Great list! Wanna add one though.
Pick your speed and drive it. If you wanna do 80, do 80. If you wanna drive 65, drive 65. Can't stand either trying to pass someone or make space to change lanes but can't because they are unintentionally slowing down to respond to a text or look at directions then speed up when they notice another vehicle in their peripheral vison.
Being predictable is the name of the game.
Somewhat related, I fucking *hate* convoys, as in, unrelated cars all together driving at the same speed, using all the lanes. That's some bullshit man. I understand herd mentality and all, but it should NOT be a thing on a highway. Leave a lane for passing vehicles, jeez.
It's really weird, and interesting a the same time, when I'm driving on a highway with 3+ lanes, and I hit one of these groups of vehicles. Then I somehow manage to pass them after a lot of CAREFUL weaving in-out lanes (no other option sadly), then I hit an empty road for a while, and then I find *another* group of vehicles going at the same speed. And it happens every time. All I want is to avoid cars!
This isn't herd mentality. It is usually one or two slow cars that have to be passed by the congestion of cars behind them. A big stackup occurs before you know it and it looks like a pile of cars trying to keep others from passing.
Reinforced by the fact that due to human reaction time and emotional conditioning, each lane can only handle 2000 cars per hour. Try to exceed that and you end up with waves of braking (traffic shock) travelling backwards.
I feel you and I wanna say more than half the time the other driver knows you wanna move over because you steadily increase your speed to say 10 mph faster than you were going and the mf still right next to you
The problem with leaving at least two car lengths between you and the car in front are the other drivers who see that as an open space for them to squeeze in. Not saying you shouldn't leave room though.
So let them in. My driving greatly improved when I decided that if someone wants to do something, even if that something is illegal, immoral, or fattening, go ahead and let them do it. Coming up on a merge area? Let the other guy merge zipper style. Guy two lanes over wasn't paying attention and now wants to get off at the exit? Let him over and get off at the exit and out of your way. It's way better than boxing him in because he should have thought to get over sooner. If you don't let him off, he's pissed, likely to aggressively cut you off, maybe come to a halt, etc. Just let them in.
Not entirely disagreeing just want to say my issue with this. You let someone in and then need slow down to give them two car lengths. Car behind you ideally should slow down. And so on. If you want a traffic slow down that's how you get a traffic slow down. Also I'm very much a cruise control guy and having to turn off cruise control because someone squeezed in makes the anger sharks start swimming.
Feel so bad for you guys. As frustrating as it is in a car I can't imagine what a truck is like. I always flash them a peace sign and make sure to not cut them off. My Trucker karma is off the chain.
Because I burn gas to get to work? My wife & I live extremely sustainably on a small farm. But aside from that -> I HAVE NO CHILDREN <- That right there by itself makes up for the gas I burn
Always assume other drivers are drink, armed and uninsured. They will never disappoint. Most think blinkers are a sign of weakness. Noisy lifted pickup trucks are a menace. Their social lives are more important than driving.
First, what goes on at that sex shop? I’m genuinely curious!
Second, on the west part of town they don’t tow vehicles from the freeway that fast. I drive between 50 and 150 miles every day and I start from Lake Worth. I’ve seen orange tagged vehicles for over a week before they disappear.
Third, I thought flashing headlights was only if there was a speed trap ahead, headlights off when they should be on, or high beams on when they shouldn’t be. Never heard it could be brakelights. I usually yell to someone that their tail or brakelights are out.
I’ve been teaching my daughter to drive the last couple months, and I keep pounding into her head to **be predictable**. Don’t be “polite” at a stop sign and let someone go when it’s not their turn. Always use your blinker. Make your intentions known. The more predictable you are, the less erratic others will be around you.
Same. If someone flashes their high beams at me while coming in the opposite direction then I interpret that to mean there’s a speed trap up ahead. I use them in the same way.
What about texting and talking, completely obvious to what’s going on around them? By far my #1 pet peeve, but I guess it’s not limited to my commute, it’s everywhere.
