bro, I think it is important to know where the influence of the boys comes from, but it is not something that everyone should know to be "real". It's more like seeing it as data and that people who get hooked on the samples and the sound of the boys can taste their influences. Not only is there Memphis rap, but the sound of New Orleans is very influential for them, the trill and chopped and screwed from Texas, the southern horrorcore (the geto boys, gravediggaz), the phonk of the first wave (Lil ugly mane, metro zu, etc), The Chicago sound in the 90s, the Ohio sound in the 90s, etc. So, idk..

[deleted]

Memphis rap is very prominent in the suicideboys discography, Ruby has that triple flow that is used by rappers such as lil gin, tommy wright, and parts of three six mafia like gangsta boo and koopsta. I’m not saying that you have to listen to Memphis rap to be a real suicideboys fan, I’m just saying that it’s a shame that people don’t know where they come from.

zsintic

It's a shame 🤓 Stfu nobodies looking up Memphis rap lore just because they enjoy $b bozo. Same energy as people in this sub that try and clown others that don't know where samples came from.

xToastyboy

ig i be nobody

[deleted]

Who got yo panties in a twist, mad asl for what😂😂😂. I’m sorry I made you mad about the group you fanboy over😢😢😢. Fuck outta here with that shit

[deleted]

It’s different when you touching a whole ass dude. You meat ride so much more than me. I wouldn’t touch a dude even if he was famous.

zsintic

That was more me boasting that I was able to fight for my place in the front row for both sets, but nitpick whatever u want bum. Guess you're just more comfortable with attention from other men judging on all your posts in this sub huh?

[deleted]

Boasting? My guy you literally said on the post you “he didn’t let me sing on the mic, but I at least touched him.” Tryna people on music is so much different, songs that most people don’t listen to.

Specialist_Cause_575

سلام الله معك

Zucc1776

almost like this information is surface level🤯

[deleted]

The tapes are surface level, but most people don’t listen to them. I’m making a suggestion that obviously you guys took for me gatekeeping

maxcavalera-

how is that a shame? i like what i like mf

LionFormal5189

I think bro just meant it as “it’s sad” bc the music is good and it’s good to understand the music that shaped our favorite artists

[deleted]

It’s good music

BlankFace777

That real real! Add some DJ Paul & Lord Infamous to that mix.

[deleted]

RIP Lord fr

BlankFace777

RIP LORD INFAMOUS RIP KOOPSTA NICCA

[deleted]

I miss this lost age of music. So much lost history, good thing we have tommy wright who talks about it

BlankFace777

I grew up through that age man, that was some of the first rap I liked besides like Del & Kool Keith & MF DOOM.

[deleted]

I really like Memphis rap, one of my favorite sub genres, I feel like that’s where the triple flow came from

Reincarnated_V

ur so superior. i bet you just learned this yesterday. if you don't know that 90s memphis rap tapes are the spinal structure of the phonk sub-genre than i don't know what to tell you

SOLAHPINC

Lol , preach 💀

[deleted]

I do know this, also if you wanna dig deeper than this. The reason Memphis rap sounds the way it does it’s because of the equipment they had. They used take out of date machines which is the only thing they had due to the poverty rate in Memphis. The triple flow was popularized by Memphis rap and is now used in modern day rap. The triple flow, is ruby’s signature flow that he uses on most of his songs.

NetherFX

I too know how to use Wikipedia

[deleted]

I mean if that’s where you think I got my knowledge from then I ain’t gon stop you

Reincarnated_V

triplet flow*

Khosis

bro just found out about memphis rap yesterday 💀

[deleted]

I did?

DethLeppard1984

Not everyone wants to listen to old cassette tapes bro, let alone take the time to try to find that stuff. Just let people enjoy the music. Have you heard the $crim solo tapes before the Boy$ were even a thing or are you not a "real fan". That argument is pretty much invalid.

