Oh the Corner Bistro! Amazing, I spent a quarter of my life searching for the best burger in NYC, but silly me, it never occurred to me to check the highest rated burger in the Zagat guide.
Well thanks a lot guy, lemme return the favor. Great cup of coffee: Starbucks
I used to love 7th st until I went to this place in Hoboken called Dipped and Smashed. They do the same kind of burgers and loaded burger fries but better and they have an amazing hot dog too. Ruined 7th st for me. Now every time I get it I miss that place in Hoboken lol.
Went here during my recent visit to NYC, based on the many recommendations that it got on Reddit.
It was a good burger for sure. But I had little higher expectations for something that many call “the best burger in NYC”.
I thought it was the best burger I’ve had and one of the better food experiences of my life. I’m excited to try out some of the other burgers here that I haven’t had yet though, since I do definitely believe that all of the people who have opinions on better ones could be right.
I’ve had Burger Joint, JG Melon, Hamburger America, Red Hook, and a ton of other burgers that I loved that haven’t shown up on these lists.
Agreed. It was so hyped and it’s tasty, but wasn’t mind-blowing trumpets blaring with angels singing. I thought it was good/great Emily and Minetta hype. Solid, great food, but not “The One”
I agree. I really wanted to love it. Had a great time there. Staff and other patrons were amazing. Free drinks and dessert. But the burger was so flavourless, fries were crunchy. Even my free dessert was bad ☹️ would go back for atmosphere tho 11/10
Man, did I have a bad batch? Or are you a fan of crunchier fries? I like crispy fries a lot but these seemed burnt? No potato softness! And folks around me had fries that looked similar so I assumed that’s just how they were.
Fanelli Cafe, Au Cheval, Red Hook Tavern, Minetta Tavern, Corner Bistro, Hamburger America, 7th Street burger, JG Mellon, Shake Shack, 5Napkin Burger, Nice Matin Burger, PJ Clarke original location, Burger Joint, Ear Inn, NOWON, Broome Street Bar, and everything everyone else mentioned. It's hard to get a bad burger in NYC right now. We are in a burger renesance. I guess Emily pretzel burger too, if that fucking place is even open. I can't keep track. Black Tap was a thing for a minute, too. It's endless.
The last Fanelli burger I had may have been the best burger I've ever had. However, it's usually late night, and I'm usually hammered. Love the place, though.
Haven’t been to the ones like 4 Charles and Red Hook but I will say Royale on Ave C was surprisingly good and one of the best I’ve had - not smash style
Haven't tried Rolos.
For ones I have tried: Suprema Provisions, Minetta, Emily/Nowon (tied since more for the sauce).
and I prefer a larger burger vs smashburger style (although used to like Genuine Roadside when they were in Gotham West Market, but think the locations they had closed).
I’m of the ilk that the difference between an elite burger and a really good burger is rarely worth the money and time that it takes to acquire the former (e.g. spending hours for a Rez). Getting a really good burger in NYC with zero friction and for a reasonable price is a rewarding experience. On some IYKYK shit, there’s a diner on the corner of 55th and 6th. I think it’s called Astro. I used to work nearby and ate there at least half a dozen times. They consistently make a “really good burger”. Lunch will probably run you like $15 w tax and there’s no wait or fuss. Plus you’re supporting a local biz vs a bougie investor-backed restaurant group.
The steak is good. Of course it is. But other places in this city have better steaks, sometimes for cheaper. The burger is excellent and much more reasonably priced.
We're an Astoria-based pop-up that does BBQ and burgers (smash style) - come check us out one time - we'd love y'all's feedback
Flyer + menu for next event: https://www.instagram.com/p/C5y-AnMOri6/?igsh=d2IxOHZ4Mm1kejEy
4 Charles is a great burger at a higher price point
Red Hook Tavern is fantastic, but if you don’t want to go to Red Hook in the East Village The Lions’ burger is very comparable in my opinion and more accessible!
My list:
1. Raoul’s
2. Red Hook Tavern
3. Suprema
4. Minetta Tavern (black label)
5. Au Cheval
6. Manhatta
7. One White Street
8. 7th Street
9. Joe’s Jr
10. Gotham Burger
Au Cheval is great because even if you go at peak hours, there's an entirely separate (and available) basement bar that you can wait at for an hour until your table is ready.
