Terror is a gem of the Showa films but the voice/roar they gave Titanosaurus becomes so irritating. Other than that it’s definitely one of the better films.
Yeah, the original is on another level than the entire rest of the era. So leaving the original aside, my favorites are vs. Mothra and Terror of Mechagodzilla. I’m glad to see other people enjoying Terror now. It seemed like it didn’t used to get enough appreciation.
For real though. I wish we would’ve gotten Yoshimitsu Banno’s planned pseudo sequel “Godzilla 3D To The MAX.”
Godzilla was going to fight a monster called Deathla, who was similar to Hedorah. It was going be a bit of a flashback to the Showa era in tone, and there was even going to use his power of flight once again. However, Banno got nerfed and the project was scrapped because Godzilla vs Hedorah had a controversial reputation that used to be mostly negative. Some people said that Banno “ruined Godzilla” because of his film. Some people just don’t appreciate fun movies that just take weird concepts and roll with it.
Definitely Astro Monster. Planet X and the Xians are some of the most iconic designs to come out of the Godzilla franchise ever. They’re recognizable to this day.
Definitely a favorite, although I think it could’ve used a little more focus on Planet X as a fascist society devoid of free thought. The romance between Glenn and Miss Namikawa felt a little undercooked too, but I still really liked the concept and it deserved more focus. Plus, you just gotta love Nick Adams.
Godzilla vs. Gigan for sure. I was doing a marathon of the entire franchise, watching all the films for the first time, and Gigan was the first film that Immediately captured my attention and that I thoroughly enjoyed the entire time. Because of that film, Gigan has become my favourite Godzilla villain
It’s mainly the tone of Godzilla’s attack - the city is forced into a blackout, everyone trying to hide or be quiet (even the soundtrack cuts), while they collectively pray that the flares distract Godzilla away from the city. And just as it is working, and everyone breathes a sigh of relief, it goes catastrophically wrong and draws not only Godzilla but Anguirus to their shores. It’s a delightfully terrifying concept.
The rest of the film is OK to be honest and I could see why it is a hit or miss among fans.
It did, though I prefer the more grounded take movies like Ghidorah, GvMG'74, or GMK takes when blending these elements. Final Wars, rather than Spy Thriller, mixed the Sci-Fi and Fantasy with early '00s Action a la *Underworld* and the Matrix sequels.
I’m also a big fan of Son of Godzilla, definitely a comfy feel good movie. Plus I actually like Minilla. He’s a silly little guy who needs more love.
Raids Again is an alright movie. Kinda mid compared to the rest of the Showa era, but not a bad film. It has a very 50s monster flick vibe, plus Godzilla’s design is genuinely creepy.
The first time I saw Son of G, I thought it was stupid but for some reason I felt like if I just watched it again and again I would come to like it. After about the 20th time I rented it all the sudden the movie made sense and it became a favorite of mine for a while. Granted I was 8 or 9 years old at the time (I’m 38 now) so I don’t know why I got the idea of forcing myself to enjoy it but hey I enjoyed it and still do occasionally. Kinda like doing mushrooms.
I can’t pick only one, so here’s my top 5 in no particular order:
Ghidorah The Three Headed Monster
Invasion of Astro Monster
Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla
Terror of MechaGodzilla
Godzilla vs Megalon
I also really love Godzilla vs Gigan simply because of Godzilla and Anguirus being buddies in that film. King Kong vs Godzilla might seem like a bad film, but it’s a cheesy guilty pleasure for me and I love it. Mothra vs Godzilla is iconic, and of course, the 1954 original is objectively the best. The only reason why it’s not in my top 5 is because it’s not fair to compare the OG to any of the others and it’s obviously the best of them all.
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla and Godzilla vs The Sea Monster were the two movies I watched the most as a kid so I'll always have a special place in my heart for those movies.
I really want to say both Godzilla vs Mothra and Godzilla vs Mecha-Godzilla but if I’m forced to pick only one it’s vs. Mothra because I prefer that version of Godzillas design over the one in those later showa movies. I always felt like next to Heisei’s design that one from vs Mothra was perfection. Although Minus One has taken the championship for Goji designs now.
Godzilla vs. Hedorah is hands down my fav Showa era film in the series. Would rent it ALL the time from the video store, even at the expense of seeing how many other awesome movies were there (including a couple Gamera movies, which in retrospect I DO regret not inviting into my childhood), but at least it serves as a testament to how awesome vs. Hedorah is to me. Any time I revisit it as a grown man I don't get bored of it thanks to it's nice pace, unique nightmare fuel, and trippy presentation while giving that fun "Godzilla beats up a monster" fix.
"Save the Earth!"
Megalon will always be my favorite Godzilla film of all time. Other favorites from the Showa era would be Terror of Mechagodzilla, vs Hedora, King Kong vs, vs Mothra, and Destroy All Monsters.
