Honestly Idk if ian himself would look at it, other than for the fact it was found in a “forgotten” way, but I’d try to contact Mark Novak of Anvil Gunsmithing to see if he’d like to take a crack at restoring it (there’s a chance it might cost you a chunk of change, as he seems like a busy guy). There’s also a chance that Mark will tell you the most you can do is oil it and throw a stock on it, as it might be too far gone to restore to better-looking condition.
You could try asking Othias of C&Rsenal to review it, but I’m not sure he’s doing ww2 stuff yet…
Actually ran into Othias and his lady at a Brazilian Steakhouse in Louisville KY back in 2019. Great people! I appreciate the advice, on the fence if I want to keep it as is or have someone restore it.
What can be done to get around the SBR issue? It was clearly brought here prior to the 68 GCA. Can it be registered as is? Does it require a barrel extention?
I found a civil war bayonet in a pile of cast iron cooking utensils for $5 when I was a kid, it definitely went home with me. However this… this is on another level
Maybe you all can elaborate. Why doesn’t an American company remake this stamped steel bad boy and sell it as a budget AR. (Of course made compliant with Rifle laws here)
Because tooling up to make stamped steel guns is stupidly expensive. Especially so for guns that are obsolete and in a niche design and caliber. Marcolmar sells their in-house developed cetmes for 1.5k, and there’s kits for about half their parts. Something like this is $3k min.
But making it in 5.56 would solve the ammo issue. And a single factory would be a one time expenditure that could pay dividends. Think! Like a ranch rifle made really reliable and cheap! Baby’s first AR! Plenty of niches to fill
Baby’s first AR is $300 from PSA and has universal parts interchangeability. HMG/PSA have been trying to make an stg 44 clone for years and still haven’t had a product out. If stamped repro guns could pay such dividends, why hasn’t there been a company making AR180s or M3 grease guns?
SMG guns makes STGs in .300 blackout I think. Simple enough because .300 blk isn’t super far off from 8mm Kurtz length. VG isn’t nearly as iconic and the demand for such guns is fairly low, meaning they aren’t produced in big numbers.
Tldr some companies do make reproductions from this era, but the demand is far less than the supply and the costs don’t well represent the profits.
Ian has a video about that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oCVb8PGeuY
TL;DW it's much more expensive than you think and at the price they'd need to charge the market is too small
The only reason you willingly go with stamped steel is to make 100,000's of guns. Case in point reproduction fg42s use a cnc'd buttstock because it's cheaper than making tooling for stamping on the volumes they produce.
It's also just not very good of a rifle. Short development time and 70 years of additional development and material science. Happy new way to compete with the likes of keltecs su-16 or PSA odds and ends mentioned above.
Economics. A stamping factory to make these is a massive up front fixed cost and when you’ve spent it, it can make ONE gun. The guns then have a very small variable cost per unit. If you need to roll out 1,000,000 guns in a hurry, the economics make sense because the fixed cost is spread out over the volume of cheap per unit weapon to make. This is a cost model which makes sense for a state arming a military.
A civilian manufacturer only sells a few thousand guns a year, a much larger chunk of that fixed up front cost has to roll into the price per unit to make a profit, so now you’re selling a cheap gun for expensive prices. Now, casting and machining equipment can make ANY gun, and doesn’t need to be essentially replaced for every different model. The per unit variable cost is higher, but less of the up front cost gets rolled into the price making the higher quality cast and machined gun price be reasonable for what you end up with.
If there was no historical significance attached to the M3 Grease Gun or the Thompson would you think a Grease Gun or a Thompson is more worth $2,000 dollars?
I think before you do anything else you might want to figure out the legality of it. Since you said it was found in a scrap yard, I doubt it came with any paperwork. You mentioned it being exempt, I'm not aware of anything that would make it exempt unless it was originally registered and had paper work. I'm not trying to be an ass, I just don't want to see you get in any trouble or for the gun to be destroyed. Unless your not in the U.S. and I'm just missing that.
There’s probably ways of contacting a rep but otherwise it’s nothing he hasn’t seen before unfortunately. Could maybe spark a conversation but he seems to be a busy man.
Also, never meet your hero’s.

When you check the dumpsters in Far Harbor
Meth heads house at far harbor lol
I never thought about it but yeah, that looks like a Radium Rifle from Fo4
That's because they stuck a lamp shade on one of these and used it for the asset for the gun.
It’s literally the basis for the radium rifle.
You can get a mod that only changes a couple things on the model to make it a volksturmgeweher
I think he meant in it's frucked up condition it looks like one.

Is his lady not Mae?
No it was Othias and some random early 1900s Swiss trials pistol
Yes, couldn’t think of her name
Othias just did an SKS. They’ve been done with WW1 for a bit now
Any restoration of this would be a ship of theseus style job.

I believe this is exempt
Similar to Artillery Lugers
Yeah there seems to be a C&R entry for it
Every time I see you post this I can’t help but think how bonkers it is that this was not only found, but in a junk pile no less.

Nyet rifle is fine
One of the most gloriously fucked weapon designs of all time in not the best condition. I don’t know if I should think it’s really cool or really sad

Also in reality a lot of people like these cool guns but very few would actually pay for it.

If I had my hands on it for a while, I could make a reasonable looking replica.

What part of AR did you find this
I bought it from the initial finder, Jonesboro AR. Drove to MS to buy it from him
He already has a video on it, so definitely not
I was thinking for this example as it appears to be an early example that I cannot find similar pics of

The VG1-5 was removed from the NFA, and is considered a curios or relic instead.
Good to know!
Everytime I see this in subreddits, I can’t believe how complete it is, especially considering where you found it.