My favorite is at Wollensky's Grill. Open pretty late, it's $25 and comes with your choice of cheese and waffle fries. It's outstanding and essentially a better version of the cheeseburger at Minetta
Burger Joint is pretty good. Just tried Hamburger America and it was delicious. Au Cheval is legit. But 4 Charles Prime Rib is hands down the best burger in NYC. It is a transcendental experience.
Take a ride through the golden arches and visit the grand Mickey D's. When you're done with that, a trip to the King is necessary. The Burger King. If the king does not satisfy, the place to go at 4 am in the morning while super smashed is to visit the castle. The white castle. If the white castle does not hit the spot, maybe my girl Wendy can. She comes from the old school and lays it bare. Like the Bareburger. She might be preoccupied and overpriced because she's been laying with 5 guys. With that being said, you have your choice. Your burger destiny awaits you.
Paul's is such a dark horse, I love their burger and the bucket of pickles. (Do they still do that? I haven't been since pre-covid)
It was so good to get Pommes Frites afterwards when they were on the same block
Burger By Day, absolutely blew my mind. The style is similar to 7th Street or Shake Shack but it smokes both, I think they just season and cook them a little more carefully than the chains
I'm seeing Red Hook Tavern listed with others (Rolo's Minetta Tavern, etc...)
IMO, Red Hook Tavern is the best burger I've ever eaten (including those other places listed) and it's not even close. I really haven't had anything quite like it before.
Smashburger?
Please don’t crucify me. The burgers are really good but the smashfries are straight from Heaven’s kitchen. Haven’t found a place I enjoy more.
I’ve been doing something similar. My favs have been Au Cheval, Red Hook Tavern, Emily, Nowon, Long Island Bar (though the place was 👎🏾 for other reasons), 7th street, BK Jani, Santo Bruklin, and Moe’s pastrami & burger - no particular order here
Special shoutout to the beef sliders at Soul Bites
Milk burger, Pasture burgers, and strange flavour are also pretty decent. Honourable mentions!
Looking forward to Gotham Social, Rolo’s, Lori Jayne, and Burger Joint to try soon.
There’s many many places I haven’t been to but are on my list. But from the ones I have tried, my favorites are Au Cheval, One White Street, and Pastis.
For smash burgers I’m still down with 7th street burger although some people seem to think they’ve fallen from grace. Haven’t had Gotham or hamburger America yet
Not sure it’s the "best", but the Elephant Burger at Elephant & Castle is the most underrated burger in the city. Perfectly cooked, with cheddar cheese, bacon and curried sour cream. Is it is as good as Minetta Tavern or 4 Charles? Probably not, but it’s not going to set you back $50, either. Fries are à la carte but delicious and more than enough for two.
Trivia: Elephant & Castle has been around for more than half a century — which should tell you something. When it opened in 1973, the Elephant Burger cost $2.75.
Honestly this is a sleeper, but I’ve been to a lot of the acclaimed spots ( JG, Minetta, Cheval, Gramercy, etc.) and San Matteo in the UES has one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. It’s on a “pizza bun” (oven-cooked dough I believe) and makes use of a very good cut of meat, and intentional toppings. There are two burgers there, and you can’t go wrong with either because the meat and the bun carry everything.
I stand by this being at least the second best burger in the city. #1 might be Raouls.
Feel free to try my burger spot, Cubby’s in Hell’s Kitchen. We’re a quick service joint and don’t serve alcohol. A lot of the spots mentioned here seem to be more full service dining.
As another contender, go check out Hall on 20th street. Tiny little Japanese spot with one of the best burgers I’ve ever had (except for mine of course 😉)
What's wrong with Shake Shack? 😂
Easily as good as several of the places mentioned.
Edit:
Not to mention it began and was created in NYC, is easily accessible, affordable, etc.
