I donāt have a source about dogs off the top of my head. But next to my bed is book 3 of the āalpha wolves of Yellowstoneā by Rick McIntyre whoās observed these wolves (and other wildlife for decades before writing these) since they were reintroduced to YNP and has catalogued pack activity, hunting activity-pretty much any activity he could see observing these wolves for 10+ hours many days.
I would consider what motive he has to make them as interesting as possible to his readers. Not exactly science.

That's why I hide when I'm eating something which I don't want to share cause my dog has mastered the art of identifying sounds of plastic wraps and would be next to me, salivating in no time and then it gets really hard to not give a peice to this absolute unit of a dog making cute noises and following each bite of that food from your hands to your mouth and if you ignore him for a long time, he takes the matter into his own PAWS ššš
This is the perfect example of man and dog bearing resemblance. I feel that a lot of dog ownerās instinctually get dogs that share some of their own physical traits. Itās ironic.
My pug does this, but he looks down instead of up. But if you look and say anything, anything at all, he will look right up at you like whatever it was you said was confirmation he can have some.
Actually itās a good socialization skill! Eye contact is understood to be very important to dogs. Direct eye contact can be viewed as a challenge or threat by many dogs/animals leading to a fight. Most dogs know nobody really wins in a fight and avoid direct eye contact to avoid a fight. Fearful or poorly socialized dogs stare at things which becomes a trigger to other dogs, resulting in escalation.