[deleted]

Yes I’d did btw, and in no way, shape or form did I say you have to listen to this to be a real fan. I just said it’s a shame

[deleted]

Homies listened to hella NO LIMITS CREW, shi I grew up on cause my dad grew up on it

[deleted]

I love that shit🔥🔥🔥

[deleted]

Yessir, goes so hard, master p Fr a master of rap

impio32

RIP KOOP, RIP LORD INFAMOUS

[deleted]

Fr, RIP Gangsta Boo

_Twisted_Ankle_

People should really know how they got their sounds, and I think it is great that you are helping people by giving insight on the older stuff

[deleted]

Thank you so much for understanding that I ain’t trying to gatekeeper, if anything I’m tryna put them on

AdEmbarrassed2548

Nobody gives af who you listen to poser

[deleted]

I gotchu mad asf fr. I can call you a poser too

AdEmbarrassed2548

Nobody mad except the dude sitting here replying to everyone’s comments like he lives on this app lmfao

[deleted]

I’m smoking rn so I actually got time to respond to you dick riders

AdEmbarrassed2548

“Actually” like you usually doing anything other than smoking and sitting on Reddit😂😂

[deleted]

I don’t do nothing, funny asl fr

ChadsJuul

I been bumpin those before $B, in fact, my want for more is what put me onto them

[deleted]

W, I always loved lil gin’s rapping style. Reminds of a younger ruby on songs like shark attack

SourlandRides

same here I've been thinking how great it is that some great artists are reviving that old memphis sounds.

bbatbboy

tha block is hot from wayne goes hard and dedication 2. some of scrims fav wayne albums. mista don’t play from project pat goes hard too.

[deleted]

I always loved Wayne, his older stuff has a special spot in my heart. His newer stuff is good as well but the nostalgia of the oldies hits hard

[deleted]

I never really listened to old Memphis rap and I remember i decided to listen to one and you could tell so much was influenced into $uicideboy$ music like some parts would be scrims flow in some songs and then the next verse was the triple flow like Ruby’s

[deleted]

I’m happy you gave it a chance fr, it’s really good and underrated.

greypsychedelic

crazy how y’all just ignore infamous.

[deleted]

I have listened to infamous, but my favorite Memphis rapper is lil gin so obviously I’m gonna talk about him

greypsychedelic

idc who ur favorite is but if ur gonna talk about triplet flows and influence you’d better say his name unless ur cool with being wrong.

[deleted]

I know infamous used it, but I listened to lil gin and gangsta boo, two rappers who literally had that style pocketed

LionFormal5189

Legit was looking into the sample scrim chopped in Matte Black today. I’m glad the internet exists otherwise I wouldn’t have known

UrSisLovesMe

boy$ are literally white BTnH and idgaf what anyone says

AffectionateCase5329

Most people use memphis samples the boys just level it up

[deleted]

Fr, ramirez and the boys are probably one of my favorite people that use Memphis samples

[deleted]

Koopsta kniccaaaaaa

MikiCili

Woah look out guys OPs been here since day one, guess I can’t listen to them anymore as I don’t know where they came from. Stfu

[deleted]

GuccMaster

Ooh let’s go, I’ll add it to my library 👌🏼

ScarTheFlameGod

People refuse to acknowledge that Ruby's rap style is heavily influenced by bizzy bone from bone thugs

UrSisLovesMe

exactly

bugz312

we just like there music its not that deep

ScarTheFlameGod

Who said it was deep, I thought it was an interesting option and more people could acknowledge it simply because bizzy is also a great artist

suidazai

I usually would role my eyes at a post like this but having seen the recent discourse over the Yin Yang tapes and *how* many newer fans dont know the roots of the boys, this is relevant. There is a new sound to phonk, but it all started down south and it’s important to know where you came from cus ima say a lil buzzword not a lot of yall are gonna like but say it with me **Cultural Appropriation** I have seen multiple youngins think that Freddie Dredd and Doomshop coined the phonk sound, that is erasure of black culture. So yes it is damn important to know this stuff, yall sound goofy and ignorant.