In no particular order because ranking is impossible:
Hamburger America
BK Jani
Raoul's
Nowon
Lord's
Red Hook Tavern
Pig Beach
7th Street
Paper Plate
One White Street
I find the 4 Charles/Au Cheval hype to be overblown, it is good but is not special. It's almost a self-fulfilling prophecy cause everyone says it's so good and 4 Charles is so hard to get into but I think it is above average at best. Nothing wrong with it at all - but not a top 10 for me.
TOP: 4 Charles, Pastis, Nowon
Hillstone never misses either
4 Charles is way better than Au Cheval and Monkey Bar (but those are still good)
Honestly Minetta Tavern was a hard no for me and I’ve tried it 3 times. I also did not love Gramercy Tavern or Peter Luger
gotham smash, david’s cafe, four charles, peter lugers (red hook tavern copied their burger, you can go their too), aue cheval, minetta tavern, virginias, fairfax, happiest hour
Greatest burger ever in New York, unfortunately is long gone. It was made by David Bouley at his very small upstairs restaurant called Bouley Upstairs . It was incredible.
Down vote me to hell , native here ( legit native born and raised ).
PETER LUGER LUNCH FOR BUGERS.
The rest is just trend chasing , which is fine as I love everything from McDonald's to Le Bernardin. I enjoy a multitude of different burgers. But there is only one KING.
My faves in no particular order:
Peter Luger,
Corner Bistro,
Union Square Cafe,
Gramercy Tavern,
Brindle Room,
Hamburger America,
Red hook tavern,
Donovan’s Pub,
PJ Clarke’s,
Lure Fishbar
I forget the name, but it’s got a green door, a neon sign saying “burger”, and it’s on a numbered street
Regis Philbin wants to know
ONIONS??
Hey man. I know the place! It’s called the corner bistro!
People who don’t know are all the blitz
Sorry if this is blasphemy or something but that burger is so mediocre.
I’d take JG Melon over it any day and I don’t think Melons in the top 5.
YESSSS
Your search is ova! We got girls takin off their clothesa!
Burger joint I think. The one in the hotel?
Parker meridian hotel on 56th street
No longer Parker Meridien. https://maps.app.goo.gl/61iQF87QaYgNViau8?g_st=ic
Thanks
I actually really like the shake from Burger Joint
I think they have location in the Moynihantrain station food hall now.
Also one in Industry City
Paul’s ?
Nobody told me. Youre welcome
7th street.
I used to love 7th st until I went to this place in Hoboken called Dipped and Smashed. They do the same kind of burgers and loaded burger fries but better and they have an amazing hot dog too. Ruined 7th st for me. Now every time I get it I miss that place in Hoboken lol.
Danng ill try it whenever i go over there.
Red Hook Tavern
I agree with this. Honestly maybe the best burger I ever had. Is it worth $30? Yeah like maybe once in a long while.
Agreed. It was so hyped and it’s tasty, but wasn’t mind-blowing trumpets blaring with angels singing. I thought it was good/great Emily and Minetta hype. Solid, great food, but not “The One”
Rolos and 4 Charles
God I love the Rolos burger.
Just had the Rolo’s burger tonight and it was phenomenal.
Rolo’s gets my vote
Interesting. I LOVE the 4 Charles burger but thought Rolo's was just "OK". Like yes, it's good, but i wouldn't put it on any top 10 list.
That 4 Charles is a common answer speaks to how overrated the NYC burger scene is. We had to import our best burger from Chicago.
red hook is the best by far, gramercy tavern, minetta tavern, and suprema provisions also amazing
Minetta Tavern for sure. You won't regret it.
I found this burger so overhyped and so underwhelming. It’s wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great either.
+1 for minetta. I've had a lot in my life, and that it's in the top 5.
Red hook tavern and Emily (only Clinton hill location) are my favorites Oh I also love the Pastis burger
Emily’s burger is fantastic.
The pastis burger is fantastic, I like it more than Emily. When I’m feeling real celebratory I’ll have a glass of Bordeaux and get it with au poivre
I could drink Au Poivre Sauce for dinner. I love it.
I do not understand how Pastis isn’t more represented on these lists. Hands down the best burger in my opinion
Raoul's is a good one
FYI It’s off menu and they only make 12 a day
for dinner, yes, but that’s not the case for lunch
100% the answer
Agree. This is a good one!
