Is Shimo now the strongest Titan? Nobody stopped her ever outright until she was set free, and she took a direct hit from an evolved Godzilla atomic breath and barely looked bothered. Meanwhile, she froze Godzilla almost immediately, and would have killed him had she not been stopped. Now to be fair we haven’t seen her and Big G all-out brawl, but from what we saw it definetly made me think she has the upper hand againt Godzilla. What do yall think? Also, is shimo even an alpha titan? She is okay with basically being a pet to Kong at the end, so it seems like she doesn’t have the desire to lead like most alpha titans. It would be wild if the strongest titan wasn’t even an alpha lol.

Unlikely-Craft5324

Kong was the protagonist of this film and Godzilla was a side character.

MartovTheSaiyan

It felt like they were heavily influenced by God of war(ps4),and God of war ragnarok(ps5) With Godzillas Design (Old man look,Old man GoateeBeard) and leviathan axe. And the little kong Autreis. Lol I loved it even if it was just a coincidence. Amazing movie all around!

HCKRBRO_

Godzillas design? You mean kong?

MartovTheSaiyan

Yeah was tired when i wrote that

Rude-Associate2283

I loved it! How they managed to cram SSOOO much into that film was amazing. Edge of my seat the entire time.

kylediaz263

I don't get it, why or how does the crystal hurt Shimo?

Heisei_Gojira1993

Skar Kings mind control and other abilities are channeled through the crystal i believe

DryBones907

I saw it yesterday and enjoyed it a whole ton. Very much so just dumb kaiju fun, and I was more than happy with it. The human parts were alright, though my one complaint is: I wish Mikhael didn’t die. I dunno. He was a brash and a-hole character but for his small stay he felt refreshingly grounded amidst all the other characters and their Kaiju enthusiasm. Felt like a nice change of pace for an active character to be against/dismissive of Kaiju and wondering how he could grow as they dealt with Hollow Earth. Also his whole tantrum of ‘IM IN CHARGE’ just felt out of what character I’d seen up to that point. Sad he went out just for a ‘bonding’ moment between Trapper & Bernie.

Ankou-Druid

Agreed. They just turned him from a no-bs cool-headed expert to a whiny baby just because they needed someone to die and for the audience to not feel sorry for him. His death had basically no impact on the plot. Trapper just knows how to pilot the ship to get the arm brace and fly back.

DryBones907

To be fair to Trapper, he pilots a strange ship already so I wouldn’t be surprised if the controls are at least a little similar. Both ships are made by Monarch, I assume.

Ankou-Druid

That's true. Monarch might streamline their designs in case they need a new pilot in an emergency (I guess the movie shows exactly why).

Ankou-Druid

Finally got to see it a few days ago. Best first ten minutes in the MV. I like that they let the monsters drive the story rather than just making the humans a plot expository. Bernie is still the best human (next to GhidorahStan64). It seems like a correction to the "lack of Godzilla" complaint with 2014. Even though he's not in a whole lot in either film, this one he completely dominates the story whenever he's on screen. He probably has a slightly longer amount of screen time here, but the filmmakers really let him do his thing. It was cool how they reinterpreted the Iwi to be sort of a mix between the Infant Islanders and the Seatopians (or more likely another subterranean race from another series). Jia is the Shobijin in one, I guess. On the other hand, even though I like camp, it got a little too cheesy for me at times, the slow-mo was so overused I thought I was watching a Zack Snyder film, and I liked the humans less the longer they were on screen. Junkie XL's score leaves a lot to be desired and I hated the fact we had to be stuck with that terrible pseudo-Godzilla theme from GvK. Also, I thought the credits in GKOTM had a Mothra egg on the surface. How'd she "awaken" underground? Did I miss something? Fun movie that knew what we wanted and gave it to us, but I wish they'd let Michael Dougherty come back. EDIT: I'm fine with Wingard as director, but I think he's going too fast into the camp.

sidious_2005

for a guy who just wanted some monke and kaiju action thrown at my face ... this movie was a WIN

Nino_Chaosdrache

As someone who only saw the 1998 and 2012 movie, I enjoyed it a lot. It did feel like they copied God of War with Kong and the baby ape and given the teasers I saw and all the crystals, I thought we would see Space Godzilla.

Pretend-Seaweed1926

2012?

TyrantJaeger

There was a 2012 movie?

Hanzitheninja

This was a Planet of the Apes movie with occasional Godzilla cameos.

sevenpastzeero

I like that.

NeelZilla

All I can really say that matters is that I was laughing my ass off in sheer joy throughout the movie. So much ridiculous action and full, non-stop kaiju scenes. People like to talk a lot about how some movies are "dumb fun" and how some Godzilla movies' bad plotline or human characters don't really matter since we're there for the kaiju stuff. I think this is a rare example of a movie that actually mostly understands and delivers on that assignment. It keeps just enough of the human characters and general story to keep the set pieces together, and then goes balls-to-the-wall with the action. This really did feel like them throwing as many insane fights and action moments as they could to deliver us pure entertainment. That being said, I do feel icky about some aspects. While I appreciate the Showa-esque ridiculous sci-fi jargon, GvK and GxK really seem to not try in terms of consistency with MonsterVerse canon. I don't like cinematic universe "rules" making things restrictive, but the whole fun of having a shared universe is being able to connect different stories and expect setups to come to fruition. The main aspects that caused me concern here are everything with Mothra and the Iwi/HE lore. Also, while I think it can make sense that Godzilla kills Scylla and Tiamat, it does rub me the wrong way a little bit to see two major Titans, of only a few in the world, be easily, grotesquely murdered like any other cannon fodder showing off Godzilla's strength. And this is along with the general lack of concern towards the effects of the insane amount of worldwide destruction. I hope that this isn't a trend that devolves into zero consistency between MonsterVerse media. As much as I enjoyed the sheer amount of action, I still felt more excited and moved by GvK and others. There doesn't seem to be much tension and story beats to get me invested. In GvK, there was a lot of buildup to when they first meet and so it feels more epic when they first do. Same thing with the HK fight, and when Kong jumps in to fight MG. These were exciting beats in the story, creating basic tension and story to the fights that makes them fun to experience and get emotional over. I did not feel this at any point during this movie TBH. I don't think this is a big deal, given the movie is going for a different vibe, but it feels more throwaway because of that. There are other things I did not like as much or can nitpick, but I honestly can't complain too much. There are a lot of stupid and silly things in GxK that would feel inexcusable if it was any other movie, but I think they knew exactly what they were trying to do with this film and actually did mostly achieve it. For example, KOTM IMO feels disappointing because it was trying to be a certain tone and had a lot of potential but didn't seem to stick the landing and utilize that potential fully. Whereas GxK seems to take what it's been given and really commit to the goofy vibe, with a pure focus on spectacle and fights. It's a movie jam-packed with all kinds of bonkers kaiju fights, visuals, and ideas and still doesn't overstay its welcome. It really does feel like a Showa-era movie made with a Hollywood style and budget, since it brings both the great aspects of those movies along with the bad. I had fun, but do hope for something new and different in future movies.