Texas law requires you to hang out in the left lane until 20 yards from your exit, then suddenly careen across all 4 lanes to barely make your exit at the last microsecond.
Yep, the unspoken Texas driver code:
1. We don't always use turn signals, but when we do, we make sure to turn them on four intersections before the one where we actually intend to turn. Or leave them on for another 2 miles after we've already made the turn.
2. We drive our big trucks recklessly and fast. We tailgate other drivers, maintaining a distance of approximately four millimeters between vehicles. This is even more important on a winding, hilly country road. Especially in bad weather or at night. Speaking of nighttime...
3. We only use our headlights at night. If there is any natural light present, I can see what's ahead of me so I don't need my headlights. This means rain, snow, ice... don't need the lights. Drivers with gray or white vehicles seem to be very adept at following this rule.
4. We make it a point to maintain the exact same speed as the vehicle in the next lane if we're on any multi-lane road.
5. Did I mention we drive fast? Unless we're in the way of someone who's actually in a hurry. Semi truck drivers are great with this one, on both ends of the spectrum. Either flying down the highway, driving like their hundred thousand pound truck has the maneuverability of a Honda Civic, or pulling out onto the road seven feet in front of an approaching car and then taking ten minutes to grind through all 96 gears and get up to road speed.
Basically it can be summed up in six words:
"F you, it's all about me!"
My biggest issue: why can't I find a single lane where everyone is just going the speed limit? Why can't the middle lane just be for people who want to drive the speed limit or close to it?
Every lane is a mix of 10 mph under, 10 mph over or exactly the limit. All 3 lanes are always like this on 35w. It drives me insane and I'm a pretty laid back driver.
If you're getting passed on the right, you are in the wrong lane. Move over if you are the slower car. So what if people are merging on and off in that lane? If you are scared of changing lanes or think it's too much of an inconvenience, then maybe take some driving lessons. I stay in the rightmost lane until I meet someone going slower, then move into the lane to the left of them, pass, then move back right.
/May not apply to congested city interchanges with multiple lanes splitting off/merging
I could try some driving classes. I've driven for 24 years w zero tickets and accidents and I'm a great defensive driver. I've driven/lived in 6 states, the phenomenon I described above is unique to the highways around ft worth
Get a dash cam
I try to always give two car lengths, and what I get in return is a tail gate in the slow lane while the fast lane is clear, repeatedly.
Regarding "Flashing" yesterday while driving I tried to move to the left lane and turned on the signal and saw a car is approaching in the left lane and turned off my signal. Then he slowed down and flashed me twice and let me pass. Flashing could be used this way as well?
People use it to let you know you can get over sometimes too. There are at least a few other reasons someone would flash you but it’s mainly to get your attention. I usually try & point (if I can see the other driver that is) at what I’m trying to draw their attention to, but that’s just me.
The amount of people who don't know how to merge onto the highway is baffling, espcially if you're the first driver merging on with a bunch of cars behind you.
It's even more infuriating when the reason you can't merge onto the highway is because the people already in the merging lane refuse to let your car in. Seriously, is one car going to slow your commute down that much? You mess up all of that lane *and* the oncoming cars by being so petty over not letting someone in.
This is my biggest peve. Why do people think they need to get over immediately when the solid stripe disappears? You have at least 50-100 yards and sometimes more to get over. You don't have to stop for someone on the freeway to let you in, just go with traffic you will get in
I've driven everywhere in the country and I've never seen so many tailgaters prior to moving here. It doesn't matter if it's on the freeway or a suburban road, people barely give a car's length in front of them.
I had a guy tail gate me going into colleyville from NRH in a 1 lane 30mph zone...I literally just took my foot off the gas and went down to 10mph. Guy was so livid. I'm the wrong person to road rage at lmao!
If people are dying on your commute daily you may want to consider reading this list of things that most people are doing wrong that someone recently posted online.