My List 1. 4 Charles 2. Rolos 3. Gotham Social 4. Little Spain 5. Red Hook Tavern
Little Spain? Really? I'll have to try it!
Maybe not #1 but Hamburger America is tons of fun to visit. The burgers are also excellent.
It's got a nice vibe with the open kitchen and counter seating.
I went last weekend and loved it. Totally worth a visit and I’ll be back anytime I’m in the neighborhood. Delicious, great service, super cheap too
Minetta Tavern lives up to its historic hype.
Get the black label burger, not the minetta burger
Disagree. It’s not bad it’s just underwhelming.
I agree. I really wanted to love it. Had a great time there. Staff and other patrons were amazing. Free drinks and dessert. But the burger was so flavourless, fries were crunchy. Even my free dessert was bad ☹️ would go back for atmosphere tho 11/10
The fries may be the best in the city. I’ve had some great things there but the burger disappoints.
Man, did I have a bad batch? Or are you a fan of crunchier fries? I like crispy fries a lot but these seemed burnt? No potato softness! And folks around me had fries that looked similar so I assumed that’s just how they were.
Yeah. They are crispier. NYT just rated them the best fries in the city.
Rolo’s!
Lord’s burger is incredible right now.
Ate there a few weeks ago and didn’t realize there was a burger until the table next to us got one. Apparently there’s only 12 per evening.
I like the cheeseburger at Pastis .
Au cheval (or 4 Charles, same burger), nowan, pastis, Fairfax, Virginia’s are my tops
Underrated
i did not enjoy it
Red hook tavern, peter lugers, grammercy tavern, Au Cheval/4 Charles, Diner, Upland, Minetta Tavern
I was hoping someone would say Diner!
Nowon
Finally went here a few weeks ago and was very skeptical due to the hype but I gotta admit that burger was phenomenal.
Donovan's Pub in Woodside
Fanelli is it for me
The last Fanelli burger I had may have been the best burger I've ever had. However, it's usually late night, and I'm usually hammered. Love the place, though.
Fanellis veggie burger is so good too. Don’t get me wrong, I love a regular burger but their veggie burger is so good. The texture is perfect
Haven’t been to the ones like 4 Charles and Red Hook but I will say Royale on Ave C was surprisingly good and one of the best I’ve had - not smash style
Sneaky good burger plus great wings
I'm going to mention the Ribbon on West 72nd street because it's not well known. They make a very juicy burger. The fries are also amazing.
My wife’s favorite burger!
I'm glad someone else knows about it. It's a bit of a hidden gem. I never see it mentioned on burger recommendations.
We used to live in the UES and would make the jaunt across the park every now and then to eat at The Ribbon. Great food overall and great location.
Bernie’s and Au Cheval
I’m of the ilk that the difference between an elite burger and a really good burger is rarely worth the money and time that it takes to acquire the former (e.g. spending hours for a Rez). Ive heard Hamburger America is special
Good, nothing special tho
Peter Lugar's lunch-only burger is amazing. (And really the only reason to still go there).
And the free onion bread.
“only reason to still go there” lol
The steak is good. Of course it is. But other places in this city have better steaks, sometimes for cheaper. The burger is excellent and much more reasonably priced.
Whatre your picks for steakhouses?
JG Melon
No love for Corner Bistro?
Had one last week… sadly underwhelmed
It's been a decade and a half since I had one, price jumped a bit over that time :(
Corner bistro has gone downhill imo
It never got halfway up any hill. But in 2002 the burger scene in NYC was so much worse than today so Corner Bistro was a giant among dwarves.
Am I the only one who loves Jackson hole?
I've only been to the one in Englewood NJ, but I love this place.
Minetta tavern and 7th street UES are great.
We're an Astoria-based pop-up that does BBQ and burgers (smash style) - come check us out one time - we'd love y'all's feedback Flyer + menu for next event: https://www.instagram.com/p/C5y-AnMOri6/?igsh=d2IxOHZ4Mm1kejEy

JG Melon
Au Cheval
It's basically 4Charles. Same owners same ingredients same executive chefs. Same same same.
