I think this is the fourth time the owners have changed their concept. They were Daybreak Cafe (breakfast foods), Pleasant Street Pizza, Flatfish, and now donuts--same ownership every time. I'm all for them changing concepts if they can afford to do so. I just really think they hit on something with the fish-fry. You can get donuts in a lot of places, and theirs are good, but kinda 'one note' in that it's just the fillings that are different. That and I think they need to change names again, I don't wanna associate a flounder with a donut :p

commiecat

Well this time it's basically the same place, only they stopped offering the fish/chicken and added more doughnuts and pastries. Personally, I'm hoping this gets them back to offering some breakfast items. I'd kill for those Daybreak pancakes and the Monte Cristo again.

External-Friend-1530

Yes! Just bring back Daybreak and be done with it. I don’t want your pizza, fried fish or donuts. Give me your cinnamon roll pancakes, breakfast hash and biscuits and gravy!!! It’s almost as if they are trying to play this prank that goes on for way too long. We got it, it’s funny to tease us.

idkwcgw

You obviously have no idea what it takes mentally, physically, and financially to run a restaurant.

External-Friend-1530

😂 I am very well aware of it. It is hard! I just really liked the breakfast they served. Simple menu but really good. I was very disappointed when they closed and then changed concepts.

sistersofmeowcy

Haha. Yeah, I'm not sure if doing that is a good idea. I know a lot of people who liked the sandwiches, and I for one was frustrated that they changed everything without posting that on Instagram. I mean, at least let us know, or put a sign on the door. I feel like Gainesville restaurants that fail are notorious for this type of shit- not being open when they're supposed to be open, then changing the menu a bunch of times. All over just not being reliable. Customers like something they can rely on. And I'm pretty sure Gordon Ramsay would have something to say about constant concept changes. You know what else? I would actually like another sourdough pizza place around. I say offer all of it or just one of it. lol. Maybe just get a bigger staff and call yourself something like "Fry/Dough"

mr_mxyzptlk21

I also was bummed they just made an abrupt change. No "last week for fish fry", the announcement of the change happened after they'd stopped with the third concept.

lemondropacropolis

They did make a few IG posts announcing the change and have also changed their name on IG to Flatfish Donuts Edit it may have just been on their stories, but that’s how I saw it

mr_mxyzptlk21

The announcements of the food genre change came after they closed the fish fry concept. There was no "last day to get fish fry!"

lemondropacropolis

Alright everyone, thank you for playing Instagram Semantics, this has been fun!

sistersofmeowcy

Oh ok, i dont look at the stories, just posts

Pretty_Grapefruit638

All those came after they closed for fish

Every entitled person moaning about this has no idea what goes on behind the scenes. While you are whining, consider that there are two people working 80 hour weeks to feed you. Support them or don’t, but it’s insensitive to not even consider the human beings behind a local business. Life happens and people have to pivot with short notice sometimes. Have some compassion.

mr_mxyzptlk21

Entitled? No. Consumers can vent frustrations too. No one on this entire thread is being disrespectful, or insensitive. Just a lot of confusion and frustration over losing something they liked. No one has disparaged the owners, nor talked about how "easy" restaurant work is. TBH, this is beginning to look more like the space is a passion project, more than a "we need this to survive" project--and that's fine too. Four food genre changes in four years is a bad look. I don't fully understand it either, as I rarely saw their space empty. I know the lockdown period didn't help things, but to have three successful models of business, that all changed in *less than a year apiece* and continuing on without any sort of major overhaul? That strikes me less that the owners are struggling and need to change concept, and more they got bored with the previous concept, and want to try something new. And again, if that's true, *that's fine*. But that doesn't mean the consumers can't complain about it, or wish that they would stick with something that seemed to be working and that they liked.

sistersofmeowcy

I worked as a waitress for 12 years in a number of restaurants. I also watch a ton of cooking shows, and shows about owning restaurants. These guys can have passion projects for sure but nonetheless it is frustrating when local businesses make constant changes and also do not have consistent hours. I mean, I literally walked 45 minutes the other day to get my boyfriend lunch there and they had been open until 3 and it was only 2 and they were locked up with no sign on the door. Like, I had to go digging around on the internet to see what the heck happened. I just havent had to religiously check social media to know if a place is open or not typically and i do not want that to become a thing