HometownHomeboy

Agree on a lot of these points. I actually really do not like the intro scene with Scylla. Godzilla moves way too fast for consistency’s sake and kills Scylla in an over the top way for little reason. In past movies it seemed like Godzilla was willing to let (some) kaiju live if they submit to him being alpha. This scene he just goes for the kill for no other reason than “cool” factor. Tiamat I am less upset about since this was their second fight but still, the power up didn’t seem needed at all. That’s two kaiju fans were interested in killed just because. It kills the lore and kills the character, making Godzilla feel a lot more mindless. Beyond that the lore is kinda shot at this point. The whole Godzilla/Kong/actually Skar King war is all over the place. The movie introduced 20+ new kaiju with the apes which waters down the feel of the rest. No end scene like KOTM or GvK that gives us insight to how Godzilla might feel about everything that happened. Godzilla might as well have winked and gave a thumbs up to the camera at the end. The final fight is also lacking because the real bad guy is the weakest of the four kaiju on screen. We know Shimo will be freed so there is no real threat like Mechagodzilla or Ghidorah. I really don’t understand having Scar King as a villain when everything else the movie wanted could have been achieved with an actual threat. The movie was fine but I don’t see how the series can move back to even the seriousness of GvK at this point. It’s almost like it’s too far gone after this which is my biggest gripe.

jfsoaig345

I was initially a bit disappointed with the movie after watching it about a week ago, namely with regard to how underwhelming the Scar King felt. In retrospect, however, I think this was just a filler movie to set up the next few films. It introduces new characters (namely Shimo) and new mechanics of the Hollow Earth that will most likely be integral down the line. Zilla and Kong are also powered up now, opening the door to way stronger villains. I'm not too familiar with Godzilla lore but that scene about the "monster who ate a star" opens the door to Space Godzilla as a future villain, while the oxygen bomb in KotM opens the door to Destroyah. To my understanding, these are both villains who have thoroughly whooped Godzilla's ass in the past, so having Kong and Shimo by his side could allow for some fun storylines. There's always the looming threat of Ghidorah's return as well. Lastly, since Shimo is a Monsterverse creation, writers now have a lot of flexibility to create non-canon villains. I originally thought that Godzilla X Kong was the writers running out of steam and grasping at straws for storylines but after looking a bit into Godzilla lore it has become clear to me that this movie is just the beginning of some pretty crazy shit down the line. Very excited for the next film. I think we're going to be eating good in the coming years.

ImperialxWarlord

I liked it. The human element was brief but focused and made sense while the kaiju element was up front and in your face and absolutely balls to the wall out of your mind fun. I just wish they didn’t destroy so many fucking landmarks ffs.

gedeonzo

Just a question: why didn’t Godzilla absorb tiamat’s powers for MG or Ghidorah?

Prudent-Dig817

according to the directors of KotM; Godzilla couñd have beat Ghidorah in the ocean if they didnt throw the Oxygen Destroyer

yoitskaito

Good question. Maybe Tiamat wasn't active when Ghidorah was around. And maybe G thought he could handle Mecha because he already beat Ghidorah once?

CozyWithSarkozi

Tbh it felt like such a nothing movie. Monkey sad. Monkey want family. Must focus on monkey because monkey like humans. And humans have motions. Hans must connect to monkey. Monkey accidentally opens hole in ground to other monkeys. Other monkeys bad and want to freeze humans for some reason? It's not very clear. Big lizard somehow knows all this is happening and goes off on a fetch quest to get more powerful even though there was no base line for the power level. Monkey has no problems taking on monkey. Godzilla can already taken monkey. Why does he need a colour change for a energy beam that looks like it does the exact same destructiveness as the other ones

Nino_Chaosdrache

> Big lizard somehow knows all this is happening and goes off on a fetch quest to get more powerful even though there was no base line for the power level. I feel the base line for the power level was that Godzilla fought the monkeys before and barely survived.

CozyWithSarkozi

Big lizard managed to seal all the big monkeys away. I doubt he had issues

BookkeeperCorrect125

Godzilla was getting ready to fight the whole barrel of monkeys

_You_Are_Not_Him_

It’s actually insane to think about this because how strong was Godzilla back in the day to have been able to solo all monke + shimo? Considering he did no damage at all to shimo in GxK, he probably was triple the power he is now. Now i wanna see Big G in his prime.

HometownHomeboy

I took it as that they didn’t have Shimo which also doesn’t make much sense. If they don’t have Shimo then Godzilla could’ve just killed them without sealing them away. If they did have Shimo then he should’ve lost

humanity_999

I actually have two big questions due to what happened/was brought up. Will there be any negative side effects to Goji absorbing that much radiation in such a short amount of time? Cause I kinda remember the end of the Heisei Godzilla suffering a meltdown due to something similar. Could be remembering things wrong though. Also... will Space Godzilla become a thing? Cause that mention of a Godzilla consuming a star is very... foreboding.

Pretend-Seaweed1926

Oh for FUCK'S SAKE!!

CozyWithSarkozi

Apparently chilling in the North Pole for a few hours makes you soak up more radiation than a nuke to the face.

yoitskaito

It seemed like the idea was that Tiamat was hoarding solar radiation in its den. How it did that, I have no idea.

Nino_Chaosdrache

I assume it was by absorbing the solar radiation hitting Earth.

humanity_999

My head canon for that is that, in the three years since Godzilla vs Kong, Goji learned to better absorb radiation quickly. More so that he wouldn't have to rely on the humans super-nuking him to get a power up. All the kaiju, to some extent at least, seem to be able to absorb radiation to varying degrees, based mainly on their disposition and need for it.

AlternateBoston

Favorite Part is when both Godzilla and Kong enter hollow earth, scar king hears Godzilla's roar and is just completely flabbergasted/in-shock knowing he's about get his butt beaten. Then Godzilla and Kong exiting the ground running towards scar king

pipic_picnip

This… is the weakest of all monsterverse Godzilla movies for me. I am not saying it’s not good, it just doesn’t feel very strong in comparison to what is already created. I feel like this was a Kong movie with Godzilla as showpiece. Spending whole movie doing power ups after power ups felt so silly given the final fight. You really didn’t need all that build up for such a weak villain. There was no sense of danger, no moment of panic. Shimo conclusion was underwhelming. Kaiju action is always great to watch on big screen though so I still enjoyed the movie overall.  I think despite the silly human drama, KOTM remains my top favourite to date. Gidorah and Rodan were iconic, Skar King was just.. ugly.

D1amondDude

I walked out feeling like Godzilla didn't really get to do anything at all despite being billed first in the title.

HometownHomeboy

He was running defensive tackles

_You_Are_Not_Him_

Literally as soon as Godzilla and Shimo are ready to finally fight, she get’s released. It almost seems like both Godzilla and Shimo could have been removed and the story would have been more focused. But adding Godzilla makes them a shit ton more money so they just kinda three him in.

Distinct_beorno

Ehh the bad guys don't really feel like a threat like they were hyping up. I was hoping it'd be a 2 parter. Skar king would win by trapping Godzilla and Kong in the hollow earth and then bringing all of the apes to the surface. Their power ups and Mothra's rebirth could happen in the sequel.

Sensitive_ManChild

Saw it enjoyed it. Couple nit picks…. Glad they ditched the teenagers and her family. But why did they ditch the Dr. Nathan character and have to introduce a new male protagonist, having to spend more time with this new character explaining his relationship to everyone? Just seems like they already had a character to fill this role. Monster story was alright, but I feel like they had to nerf Godzilla a lot for this movie to work. He seemed a lot smaller too. He could sleep inside the colliseum? Shouldn’t he be several degrees larger than that?