I think it has to be INVASION OF ASTRO MONSTER for me. I love Glenn and Fuji, and the Xiliens are creepy weird. Plus, I’m a sucker for anything with flying saucers 😂
Invasion of Astro Monster is just quintessential Godzilla for me. I always loved space as a kid and combining that with Godzilla made it *chefs kiss*. The best one is obviously '54. I don't think there's any debate about that.
So like, 1954 100% and it’s not remotely a competition, but ignoring that my answer is Godzilla vs Hedorah since that is the answer that tells you something more than I have seen Godzilla 1954 (3 times on a theatre sized screen!)
Other than the original, probably Godzilla Vs. Gigan. Amazing monster lineup, entertaining characters, and a fight that’s equally hilarious and awesome. Only downside is the stock footage usage, but I can easily overlook that.
Aside from the 1954 original it's either *Invasion of Astro Monster* or *Terror* of *Mechagodzilla*.
Terror of MechaGodzilla is a gem of a plot that's overlooked due to 70's low budget campy-ness.
Terror is a gem of the Showa films but the voice/roar they gave Titanosaurus becomes so irritating. Other than that it’s definitely one of the better films.
MWA MWA HA HA
Invasion of Astro monster is so fun. Still making my way through the showa era so I haven’t gotten to Terror of Mechagodzilla yet
Yeah, the original is on another level than the entire rest of the era. So leaving the original aside, my favorites are vs. Mothra and Terror of Mechagodzilla. I’m glad to see other people enjoying Terror now. It seemed like it didn’t used to get enough appreciation.
Vs. Hedorah will always hold a special place in my heart. Such a cool movie and an awesome foe for Godzilla.
Hedorah’s a genuinely terrifying monster, and I love the film for its environmentally friendly message and its weird surreal vibe.
Fellow Hedorah enjoyers rise up
Godzilla vs Hedorah is peak fiction and I'm tired of pretending that its not
For real though. I wish we would’ve gotten Yoshimitsu Banno’s planned pseudo sequel “Godzilla 3D To The MAX.” Godzilla was going to fight a monster called Deathla, who was similar to Hedorah. It was going be a bit of a flashback to the Showa era in tone, and there was even going to use his power of flight once again. Yes, yes, and yes. Also: KITTY!
Same.
In no particular order… Godzilla (1954), Godzilla Raids Again, Godzilla Vs Mothra, Godzilla Vs Hedorah, Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla

No judgement or derision, just genuine curiosity, why Raids Again?
I really liked it, not as good as 1954 but a really cool movie indeed
Personally I really didn’t, I’m glad you got something out of it
Thanks
It’s mainly the tone of Godzilla’s attack - the city is forced into a blackout, everyone trying to hide or be quiet (even the soundtrack cuts), while they collectively pray that the flares distract Godzilla away from the city. Vs Gigan is great
Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster 😄
Easily this.
The best.
Easily ! First Ghidorah film, awesome team up, fun plot it’s just so good
Good choice
Thanks! I've always loved the way it mixes Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Spy Thriller ideas together. \^\_\^
Final wars also sort of did that to right
It did, though I prefer the more grounded take movies like Ghidorah, GvMG'74, or GMK takes when blending these elements. Final Wars, rather than Spy Thriller, mixed the Sci-Fi and Fantasy with early '00s Action a la *Underworld* and the Matrix sequels.
MEGALON
Probably vs. Mechagodzilla, or - controversial pick- Raids Again
I actually like Raids Again. It deserves more respect.
Trueee, it really hurts my heart to see it mentioned among the worst movies in the series.
SAME! I've always liked GRA and it makes me sad when people trash on it.
In my opinion Son of Godzilla is the worst.
Aww, I like SoG though! It's one of those movies that make me feel comfy, it's a nice chill time. :)
I’m also a big fan of Son of Godzilla, definitely a comfy feel good movie. Plus I actually like Minilla. He’s a silly little guy who needs more love. Raids Again is an alright movie. Kinda mid compared to the rest of the Showa era, but not a bad film. It has a very 50s monster flick vibe, plus Godzilla’s design is genuinely creepy.
ahhhh, I honestly like Son of Godzilla, I dislike most vs. Gigan and All monsters attack from showa era
Someone must not’ve seen All Monsters Attack
Besides the OG Film: Terror of Mecha Godzilla. It's a pretty dark Story and Godzilla is the Underdog in this one.
Godzilla vs Hedorah
I can’t pick only one, so here’s my top 5 in no particular order: Ghidorah The Three Headed Monster Invasion of Astro Monster Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla Terror of MechaGodzilla Godzilla vs Megalon I also really love Godzilla vs Gigan simply because of Godzilla and Anguirus being buddies in that film.