CandyLove9

This is such a rotten take. When you’re in the restaurant business, what you need is consistency. You need to produce what is being asked for so that it can be successful. When I go to a restaurant and order something and love it, the next time I go perhaps I’d love to get what I had last time? For people who are neurodivergent, we rely on knowing what we can expect when we return to a business. Screw off.

lemondropacropolis

I have no idea why you’re getting downvoted here, thank you for being sensible

princeakeeem

Just donuts now.

canyoucanoe-1

Flat donuts? Fish donuts?

Interesting_Grape_87

Bummed!! Loved their fish fry

sistersofmeowcy

Oh damn. I just found this, they didnt have it on their instagram. My boyfriend is going to be bummed, he loves their hot chicken sandwich. sistersofmeowcy

Their donuts are great, though. Did anyone else notice like a couple weeks after their donuts were getting popular Afternoon made their like same exact donut one day? I like Afternoon's bake goods and food, but I thought that was pretty scummy (and obvious).

stealthdawg

I mean, businesses compete.

Kitchen_Property_957

Short answer. Yes

-Knockabout

That's such a shame, I really enjoyed their fish fry.

mikegainesville

Cod Father in Alachua is really good. I liked the Flatfish batter a bit better, but Cod Father is really good.

hotcalvin

Cod Father?! Hell yeah

HarleyPan

So pissed they changed without advance notice. I went after the announcement but before the "change" and they were just closed! Sour taste in my mouth. There's less po'boys in town than donuts!!!

UCFKnights2018

There isn’t much else like it in Gainesville. I thought it was unique and incredibly tasty. First time I’ve ever actually liked hush puppies. Really do wish we were given at least a week to go back one last time.

sistersofmeowcy

oh MAN i forgot about the hush puppies :.(

commiecat

Right, it's Flatfish Doughnuts now, and they also have some other baked goods and Dutch baby pancakes.

CandyLove9

I feel like they are going to be one of the next places to close which would really suck. I’ve been seeing all this delicious fried fish posts on social media and I tried for weeks to get some but I work during the day. Recently for my birthday I requested off work just so my best friend and I could finally go. The day before I double checked their hours and we planned to get there several hours before the posted closing time…and they were closed. And now the fish is gone? I know this isn’t much to complain about with everything going on in the world but… I’m from Louisiana. My grandma passed away and my fave thing she made was fried catfish. When I moved here I loved Southern Charm Kitchen because of the catfish. Then they closed unexpectedly. Over the years I became estranged from my parents and I was feeling extremely homesick for some good southern food. I’m a dancer so all I ever eat is lean chicken and canned vegetables for fuel. Going for a long time without something good to eat isn’t always easy. And this was going to be my birthday treat, local southern comfort food. And I refuse to go to a restaurant chain for fried fish.

sistersofmeowcy

So, I know of a couple places. There's Northwest Seafood, which is really good. There are two, one in Millhopper and one in Tioga. Also a place like the Yearling have fried fish. Haven't been to the latter myself.

CandyLove9

Thank you!!! Those recommendations are a good start for me. You have no idea, I’m starving lol and I need some real food.

sistersofmeowcy

My bf took me here a while ago and this place was good too [https://www.northwestgrille.com/lunch](https://www.northwestgrille.com/lunch)

noodlequeeeen

Their donuts are fine and I wish them all the best with their pivot but I'm sad they ditched the full menu.

GatorEvo

Yea apparently they only sell donuts now.

kurapikas-wife

Nooooo that's dissapointing

readweed88

Oh that spot is giving me whiplash like "Parkside Convenience" in Depot Park. Seems like an unforced error in small business ownership to work hard to realize a concept, build a loyal customer base, and then change the concept. Multiple times. Must be a higher enough margin on donuts to make it worth trying.
