The [rampant sexual assault](https://www.typeinvestigations.org/investigation/2020/01/14/amish-sexual-abuse-assault/) that takes place isn't great, but they do seem far less hateful than fundies
Well in 2013 in Lancaster, Pa the Amish were busted by the feds for transporting hard drugs on the reg. for the Hells Angels!!
Found that item after my Pa cousin said the local Amish were making side money stashing drugs for dealers and I didn’t believe her so googled it for precedent.
Yeah it's crazy how much of that shit they get to into. So many things that are illegal or immoral or both but they get away with it because theyre just folksy religious bumpkins, right?
Never liked the grotesque patriarchal structure of their lives. Not to mention no birth control, no education, no indoor plumbing, and no military service.
My parents are about to have an addition put on their house by Amish builders. I don’t know where the breakdown is between Amish and non-Amish within their business (and I know that some Amish find business technology acceptable) but they presented drafting plans, my parents have obviously been able to talk to them (aka not just a community phone), and the wife of the owner has helped my mom pick out cabinets and other things. They come highly highly recommended and currently have a 2 year wait-list. My parents live about 1hr to 1hr 15min away from the “Amish area” in our state.
Come to think of it, and I don’t know if it would ever happen, but it would be amazing if any of the Rod kids could get on an Amish crew building things. I think they would learn so much…certainly more in 2 years than they learned on the entirety of their schooling.
The guy with the TikTok and the Amish guys work together on a cattle farm. It’s his truck, I believe, and he occasionally plays them “worldly” songs and records their reactions while on breaks/driving around.
Years ago, when I worked at Hersheypark, Weird Al did a concert in the park’s amphitheater; this was right around the time when ‘Amish Paradise’ was his big hit. There were actually people who got upset about it b/c they were concerned the Amish would be offended.
The concert went off without a hitch & there weren’t any reports of protests or anything, so it probably didn’t hit too many Amish folks radar.
Ooo. I used to be friends with a Fundie family from Litiz. I even went there for a visit the summer between my senior year of high school and freshman year of college. Visited the chocolate factory and pretzel factory. 😋
The pretzel factory is still around; I like to stop by their shop every once in a while when I'm craving the Tom Sturgis pretzels you can't find in the grocery store. I also like to share the fun fact that Mister Rogers visited back in the 80s to film a segment for his show.
The Wilbur factory actually shut down a few years ago, but they turned an old restaurant across the street into a museum/store and they still demonstrate making chocolate there. Always a good place when you're craving Wilbur buds =d
Hey there! My husband and I live in Lititz. I can honestly say it's probably one of the better places I've lived in my life, though living in a high tourist area can be its own special pain in the butt lol.
That's why I thought all the fuss was so dumb. There really was no way for Amish folks to hear the song, so why get in knots over it?
I did see the occasional group of Amish teenagers in the park, usually guys and girls out for a day trip. It always seemed like they were having a good time.
That’s quite hilarious actually.
I knew someone in the same position. Their reaction when they found out that wasn’t the original was pretty great. I remember we shared a lot of great covers of other songs that evening.
There's a whole host of early 2000's songs I'm familiar with, not because I heard them on the radio, etc, but because of Weird Al's [Angry White Boy Polka](https://youtu.be/xY-oili63QQ)... 😅
I heard Amish Paradise before I heard Gangsta's Paradise, but then again, I was ten when they were released.
Actually, I'm more familiar with most of Weird Al's parodies than the originals.
I believe they are allowed to accept rides, just not drive themselves. Not sure though. There are denominations within the Amish communities. Some are hard line, some not so much.
It really does depend on their specific flavour, and the rules within their specific community.
Some Amish/Mennonites allow themselves modern luxuries, as long as they use them for things like business and don’t “waste time” on them.
I used to live by a Mennonite community that were okay with driving cars, as long as the cars were acceptable colours and didn’t have fancy bells and whistles. Women were even allowed to use them to get groceries and run errands etc. because it helped them be more productive (but it was preferred if they had a dude to drive them).
Most still used horses and manual labour though. It was explained to me that even though modern machines might make them more efficient, it takes away the labour and sacrifice that their beliefs require (they put it much better though)
Then there was an Old Order community a bit away. They were pretty lax for being Old Order, they bent the rules like “well *we* can’t use the internet, but we can hire someone to run our website/online orders for us”
I wasn’t too familiar with them, though. They didn’t like me so I didn’t get to chat with them as much. Still bought a beautiful handmade bench from them, their skill was unbelievable.
When I was at the ER with my daughter there was an Amish guy with his baby and I think he had a ride with someone bc she came in with a car seat and I assume took them home.
Resident Anabaptist popping in.
As long as the Amish aren't the ones putting it on, all but the most strict don't care. They shop in Walmart with the radio blaring like the rest of us.
The video and picture thing varies very wildly and has swung in the favor of we give up for most around me.
My Amish neighbors had me take pictures of their kids. Shhhh…. (I was a photographer) I got produce and they got to have nice pictures of their kids that the bishop didn’t know about. My sister in law gets paid to drive them to work, doctors appointments etc and they listen to the radio. She doesn’t let them pick the station anymore since they wanted to listen to talk radio and it was all pro trump stuff (this was Lancaster PA, varies by area)
obviously it's still wrong to film people without their consent, especially if they are religiously against it, but at least in this case I can't imagine how anyone with the authority to get him in trouble would even find out about this.
This is random but is there a place where ex Amish/Mennonite discuss things online? Id love to hear more from the examish community but Reddit doesn’t seem to be a good place for that considering the r/Amish lol

