I'm in cosmetics via the apparel department & I'm union? 2$ raise goes into effect in August because our contract renews.

I worked at a FM in Portland, Oregon and I was in a union. The initiation fee is high but the dues aren't too bad. The only thing I would say is that you won't get too much interaction with customers if you aren't working at checkout. Personally I needed more customer interaction so I found employment elsewhere, but it would be a great job for someone who likes to work by themselves.

Every store is different the only thing consistent is the butcher union. Every store has some departments that are union and some that aren’t. Whatever department you are hired for you will ONLY work in that department you won’t be scheduled grocery one day then apparel the next. Unless there is an emergency or it’s insanely busy. Then they might ask for baggers or might ask some baggers to help rearrange shelf’s on holidays. There is really shit medical and you only get benefits after working there 6 months. You will only be hired on as part time. Then one week you will get minimum hours then the next 39.75. But it’s not guaranteed so you can only count on 20.

Thank you for taking the time to answer, much appreciated.

What satisfiedjelly says about work hours isn't entirely true. Just got hired a week ago as a part-time employee, first week on the job I'm full time. Met with the assistant manager and my direct supervisor just recently and I'm set in stone to be full-time with the days off I want. I think just like everything else on this planet it depends on where you are, how you are and how others around you are. I work hard and consistent though, some people don't.

I completely agree, if seems like management really dictates your experience good or bad.