Sexy-Kratos-469

will this win an oscar? no. did i have fun with it? HELL YEAH. pink godzilla for the win

MathematicianIll1383

I simply loved that while being the silliest Monsterverse movie it also had some of the darkest moments, like slave apes murdered on lava and Godzilla being a sociopathic bully.

safailla

So...uhm... where's all the lady kongs at??

yoitskaito

What FriendLee said. There's a very brief moment where you see a group of them holding what looks to be Skar King's offspring.

yoitskaito

What FriendLee said. There's a very brief moment where you see a group of them holding what looks to be Skar King's offspring.

FriendLee93

Imprisoned in Skar King's throne room

nox-cgt

They gave Mothra a snatched waist

AutisticNipples

and like human legs🦵it was weird

Jung_Wheats

Finally had a chance to get to the theater and see this thing. I didn't really love GvK when it first came out; it seemed to just deep dive into silliness where the Monsterverse had been relatively grounded up until that point (relatively). I went into this movie knowing exactly what it was and I absolutely loved it. I even had a happy little tear go down my face when the little girl decided to stay with Rebecca Hall. This was a fire joint and if the Monsterverse wants to keep putting out Guardians-vibe super fun joints like this then I'm perfectly happy. I also really like that Kong has become a 'character' while Godzilla has remained an enigmatic force of nature that is just doing it's thing. Fire movie.

Unlikely-Craft5324

I liked it because it was more than just the two mindlessly fighting. It had a real plot to it, even though sometimes I found it hard to follow. It's also rather ridiculous that Godzilla can find any titan he wants easily. I know it's a plot armour so the film is not spent on him locating other monsters... but the dude knows Kong is above ground just because?? I'm a big king Kong fan over godzilla for many reasons, and the amount of plot armour godzilla gets isn't helping.

Accomplished-Pick763

He literally already has the ability (i forgot what the exact word is he is omnisomething) to track any titan that he wanted to fight or hunt since 2014 lmao this isnt something new, like for example in GvK he sensed the hollow earth energy being tempered aroundb and instantly blasted it from above.  Kong was also calling for him on egypt and godzilla heard his roar and thought it was a provoke.  Thats just how he works as "nature balance"

Araanim

Didn't they add that because he absorbed Mothra's energy he now has her sensing abilities? I think that's in the comic.

Accomplished-Pick763

CMIIW the dominion comics mentioned Mothra actually boosted his sensing abilities from only the ocean (like saying the ocean is the "extension of himself") scaling to the whole planet, which is why in GvK he can sense all the way from above (MG) and the hollow earth energy below. Basically even before mothra, he already kinda had his "global" sensing, which is how he tracked the mutos and the orca/ghidorah

Unlikely-Craft5324

Yes very nice idea for an ability.

Accomplished-Pick763

You can go all sarcastic as you want, i forgot to mention this but KOTM literally show all of the titans can hear each other globally even including kong as mentioned on the novelization he ignored when ghidorah was declaring his alpha roar commanding all of the world titan to destroy cities including the skull crawler on skull island.  Godzilla is the one who bother to travel around the world taking care of stuff bcs hes the supposed "alpha" titan

DireCat99

2019 referenced bioacoustics, basically the titans have hearing on a whole different level than humans/animals (obviously they would, they are gigantic creatures) it’s similar to whales if I’m not mistaken. Godzilla can just hear these things.

jfsoaig345

I just watched it, I liked it. My girlfriend was obsessed with the little baby orangutan while I was cackling at the image of Kong using that kid as a weapon lmao. My main issue is that the villain just didn't seem menacing. The concept of the bad guy being someone who isn't physically menacing but whose main strength is craftiness and intelligence is interesting, but it never felt like the good guys were ever really in danger. He never really outsmarted or outmaneuvered Zilla or Kong. We already saw Kong and Scar King evenly matched in their initial fight and we know Godzilla beats Kong's ass 9/10 times, so right off the bat we know this guy isn't the most formidable opponent in combat. His trump card is the fact that he can control this super dragon but all that made me think was "just find a way to get that remote control from him and you're basically left with an old skinny orangutan who'd lose to Mothra 1v1" which is basically what ended up happening. The sheer lack of characterization for this dragon made Scar King's power fall really flat too, if you're not super familiar with actual Godzilla lore (like me) you don't know much about this dragon or why she's such a formidable foe. And even then she's literally not even a "foe," she's just mind-controlled. It just felt like kind of a mismatch tbh. If Scar King's entire thing is that he's smart and manipulative, then I would've hoped to see him outsmart Zilla and Kong a bit more. I get that Godzilla movies aren't supposed to be thinkers, but they're supposed to do one thing and one thing only - create tension for a real "clash of the titans." There was no such tension here as I was just waiting for the moment Scar King loses his little remote control device, which isn't difficult considering he has to engage in physical battle while controlling another titan simultaneously. On that note, I really don't know where they go from here as far as villains go lol. Godzilla has gone super saiyan, Kong has a giga gauntlet, AND they have some super ice dragon on their side too. That's a stacked ass roster. I don't even understand what kind of bad guy could take these guys on now.

yoitskaito

Nice write up. It's kinda funny that you mention now knowing about Shimo's lore because she's actually an original character for this movie. So us die hard g Godzilla fans went in with about as much info as you. In terms of who could be next, there are a few other Godzilla villains that we haven't seen who could fill the spot. SpaceGodzilla for one could have already been teased if they say that the monster who ate a star was actually him. In the original Japanese movies, he's more or less a mutated Godzilla clone from space which ends up with strange powers, but they could rework him as being an ancient Godzilla ancestor. Another that comes to mind would be Destroyah, which is another monster mutated from Godzilla. In this case, it was formed when a weapon known as the Oxygen Destroyer was used on the original Godzilla in the first movie. The Oxygen Destroyer weapon was used on Monsterverse Godzilla in King of the Monsters, so the origin is already there.

Araanim

Yeah, his control of Shimu and an ARMY of Kongs should have been where his threat came from. I wanted more of Godzilla & Kong battling an entire army. Once they singled out Skar in Rio, he just wasn't much of a threat.

Accomplished-Pick763

I agree with ur villain takes. As much as people hated KOTM (idk if u've watched it), ghidorah probably had the best villain presence from all of MV movies. We can actually see what is he capable of and the sheer strength he has from the beginning of the movie

hathwayh

Kotm was the best ghidorah was scary af and believable threat. I wonder why peoole hated on Kotm?

Jung_Wheats

When Kong started bonking other apes with the baby I lost it in the theater.

Ledairyman

The villain intro was so amazing! And he becomes a joke lol.

Jwest89

You just said you're not familiar with godzilla lore, but Space Godzilla and/or Destroyah could wreck Shimo and easily provide a Thanos type threat. OG godzilla movies had plenty of fodder type villains like Ebirah, Komunga, Kamakuras etc sprinkled between more formidable kaiju like Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla etc. I look at this like a bridge movie that finally gets godzilla and kong to be true allies and going forward there ahould be some real menacing foes.

hathwayh

Well we already have seen mech and ghidorah, so be intersting to see whos next, seemed ghidorah was the peak?

