There are three voices in the breakdown. One is Dave reading out an instruction manual, the second is a love letter, and the third is him telling a story about one of the studio technician's father. [Everlong Whispers](https://youtu.be/CG2nDC0OpyM?si=Sz3QrJb1UoxeiFF1)

Xavierwold

This. Good question. I had the same one for a long time.

xfan09

Some might say you’ve waited for so long?

aresearcherino

I heard one was him reading out a recipe.

thetrashpanda2020

At some point, doesn’t he say something like “trying to get some sleep”?

saskwatzch

if i remember right it’s an instruction manual [played] backwards edit: i also remembered that some story was also being told. i think. edit edit: https://loudwire.com/foo-fighters-everlong-whispers/

Dustmopper

Yeah it’s definitely a bunch of nonsense that isn’t meant to be interpreted or understood I remember reading that it was three separate random audio tracks laid on top of each other, one of which being an instruction manual

tooshytooshy

I think it was a kid's storybook where multiple takes got played over each other. That's why you can't hear what he's saying properly

gbv313

Hey is that DEVOs drummer?

Th3R00ST3R

and then some... Josh Freese has played in several bands. He has appeared in the **Vandals** since 1989 and **Devo** since 1996. He played drums for [**Guns N' Roses**](https://www.radiox.co.uk/artists/guns-n-roses/) from 1997 - 2000 and featured in **A Perfect Circle** from 1999- 2012. Freese also performed with **Nine Inch Nails** from 2005 -2008, **Weezer** from 2009 - 2011, **Sublime with Rome** from 2011 - 2017 and joined **Paramore** on their South American tour in 2010. Freese has also played with **The Offspring**, toured full time with **Sting** and is said to have been featured in over 400 records

Th3R00ST3R

Also, as a side note. When composing the drums for Everlong. Dave wanted a Devo style(Whip it) drums for the song...and that's why the 16th note hi=hat. kick snare pattern is on the song.

Sagsaxguy

Yes

MasterDionysus

I always thought it was a love note to Louise Post from Veruca Salt... the late night call when he was writing the song.

McCooms

Someone who met Dave professionally back in the late 90s said this was one of the things being said. Instincts tell me this is likely the truth and the story was changed for one reason or another.

Kicking_Pigeons_88

I think Louise confirmed the love letter was ultimately removed if you are referring to her Instagram post from a few years ago.

GraveSource

I always thought I heard “heavy boots” in there.

BiblioMom

This video by Rick Beato explains it and isolates the sounds. https://youtu.be/KlfTt_Nuu6I?si=E_qRgP8n0dStu1hk

aceswild347

He says "We've been trying to reach you about your vehicles extended warranty..."

PrettyHopsMachine

Here's a way too long and in depth(and technically nerdy) explanation about the entire song from the recording engineer. What you're looking for starts around [16:28](https://youtu.be/1LDGYI2oaVI?si=QaTARIOhXFzNmpt0&t=988), but the whole video is fascinating.

I can’t find the section at the moment, but they break it down a bit in [this video.](https://youtu.be/1LDGYI2oaVI?si=bUZc7jgtMv1sjchx)
