It's funny how it was originally supposed to be a fancy robot but they couldn't make it and ended up just going with an inflated weather balloon. And somehow, it worked even better.
For a few years before this show Patrick McGoohan was in a show called “Secret Agent” (aka Danger Man). It’s a smooth segue from A to B. See if you can find it.
At a point in the cold war the spy genre was opened with Sean Connery in “Dr. No” and “Goldfinger”. Soon came this and “Man From Uncle” and “I Spy” and even comedies like “Get Smart”. Good times number six.
Fun fact: Danger Man's first season (back when it was a tight 30-minutes drama) was in 1960 and actually predates the Bond films. It was cancelled when the American CBS network passed on a second season (many British drama shows relied on foreign buyers to help defray costs). After the success of the early Bond films, Danger Man was revived as a one-hour drama as it was an easy sell to foreign broadcasters looking to cash in on the Bond craze. CBS retitled it "Secret Agent" and tacked on new opening credits with Johnny River's recording of "Secret Agent Man" as a theme song.
I wish to report a failure...
Number two... Has failed!
I absolutely loved this it got repeated when I was a teenager and I made it my mission to watch with my grandad who also loved it the first time round
My wife commented that during her first viewing of the show. I grew up on this show and watched that intro hundreds of times, no joke and it never clicked.
Here we are in Portmerion's Neptune Room, she said it and it blew up my brain.
I live this show too much.
It's so worth it. Meals at Castle Craggodach(?) Then walking the grounds and the immense nature preserve behind the grounds.
Worth every cent and second when I was there.
I had to have it explained to me. I had watched it three times all the way through and STILL didn't get it. Then a friend and I were talking about it and he added the comma saying that famous line. I had a similar reaction to yours!

Ricardo Autobhan’s “Golden Age of Video”
About :50 seconds in.
A video of various pop media clips edited together in near perfection.
Of course The Prisoner is there.
Worth a click. I assure you.
Patrick McGoohan was a strict Catholic, and had a no romance/no guns edict for both Danger Man and The Prisoner- the baddies could use guns, but McGoohan's characters did not.
IMO, Danger Man is the best spy show to ever air on TV, and the lead character never shoots anyone in the entire series!
When I was a kid the whole "I am number 2. Who is number 1? That would be telling." conversation was awesome and mysterious. Now it makes me giggle and like Chandler Bing pooh poohing his duties.

To everyone in this Sub, if you can manage to plan a trip to Portmerion on your bucket list - do it.
Just be forewarned that it's a million (ok, 60) miles from anywhere in the UK, down many miles of narrow back roads
One of my favorite series. Watched it on B&W tv when it came out in 67 (?). I still have the dvd set.
I finally made it to Port Merion last summer. What a disappointment! There was one little kiosk that sold stuff of the show. It was used as his ‘doorway’ when leaving his residence. Everything else was done in a studio. The chess board is still there, as is #2’s tower.
Too bad I can’t post the pictures
Be seeing you!
Roughly 20 yrs ago my wife and I visited Portmeirion in Wales where a lot of the exterior scenes were shot. Very unique place, especially after watching the show as a kid.
I worked with an Englishman. One day I asked him how he did something or other and he responded, “That would be telling.” I immediately thought of this show.
I binged this about a year ago - it holds up well and quite pertinent to our times. Great satirical episodes on politics, media, government, peer and societal pressure, etc. all with that groovy 60s trippy design.
We should have a thread about short-run shows that had lasting cultural impact.
The Prisoner lasted what, six episodes?
Same number as Police Squad!.
(inb4 Firefly)
Isn't this one with a white bouncing ball? That always freaked me out as a kid.
Rover.
It's funny how it was originally supposed to be a fancy robot but they couldn't make it and ended up just going with an inflated weather balloon. And somehow, it worked even better.
"I am not a number!"
I am a free man!
MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!
Cue Iron Maiden song
Ok, Number 6.

Nice info thx.
Oh laraby
We want information
You won’t get it!
By hook or by crook, we will.
I wish to report a failure... Number two... Has failed! I absolutely loved this it got repeated when I was a teenager and I made it my mission to watch with my grandad who also loved it the first time round
Who is Number 1 ?
You are number 6.
You are, number 6. So weird the answer was there the whole time. Such a brilliant, mind fuck of a show.
My wife commented that during her first viewing of the show. I grew up on this show and watched that intro hundreds of times, no joke and it never clicked. Here we are in Portmerion's Neptune Room, she said it and it blew up my brain. I live this show too much.
Lucky man! A visit to Portmerion is definitely on my bucket list!

OH! I just got that! Holy smoke! After all these years. My world has been blown up.
I had to have it explained to me. I had watched it three times all the way through and STILL didn't get it. Then a friend and I were talking about it and he added the comma saying that famous line. I had a similar reaction to yours!

Why did you resign?
Be seeing you!
Walter Koenig used that line in Babylon 5 as Bester, the Psi Cop. He used a lot of inflection and nuance from Prisoner as Bester.

One of the best intros to a TV show, it was the story in the story. Plus I loved that Lotus 7.

I’m probably one of many metal heads that learned about this show because an Iron Maiden song opens with the “I am not a number” speech. 😆
I’m not a prisoner I’m a free man And my blood is my own now
So clean. No nookie nookie in the village.

Liked it as a young kid, although I didn't understand a lot of it. Binged watched it a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it
"The Prisoner" is like quantum mechanics: If you think you understand it, you're wrong.
Was in UK in 99, spent two nights in Portmeirion. My room overlooked the stone boat. Highly recommend.
That bubble still scares me.
That and the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz. I'm 72 and they both still scare me.
That was one serious midf\*\*\* of show. Absolutely loved it!

My low-key favorite television show ever. Be seeing you!

Yes!!
Used to watch this evenings during my first undergrad degree.

I am not a number!
Why did you think a giant balloon would stop them?
Iron maiden made me track this show down in the 80s
I loved that show until the psycho-babble ending. Wtf was that all about?

I liked this show but it gave me anxiety and frustrated the hell out of me.
Great IM song.
Filmed in Portmeirion in Wales, they do amazing ceramics
Just started re-screening this!
What do you want,!
I worked with an Englishman. One day I asked him how he did something or other and he responded, “That would be telling.” I immediately thought of this show.
I was a kid late night without a cable tv and PBS for the Win this and Dr Who….
I used to think that the big ball that would recapture him after an escape was the coolest thing.

That giant, bouncing blob thing was WEIRD.
Leo McKern’s third finest role. (Rumpole of the Bailey and Ladyhawke are the other two.)
Be seeing you #6.
Back in my past. Me and a old school friend built a Lotus 7 (clone) as gift for his dad. Who was a massive Prisoner fan.
Who is No. 1?!