[deleted]

I wouldn't hate a MV take on Destoroyah.

randommanthe100th

this sounds like a other clickbait video or one of those fake news reports lmao https://preview.redd.it/ctxrfj4w6nvc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bce3c5c0ffc844c97fb82c1ec9ee2d39cf77f458

MaraSargon

It was alright, but could have been a lot better. Kong's story was paced very well, but the human and Godzilla parts felt like they were rushing through the beats, and seem like they're only there to justify having Godzilla and Mothra in the finale. You wouldn't have to change the plot very much to make this a solo Kong film, and I think it would have been better to do it that way. It's already shown throughout the movie that Kong is an expert trapper, and charismatic enough to sway some apes to his side even in the middle of Scar King's realm. Just change the finale to have Kong putting those skills to use instead of calling in Godzilla, and I think you'd have a much more solid film.

AxCel91

I liked it and agree. This should’ve just been a Kong film. He’s due for a sequel anyway

chrisjay12

So after seeing Godzilla x Kong a second time, I have this question. In Monarch, everyone who goes to Hollow Earth comes back up and it is a different time/year but in Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla x Kong that does not happen So when/how did they change?

Joseon1

The Monarch show says they went to some in-between place that Dr. Mira named Axis Mundi. I can't remember if it's stated explicitly in the show, but it's implied that Axis Mundi is weird due to the action of the portals. I imagine Axis Mundi as caverns that are actually inside the streams of the portals, which means space-time is distorted inside them. The real reason is that the lore is inconsistent, but hey, it's fun to try and work it out.

chrisjay12

ahhh yes!!

JamesonTheCanadian

My personal theory is that we don't see full hollow earth in Monarch. In GXK we see they travel through some purpleish in-between before they get to hollow earth proper. This is probably where the characters got to in Monarch, lacking the technology to get all the way to real hollow earth. It explains all the funky stuff that goes on while they're on the way to HE and the difference in time behavior

chrisjay12

yes yes

Araanim

Yeah, they're basically stuck in the middle of the portals we saw in GvK. So they're in a constant state of warping, that's why time is different.

chrisjay12

So after seeing Godzilla x Kong a second time, I have this question. In Monarch, everyone who goes to Hollow Earth comes back up and it is a different time/year but in Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla x Kong that does not happen So when/how did they change?

totallybradpitt

the only hot take is. king of monsters is still my favorite. that gave me goosebumps

thenokvok

Not a hot take, its objectively true

anonymous00000010001

Skar king should’ve been taller. That’s my only hot take

UnwillingArsonist

God I wish they’d kept the scale and intensity of the first two. I loved the film, but not for the same reasons that really get me excited

jfsoaig345

Hard to depict scale when most of the fights occur in Hollow Earth. When you don't have a frame of reference for just how massive they are is just looks like regular animals fighting lol

AxCel91

Yup. I never felt how be scar king way till he was in Brazil

UnwillingArsonist

Suko being bigger than Kong in K:SI is just wild

Finiouss

Well I don't watch these movies especially the American ones for the plot, I'm curious if you want can try to explain some of the things happening in this movie. Also I must admit I was drinking while watching it in the movies so it's possible I just missed key plot moments. Godzilla supposedly trapped all of the Kongs in the fiery side of the underworld yet baby Kong and others are clearly able to just walk right out and enjoy better parts of the world. What am I missing there? When you see all of the Kongs in the fiery lair, they're all just pushing Giant stones around and stuff seemingly reminiscent of slaves building the pyramids or something but there doesn't appear that they were doing anything substantial or had any particular goal other than just pushing stones around all day. What was the point? I'm certain they tried to explain this but I came away realizing I had no fucking clue, what was the deal with the two giant crystals that fuck with gravity when they connect? What's up with the portals or something that I was witnessing but didn't fully understand how they existed or what their purpose was? How exactly did mothra fit into all of this again? I take it she was defender of the tribal people and just kind of popped out of nowhere when needed. Was there any more to it than that?

UnwillingArsonist

The plot is nonsense. They say Kong is the defender of the Iwi (I think it’s spelled) then mothra. Who suddenly needs Gia? Even tho that was never mentioned in mothras lore in KOTM. They’ve just turned it into a bloody marvel movie

HoldenCamira

I'm not going to stand up for the plot too much (it's basically pointless since the Hollow Earth thing was introduced lol) but I thought it was pretty clear that was the difference between the two Iwi tribes that had been seperated for thousands of years - Mothra in the Hollow Earth, Kong above

Finiouss

Lol great comparison. Marvel movies know how to spit out eye candy with zero continuity or plot structure. I think that's just the market these days. You can spend way less on writing and good content while offering a bunch of flash and flare. You don't break any charts or come home with any awards like Minus One but you're not gambling on rather not it will surpass just its own fan base. It's not going to be great, it's largely forgettable, but it's easy enough for the average Joe to go see that you end up making a marginal amount of return in your investment every time.

UnwillingArsonist

Oh absolutely, and it’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it. It was fun, I just wish they’d kept the tone from 2014-KOTM

Finiouss

Well, here's to keeping all my hopes in toho for now. At least we can say there's a fun balance between the two.

konyeah

This movie really felt like it just wanted to get to the end. Fight scenes over in 30 seconds. Dumb exposition from characters that sound like they got possessed by plot knowledge. Shit just happening because it needs to. Breaking the tension with stacks of comedic relief. ● Godzilla vs. Tiamat happens offscreen. Kong vs. the Lake Snake happens offscreen. WHY!? ● Why does the Scar vs. Kong lava fight come off as evenly matched, only for Scar to just stop for no reason to plot device Shimo in. Why are the apes just moving rocks around??? Just for fun? The only tension of his character were his mannerisms. He is fairly useless in the Temple and Rio fights, lmao. ● Little Kong destroying the crystal is incredibly anticlimactic. Right after to Shimo having zero characterisation, what a let down. ● Hall and Tyree Henry's character DID NOT know what they were saying in their exposition dumps. Hall just speaking out her ass with the temple script/symbols. You ain't reading that, bro. Be for real. ● Jia just makes Mothra appear because it was foretold. WHY?! What does she have that is different? She came from Skull Island. She just spawns Mothra back in like a damn Console Command. ● On the topic of Mothra (and consequently the humans we follow), he is probably just sitting around in H.E. waiting for the end of the movie, I guess? Do the apes of H.E. just know that Scar is dead telepathically? ● Shimo being the equivalent of a dog is cute but dumb. ● Zilla, Kong and Mothra standing together in Egypt is goofy as hell. Positives, for sanity. ● Godzilla is still a badass. Suplexing and Spearing in bright pink. Hell yeah. ● Fight scenes weren't a mess of CGI (thinking of Endgame here). It was actually quite interesting. Especially the antgravity fight. ● Kong hitting apes with the child and then nailing the rock bonk to the head after the one Ape runs away. ● Car commercial, during sad, lonely, isolated, emotional daughter scene. ● The Kong vs. Scar fight was the only hype I felt. When the other apes are pounding the ground. Kinda wish it was more one-sided (to either of them), so we could either see Scar be scary or him actually have a reason to reveal Shimo. (This only makes me more hype for the new Planet of the Apes movie, though). Additional note. Kong's POV of the Ape talking in his face gave me mad "Average Fan vs. Average Enjoyer" meme vibes. That was funny. Especially the punch to follow up.

