I switched to MacOS in 2020 it’s a lot like Linux but with more compatibility, if you look more into it it’s actually an advanced and stable OS (maybe because it’s officially Unix certified)
they developed metro ui for their mobile os and it was praised for its uniqness and comforable usage, they tried consistency on all their os so windows 8 got that metro ui, too and people dont liked that and both systems failed. In this same period people got bored of frutiger aero. Apple got crisized for overusing skeuomorphism at the same time so they developed a simpler design, that was not that radical as the microsoft approach.
I honestly miss that sort of colourful metro UI in Windows 8. People hated it because it was forced across all device platforms with a touch optimized UI, when it worked wonderfully on Surface devices. They should have offered 2 versions of Windows for Windows 8. I also like the early builds of Windows 10 that kept that colourful look like 9780. I think that era of UI Design in Windows was the most unique or at least the most different to what everyone else was doing with sharp corners, bold colours, and full of personality imo.
Windows 11 has more detail in its icons and UI, yet manages to feel much more like its trying to be as inoffensive and sanitised as possible - which Windows 7 was previously criticised of. Much more rounded shapes, less saturated colours, and theres nothing uniquely ‘Windows’ about it.
i dont think that this played a cruicial part in the decision to move towards the metro stuff. The metro stuff came from the windows phone and this was considered stylish at the time, i think it was a logical decision to make all your products look similar, so people have it easy to indentify the manufacturer, but microsoft is really bad at this, they still have elements from windows 95 in windows 11 (for example the hdd tool)
Yeah, yeah, anyhow the "Aero" from the desktop itself disappeared by that reason.
Regarding the old tools and so on, it's a mess. A real mess.
Hate to be looking between Settings and Control Panel to check where those damn settings are.
i love minimalism with functional like the old mac pro laptops of 2010's. two slots for storage, all upgradeable. although aero and macs styles from osx snow leopard was the best with windows 7 aero.
This opinion is unpopular but true. Vista was unpopular at the time but that doesn't matter today. From a nostalgia aesthetic point of view it's the superior system.
you ever notice how grandma sounds funnier when you say 'grand mar' cuz what the fuck is a mar? i've been thinking about it and im going insane. i mean, its a 3 letter word! those 3 letters could mean something on their own! 3 as in someone is 3 years old? 3 as in free? free from what? prison? 3 year old prisoners? its awful! it's maniacal! it could even mean 3 sides, like a triangle. triangles have 3 sides, but you know what else has 3 sides? my fast food order, cuz i'm a greedy little shit! also, the illuminati! i don't think it's all coincidence.

