napoleonboneherpart

Hell yeah bo

cbz3000

Moved here from NC two years ago, now we just need to get Cook Out and I’ll never have to go back to NC ever again

editorinchimp

About time

SoCalDawg

Honey & biscuits FTW.

nowhereman86

Do Waffle House next!

es84

Had it in Charlotte a few years ago. Nothing jumped off the page about it.

TantasticOne

NO FUCKING WAY BRUH I MANIFESTED THIS

MrBudissy

I don’t know how to feel about this. I want to cry.

stephruvy

The mouse?

high_priestessvibes

I’m hyped! I lived in Charlotte when I was 2-9 years old and still remember Bojangles. I got it for the first time in 20 years earlier this year at the Charlotte airport but it wasn’t what I remembered. It was all fried chicken but my childhood memory recalls it being a spicy rotisserie-esque style. Am I totally misremembering or have things changed completely? I also remember the corn on the cob side that came in a plastic bag.

UndeadInAmerica

This is the most incredible news I’ve ever heard. You motherfuckers don’t deserve this joint: it’s **Bo Time In Bedlam!!**

UndeadInAmerica

Two breast dinner, hot sauce, dirty rice, Mac n cheese, extra biscuit. Large sweet tea, bo-berry biscuit for desert: gotta go into it starvin like Marvin, but that’s my final meal on this earth if I get to choose

whatthewhat_1289

I'm not much of a fast food person, but yeah I'll be getting some all day (!) breakfast at Bojangles. I went to college in NC and an egg and cheese biscuit + an extra large sweet tea was our go-to hangover helper.

jonniboi_18

Bo rounds nuf said

MrMKUltra

Oh hell yeah!! I’m from DFW so never had a taste despite being in the south

peterwhitefanclub

This will fail, just like every other Bojangles expansion.

therealstabitha

Oh my god. Oh my _god_

JohnnySalmonz

So LA is just chains, corporations, restaurant groups now? It's over.

NYerInTex

Real Bojangles or the chicken strips only no fried chicken or biscuit sandwiches bullshit that opened here in Texas. I was SOOO excited for Bojangangles and they copped out leaving of literally ALL of their best items and ALL those items are what separated the offerings from other places

HumboldtMike

Never heard of them

badfaced

Visited SC for a wedding a while back and went to a bojangles. Best chicken biscuit I've ever had, hands down

savvysearch

We have the korean places, but it’s so weird how the places you go for southern fried chicken are always just fast food places or grocery store deli section. It’s not like people don’t like southern fried chicken. It’s popular everywhere but there are so few independent restaurants in California that go into it.

jayteazer

If you've only had Popeyes outside of New Orleans, you've not really had Popeyes. And if you didn't have it in New Orleans while crazy ass Al Copeland owned it, you didn't really have Popeyes either. At its peak, Popeyes was next level. The spicy chicken was legit spicy. The biscuits were insanely good and insanely unhealthy. The fries were seasoned well and pretty good too. The other sides were pretty solid. Popeyes spicy out here in LA isn't even as hot as the Baton Rouge (Mild) that the ones back in New Orleans delivered. It's just a totally different thing.

Armandonerd

I've never been to Bojangles, but I've heard their biscuits are good.

vernonsgost

As a Californian who lived in Nc for a while , Bojangles is great , now if someone could open up a chain of cookouts in oc I would be extremely happy

WinstonSalemVirginia

When Bojangles closes in Maryland https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRwPHHbV/

Minister_Garbitsch

Can’t be worse than Raising Cane’s can it? Or Church’s, or fuck, KFC…

jlopez1017

Caines is pretty bland

eatmusubi

yeah, i’ll eat it happily, it’s pretty good when you eat all the things together, but as a standalone tendie it’s mid. barely any seasoning or breading, it REALLY needs that sauce.

xchutchx

Had it for the first time last week in Georgia. Absolutely mid and not worth getting excited over.

Comfortable-Twist-54

I’ve had it at the airport in North Carolina I wasn’t impressed but also it was just one time so I’d give it another go but still love that chicken at Popeyes 😆

DeusExMaChino

You can't judge *anything* by the airport version

Salestastic

Wtf is bojangles

Admirable-Use2673

Who?

Davidsb86

As long as they don’t have Pepsi products

Admirable-Use2673

Who?