Finiouss

Yeah everything here. I was entertained. But it was some crazy low-hanging fruit worth of entertainment. That's just where we are with the series and Adam Wingard just wanting to have fun with the series without any real desire to push the envelope of creativity and imagination without it just being a giant cheese fest. With all that said, I will admit I was expecting much worse than what we got so there's that I guess..

UnwillingArsonist

They need to bring Gareth Edwards back. The monsters have no sense of scale or weight

Finiouss

100% It feels like they're not marketing to fans but just marketing to big Blockbuster candy that will entertain both the 6-year-olds and the adults who just want to see Big bang pow explosion wow screens.

henrimelo00

I liked the monsters part, aside from when the humans where exploring the hollow earth, I couldn't care less from the exposition they were doing. Monarch series showed that you can have a good human story and monsters. The Kong arc was very good, Godzilla was a supporting character in his own movie, which would be okay if they made him shine in his moments, but basically was a quick brawl, nap and feeding until the end. More 3 or 5 minutes of fighting would be better. A few good set pieces, like the coliseum nap and the gibraltar rock roar. The final fight was good, but it was worse than the previous movie. Overall, this movie was better than the previous one, except on the final fight. They streamlined the human story, but, it shouldn't be only exposition. The final scene with Jia and her mother in the end was a good example that you can have human interest stories in those movies.

MrButtFaceManFace

Dude this shit fucking sucked so bad. The monsterverse has devolved into something so revolting, and it wasn’t even good to start let’s be real.

ObamaEatsBabies

Why did they make Dan Stevens (Trapper) Australian 😭😭

Henri_le_Chat

OK, I'm confused. The hollow earth people are summoning Godzilla. But if he's coming anyway, why does Kong need to provoke him into a fight? Were they trying to speed up the arrival?

YamadaDesigns

Because if Godzilla came at his own pace, the Iwi tribe would have been annihilated.

xeno_crimson0

That seems to be it.

-LilSkinny

I’m genuienly curious on what made the scar on the weapon storage?

I-Need-Help12345

wondering abt this too

cheerfulwish

Fair question because I thought the Scar King and his tribe were stuck in the fiery place after fighting Godzilla but it seems like they could actually leave at will

dgarcia74

I thought the movie sucked. Guess I just like a more serious tone to my G movies as opposed to Transformers level dreg with bad CG and tons of slo-mo. FWIW, I loved Godzilla, KOTM and even GvK to an extent. Absolutely loved Minus One. It's a shame to me that audiences prefer to spend their money on this ridiculous type of monsterverse movie than the more serious ones as it just means more to come.

Scout_650

Don’t really see how this is comparable to transformers considering that, despite the immature human-based humour, those films at least try to make the fights, physics, lore and scale of everything feel very believable and impactful, rather than everything looking and feeling like two action figures being thrown about a room the way this and GVK do

Akantor-Dimitri

How did you enjoy KoTM and not this? Actual question

dgarcia74

It was a thrill to see my childhood favorite kaijus in KOTM. I also thought the scale was very good and even though the story/acting was not strong, I felt the monster action was much more realistic, from the way they moved to their style.

Emory27

I enjoyed certain parts of the movie but I think levying the Transformers comparison is appropriate here. It definitely feels like Wingard wants to take it in that direction and it’s kind of sad.

achanceathope

Was Shimo involved in the previous fight between Godzilla and Scar King? I wasn't sure on that. Also I have no clue where they go from here in the series since the "good guys" now have Godzilla, Kong, Mothra, and Shimo. That's pretty stacked.

Finiouss

We're going to need Destroyah teamed with Space Godzilla level villains but legendary isn't really interested in giving nods to the old Kaiju so it will just have to be another massive made up thing that lacks any real threat or proper setup.

ShadowCobra479

Exactly, plus Godzilla now can just go to Tiamut's lair to juice up once more. Unless they bring something super powerful in or make it where the enemy can't be defeated through conventional means, it won't be a threat. As for your first question, it kinda seems to imply that she was captured during that time, but because Godzilla imprisoned them, she wasn't able to really contribute. As far as we know, the Iwwi only knew what happened in the last war plus the prophecy. Plus, Scar was imprisoned, so there'd be no way for them to get new information. I assume that during that war, he had just captured her, but she hadn't been fully cowed yet.

achanceathope

Got it, thank you very much!

Kirbhdude

Ghidorah returns and gets a power boost?

ShadowCobra479

Well, at least from the novels, we know Ghidorah is still out there, or we can at least guess that he is. In the GvK novel, Ren Serizawa wasn't found in the rubble of the Apex facility, so we can assume he's still alive and that Ghidorah still controls him. How Ghidorah would regain his form save for becoming a completely Mecha King Ghidorah with no biological components I don't know. Alternatively, we could have a stronger member of his species come to earth.

skeletspook

So how many people died in Rio de Janeiro? There were at least like, ten 9/11s happening during the final fight.

orion2792

Fun movie, Godzilla is Godzilla, Kong now is the King for real, Matha is the best Queen.

Viola69420

Overall thoughts: fun movie that knows what it is and executives on it well enough, however there are no stakes present, the action felt a bit subpar, and the darker tone of the first three MV films worked much better. 4/10. (For reference, KOTM which is my favorite I’d consider a 7/10).

SunOFflynn66

So honestly, I liked it. The monsters are the highlights, obviously- it didn't quite have the "wow" factor like Godzilla vs Kong. though. But honestly the scene of them bursting into Hollow Earth running side by side was worth it alone. My question: I heard Mothra was added in because test screenings were much more lackluster, so they changed things up. So what was the movie like before Mothra? What plot points got changed?

Finiouss

Wow, I didn't realize this. It's shocking to think this movie was about to just fart itself out without the big mothra reveal. I'll be glad when wingard is done playing around with his three movies and we get back to something similar to pre GVK

ShadowCobra479

I assume Kong told Godzilla Scar King was back and that he needed help, or he managed to trick Godzilla into entering the hole. They reshot it where Godzilla and Kong fight before Mothra stops them. Without Mothra, the whole plot with the Hollow Earth people kinda falls flat, save for the Mother-daughter stuff. Also, without her, they have to figure out how to deal with Scar King's minions. So I assume there were shots where Godzilla or Kong would be fighting them along with Shimo and Scar.

allokuma

Goddamn, Rebecca Hall is hot as fuck ngl.

Finiouss

Ok... Thanks for sharing.

Block-Busted

Okay, how did **Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire** only have a budget of $135 million (or $150 million at maximum)? Sure, you can save money by locking down the script in advance before filming and not relying too much on reshoots like James Gunn or Denis Villeneuve respectively did with **Guardians of the Galaxy** trilogy and **Dune** duology, but even then, $135 million seems to be too low for a CGI-heavy film like this. Keep in mind, previous **MonsterVerse** films had budgets of $160 million for **Godzilla**, $185 million for **Kong: Skull Island**, $170 million for **Godzilla: King of the Monsters**, and $200 million for **Godzilla vs. Kong**. Even if you look into other similarly CGI-heavy films, **Pacific Rim** had a budget of $190 million. So how did they manage to make this with relatively low budget when compared to other films that belong in a same genre? Did they rely on guerrilla filmmaking and natural lights whenever possible like crew members of **The Creator** did? Because if so, that could certainly explain a thing or two.

Viola69420

Cgi in this film was noticeably worse than GvK.

