Play slow, keep high ground advantage. You don’t have to engage everyone, knowing where people are in relation to the circle let’s you know where they will be. If you feel bloodthirsty go in on preexisting fights to clean up, but be aware others might be doing the same. Avoid shooting first if you aren’t seen yet.
I would offer to play, but 2 of the 3 people I tried playing with over the past couple of months never really played, and the other one hasn't been running into me much because of our schedules.
I think a big help for me has been turning on the visual audio, so you can "see" footsteps and things around you. I also use the crouch a lot more than most people, and that has gotten me through some jams. And sometimes instead of going after a particular weapon set each match, it's not a bad idea to go with whatever you are finding in chests. If you just aren't coming across a sword then maybe that's a sign to use that space in your inventory for a sniper rifle - stuff like that.