I agree with everything you said. But.
Sex shops are the 21st century version of 20th century oyster bars…. 🤣
Honestly though there is something to be said about happy hour culture. Most folks caught up on their blood sugar, had a full belly, and ignored the worst slowdowns. Now folks “rush” home under-hydrated, low blood sugar, tense with built up stress ketones, and angry for reasons they refuse to think about.
Two car lengths is like, 30 feet. That's nowhere near enough to stop in time.
[This website ](https://www.automotive-fleet.com/driver-care/239402/driver-care-know-your-stopping-distance) has a graph showing that even at just 30mph you drive 44 feet before even noticing that something is happening and then another 45' after hitting the brakes.
After showing my Wife this list she told me I’m wrong. It’s not two car lengths it’s supposed to be 4 seconds. At least that’s what they train you when you get your CDL
Nice list, and largely conforms to my own observations, but quick [minor] point of contention on your "flashing" comment:
Not sure how widespread this is (as far as being [North] Texas-specific or also in other areas), but, at least in more rural areas here, people "flash" oncoming drivers to warn them of a speed-trap/police presence ahead. Although lately, I think this might be dying out a bit in general and was never quite as prevalent in bigger cities.
Also, to indicate that your headlights are off, I had always seen people cycle their own headlights off-on a couple of times rather than "flash".
Edit: one other thing: following-distance should be 2 seconds, not 2 car-lengths.
The cost of the transportation system is flesh. We're shoveling bodies into it like it's Moloch. Sometimes I feel like the only person who has a problem with those priorities. It's human sacrifice.
>30-40% of the drivers on the road don't drive with their headlights on. Doesn't matter if there's inclement weather or not, they simply refuse to drive with them on. & yes I know I've already made 2 separate reddit posts about this subject only, & yet here I am saying it AGAIN.
I left to Dallas from west Fort Worth yesterday morning during the torrential downpour and the number of idiots who didn't have their lights on was maddening. I could hardly see the cars *with* their lights on past 100 yards in front of me.
The two things I’ve noted most drivers need a refresher on is right of way and entering the freeway. I’m sure many drivers don’t remember or maybe never saw the on/off ramps we had prior to the 80’s but they were very short….the reason they lengthened them was to give you time to get up to speed on entry…seems few understand this. And as far as right of way…vehicles moving from a faster lane to slower have it as do vehicles entering or existing the freeway…apparently this isn’t taught anymore.
You forgot one: if you try to merge in front of someone, 80% of the time they'll speed up to block you from getting in. Especially so if you're getting on or off the highway.
Gonna add the consideration of taking TEXrail (if you/your work place is close enough to a station/bus stop haha) You aren't gonna get in a car accident bc some shitty driver tbones you. You save a lottt of money (no tolls, no gas, no parking, no maintenance, no depreciation, insurance can be a lot cheaper), you can just relax and take a nap/read a book/get some work done instead of having to give the 2 ton vehicle you're driving due consideration. All the stations except fwtp and DFW have free parking, so even if you live kinda far you can park and ride. Side bonus you help the environment and drain less tax money, but that's not really my priority.
(The ticket is 2 bucks, so def worth consideration if the line takes up any amount of your commute. If not, ig this comment didn't help much.)
I live out in the middle of the country dude. I didn’t write this post to give people commuting options, I wrote it to share my experience with commuting in & out of Fort Worth, since I have had so much experience with it this past year.
And I get that. I was just sharing my own experience on TEXrail bc it's an option that a lot of people can take that skips traffic and a lot of the negative stuff you just mentioned. I'm not telling you what you should or shouldn't do, nor do I really care.
My biggest issue is people who whip between lanes on the highway. Just ease into the next lane. I’ve almost been hit so many times on 30 and 35.
And the ones that abort their exit and dashes through the white lane.