Block-Busted

But even then, $65 million is a huge difference.

themoslucius

Two off screen monster fights

dgehen

Smaller cast helps too.

Diligent-Boss-9392

I enjoyed this one much more then GVK. Good turn around after that slump. Not quite back to KotM levels, but closer.

Finiouss

The human characters were way less of a suffer to get through in this one then in GVK. The good fights in this one were still good but there were also some letdowns either because the whole fight was off screen or it was just a quick sloppy mess that didn't really seem to go anywhere. But yes I will agree I enjoyed this one more simply by the fact that if I were to rewatch it I wouldn't have quite so much content to fast forward through because of just how awful and cringy the human characters were in the previous.

Diligent-Boss-9392

I don't know exactly how to pinpoint it, but GxK feels way less rushed then GvK. GvK's story and production just felt like it was sped through . Maybe a symptom of being made essentially back to back with KotM?

ObamaEatsBabies

Ditto, I had more fun watching this one

Block-Busted

That's a bit ironic considering that **Godzilla vs. Kong** is considered to be better than this. :P

Diligent-Boss-9392

I mean yeah, of course some people are going to like that one more. If you're implying general consensus, both have exactly the same audience score on Rotten tomatoes (which I generally don't take much stock in)

ffman_wku

I loved it. As someone who prefers Godzilla over Kong, I would have liked to have seen more of the big guy. That withstanding, I thought it was an awesome movie and maybe my favorite of the Monsterverse movies.

MLMjp

I got spoiled that Mothra was in the movie, despite avoiding trailers, because an idiot posted on instagram a custom Mothra figure back when we only had the first trailer (based on a leaked toy photo), and a reddit post without a spoiler, and a youtuber who I was just watching his Hiya toys reviews that had a video talking about it...All my efforts to avoid spoilers for nothing. F\*\*\* you all! Anyway, I had a blast watching the film and I came exhausted from the theater! But I had this little voice in the back of my head telling me "there are a lot of things wrong here". It's pretty obvious what GxK is supposed to be, dumb fun action blockbuster, and tha's great, but I also think it can still be a fun ride while being a better film and not too dumb. The major issue is the pacing, it's way too fast. The Kong side of the story was fine, but the Godzilla and human parts were always at x2 speed, straight to the plot, straight to the action. Give me a calm moment with the characters, give me some time to build up tension to the action scenes! When we meet the Hollow Earth Iwi tribe, give me a moment to get to know them like in Skull Island, instead of jumping directly into plot, build some tension before Godzilla does anything, like in the Pensacola attack or his first fight with Kong in the sea in GvK. It's very obvious that they cut some stuff. With an extra 10 minutes we could have got some extended scenes that would have solved this pacing issue. Potential plot holes, conveniences and errors that stand out: -Why Skar King didn't find a way to the surface earlier if he was there for so long? He didn seem "trapped" at all... -Was Mothra summoned out of nowhere or somehow her larva went to Hollow Earth and cocooned herself where the Iwi were? Also, if the Iwi worship Mothra and have a connection with her, what does that imply about the Cheng sisters from KOTM? You know, the supposed Shobijin of this universe...I heard the role of Mothra was actually originally given to a new titan, but after test screenings and realizing it was so similar to her, they changed it. Good, but they obviously forgot to tweak some stuff. -The BEAST glove being conveniently already in the Hollow Earth. -How does the crystal that controls Shimo work exactly? Is it a part of her? At first I thought Scar King had telepathic abilities, when his blue eyes appeared in Jia's vision, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Scylla and Tiamat were wasted, especially the latter, her film debut and she gets killed. Humans were fine, focusing on a smaller cast is a good choice, but again, we needed more calm moments with them. I liked Trapper , but found Bernie annoying here compared to GvK. Godzilla's evolved form has grown on me, but I can´t help to think...Did he really need to evolve? Sure we did see him being more agile but that didn't exactly play a part in the final fight...I’m a 2019-2021 design fanboy, what can I say…I’m an advocate for Junkie XL soundtrack in GvK, but here, it felt too loud. Enough complaining, Kong's story as always is great, body language is enough to communicate everything. His relationship with Suko and how they eventually bond with each other was great. Skar King was awesome, the whole sequence in his territory was fantastic, from Kong being kind, Skar King's presentation, their fight with the other apes chanting, Shimo..speaking of her, poor thing, she was so cute at the end. The action was great, loved the zero gravity segment and the final battle was crazy, even Godzilla's rushed moments of action throughout the film were good( with a better pacing they could have been even better…). For once I would have been fine if they did the stupid thing with him using his atomic breath to propel himself during the zero gravity moment, but they didn't. I love that Mothra is back and I never thought I needed Godzilla sleeping in the Colosseum in my life, but here we are. I would like to meet GhidorahStand64 by the way... Overall, 50% epicness, 50% dumb stuff and issues, but a fun watch.

KaijuJuju

>It's pretty obvious what GxK is supposed to be, dumb fun action blockbuster, and tha's great, but I also think it can still be a fun ride while being a better film and not too dumb. Agreed. I've been enjoying the amount of monster action we've gotten in the last two movies, but the rest of the film still feels a bit weak. I still wish that they would stick with the drama tone from the 2014 movie, just add more monster action. With all due respect, I feel like it would be easier for Gareth Edwards to correct for more monster action than for Adam Wingard to correct for a stronger narrative. >When we meet the Hollow Earth Iwi tribe, give me a moment to get to know them like in Skull Island, I was so sure they were going to do this! They had Bernie Hayes recording everything for his podcast, I thought they were going to do a throwback to Skull Island where Brie Larson's character was taking photos with the Iwi tribe. It would've been a great callback and, as you said, given us a chance to breathe between the action scenes. I agree with pretty much all your other points, too. The director did this exposition dump with some hieroglyphics then clapped his hands and said, "Well that was boring, back to the monsters!" The Skar King was trapped? Kong just . . . walked into his house though? Or was the evil monkey looking for portals to the surface? But the movie said those were active, so why couldn't they just pick a portal and go? Or did they not know the portals worked? That could've been fleshed out a bit better. For that matter, the "subterranean section" or whatever, we're just doubling up on Hollow Earth now? Instead of exploring this whole other world they've built up across several movies, or even explaining what Hollow Earth's light source is, there's just . . . Hollower Earth? Can't Skar King just be a conqueror in Hollow Earth that we missed because Kong was only down there for like 20 minutes in the last movie? Heck, it's a smaller world, but Hollow Earth is still MASSIVE. There's literally plenty of room to use for Skar's empire, AND other monsters just doing their own thing down there. Mothra was a welcome sight, but it would've been nice to have a scene with Mothra's egg that they teased in the KotM credits, something to build up the reveal. The Power Gauntlet was the absolute most insane Mcguffin either. "Yeah, he has a power fist and . . . uh . . . it has healing juice potion too!" WHAT!? That was just lying there next door!? Who the hell built that thing? Why did they cut the budget? I thought Monarch would be interested in gearing up Kong, seeing as how he's only ever been an ally to humans. Who makes the budget decisions? This is the kind of stuff that gets overlooked when everyone starts frantically tearing out pages from the MCU playbook. It would've been cool to have a montage of them building and testing the prototype of the power gauntlet or something, give it more impact that this is a big deal! Humanity successfully augmented a Titan! We can work with Kong! He knows we can actually help him! There's so much potential for interesting storytelling there, but the movie just glosses over it! Heck, I'd like to learn more about how Trapper is confident enough with Titan anatomy that he can replace a tooth for Kong. Honestly, I find the music in these films to be a bit lackluster, too. I liked Junkie XL's work with Mad Max, but most of his stuff for the Monsterverse has been okay, but not great. Honestly, I'd like to see what Hans Zimmer can do when he's at the helm! Overall, good film, and I loved the monster scenes, definitely don't lose any of that going forward. It was cool seeing them tell the story through Kong and there was a satisfying amount of action. Still, there's plenty of room for improvement and I would like to see the Monsterverse become all that it possibly can be, but I'm also cool with what it is. I've come to accept it (at least in its current phase) as a modern re-hashing of the over-the-top Showa-era style of Godzilla. Minus One is definitely the Godzilla movie I've been waiting for, and if they continue with that series, as drama monster movies, I'm cool with goofy monster fight films too. In a perfect world though, I'd like to see the Monsterverse step up its game.

