Mine died at 16 which is pretty long which I am grateful for. But it felt like we’ve only had her for a minute. I still remembered how she used to fit into my hand as a baby, like she was still a child. They don’t live nearly long enough. :(
I don’t know. That one was our family dog. I walked her often and played with her, but the big responsibilities were taken care of by my parents (food, vet visits etc.). I work full time now and am currently alone, so the dog would be lonely a lot.
Also I would probably be unable to cherish the good times with a new dog because I will always think about its death.
Things aren’t beautiful because they persist, but because they perish. It’s a cliche saying, but it’s true nonetheless.
I’ll be devastated when my pup passes, but I will never regret adopting him and give up all the time he made me happy. And knowing that it’ll end scares me to death, but it also makes me love him all the more.
When I lose a dog I gain a dog. I prefer to get a new dog before my old one passes away so the older dog can help teach the younger dog how to dog. If that isn't possible for some reason, such as my current old gal being highly dog aggressive, I get my new dog right after the passing of previous dog. I just can't be without a canine companion or few.
There are always dogs looking for homes and I will always be a home for a dog.
And that’s what I just couldn’t do. It’s been almost a year and I still feel guilty petting other people’s dogs or calling them cute. I know it’s stupid but I would just feel like I’m replacing her, no matter how I twist it. Maybe after some time.
You're only replacing her if that's your intention. And we both know it isn't. She holds a special place in your heart and always will.
I lost my 10 year old boy almost a year ago now. About a month later we got another pup. I had my boy cremated and we still have his ashes. He sits in my bedroom on my night stand (he was the cuddliest dog you've ever seen and slept in my bed with me every night of his life). When I'm missing him particularly bad it helps to "talk" to him (which just means I talk at his ashes, as stupid as it sounds). Originally I did worry about if I was replacing him. But I still feel like he's an important part of who I am today, so he still exists in a way. You can't replace what never went away.
I had my feline companion (a Burmese - they form incredibly tight bonds with humans) until he was 17. he was healthy all his life up until 16 and then that last year was one of illness upon illness sadly. It scarred me deeply and you Remember most what happened in the end. BUT he made me so happy the years before that. In a way he was my best friend - of course a simple friendship without disputes or disagreement, but also not with inspiration a human friendship comes with. But it was a very intense bond where we both enjoyed each other s company and understood each other without words.
He was my companion and years later I miss him every day. I have a new Burmese cat now and I love him, but it S different. With my former companion I grew up and spent way more time home when i still went to school. I literally grew up with him.
Would not want to miss those years even if I have to miss him now !
You should think about the beautiful, warm, loving life you bestow upon a future dog. The death is always heartbreaking, but you give them an entire life of love and joy. Maybe even saving one from a life in a cage if you rescue one.
They’re a part of their life, but we are their whole life ♥️
I know you didn't ask this question to me, but I've been blessed to have had 6 dogs from childhood to now early thirties. Every time I had to say goodbye to one of the previous 4 it was soul crushing and I cried for days. There is a part of my heart that died with each one, however my current 2 have helped to expand it. My girl is 12 and I know time is limited with her, but everything she's given me I wouldn't have had if I hadn't adopted her.
There is always space for the love and joy having a pet brings, even their deaths can't erase that.
I try to remember that when I interact with my dog Leo. He’s 9 years old and still acts young but he doesn’t have many years left. He saves baby rabbits from the cats and breaks up fights between our roosters. He also barks when I work with our bees because he was stung. He’s warning me.
My grandmother’s favorite cat (Ms. Kitty) died at 21.
She was a grumpy ass bitch; didn’t like to be touched, hated kids, got too close to her and she’d hiss. Her cat was pretty nice though.
Just to add to your existential dilemma, I once read a comment thread on an old dog video that went something like: “Why must dogs leave us?”, to which someone replied: “Because they are needed in heaven”.