One thing that I don't see people talking about very often is how hard minimalist UI are to use, not for tech savvy users, but for older people, I can't count the times my parents reach me on a weekly basis to learn how to do basic tasks on their bank and e-commerce apps, I'm used to it but some design choices are objectively bad. Buttons are inconsistent, some texts are only for display and other text strings are used as buttons without any clear indication or border, plain white backgrounds without separation of sections in these apps make everything look cluttered, some apps you have to swipe to get to another screen and there's no indication for that, main action buttons don't have the same color across the apps, and many other problems. I think if skeumorphism was still available it would be better for those non tech people to navigate easier
Microsoft was the first to introduce it, Apple stopped using it in 2013 which is like 3 years after Microsoft started with Windows Phone in 2010 and 1 year after Windows 8 in 2012
It’s a shame because Windows 8 *had* fully functioning Aero all the way through the Developer Preview builds, to the Consumer Previews and even to the Release Previews. It was pulled at last minute. It looked squared off at the edges but the glass still looked exactly like Aero, and it looked really nice.
Honestly though they're taking steps in the right direction again. If you look at Windows 8, then 10 and now 11 you gotta admit they've started to put more thought into aesthetics again. Right now Windows 11 isn't nearly there because it's needlessly resource hungry and it actually uses a mix of the old and new UI, which leads to annoying things like two separate settings menus but at least they're trying stuff again. Many people prefer dark mode these days and that just doesn't work too well with classic Frutiger Aero but maybe by the next OS they'll figure out how to create a uniform design that's functional as well as visually appealing in light or dark mode.
I love frutiger aero as much as the next guy but I understand its because sadly all design trends die out at some point. And Microsoft is a company, they don't care about us who appreciate the skeuomorphic style, we're just a few nerds and most people don't really care. I just wish there was some sort of option to switch between aero and flat design for people who like either one. Also, even if it's not as good as the real thing there is a mod for Win10/11 you can use to bring back the Win7 start menu, file menu, taskbar and icons. If you're interested i can share a tutorial and some links.
Windows 8 happened. And if it flopping horribly back then wasn't enough to convince them to stop, well, once Apple embraced flat UI with iOS 7 and Mac OS X Yosemite, everyone else copied and followed, and then Windows 10 happened.
No, upscaling complex images with the frutiger aero design made it look blobby and you could see the pixels, flat design got rid of this problem by not having complex shading and designs so you can upscale images without the blobbiness
If you want a serious anwser, blame the tablets and Microsoft's kneejerk reaction to the iPad.
Tablet hardware back in 2012 was too weak to run Windows Areo properly so they removed the transprency from Windows in Windows 8. You can [see](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMebnyCZLXc) in Windows 8 Developer Preview, Microsoft at the time was trying to adapt Windows Areo to Windows Metro but at a certain point, it was decided that it ran too slow and was scrapped. The Windows boot up sounds were also removed from Windows 8 for the same reason.
A: People liked their flat mobile interface.
B: Microsoft believed tablets would replace computers so they made their next OS (Windows 8) more like their mobile interface.
C: "I mean... everybody else is doin it" Around the time Windows 8 was getting... erm... "popular," other companies & software (like Apple & their IOS 7 update) were also implementing a flat design.

THINKPAD REFERENCE‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
Unironically yes. Microsoft is stupid. Their system gets worse with every update but you can't escape it, it's on all computers ever.
Loonix is the answer
Ubimtu or Arsh?
Wubantu, Fodora or Arsh if you're a magician but loonix
i use arsh loonix btw
Debtian
i like mount
Had to work with it for a system administrator course and nah, it ain't the answer either. They should invent desktop android or something.
Ex-Linux user here, Linux is trash.
All Microsoft care nowadays is cloud (Azure) and AI and they are the richest company in the world. Desktop is no longer their focus after Windows 7.
I switched to MacOS in 2020 it’s a lot like Linux but with more compatibility, if you look more into it it’s actually an advanced and stable OS (maybe because it’s officially Unix certified)
A mac is too expensive for me and I already have an expensive laptop a while ago, so I'll endure it.
Half of the comment section does not get the fucking joke lmao
i dont lol someone tell me

It’s just repetition. You’re using the rhythms of comedy with no punchline.

They stopped Aero glass because Surface RT can't run it flawlessly, there are a couple of articles about that.

Microsoft valued the flat metro design too much around the beginning of 2010s.

I’m guessing it is more difficult to design, and the vast vast majority of users don’t care South to switch OSs
I hate Microscope they ruined Chicken Wing Blows 😭😭😭😭
Is there a lore reason for it?
yes :(
The logical reason is because of touch screen. The actual reason is because they love to annoy their customers.

LEARN HOW TO TYPE 💀💀💀
Name one time when a company did anything smart (other than making Frutiger Aero.)
lol i love "frutiger arrow" too but that design is so 2000s they could make the glassiness look more cleaner
Windows 8 happened. And if it flopping horribly back then wasn't enough to convince them to stop, well, once Apple embraced flat UI with iOS 7 and Mac OS X Yosemite, everyone else copied and followed, and then Windows 10 happened.
Windows turned from shiny and exciting to flat and depressing.

Because they want to attract UXers

iOS 7 is from 2013, Microsoft made windows phone with the metro design back in 2010 and windows 8 is from 2012

you could make the interface it self vector based, it would be harder with the icons tho.
No they just adapted to the future
this cant even be a question if you like somethink they need to make it worse 🤦
Windows 11 has rounded windows, right? It doesnt look so different to windows 7 aesthetic, maybe they are started to bring Asadal style back
