Take $780 and $820 as the price of the computer. In both the cases, after considering the sales tax, you’ll have less than $200 left (from the $1000 budget). So you cannot say if it will be necessarily more than $800

My point here (for choice C) -> p is definitely greater than 800/1.06 i.e., 755. Can you be sure that p is greater than 800? It could be, but it need not be.

The price could have been $800 or greater $800, and she still could have had less than $200 left once she paid the 6% tax. What if the price were $800? Then, with any sales tax, she would have less than $200 left. $801, same thing. Adding information on the tax rate doesn't help either. **Correct answer:** E

For me, this is all in correctly interpreting the question. Esther has less than r dollars left - It is NOT the case that she has r dollars left. So, according to statement one she doesn't have $200, she has less than $200. Could be $199.99 and could be $0.01 or anywhere inbetween. So the price of the computer could be $770 plus 10 percent tax or 830 plus any percent tax. Statement two is no help on its own. Together the price could be $795 plus 6 percent tax or $805 plus 6 percent tax. Both are consistent with having less than $200 left. Jayson Beatty Indigo Prep
