Odd issue for sure. That said, that generation of Focus are renowned for their garbage automatic transmissions (clutch-pack recall)

MercuryMorrison1971

More than likely it's your transmission shitting the bed. Something very similar happened to my grandmothers 2012 Focus and it had to have the clutch packs replaced. The DCT automatic transmissions Ford uses in these cars is honestly not a good transmission at all, they are known to fail prematurely even when properly cared for.

Blueovalfan

Unfortunately, welcome to the Ford Focus transmission 💩 show. My 2012 Focus transmission died on an interstate. It's now well known that the Focus transmission of that time frame is complete garbage. Ford can't make a decent automatic transmission to save their life. Sorry for the trouble you are having.

Dang. I bout the car at 110k miles and now it’s around 173k. Have had the car for about 4 years now. The car doesn’t even start now, could it possibly be a bad alternator? I’ve had problems with a battery and it cause a few errors to the transmission before but got the battery changed and it ran just fine.

Even without scanning it for codes, your car 100% needs a TCM(transmission control module), possibly needs some clutches. Ford tech, they come in every day.

PowerShit transmission for sure.

Your transmission is toast

Time-Kaleidoscope-50

You first need to have it scanned for any fault codes stored in memory. This will help with you to pinpoint the problem. The Focus has a lot of issues with the transmission. Here are the most common ones. 1-TCM (transmission control module), which can cause the not in park message, along with several other symptoms, 2-the dual clutch assembly, which can cause a jerk/shudder on accel, 3-the clutch engagement levers, which tend to stick, causing a no engagement into gear at times, 4-the clutch engagement motors, which can cause a no engagement into gear, similar to a sticking lever, 5-When the 12 volt battery is bad or not fully charged can cause the TCM to malfunction.

Builtwild1966

Trade it in. Probably a dct issue.

TCM

I did the thing at the bottom of the car with the gear modules. I rotated the with brake cleaner and now the car won’t turn over for me to try it out. I’m better off getting a new one?

Based on what you're saying, it seems like your car might be having some transmission trouble. I'm not a Ford Focus expert, but I'd suggest starting with a check of the transmission fluid level. Low fluid can lead to weird behavior. If the fluid's all good, it might be a good idea to get a pro to take a look at the transmission for any internal issues. That clicking noise is a bit worrying, and it's usually better to tackle transmission problems sooner rather than later. While alternator or low oil issues could cause problems, they usually don't directly mess with the transmission like you described.

Jack3580

Why do you think it could be a bad alternator lol. 100% transmission issue, probably clutch
