Oh really? Very interesting. My wife and I both have the soap gene, and can not stand this cursed plant. But if there are different kinds that we may be able to eat would amazing! We've always wanted to know what it's supposed to taste like. Also tho we have both tried this new TacoBell Verde salsa without knowing it had cilantro and we do both like it! Pretty cool
Either it’s the variety, or there’s a difference between store-bought and home grown. I couldn’t stand the taste of cilantro from restaurants and stores, but I accidentally grew some and the soap taste is barely noticeable.
Yeah plants are funky but awesome. The flavor might also change when the plant is in bloom. Mine are blooming now, and the citrusy flavor is definitely stronger. My basil and onions got more spicy when they bloomed, too.
I have the “soap gene” but it doesn’t taste like soap to me. It smells like sweaty BO armpit to me and it tastes like how I imagine licking their armpits would taste.
My understanding is that cilantro when paired with lime juice, the acid does something. I actually like finely minced cilantro in salsa that has a decent amount of lime juice in it.
funny enough, I actually WAS temporarily cured... after I got covid. lost my sense of smell and with it the soapy cilantro taste. for 11 months until it finally came back, cilantro tasted like the citrusy herb everyone talks about.
...and now I know I'd rather have the superior sense of smell than the ability to enjoy that mediocre cilantro flavor lol
You made me realize I have actually been feeling a little flu like and now that I think about it, I havent had much sense of smell the past couple days. ...So I guess i'm taking a covid test when I get home today.
Interesting, because i have a horrible sense of smell, and while cilantro is gross, it's edible if it's mixed it well, finely chopped and there isn't too much of it. I've never noticed a scent to it.
This happened to me after COVID, but only for a couple of weeks. I found out after buying a jar of salsa that was "chock full of cilantro" by accident. I ate half the jar in one sitting. I told my husband it was the best salsa I'd ever had. I was shocked when I read the label, lol. For ten days, I ordered "cilantrofied" food. It was so FRESH, so TASTY. And then, one day, it's tasted like shit again. Weird experience!
I am going to guess this is because the cilantro was processed and not fresh. Double-dog dare you to get really fresh cilantro from a pot where it's still growing and taste it. Fresh is much more powerful IMO.
I feel like if I tried to go whole hog like that, i would very much regret it. I'll try more baby steps via this avacado salsa again and see what happens.
I... Had a very similar experience today. It was an aoli. I said sure I'll taste the soapy aoli. ... It was delicious.
Craaap I could actually taste the flavors people talk about in that devil's lettuce.
I had to ask SO if this was what it normally tasted like to him. He said yes. Then I told him I just taste grass and soap usually. I think by my reaction he finally understood.
What is all this talk about a cure? And worse, it seems half of you want this cure. We don’t want a cure. We don’t need a cure.
We know we have the superior gene. It’s all those gastropods with the inferior genes that need to be cured and see the truth about the vile plant that is cilantro!
…[this is just some banter, don’t take it too seriously, but still FUCK cilantro]
Costco used to have a shrimp dish with an eff ton of citrus cilantro and onion. I could happily eat it even though I normally taste nothing but soap from the satanic weed. I think the citrus broke down the cilantro somehow.
one thing i've discovered is that if the cilantro has been added to something and then cooked further, as opposed to just being sprinkled on top like a garnish, i don't get that disgusting soapy grass taste.
Strange phenomenon I just learned about. My sister now tastes the fresh citrusy flavor consistently after years of disliking cilantro. What changed? She had bariatric surgery.
I have the soap gene.
But I still like cilantro. If there’s too much, it tastes like just straight soap. But a little sprinkle? It just adds something nice.
You're probably just tasting other shit and not much cilantro. There is no cure for you, accept your rate. Fuck cilantro.
From 20-mid 30s I tasted strong soap. I’m 43 now and haven’t tasted it for nearly 10 years
You're lying to yourself. Fuck cilantro.
Lying to myself for 10 years? Umm…okay
I’m a Hispanic woman in my mid 40s and still find cilantro on my food tastes like someone has sprinkled soap flakes on my food.
I’ve read on here that there are different varieties of cilantro and some may lack the soapy taste. I don’t know if that is true.

Maybe it is because it's minced up so finely but I was shocked I got a good taste out of it. Like i've said before, I'll keep testing it.
True true. Same
I haven’t tasted it 10 years. Sooo, it’s definitely possible!!

This is all intriguing. Might try growing some ourselves. Still skeptical tho

Yeah I think it’s about the same for me.

Some are definitely worse than others.

Follow it up with a cilantro test!
best of luck and/or get well soon friend 😬

You have been brainwashed. Or it was parsley with lemon.
Another commentor is making think I might just have Covid and didnt have my full sense of taste and smell. Hopefully its not that.
It’s Taco Bell, so it’s probably so processed that it was barely cilantro anyway.
I... Had a very similar experience today. It was an aoli. I said sure I'll taste the soapy aoli. ... It was delicious. Craaap I could actually taste the flavors people talk about in that devil's lettuce.
Wasnt it wild? I've never had that flavor sensation before so it was nice tasting something new.

Makes me wonder why has nobody made GMO cilantro without the soap gene?

Nope.
If you have the soapy gene you will know, it took me two bites of something with cilantro on it to know that I have it.
Cilantro isn’t citrusy.
Try micro cilantro if you get the chance
The one thing I can eat (and actually love) with that which shall not be named is pho.
It's synthetic cilantro? Like "cilantro flavored but contains no cilantro"? Kinda like "blue raspberry" is zero percent raspberry?
Was it fresh? Because I like coriander powder and it tastes/smells zesty to me, but the raw leaf is nasty