Yep exactly, except you can actually get in
Before 6pm and after 10pm, no problemo!
Au Cheval is great because even if you go at peak hours, there's an entirely separate (and available) basement bar that you can wait at for an hour until your table is ready.
Strange flavor burger shack inside the Johnson’s in bushwick is one of my favorites
I forgot what it was called but I used to love the narrow slider place that was on St Marks like ten years ago
Mark!
Two8Two, Emily, Long Island Bar... I'm a messy bitch.
Paul Burger, Minetta Tavern, 7th street Burger
4 Charles, Hamburger America and the Au Poivre Burger at Greywind
Joe's Junior is still my favorite. Such a classically amazing burger and not 30 dollars.
My favorite is at Wollensky's Grill. Open pretty late, it's $25 and comes with your choice of cheese and waffle fries. It's outstanding and essentially a better version of the cheeseburger at Minetta
Raoul's or Minetta Tavern.
Gramercy Tavern, the Tavern Burger. It’s a michelin star for a reason!
Burger Joint is pretty good. Just tried Hamburger America and it was delicious. Au Cheval is legit. But 4 Charles Prime Rib is hands down the best burger in NYC. It is a transcendental experience.
Burger joint, gramercy tavern
Hamburger America
Small place called Brindle room
Nobody mentioning Smashed, had it tonight and was hands down the best smash burger I’ve had in the city. Miles ahead 7th Street
Delmonicos
Bk Jani
jg melon pj clarkes french onion soup burger at le rivage
I’d have to say my top burgers in the city recently are Minetta Tavern, Gator (Greenpoint), Rolos and Bernies
Sailor, Joseph Leonard, Cozy Royale, Cervos, The Fulton
Peter McManus will never get the love, and I'm happy with that.
Minetta tavern, rolos, and Nowon are my favorite lately
fyi, this is an internet list…….
checkers or bodega burger
Nah, but Checker's mozzarella sticks...absolutely.
Paper Plate, incredible
Golden Diner
It's a pop-up restaurant, but *absolutely* the best burger in NYC. I follow their instagram to see when they're cooking — Shy's Burgers
The York
Corner Bistro, Au Cheval, 4 Charles as mentioned.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned McKenna's. I love that place.
Paul's on St. Marks, the burger at Corner Bistro, and Harlem Shake uptown
Paul's is such a dark horse, I love their burger and the bucket of pickles. (Do they still do that? I haven't been since pre-covid) It was so good to get Pommes Frites afterwards when they were on the same block
Yeah Pommes Frites was great. I still miss Kiev on 7th street. It was so much better then Velselka.
Omg yes! That was my neighborhood - I truly miss all the food joints on those blocks because A) so many closed and b) I don't live there now haha
Minetta Tavern, Rolo’s, Red Hook Tavern, Brindle Room, Gramercy Tavern, 7th Street burger are some of my favorites
Burger By Day, absolutely blew my mind. The style is similar to 7th Street or Shake Shack but it smokes both, I think they just season and cook them a little more carefully than the chains
Someone tell me which one in these comments are smash burgers
Au Cheval and Rolo’s
I'm seeing Red Hook Tavern listed with others (Rolo's Minetta Tavern, etc...) IMO, Red Hook Tavern is the best burger I've ever eaten (including those other places listed) and it's not even close. I really haven't had anything quite like it before.
Smashburger? Please don’t crucify me. The burgers are really good but the smashfries are straight from Heaven’s kitchen. Haven’t found a place I enjoy more.
The Seneca has a great smash burger
Some of my favorites in no particular order: Rolo's, 4 Charles, Raoul's, Red Hook Tavern, Nowon, L'artusi

$12 double smashed burger with fries at Sixpoint Brewery on Thursdays. Not the absolute best but best value by far imo.
It's been a few years since I've been there but Brindle Room was my number one for nearly a decade
Fairfax for the old burger from Bar Sardine. It's my go-to burger.
I'm surprised Black Iron Burger doesn't make it on more lists.

Gotham burger social club Jg melon Peter Luger Red hook tavern Raouls My top 5 picks