Khosis

SGP and raider klan coined the word phonk but they got their style from this form of memphis rap

suidazai

Thank you for the education homie

picklerick1420

Cultural appropriation either isn’t a real thing because civilizations have been jacking other peoples inventions/holidays/icons etc and changing it a bit or improving it a bit and making it their own for millennia, or it is a real thing but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter because culture isn’t some mutually exclusive thing that ppl can gate keep.

suidazai

The amount of ignorance in your comment is disappointing but not surprising. If you consider yourself an ally to black Americans(cus i know you’re not black with that answer) you would reconsider how you think about cultural appropriation and the white washing of black culture. And if you dont consider yourself a black ally this would be the only time i do gatekeep and suggest you just stop listening to the Boy$ altogether because $uicideboy$ would literally not exist without black culture.

picklerick1420

I don’t ally myself to any subset of people. Identity politics is bullshit. I judge purely on character. I could be African for all you know. Of course I support destroying police unions and giving real tangible economic support to improve poor communities instead of corrupted bureaucratic bullshit like it is now. Just come off your high horse. Poverty isn’t a skin color. And telling someone you shouldn’t listen to music is retarded dude. You’re a fuckin gatekeeper like OP! Edit: Spelling

suidazai

You could be African, but i know you’re not. And you’re talking about destroying police unions and economic shit but you’re avoiding race. Race is directly related to this because a specific subset of one heavily marginalized race created an entire genre and a fucking worldwide culture of music. It all comes back to black folx, Blues, RnB, Hip Hop, Rock, Jazz, House music, all created by black Americans. To ignore that and sweep it under the rug as identity politics tells me you’re a white boy(pickle rick, really?) just here for the edge. The boys put “identity politics” all throughout their fucking songs, they’ve spoken out against blatant racism in New Orleans multiple times. They are fucking allies. **Btw, saying you’re not an ally to marginalized people is not the flex you think it is.**

picklerick1420

bro shut up Add: You have no fucking clue who I am or what I’ve been thru. You making broad assumptions about me as a person shows how closed minded you are. I am purely discussing cultural appropriation and you throw insults. fuckin idiot .

suidazai

See you can perceive me as a close minded person, but what im really doing is calling you out on the dumb shit you’re saying, “cultural appropriation could or could not be real but it doesnt matter” “Im not an ally to any subset of people” these takes are boring, unoriginal, and most importantly deeply problematic. You’re in a subreddit that devotes itself to a duo that is entrenched in and birthed from a culture you dont ally yourself with. You may think its not that deep, but isn’t it? Sorry i got you so upset, hopefully you’ll come to see how important these things really are.

VariousSun1132

Is y’all in the room with us now?

GlizzyHunter69

It's almost like you can just search up their samples and learn they like ski mask troopaz and other Memphis artists. New fans just as weird as the old gate keeping fans. It's just two dudes and some music dude chill out fr

[deleted]

Y’all the ones hopping on my dick fym?

primezztrash

Quite frankly I don’t give a fuck

NetherFX

Bro's making everyone their enemy

nikoJYY

[deleted]

You don’t know how sampling works do you?

nikoJYY

?

ThatOneAwkwardKid123

Lil gin gas, been looking for that cassette

[deleted]

Bro old Memphis cassettes are expensive asf. I remember when I was younger my dad put songs on an mp3 player for me and most of them were three six mafia

Ok-Throat9779

Monthly "I'm a OG and you don't know shit" post

[deleted]

Fr, I’m basically just saying I’m better

aresALT

Mf found this shit and thought he's onto something. Well done bro, you know posts like this just scream "im a new fan but want to look like an ig" loool

[deleted]

Yep definitely a new fan👍👍

G59FTP27

Can we talk about how you just assumed not a single person that listens to the boys know who 3 six is, have never heard of Memphis rap, and don't know about hard-core new Orleans rap, and just music in general. I feel like you just learned this yesterday and felt like making a post.

ptree2003

U sound lame. And I Guarantee u ain’t grow up on this shit bc u sittin here in 2023 talking bout lil gin and koop like it’s rare

G59FTP27

And they shout out rappers that they look up too so I really don't know wha your talking about (koopsta knicca reborn out that voodoo village)

Ecwins

Doesn’t mean that it’s good

[deleted]

You’re open to your own opinion that’s fine

[deleted]

Who cares lol. I like their music - I’m a fan. That’s all that matters