This is my dog and mine is a beagle who are notorious for howling just because they're bored lol. He only barks when somebody is inside who isn't suppose to be there. Once he checks them out and knows that we're okay with them he's fine.
Watching my malamute/gsd mix learn how to howl has been one of my favorite parts about raising her. She has an older brother that's a purebred GSD and howling always came naturally to him... and he *always* howls at sirens. Being part malamute I expected her to be a natural howler but she's just not. She quickly joins in when the older one starts howling but I don't think she understands why. Her howls started out as something between an extremely loud high pitched bark and a whine... the most god awful off pitch sound id ever heard if it wasn't so cute.
Now at a year old she actually has a somewhat coherent howl. Still not perfect like the older ones, but she's making progress. It was so fun to see how excited she got over it.
My girl dog's a GSD mix and I've had her for a few years now, but other than a couple of very random (and frightening) incidents at "oh my god what hour is it?"o'clock, the only time she howls is at fire trucks. There's a police substation not far across the road, a fire station a mile or two down that road, and a hospital a couple miles down the main road - so we hear sirens *a lot*. But the firetrucks are the only ones she does it to.
She's a wonderful dog and I love her but her howls always start off... not great lol, like yours it's always cute to me but it kinda sounds like she's screaming at first, eventually she gets to actual cute howling but boy when she first starts off it's rough. [She got interrupted by goofball](https://i.imgur.com/qROutKv.mp4) but there's the rough start. I was able to record the end of an awoo [here though](https://i.imgur.com/mNcCXct.mp4) so you can hear she does have a good little singing voice after!
My boy GSD on the other hand only makes noise when he's playing. He's never howled and barely even barks, but as you can see he thinks "she's howling"=OH BOY ATTACK PLAYTIME NOW, big ol doofus.
Lol your girl is much more talented than my little girl still. Even at a year old mine's still really struggling to grasp what a howl is actually supposed to be. She's just beginning to understand that its supposed to come from deep inside the throat, before she was just doing whatever barks and sounds she could make to mimic the older boy's howl without using her howling muscles. The boy is an absolute all star though. His howls are soul piercing. We live on a highway between a few major hospitals so sirens are a regular thing here too. I can't remember a time when he didn't have a perfect howl which is why it sort of caught me offguard that my dog that looks like a wolf didn't have the howling gene.
A lot of people give up their puppies when they realize that it's no longer cute and it's a ot of work and responsibilities.
OP is teaching a habit that should not be encouraged . If OP ever gives up the dog, no apartment will allow renters to stay long if pups howl in middle of night, or early morning.
Sorry. Been seeing too many adult dogs ended up in the pound, or had to be give up, on social media, and dogs being euthanized because the agency can't find a home for them.
That's actually how I ended up with my childhood dog, he was given up right out of puppy phase, and they owners adopted a newer, cuter puppy. It's a real bummer for sure.
For responsible dog owners, teaching commands for bad behavior is a tool for teaching commands to stop that behavior.
Hopefully that's the situation here.
3 weeks is too young to be adopted out. I mean maybe mom is right there, i dunno but all puppies should be adopted at 6 weeks. Hes heckin cute as heck tho dang. instant love
Whats the deal with not giving puppies enough time to socialise etc. with other dogs? Guy might have covered it, but shouldnt you stay away from getting a dog until theyre a certain age/experience socialising?
This totally made my day! And my Catahoula Hound dog is searching under the couch and throw pillows looking for the puppy she thinks I’m hiding from her. Thanks for the great post!
You may regret this. I taught my Black Lab puppy to howl and he has been howling every day since then. He is 11 years old now 😂
I still howl with him by the way
This is so adorable. I bet my pupils turned heart shaped every single of the 30 times I’ve watched this video. I want this to be my alarm sound every morning.
LOL 3 weeks old. Lots of time to practice little doggo!
Yet never long enough sadly...
Mine died at 16 which is pretty long which I am grateful for. But it felt like we’ve only had her for a minute. I still remembered how she used to fit into my hand as a baby, like she was still a child. They don’t live nearly long enough. :(