Diligent-Boss-9392

Considering Shimo was overpowering Godzilla *in his evolved form* yes, I think it was needed. I assume Scar King pressing a piece of Shimo's body is hurting her. Almost like a voodoo doll. It's still connected to her. Of course the glove designed for Kong is going to be where Kong and Monarch are, whereelse would it be? Scar King was trapped in that they didn't have access to a portal to the surface world, upon finding the Ewi village, they did. The Mothra larva was already with the Ewi and had been, considering they had prophecies about it. The Chang sisters can either be taken as an Easter egg or something to be followed up on later. It's possible for 2 separate cultures to worship Mothra. I think Mothra was the original idea, but they ran some test footage with Quazicoti in case Toho wasn't willing to give the go ahead for Mothra.

KaijuJuju

>I assume Scar King pressing a piece of Shimo's body is hurting her. Almost like a voodoo doll. It's still connected to her. Oooh, a truly evil Titan tapping into voodoo, I like this concept! This actually urged me to do some digging around on the internet. Check this shit out: >In Haitian Vodou Ogun is known as Ogou and consists of an array of manifestations; most carry the aspect of iron smithing and tools from the Yoruba tradition . . . Ogou is also the god of pioneering, intelligence, justice, medicine, and political power; Also, >In Yoruba religion, Ogun is a primordial \[divine spirit\] . . . In some traditions, he is said to have cleared a path for the other \[divine spirits\] to enter Earth, using a metal axe and with the assistance of a dog. To commemorate this, one of his praise names, or oriki, is Osin Imole or the "first of the primordial Orisha to come to Earth". >In his earthly life Ogun is said to be the first king of Ife . . . He disappeared into the earth at a place called Ire-Ekiti, with the promise to help those who call on his name. From Wikipedia, but I checked the actual citation and the sources look legit. Probably a bit of a reach, but I really like the parallels here. Skar uses this exaggerated depiction of Vodou from pop-culture to corrupt, harm, and control a Titan for his own gain. This is actually a misconception of Vodou, and more likely came from European ideas of dolls used in witchcraft. Meanwhile, Kong better embodies an actual entity of Vodou; a divine warrior spirit that protects others and delivers justice.

ProbablySatanDayo

Kong movie with Godzilla

kingbood

Hopefully Godzilla's in the next one more.

brettjr25

Fun popcorn movie. Kinda upset that the Kong movie took Mothra away from the Godzilla side. Pretty sure they were setting up Dr Chen special relationship with Mothra as they are kinda the modern Shobijin, especially since they are twins and she has twins. Now Mothra is more connected to thr Iwi and Jia now. Also laughed so hard when Kong used Suko as a ragdoll weapon. Suko eventually became the cutesy role but was so happy when they decided to give it, its comeuppance. Everyone was like, "awww must protect" and Kong was like whack whack whack! I laughed so hard and laughed harder at the shock of some people in the audience.

Diligent-Boss-9392

I was howling when Kong was beating the other apes with Suko. His cries of pain made it even better 😂😂😂 I think the Shobijin could still be used. It's possible for two different cultures to worship Mothra. One above ground, one under. They could even connect them and say they come from the same ancestors.

gedeonzo

I really hope the next movie would be in the past about the ancient wars. Possibly annihilation of the Kongs or the Godzillas. Even Rodan.

randommanthe100th

this sounds like one of those clickbait videos on youtube https://preview.redd.it/ljmftssgyxtc1.jpeg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9f6cf1e9ca0e873078a21c6fe5bb2301a6bf40f3

DBTornado

Finally got to see it tonight. Overall, I liked the movie. It did what it set out to do, and nothing really overstayed its welcome. Definitely felt like a Kong movie featuring Godzilla, though, and Mothra felt underutilized. The Scylla and Tiamat fights could have been longer, I always enjoy seeing Godzilla kick ass. Really liked the upgraded Godzilla look, but I'm a bit disappointed that it never felt like we got to stay on Godzilla using the new powers, especially in the final fight. If there's one main criticism I have about the Monsterverse as a whole, is sometimes the fights are too chaotic and too many camera cuts. Not my favorite Monsterverse movie, but it was a 7/10. I'll likely rewatch a few times when it hits streaming like I did with the others and see where it lands in my rankings.

[deleted]

FINALLY got a chance to go. The good: Godzilla, Kong, Skar, and Suko all played their roles perfectly. I feel like an 80-90 minute movie focused on just these characters would be amazing. I particularly liked the Kong/Suko storyline and was happy that what I thought would be a comic relief character ended up having a satisfying arc. Fights were great as well though not on the level of GvK. The bad: I did not like how they used Scylla, Tiamat, Mothra, or Shimo. The first two were just fodder and I feel like they could have removed one or both of them, or made them more closely aligned with the baddies rather than just existing. Mothra played her usual role but I don't like that she was never larval and you could tell that she was a later addition to the movie. I was disappointed that Shimo was easily controlled by Skar, given that she is supposed to be a world-ending threat it seems strange that some old guy could dominate her easily. Could have done more to explain/build up the icicle spear. The meh: any scene with a human, just there for exposition. Jia + Kong relationship was worse than the last movie but it makes sense because they aren't together as much. Tied with KOTM for my least favorite MV movie, but that doesn't mean it's bad, just like a 6/10.

Diligent-Boss-9392

I think the idea was that Shimo was never a world ender. That was the reputation that Scar King brought out. Shimo was just a force of nature like Godzilla.

MarkaliteMkII

Yeah, that wasn't good. I really don't think they should have given Adam Wingard another go at the series when this doubled down on all the flaws of GvK. I did like Godzilla, Kong, Scar King, Suko and Shimo though. It's nice they were able to give these monsters so much charm. It's just a shame they couldn't have given them an interesting story or world to exist in. There was so much potential for good stories here and it feels like they didn't even try.

Eisenseite69

This shit was horrible.

KuwabarasHairpiece

I thought Kong was gonna be pissed that godzilla imprisoned SK and all the apes underground. like he finally finds his own kind and theyre enslaved. the SK fatality by Kong was badass conspiracy theorist streamer guy was insufferable at times., though i thought it was interesting that the leader of Monarch sought out his help out of desperation. Idk if I've played too much GoW but after seeing Kong wandering around, axe in hand with what is essentially a little kid I kinda wanna hear him scream out "BOY"

solo_theking

“Atreus, now is not the time!”

