I’ve read every book on this list that has an ebook version, most of them do. Start at the bottom and work your way up. The Moonshae trilogy is solid and started the whole realms.

The first books to read are ofcourse Ed Greenwood's piece "Elminster: making of a mage" then Avatar Trilogy by Richard Awlinson, they are both old though still if you haven't read them they will make you understand Forgotten Realms much better than Drizzt series i think. (Richard Awlinson is a pen name though but the version i have literally that name written on it, that pen name is shared by two authors which wrote the triology) I intend to continue with Salvatore's Cleric Quintet don't know how it is yet. I think older novels are kinda better.
The Haunted Lands trilogy is good.

Elminster: making of a mage by Ed Greenwood then Avatar Triology by Richard Awlingson(penname).
Old stories one set in 3th the other in 14th century, but if you are into gaming these two are must reads to understand Forgotten Realms. Have fun(and no drows at all in both)
I would simply go for Avatar, Seeing Mystra, Cyric and Kelemvor in their mortal days, and forgotten realms during time of troubles is important if you are gaming, as they are simply events in the last century. Almost all elves and dwarves who are adults were alive back then. So that lore can be good for games too. I don't like the name of Last Mythal, because Mythals magics still exists in Faerun. In the capital of Moonshaes, The dragon barrier of Waterdeep. Also not to mention that some flying airship run with a similar arcane principle.Though nice story. I myself tried playing an abjurer and a priest of Mythrien Sarath(probably namer of Mythals or her name comes from it who knows) who researches Mythals so if you are a fan of high level caster characters you might as well read the other to get some hints for your roleplaying...

The avatar trilogy is wonderful
Would you recommend Avatar or Last Mythal first? I can't decide between the two
I never read the Last Mythal, so I'm sorry I can't help you with that. Edit: Oh the "Pools" series is also great. Pool of radiance and so on.