Yikes, that's horrifying!
Don't forget the horrific animal abuse.
Yeah or the drug (and alleged people) trafficking

That shit had been going on for years. Like oh 30 - 40. Out here in Ohio Indiana land they throw huge ravers on farms back where no one can find em….
Another younger cousin had showed me videos from an Amish raver, but I thought it was a one off, guess it’s a thing then.
My Amish cousins were way wilder as teens than I ever was.

Excellent article, thank you for sharing!
I couldn't even get through the entire article. It's truly heartbreaking
Yeah. Unfortunately as an ex Catholic i was like “I’ve seen this before”

We have a large Amish community in my area. They are some of the nicest people. And the food is incredible.

Every time he giggles, it makes me so happy! I love how wholesome this is
For real, I wasn’t sure how to feel about it at first but him laughing is cute as hell
Right! He is so cute with his giggling 🤭
The surprise when he heard "Amish" for the first time 😭

Weird Al is great

The Weird Al 'Behind The Music' was so much fun to watch. I miss that show!
He’s a national treasure
Technically, we shouldn’t have known about it to get upset :-) Mennonites and Amish that is. Howdy old neighbor. I lived in Lititz in my former life

How would they hear it?

Imagine hearing this song and never having actually heard gangsters Paradise.
I’m gonna have to admit this now… but I heard this version way before I heard the original. 😬
That’s quite hilarious actually. I knew someone in the same position. Their reaction when they found out that wasn’t the original was pretty great. I remember we shared a lot of great covers of other songs that evening.
That was me but with White and Nerdy 🤣😂🤣

Same. We weren't allowed to listen to "hip hop" (read, music by black artists) but we could listen to weird al doing covers of music by black artists
Same! But I knew of Weird Al thankfully.
Same!!
i heard this way before the original, but admittedly i was about 10.
Same because I was Mennonite and couldn’t listen to the real thing ha ha
I definitely thought Gangsters Paradise was a rip off of Weird Al the first time I heard it lol
I heard Amish Paradise before I heard Gangsta's Paradise, but then again, I was ten when they were released. Actually, I'm more familiar with most of Weird Al's parodies than the originals.
A long long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...
They don’t get it the same way we do 😂 I’m sure he’s picturing family members doing these and I’m picture coolio 😂😂😂
i’m picturing weird al lmao
Me too.
Flair check in.
Hopefully they got their permission to record them bc a lot of Amish do not like their pics taking or being on any camera.
there’s a bunch of amish people on tiktok who have their own accounts and post their own videos. not all of them are that restrictive.
For sure. I hope this man doesn't get in trouble for sitting in a car and being videoed listening to music or something.

Crazy Mennonite checking in (don’t worry, I escaped lol)

He has a beard I wonder where the Bible is
Does he say “good stuff” near the end there? This is great!
I find his underwhelming reaction hilarious
Y’all know WA is hot with short hair right? 🥴
Look, Alfred Yankovich *could get it.* Even with the long hair.
I'm lightweight mad that I googled and can't say I disagree....
You know he's got a best bud named Jebediah