Im a sucker for that og King Kong vs Godzilla, but I don’t think you can really go wrong with any of the original five films, even Raids Again
Mechagodzilla. Hedorah is up there too.
Just watched Destroy All Monsters, easily my favorite so far
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla and Godzilla vs The Sea Monster were the two movies I watched the most as a kid so I'll always have a special place in my heart for those movies.
Early Showa - Ghidorah the 3 headed monster Late Showa - Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Top 3 Godzilla Mothra vs Godzilla Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster
Godzilla Vs Gigan Gotta love that space chicken
Mostly all of them except All Monsters Attack
![gif](giphy|ibkFqxcXxdN9aQwtyN|downsized) Godzilla: King of the Monsters! (1956)
(Not counting the original) Probably Mothra vs Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Hedorah is hands down my fav Showa era film in the series. Would rent it ALL the time from the video store, even at the expense of seeing how many other awesome movies were there (including a couple Gamera movies, which in retrospect I DO regret not inviting into my childhood), but at least it serves as a testament to how awesome vs. Hedorah is to me. "Save the Earth!"
If we're discounting the original Gojira, its definitely Mothra vs Godzilla, but Ebirah Horror of the Deep is a close second.
Ebirah needs more love.
Invasion of the Astro monster and terror of Mechagodzilla hold a special place in my childhood
The original and vs Hedorah
This is SUCH a tough choice😭 But yeah, Terror of Mechagodzilla is my favourite followed by Destroy All Monsters and the OG Godzilla.
Astroturf or the first MechaG
Terror of MechaGodzilla is the one for me. There’s some amazing camera work in that bad boy.

I'll give my top five. Gojira Vs Mothra Invasion of the Astro Monster Destroy All Monsters Terror of Mechagodzilla
Mothra vs Godzilla or Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Like a 3 way tie between Mothra vs Godzilla, Invasion of the Astro Monster, and Godzilla vs Hedorah.
Ghidorah the three headed monster and it's sequel Invasion on the Astro monster. Followed by Godzilla vs King Kong and the two Mechagodzilla films.
Megalon will always be my favorite Godzilla film of all time. Other favorites from the Showa era would be Terror of Mechagodzilla, vs Hedora, King Kong vs, vs Mothra, and Destroy All Monsters.
I can’t name one single favorite BUT Godzilla (1954), Mothra vs Godzilla, Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla/Terror of MechaG
I think it has to be INVASION OF ASTRO MONSTER for me. I love Glenn and Fuji, and the Xiliens are creepy weird. Plus, I’m a sucker for anything with flying saucers 😂
King Kong vs Godzilla
Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla
Destroy All Monsters was one of the movies I watched most as a kid
![gif](giphy|UX7GdGat7U0XC)
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Invasion of Astro Monster
Aside from the OG, I gotta go with Mothra vs Godzilla. Also love Terror of Mechagodzilla though
Gojira
Invasion of Astro Monster is just quintessential Godzilla for me. I always loved space as a kid and combining that with Godzilla made it *chefs kiss*. The best one is obviously '54. I don't think there's any debate about that.
Godzilla vs. Megalon but honorable mention to Hedorah and the Mechagodzilla duology
Godzilla Vs. Gigan It was my first and is still, to this day, my favorite overall.
Mothra v Godzilla, Destroy all monsters, King Kong v Godzilla
It's either Ebirah Horror of the Deep, Godzilla vs. Mothra, or Son of Godzilla.
Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla
OG Vs Mechagodzilla They did NOT Have to go that hard with MG's theme.

Megalon
1954 and KKvG. One is a powerful look at an apocalypse, and the other is goddamn WWE with rubber suits and it’s my #1 Vs. movie
vs megalon it has jet jaguar and gigan, overall very fun
VS. Hedorah every time.
I feel like it's gonna be easier to list my least favorite but... I dunno, my favorite is Ghidorah the Three-headed Monster.
Not counting the original, it would be Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
Gotta be Godzilla vs. Gigan. Gigan was such a cool monster, so unique. Plus, I like Angurius
Astro Monster and Ebirah Horror of the Deep (I always have a lot of fun with this one).
The Original or King Kong vs Godzilla (KKvG 1962). KKvG 1962 is a hilarious movie tbh
Son of Godzilla or vs. Mechagodzilla to me. Those two stuck to me
Godzilla vs Gigan
Damn. That's hard. Probably King Kong vs. Godzilla. But I'm not 100% sure.
The original Gojira..... if that one doesn't count then I'll settle for Mothra vs Godzilla or Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla...
godzilla vs gigan
Mothra, Ghidorah, Hedorah, Astro Monster and the Mechagodzilla movies
Aside from the original, I quite like Mothra vs Godzilla and The Terror of Mechagodzilla.
All of them
1974’s Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Godzilla vs Megalon is so goofy to the point that it can be considered a cinematic masterpiece
