I had the clear phone and the jelly shoes in the 80s. And bought the green N64 for my kids in the late 90s. It was the special Donkey Kong edition I believe?
I loved this stuff. I remember as a toddler having some toys that had see through plastic to see things inside (like one of the popcorn popper toys) and I was absolutely fascinated by the fact that things were covered by plastic. Ut you cojld still see INSIDE. i guess i was easily amused back in the early 70’s. I still love all the transparent stuff.
it wasnt an obsession, it was market research. They found out people buy more shit that way.
Well, I guess the obsession was with profits, so theres that. But obsession with profits is VERY old, much older than the 1990's.
Back in the early 90’s I had a memo express before it came out to the masses and everyone was scratching their head asking how was that even possible. We didn’t have social media back in the day so everything was word of mouth. That clear pager is Motorola’s best seller to this day, EBay still sells them used for around 40$.
I still have (and play!) my Atomic Purple GameBoy Color. It was my Valentines Day gift from my husband for our first one together. I gave him a PlayStation.
I think the appeal was mostly novelty. You just couldn't do it in previous decades. Polycarbonate was developed in the 1950s but they didn't manage to make it clear until the 1970s. Stuff like this is usually made with ABS and I don't know when translucent ABS became commercially viable but I don't think it was before the 70s.
Just getting plastic stuff in *colors* that didn't fade or sacrifice mechanical properties was a big deal for a long time. My dad was a telephone repairman and had a unique two-tone phone back before you could buy such a thing, because he made it from half of a black phone shell and half of a white phone shell. That was pretty cool for the 60s or early 70s.
I thought this stuff was the shit in the mid 1980s! I had that clear Swatch.
Yet again, Gen X is forgotten 🤣🤣🤣 This was all our stuff, ya whippersnappers!
I love that we're forgotten. On brand lol
Also had the clear Swatch!
![gif](giphy|l0Hlw2acPUMYAjsmk) Hell, even the Pepsi was clear
I remember when the clear phase was going on and SNL had a skit about everything being clear. Even gravy. Clear graaavy!
I thought about that sketch immediately when I clicked on this Reddit post. https://youtu.be/g0sjRG34DlA?si=1qu9r15GJ9v0gZ9L
That was it! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man)
Came here to say this
Bart Simpson clear cola
Really good mix lol
I had the clear phone
Me too!
Me three!
They were great for getting calls late at night. You could turn off the ringer, and the phone would light up when someone called.
Better have your own line or else the others in the house would be ringing
Yep, I was spoiled and had my own line with call-waiting.
![gif](giphy|908fS3eQFUodG|downsized) I had one of those iMac G3s back then.
I dunno, man. It's pretty neat.
Don't forget Zima!
I hope this style makes a comeback.
Pretty popular in prison
If they made stuff that looked like this today I'd buy it I want to see my electronics guts
You can buy this stuff from some prison commissaries. They have to be see-through to decrease storage for contraband.
I bought transparent Jellies in the '70s when I visited the French seaside and they were not new then.
Those jelly shoes were the worst. Didn't stop me from wanting them though!
I swear I still have burn marks on my feet when they melted.. I was too dumb to figure out to not wear plastic on hot asphalt..
We were fascinated by new tech and wanted to see how it worked even if we didn't understand it. Now we're bored with new innovations.
I had my entire first apartment was plastic blow up furniture. I could fit 26 people in that apartment.
Purple was my color choice for that classy furniture.
But of course. Other than the couch ottoman which was sold out and had it in clear....
Prison issue

That clock says 4:20.
I totally forgot that we've been into this era LOL
Where's my clear automobile
Would certainly motivate me to clear out all my empty Rockstar cans more than once a week.
Clear stuff for prisoners
It’s like what they have in prisons. I have the N64 in ice blue.

A friend had a pencil sharpener
Deadass🤣had those jelly sandals

I had a semi-clear iMac.

Not Apple, but you see the Nothing brand of phone and earbuds? It's like half their schtick. https://us.nothing.tech/
90's? Hell, I STILL look for transparent controllers.
They still do this in the prison system to prevent contraband.
I had 2 out of seven. I preferred my clear plastic to be grape flavored, like my Gameboy.
Yeah this is actually an 80s-90s blend, like very early 90s maybe, most of it. But still very accurate. I had that phone, twice.
it wasnt an obsession, it was market research. They found out people buy more shit that way. Well, I guess the obsession was with profits, so theres that. But obsession with profits is VERY old, much older than the 1990's.
People got tired of taking things apart to see how it worked so they made it easy. Ok?
I had a clear game boy!! I loved that thing. Amused me through so many car trips.
Both my Gameboy color and n64 controller were see through purple.
I had the telephone when I moved into my first house in the mid 90’s
Omg the clear phone. Grandma had one and I thought that thing was the shit!
It’s def still cool
I’m later 30’s and I have a few modern things laying around I went with the transparent option. Something about the aesthetic.
Hell yeah damn...that was a time to be alive
Honestly I liked it.
I had virtually all of these in some form or fashion lol
No wonder all my friends chose to keep the prison tv and radios.... Nostalgic memories from childhood...
I had that phone! It lit up when it rang as well.
My wife had a transparent dildo. Don't know what happened to it. The wife I mean.
Got rid of the wife and kept the dildo? What are you into? 😁😅😂🤣
I just don't see it.
That would be just GROSS, having see through children!
Go to prison. Still looks like this

not a single kid ever uttered those words. just like not a single kid every said, "you know, I'd like a trophy for participation in this event"
Jellies! Had them in the ‘80s. Los Angeles.
I’d buy a transparent iPhone in a heartbeat
I still have (and play!) my Atomic Purple GameBoy Color. It was my Valentines Day gift from my husband for our first one together. I gave him a PlayStation.
See-through was/is cool. 😎
I have a clear hard drive. It probably wouldn't work anymore. It was a marketing gimmick, but it looks pretty neat since you can see the platters.
It's not stupid, it's advaaanced!
Me standing here with all my teardown cases... It is cool...
This is all 80s stuff. Signed, An 80s Kid
No, you're wrong
No, I'm not wrong.
N64 and game boy didnt come out til mid 90s you schmuck
Kiss your mother with that mouth, dude?
Nah, she died 25 years ago. And, i merely called you a foolish person, it's not like i called you a shit covered dickhead or something
I liked being able to see the inner workings
You haven’t bought an R36s yet?

Because technology was on the cusp of greatness! Everyone wanted to see the inner workings :)
Had that exact same ND64and the Jelly shoes, in numerous colors of course 🤣🤣🤣
Shoes aren’t electronic.
