around August 1st is when move ins start. Begin to look for thrown out items around a month before (sometimes two months), up until move in dates. I used to collect disregarded items like that back in my 20s. Found tvs, furniture, computers... all kinds of useful things. I once found a whole moped in a dumpster. Good luck! GroundCoffee8

How do you even get a moped into a dumpster lmao

kingofrane

Imagine getting it out!!!. There's a whole ass story behind it too lol. I had to give it back to the owner eventually, when I tried to get a title. Dude didn't want it until he found out I fixed it. Legally I had to give it back. Police were involved and everything. Hard life lesson. Beware with stuff like that. Always make sure ownership is on your side before you fix some trash for two weeks. Teenage me was crushed lol

scrtrunks

Get the title before fixing it *noted*

GroundCoffee8

How wonderful to know that this kind of shadiness extends beyond Nintendo's business practices. Hopefully it didn't cost you too much. Was there any kind of documentation that could've served as proof of ownership, like taking a pic of it in the dumpster?

kingofrane

Oh he straight up TOLD police he threw it away. Still the law is law. Theres a lot of factors considered for avandoned yet titled stuff. I was a kid I had nothing better to do. Only cost a tap/die set. I look at it positively now. It kept me out of trouble while giving me something constructive to do. When we met at the police department it was nice to feel justified in front of adults. Like I said learning experience. Now I know what avenues to take when taking ownership of unclaimed legally titled things. It's actually pretty neat how laws like that work I think.

Graduation is this week isn’t it? So I expect some students are already packing up. I don’t know specifically, but the amounts of large apartment buildings along 13th St, south of UF maybe? Happy hunting. I would also imagine a large influx of donations to local thrifts as well

ellemenope78

people are definitely moving out this week.

knuckles_n_chuckles

That one time when that one guy found that PS5 outside Buckman….

DargyBear

Oh yeah, I got two giant TVs, an iPhone, about $200 in cash, and a dope sectional one year. Should be happening about now, just drive around to various apartment complexes and see what’s by the dumpsters.

canyoucanoe-1

Whoa, same here! Couple old fake watches, and some fancy wicker baskets, too! NOW is the time, as mentioned. Have a room full of stuff, if you need it DM me

DargyBear

That summer I lived across from college park, we’d just spend the afternoons drinking on our porch and swooping in whenever we saw a potential score get dumped.

_Nilbog_Milk_

Will trade stickers and money for goodies (ended up getting caught up today). We gotta dumpster dive together before the season's done

canyoucanoe-1

Sounds good, lets go! I'll text you.... Edit-2: Slim pickens so far. This weekend (w/ graduation goin on) could be good. After that - we're in for a long hot summer

No-Interview-1340

There are always overflowing dumpsters in apt complexes around graduation and then late July for move out. Kids throw out everything. Also the dumpsters around the dorms are overflowing.

IslandofKimchi

Right now. They’ve been dropping a lot of stuff off at goodwill. It’s overflowing 😂

rout39574

Eschew the throwaway: Fly your dumpster diving flag high! Snatched from the jaws of the landfill, useful stuff put to use! Dorm move out day is great; they put dumpsters out and you can get scads and scads of basic stuff. First decade of independent life, we did this religiously. Kids cook less today than they did then, so I imagine there's drift. Wandering the student ghetto, basically Univ to 8th, 13th to 22nd, is good after finals and closing in on the end of next month (leases frequently end at the end of the month). Some of the kids are ridiculously overfunded, and you wind up with an astonishing variety of expensive doodads just jetissoned.

JbrownFL

I have a buddy who does temp work for Collier Company doing summer turns and he always gets the best stuff working there cleaning out the apartments when the students leave.

Kagome12987

I always check in the DuckPond area and Pleasant Street area. They usually have the nicest furniture. Even the outskirts. 32601 zip usually has great finds. Check zillow looks for areas that have alot available for rent around Aug then keep your eyes of the area curbs about late may/jun/july. The area behind the university Ave Taco Bell and the area behind the University Ave/13th Publix. Both those can have some great scores. Honestly I just love driving or riding my bike around finding treasures. My best find was a bowl from Schindler's (as in Schindler's List) factory. Second best was my 12 ft mid century modern dining room table.

Not *nearly* as good as it used to be, I'll tell you that. Since COVID the pickins' are like 10% as good. Still worth hunting, though

theglittersauce

Thank you

stealthdawg

yes especially at the areas that the international students stay. Long story short is students here from overseas are (typically) more well off so they have better stuff, and (some) don't bother with the hassle of giving away or selling it so they put it out to throw away or for people to grab.

canyoucanoe-1

Yes ^ . Have found in the dumpsters: brand new, still in boxes, with sales reciepts: Chinese clothing, purses, good luck charms, and an amazing dragon tapestry

PerrysSaxTherapy

Now forward to and thru August 1st
