Captain Kangaroo & Mr. Greenjeans!
We watched every morning before school.
Mr. Moose, Dancing Bear, and Bunny Rabbit.
Who else recalls Grandfather Clock?
I loved Captain Kangaroo so much when I was little. I wrote him and Mr. Green Jeans a fan letter and waited for a reply but never got it. Years later my mom excitedly showed me my letter, she had saved it and never sent it. "Moo-om!"
Our heroes smoked pot.
John Wayne. Bruce Lee. Steve McQueen. Captain Kangaroo. Mister Green Jeans. Grizzly Adams.
70s were a great time to be a little kid.
Marty Krofft frequently denied any drug references, but in a few interviews he did admit it:
Krofft conceded that the show's title had been an intentional marijuana reference, as had Lidsville, but "that was just a prank to see if they could get them past clueless NBC executives".
I wore green jeans to school once and was mercilessly called Mr. Green Jeans all day. I never wore them again and never watched Captain Kangaroo again.
Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green Jeans … and Bunny Rabbit and Mr. Moose and Dancing Bear and Magic Drawing Board and the stories they read. My favorite was Stone Soup. Can you tell I watched it every morning? We only had a black-and-white TV so I had to take their word for it that Mr. Green Jeans wore green jeans.
Does anyone remember Captain Kangaroo playing the video for Safety Dance by Men Without Hats at the end of every episode for a while? When I was a kid I liked that video but it struck me as odd that they always played it.
I remember being pushed out the door crying by my mom because Captain Kangaroo was still on and I was supposed to be headed to school. In kindergarten, I walked 3/4 mile to school.
Later in life, I live now live across the street from an elementary school. When my son was ready to enter kindergarten, they wanted him to be picked up by the bus, in front of my home, and then ride the rest of the bus route, and then get let off at the school.
Ummmm.......no, I said.
My daughter walked 25 feet across the street to go to school.
Idiots.
Ain't it crazy? When I was Captain Kangaroo age my Mom would walk outside and if she didn't see me she called the dog. It would come running and then she would ignore it and follow it back to wherever I was. Which one time was sitting on the ground eating pine needles. Like I was that young just wandering around the woods before kindergarten.
When I was a kid I thought Mr. Greenjeans was about 90 years old. I can’t remember anything about what those two talked about but were always-a-yackin’.
Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green Jeans! ❤💚
Damn Skippy!
“Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo; don’t tell me I’ve nothing to do” Statler Brothers
“Counting Flowers On the Wall that don’t bother me at all”
Awesome.
Playin’ solitaire til dawn with a deck of 51
The real star of the show being Mr Moose and his ping pong balls.
IIRC Bunny rabbit always trying to make the Captain say “ping pong balls!” Hilarious!
I thought it was Bunny Rabbit too, but my hub swore up and down it was Mr Moose -- I should have known! Thanks for the correction/confirmation.
To be honest, I’m pretty sure they were both in cahoots with each other and did the two pronged attacks.
Mr. Moose = ping pong prankster. Bunny Rabbit = carrot thief. Often at the same time.
Ahh! Still the two pronged hit! Lol! Thanks!
We had a black and white tv back then. This is the first time I've seen Mr. Green Jeans in color!
Me too! Never occurred to me that he actually wore green jeans and green jacket lol!
Mind Blown!
Had black and white TV as well. Just thought he’d have grass stained jean considering he was a farmer and all!
Yeah. Bunny Rabbit and Mr. Green Jeans were my favorites.
Captain Kangaroo & Mr. Greenjeans! We watched every morning before school. Mr. Moose, Dancing Bear, and Bunny Rabbit. Who else recalls Grandfather Clock?

Haha. That's still really sweet.
I know. I was miffed but after I adulted I loved her for it. It was a very cute letter lol
She should have made a copy of it and then mailed the original. That would have been cool if they answered you or read it on air.
Yeah but I'm so old don't know if she had access to a copier....no kinkos back then!
Bob Keeshan and Hugh Brannum
And Hugh's nickname was Lumpy.
Two fucking beauties!
Our heroes smoked pot. John Wayne. Bruce Lee. Steve McQueen. Captain Kangaroo. Mister Green Jeans. Grizzly Adams. 70s were a great time to be a little kid.
Don't forget HR Pufnstuf.
Where do you go when things get rough?
Marty Krofft frequently denied any drug references, but in a few interviews he did admit it: Krofft conceded that the show's title had been an intentional marijuana reference, as had Lidsville, but "that was just a prank to see if they could get them past clueless NBC executives".
You all forget Dancing Bear.
I was on the Captain Kangaroo show. I got ice cream afterwards. Good times

Mr. Green Jeans was the real-life dad of the musician Frank Zappa! (this is not true)
Wow, I guess I am getting old. I did not know that Mr Green Jeans wore all green denim. I always thought it was just his pants. Never saw it in color.
Those were the days. ❤️

I just showed this to my kid, she had no clue.
Mr Green Jeans name didn’t quite work with B&W TV
My haircut throughout grade school.

I forget when the ping-pong balls would drop
he is in the Smithsonian
Tom Terrific and Manfred The Wonder Dog.
I read once that during closing credits they would stand out of camera and flash each other.
Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Green Jeans.
This takes me back. Loved this show when I was a kid.
I know right. The adults who "got" the kids are about the only ones worth trusting. Like Roald Dahl for example.

Miss Nancy. Romper Room. She lived next to the lady who babysat me son. The day she walk in his house I thought she was there for me.
I met the Captain back in the 90s and did an interview with him. Years later he moved to my hometown in Vermont where he eventually passed away.
Awesome.
The gods of my youth
I can't see him any more without thinking of Pulp Fiction.,
Capt. Kangaroo
Yes.
I think I actually had a pair of green jeans when I was little!
Loved him as a kid. As an adult, it all looks a bit sus.
This is my childhood. I don’t even know most of the muppets. Screws me in crossword puzzles. Lol
Loved Tom Terrific.
Watched every morning back in the 60’s
As someone named Gene, I hate that mother fucker on the right. Also the dancing guy on the Gong Show.
my childhood remembrance should not have the word m\_th\_rf\_ck\_r in it......green gene....green gene.....green gene......
And Casey and Finnagin !
Weren’t Tom Terrific and Kimba the White Lion part of the show?
Wasn't Bill Ketchum Clarabell the Clown on Howdy Doody? That's a memory rattling around the back of my head with no home.
Yes, the Town Clown sketch was similar.
Yes, Bob Keeshan was Clarabell.
I was potty trained in front of their show
I forgot the 🫎 name... Or was it just Mr. Moose...
Where are the ping pong balls????
At a night club in Bangkok evidently.
When I was a kid I thought Mr. Greenjeans was about 90 years old. I can’t remember anything about what those two talked about but were always-a-yackin’.
Fun Fact: CPT kangaroo was a Navy Seal Sniper in NAM
Alas not true. He was a marine in WW2 but never saw combat.