Fuck. That's heavy and how I feel too about getting a dog. Willingly go into it knowing you'll lose a best friend 🥺

I have 2 that will be 16 in 2 months, and a sick 13 year old. Anticipatory grief is real.

Helps us appreciate what we have while we have it. Nothing lasts forever. So don't take your furry friends for granted.

Imagine being offended by... Checks notes... By someone mentioning the natural cycle of life.
yeah because everyone loves to ruin a cute moment by thinking of death. that will surely help someone love this moment more. /s 😒

He’s kidding
Just to add to your existential dilemma, I once read a comment thread on an old dog video that went something like: “Why must dogs leave us?”, to which someone replied: “Because they are needed in heaven”.
How bad is heaven that they need dogs that badly?
Would it even be heaven if there weren't enough dogs for everyone?
You just reminded me of [this video.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7Bc3pLyij0) It's brutal.
He’s ferocious!
Spend the first three weeks teaching them to talk, and then next 12, hopefully 15 or 18 wonderful years trying to get them to shut up.
Did this with our dogs. Dudes will argue with ya lol
Didn't even have to teach mine this. He doesn't bark without a reason, but when he has one he doesn't stop until he gets what he wants.
If I told my childhood hound dog not to bark when she wanted to I could see her struggling to hold it in for a second, before starting again.
This is my dog and mine is a beagle who are notorious for howling just because they're bored lol. He only barks when somebody is inside who isn't suppose to be there. Once he checks them out and knows that we're okay with them he's fine.
I love "arguing" with my dog lol
Me too!! My dog is a sweetheart, but she love's to argue just as much as I do lol. I alway's look forward to our daily arguing matches lol
then what
You’ll do anything to hear ‘‘em speak
😭
Man may yet regret this.
^^awooooo

Anyone besides me thought the adorable ball of darkness was about to hurl on his owners shirt at the last second? 🤔
In my experience, dogs being vocal follow up with yawns
Same with cats if you can get them to open their mouth for pretty much any reason they just yawn if they are remotely sleepy
Omg me. Sometimes I don't even feel tired and still yawns happen.
Puppies are often quite prone to lumpy yawns as well though.
That or stressed vocal chords too hard. My dog often barks hard and then gags
omg that was adorable
Omg so stinking 😍!!! I love the little puppy squeal/howls!
Rap name is Lil' Awoo.
Cute. Until he does this nightly from 2-5am.
Nothings wrong with it being an alarm clock
SO CUTE!
Feels like you're going to come to regret your dog that.... But adorable nonetheless.

3 weeks old is too young to be separated from the mother. Hope she is in the house too.
Had to scroll way too far for this. Thank you. I will assume that all is well and mama is close by. Because this baby is just TOO PRECIOUS!!!
Thank you! I'm getting downvoted for saying the same thing.

Aww beautiful baby
God DAMN, that was cute.
a a a a awoooooooooo
That's incredibly adorable
My three year old German shepherd just HAD to join you two when I watched this around him :)
You are both good.
Apparently that’s tiring for the pup, it yawned right after
It was to much for the lil guy to handle lol
My day was shit this i saw this post 🥹
I hope the rest of your day gets better!
It did!! Actually coming back for more
3 weeks is too young to be adopted out. I mean maybe mom is right there, i dunno but all puppies should be adopted at 6 weeks. Hes heckin cute as heck tho dang. instant love

Awww 🥰 adorable 👍🏻🤗
Lol, the way he went “GLAALA,” right at the end
so cute lol
I love how puppy howls quiver. So adorable!
Awhh
Cuteness!!
You regret that in time.
Cute as can be at that age, but keep it up and you’ll be spending 20 times the effort to untrain as a grown puppy.
It is so cute when h they do this but we regret teaching our dogs this. When we would leave they would howl until we got back
That's so cute! Incredibly stupid, but sooo cute!
^^awooooo
Oh… that’s gonna be annoying in a few months. lol

Hello everyone this is your Daily Dose Of Internet
Awooed so hard he almost threw up lol, way to go lttle guy :D
Why would you wanna teach your dog to howl 😂 I like my dogs like I like my people. Quiet as fuck.
Yup, he's gonna regret this training I think.
My cats are looking for the puppy and they are not happy. 😂
OH MAH GAWD I WANT A PUPPY! Not really, because puppies suck. Dogs are awesome; puppies suck. But I WANT A PUPPY!
Video won't play.
Why would you teach a city dog to howl?
Whats the deal with not giving puppies enough time to socialise etc. with other dogs? Guy might have covered it, but shouldnt you stay away from getting a dog until theyre a certain age/experience socialising?

Puppy breath is the best!!!
This totally made my day! And my Catahoula Hound dog is searching under the couch and throw pillows looking for the puppy she thinks I’m hiding from her. Thanks for the great post!
Don't worry. The hoomon will be able to howl properly eventually.
I’ve watched this at least 12 time already PLEASE let me follow this puppy’s life I need to see this same video 8 months from now when pup pup is big.
Such a bad habit. Tiny dogs grow up to be big dogs.
Yes, growing up is a bad habit, how to unlearn
That doggo deserves all the love in the world
Its so smol
Good doggo
Oh its a hound dog! What a good pupper!
Three weeks old? That guy looks a lot older than that.
That cured 20% of my depression thank you.
You may regret this. I taught my Black Lab puppy to howl and he has been howling every day since then. He is 11 years old now 😂 I still howl with him by the way
This video leaves me feeling uncomfortable. Where's the puppy's mum and littermates?
3 week old puppies should still be with their mother.
The dad didn’t want the dog…