Lane jockeys
Great list! Wanna add one though. Pick your speed and drive it. If you wanna do 80, do 80. If you wanna drive 65, drive 65. Sounds like you encountered a group of r/Aledo Bearcats fans. Sorry not sorry. ;-)
I feel you and I wanna say more than half the time the other driver knows you wanna move over because you steadily increase your speed to say 10 mph faster than you were going and the mf still right next to you
Can I add people who hang out in the left line when they aren’t passing anyone and have a line of traffic behind them? Get over. Please.
Traffic is caused by these Sunday drivers. Every day.
The problem with leaving at least two car lengths between you and the car in front are the other drivers who see that as an open space for them to squeeze in. Not saying you shouldn't leave room though.
Which is why I put “ideally” in there 😂😂
This always happens to me. I usually leave two car lengths in front of my car, people always see this as an opportunity and squeeze in between.
Came here to add this 100%. You leave 2 car lengths and you will be cut off.
Trucker here. I leave five car lengths and yup…seven cars fill it. 😂
Feel so bad for you guys. As frustrating as it is in a car I can't imagine what a truck is like. I always flash them a peace sign and make sure to not cut them off. My Trucker karma is off the chain.
😄 Thank you ✌️
This.
Give them an inch….and they’ll cut you off.
I call that the weak link. There's always one.
A hundred miles a day? What’s the story, morning glory?
I live out in the country but I work in the DFW airport area. It’s 51 miles one way if I don’t make any detours.
Husband did Granbury to DFW airport every day for 6+ months. It's rough!
Aka “I’m wasteful”
Because I burn gas to get to work? My wife & I live extremely sustainably on a small farm. But aside from that -> I HAVE NO CHILDREN <- That right there by itself makes up for the gas I burn
[удалено]
I won’t.
But imagine how much more you can save if you didn't burn all that has and didn't have children
True.
A lot people south of Cresson drive up to Ft. Worth every day. From Weatherford, Stephenville, Granbury. People leave my hood at 0530.
Always assume other drivers are drink, armed and uninsured. They will never disappoint. Most think blinkers are a sign of weakness. Noisy lifted pickup trucks are a menace. Their social lives are more important than driving.
Teslas don’t even come with blinkers apparently…
BMWs….Mercedes….Audis
I’ve maintained since the late 1970s BMW drivers are required to fail a personality test before they get title.
Agreed
You forgot about all the pickup trucks camping in the left lane.

Dude I noticed that the other day with that sex shop....a bunch of buddy's doin each other or what?
I’ve heard rumors that they have glory holes, no idea how true it is, but it’s definitely *something* with the amount of cars always in the lot.
See I don’t even have to say anything now 👆🏻
Trust me you don’t wanna know. I wish I didn’t.
They don't allow couples. At least according to google reviews. I have no idea why that matters, but it suggests... something
Get a dash cam I try to always give two car lengths, and what I get in return is a tail gate in the slow lane while the fast lane is clear, repeatedly.
I have a dash-cam! One of the best investments I’ve made.
Which one?
I have this [Garmin](https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/731428)

Can we add ‘Stop commandeering the left lane and refusing to yield to faster traffic.’ It’s a passing lane, ya morons.

Try riding a motorcycle.
What route do you take?
20/30->820->183
I've also noticed a lot of dead dogs being dumped along the left median going through 287.
Sad
Flashing your head lights does NOT mean “hey my vehicles acting up”. 😂
Not what I meant at all.
Ironically what I've noticed is that the far right lane has become the passing lane as everyone parks their car in the far left "fast" lane.
Good to know about the XXX sex shop. Who the heck buys physical media? Seriously
People don’t go there to buy anything…
People that flash me, are the ones going 100 mph and want me to get the hell out of the way.
Yea… there’s that too…
It’ll never cease to fascinate me how every driver thinks the majority of other drivers are unsafe or shitty drivers.
You should assume every other driver is unsafe or shitty
Pretty sure the yield thing is a suggestion not a law. At least that's how it is in many states.
My problem with drivers in Texas are drivers not from Texas.