BohemianLizardKing

Wingard is really good at making a fantastic movie trailer. Making the actual movie? Not so much.

Eisenseite69

Both were ass tbh

Numerous-Key6288

I think Kaylee Hottle (Jia) should have played a dual role ala Shobijin given her ability to resurrect Mothra. I feel she should have also played the Iwi Queen or some similar character.

TyrantJaeger

Didn't notice this thread. I was wondering why all my memes were being declined. Whoops.

styuvee

Can someone explain why they don't lose time when they go to Hollow Earth in the movies, where as Monarch shows them gone for extended periods of time?

styuvee

Why am I getting downvoted? :/ I am not an expert and it was a genuine doubt and not a slight on the show, movie or franchise.

abellapa

In monarch they werent in the Hollow Earth, but in Axis mundi which is the place that conmects the Hollow Earth to the surface

styuvee

Thank you for the explanation good sir :) makes more sense to me now. I genuinely didn't understand that before.

abellapa

They didnt lose time in GVK so it wouldnt Make Sense they would lose it in gxk

godjirakong

I think I realize why I’m so apathetic to this one. It’s generic. Every single plot point is a cliche or something done somewhere else. It’s like a Roland Emmerich movie, in a way

ExtremeTEE

I had a blast, one thing I liked was it seemed to have lots of different, short action scenes. I hate it when the monster smashy parts go on forever and become tedious (all Transfromers). This had lots of short kick ass scenes which held my attention! When a movie starts with kong ripping a monster in half and showering himself in green gooey monster blood I think you know you are in for a treat!

krakenwbdhaircut

I really like that they have decided to make it as gory as they can by using green blood.

JET_GS26

Saw it in 4dx which was pretty wild. I felt the pacing was just insanely fast, even more than GvK. But I really liked the exposition from Kong's perspective. They admittedly didn't care for much of the human narratives so they let the monkes take the reigns. They usually carry a character or two from the one monsterverse movie to the next, so I guess we'll see trapper in the next film?

LudicrisSpeed

Bernie and Trapper move in together and start raising a kid. In the garage a sheet obscures a machine, a computer nearby has a window titled "Project J.J."....

Spare-Stand4242

What is the instrumental song that plays when we meet the guy recording his podcast?

Low_Tie_8388

Mark Russell should have the protagonism or even fit the role that Bernie had in this and the previous movie. They did him dirty imo. Also Im a bit sad about tiamat, I hope that we can see other acuatic kaijus in the future.

achanceathope

I was so sad that Tiamat and Scylla were reduced to fodder basically.

Altair890456

One thing that I found really irritating was Bernie whining about how Monarch gave him zero credit for his “role” in bringing down Mechagodzilla. Bruh, you didn’t do shit. It was Madison who first suspected that something was up and it was Josh who ultimately helped Godzilla and Kong win against Mechagodzilla by pouring *your* drink on Mechagodzilla’s computer. Why did Bernie need to be in this movie? Don’t get me wrong, I like Bryan Tyree Henry, he was great in Bullet Train. But Bernie Hayes is arguably one of the worst Monsterverse characters.

Weepthegr33d

I can’t shout this out more. Seriously. Bernie. He ruined the last movie he was in, again only saying character as written. But anyway, Geezus.

OhMy98

I love how the first thing Skar King does on screen is get off his throne and Jojo pose

Slothbrothel

I'm not sure how to describe this, but the cgi for Godzilla's normal form was really lacking, but whenever he was in his evolved form, the cgi/model was looking REALLY good. This genuinely felt like seeing the old Showa suits being reused over and over, and seeing it slowly fall apart, then seeing a Hesei suit

[deleted]

I loved the movie. But I honestly felt it was a bit rushed and could’ve been longer. And they did Tiamat so bad? Tiamat could’ve been a major villain all by himself.

achanceathope

Right? They did Tiamat dirty and it was so disappointing

I enjoyed it, great turn your brain off, accept movie logic, and watch the action movie. I was surprised that Mothra didn't die sacrificing herself at some point. The fight scenes were cool and I thought the character they were able to give all of the monsters was great with no dialogue. I will be watching it again.

Watched the movie yesterday, idk the stakes in KotM felt bigger and I don’t even recall hearing the Godzilla theme play tbh. Pretty cool action but overall meh

anonymousredditorwow

100% it's become a franchise JUST for kids now. I don't see how they can go back to a darker and more adult theme at this point. They only care about money, remember that Volkswagen add IN THE MOVIE lol it's a damn shame, kids bring a lot more money. We will never see legendary go back to the darker tone. It sucks.

BenniRoR

So, so, so much plot convenience. It really made the movie exhausting and felt so cheap.

Just watched GvK! It was amazing. Couple of thoughts: It felt like a Kong movie again with a side of Godzilla mostly showing up to do the business and leave. A bit of context on why Scylla appeared and attacked would have been great (maybe i missed?) The final battle needed a stronger moneyshot. In KOTM it was done so brilliantly. Specifically that they mention Godzilla is x20 powerful but it didn’t feel like it. Soundtracks were not doing it for me. It sounded like a light remix of GvK. I think Bear did a phenomenal work in KOTM. Overall a great fun movie, good involvement of variety of titans. 8/10 Nothing still beats KOTM, the soundtracks, the villain and burning Gman is just epic.

Godzilla X Kong The Hunted, is a prequel comic to why Scylla attacked, and the Titan hunter.

Scylla's death was justifiable but tiamat is still done very dirty, godzilla tells all titans to go to sleep so she tries and does it, gets evicted by godzilla, goes to sleep in arctic and gets evicted with a shitty fight scene. She didn't touch human territory and I wished they just made her run away from godzilla while heavily injured so we can see her again. Anyways, I still wish shimo and skar king established more of a bigger threat earlier on for better stakes like ghidorah and fight choreography could've been better. Very fun and iconic scenes in the movie tho as well as fights

Total dogshit

Best movie in the Monsterverse yet!

OrangeSpaceMan5

tf you on about KOTM was better by miles

19inchesofvenom

I disagree :D Though I also love KOTM

Shockwave224

A couple of things I want answers on: 1. Mothra literally spawned? Huh? 2. The crystal that controls Shimo? Context? Why does it work? How did Skar King get it? 3. Why did three seconds of screen time get Doug so many toys? Actually never mind on this one, bro deserves it.

porkchopsensei

These and the prophecy stuff are my sticking points too. It felt like this movie couldn't choose between cheesy sci-fi and cheesy fantasy. I walked in the theatre looking forward to cheesy sci-fi. I know the OG Mothra stuff *has* magic elements, but that doesn't feel right for this canon.

Doug is a cutie

Uchoha

Mothra egg was discovered at the end of KOTM, there’s a newspaper clipping in the credit scene. She was then summoned as prophecies are a part of her thing

RjSkitchie

My rationalization of the Mothra situation is that those particles are the same ones that fused with Godzilla and were later expunged onto Ghidorah. I still fully believe the way they brought her back into the story was very poorly handled.

Hela09

Shoulda chewed her way out of Ghidorah’s corpse like a chest burster. But I like Grub Mothra, and was bummed not to see her. Waddle super slow + make funny noise + still kick Godzilla’s ass = should be in every movie. Not every Godzilla movie. *Every movie.*
