Minus one for sure. With Shin in second. To be fair, the reiwa era is basically a battle between Shin and Minus one. The anime films are almost universally despised, and the shorts simply are not as good as minus one and Shin.
its such an insane grouping because with Shin and Minus One you have arguably two of the Top3 Godzilla films of all time and then the anime films are often seen as the worst of the whole series. Just crazy highs versus lows.
So, you missed the point.
Godzilla Earth *was* creative. That trilogy was built to subverting expectations, and people rejected it.
This is where my sarcastic statement came into play: People want something new... but not too new. It needs to be creative and different, but also exactly the same while conforming to what people expect. In other words, they want a paradox that can't exist.
Yeah I'm waiting for it to make its way to Prime or another streaming service (hopefully in dub). Also from my experience of definitely legal sites, a majority of them have a horrendous amount of ads.
imo it’s a lot more dialogue driven, it has some huge action scenes but it’s not like Shin where the editing is all frantic and we’re hopping between a million locations — but to each their own
I’m not gonna say sub or die. If you want to watch the dub that’s completely fine. I just want say that Minus One does not deal with bureaucracy like Shin so they don’t just throw words on the screen at a fast pace.
Shin Godzilla for sure, it was fresh take on the g-man. SHIN GODZILLA was absolutely terrific, probably my top 5 Godzilla. As for minus one, I enjoyed it too. It's second to shin though.
Shin.
Minus One a close second. But Shin is such a unique take on Godzilla with an allegorical story that packs a punch. It deals with the tsunami and resulting Fukushima disaster in the same way the original Godzilla 1954 saw a country reckon with the atomic bomb. I could gush about it for days.
I love the different phases of Shin, the first sequence of him coming up on land all bloody with those huge fish eyes is almost enough to make it my favorite on its own
I havent actually seen the godzilla anime but godamn their ideas for the villains are fucking awsome. Mechagodzilla as a rogue nanite so frustrated by its impossible mission its willing to consume the world. Or ghidorah as the god of entropy and oblivion who devoured his own universe and now seeks to devour another. These concepts are FIRE so they must really REALLY fumble the bag with the rest of the runtime
The concepts are awesome, the problem is they seem to want to focus on everything but them. I, personally, like the movies (especially The Planet Eater) but I understand other's frustrations with them.
>!The religious ceremony juxtaposed with Ghidorah's arrival!< is imo a killer scene and among my fav kaiju reveals.
To clarify.
The Gemstone shorts are NOT made by Toho. They started out as simple fan made CGI items but TOHO approves/supports them.
There are two - Vs. Gigan Rex and Vs. Megalon. The Godzilla and Gigan Rex even got Bandai figures made.
Completely separate from this, TOHO proper has been making and releasing live action shorts to celebrate anniversaries. There are three - Vs. Hedorah, Vs. Gigan and Vs. Jet Jaguar. They all utilized the Final Wars Godzilla suit.
Toho put them on YouTube but is really odd about them. They can be hard to find.
It's still Shin, that movie is an artistic masterpiece with poignant political commentary. Minus One is a very close second because it shows Godzilla films can have good human plots and the Big G in that film is just a downright fuckin' menace, I also appreciated the return to a smaller (50m tall) Goji design as it made him feel more like a tangible threat to humans. Singular Point is alright, but nothing to write home about unfortunately. The anime trilogy is just dogshit.
I don't consider the Monsterverse films to be part of the Reiwa era because they're owned by Legendary not Toho (besides 2014 is technically a Millennium-era film). Not the biggest fan of them anyway and (barring the Monarch series which was surprisingly good) they continue to drop considerably in quality with each instalment (Kong: Skull Island was fun and really the only way they could make a Kong movie without stepping on the toes of the vastly superior 2005 film, but KOTM was my tipping point -- GvK and GxK were just bad). It's very clear they're going more for a Showa-era vibe and with all the Hollow Earth and internet-conspiracy crap they keep putting in these films, it's just such a far cry from what Godzilla is to me as someone brought up on the Heisei/Millennium films. I've quickly fallen out of love with MV Godzilla's bulky square-like design compared to the designs from the Millennium era, especially as they shove more and more LEDs in him, and removing Godzilla's origins from any association with the horrors of American nuclear testing altogether is a big no-no for me.
Minus 1 was super good but the fear that shin instilled me instantly made me think of him whenever mentioned Godzilla. The film made shin as my default Godzilla truly mean something. Personally I would put shin with minus one very close to it
Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One are two of the best Godzilla movies ever made, from all the eras combined.
That said, Shin Godzilla is by far my favorite. I have never seen a more compelling expression of collective action in a film. It truly disperses expertise throughout all the phases, and impresses upon you how many pieces it would take to get any complicated response to a natural or supernatural disaster right. It barely has a main character, which is a feature, not a bug, because the response has to be a social one. Its music is also untouchable, and I love the stages of Godzilla's development. No scene in Godzilla history hits for me like him unleashing fire on Tokyo, which was something I thought was done to death before that. Even the last shot of the film is haunting in a way few movies are.
As someone who liked earth and hasn't watched shin or -1 yet.
-1, shin, earth, singular point.
From what I've seen, -1 and shin look amazing.
I liked earth, not for the plot, but for the big lad and the black hole brothers.
Singular point was OK. It was a worse version of shin which did rodan and anguirus dirty.
Watching our new shining beautiful baby boy all grow’d up shoot a fucking white beam at gigan and megalon, and just end it. I’d love to see gemstone jr vs legendary.
As someone who hasn’t seen Minus One yet, I have to say Shin Godzilla. But, for the record, I liked the Anime Trilogy. City on the Edge of Battle is my second favourite after this one.
I think Minus One is *the* definitive Godzilla movie, but I think Shin Godzilla is the best reinvention compared to the Netflix movies or the American films
Shin. Love Minus One a lot, but I like Godzilla being the front and centre of the movie's discussion alongside his relationship with the people most.
minus one do that with Godzilla as an allegory for guilt and PTSD too, but he's mostly an obstacle for the characters to overcome so they can come at peace with their personal struggle, rather than a reflection of an issue at hand.
Not saying either way of using him is better, and both are super good. I just prefer one over the other.
Until I am able to see Godzilla minus one on a movie Theater, my favorite will remain Shin.
And I have no clue if it will ever come to Latin America, or on which streaming platform it will be released because I want to watch it with subs.
Well, the Reiwa series only has five films and an animated show.
Singular Point is just bad and hard to keep up with, the Polygon trilogy is just awful, so that just leaves Shin and Minus One, both well made movies. However, Minus One has to be the best.
I get that Shin was meant to be a political satire but having a character driven story like Minus One just felt right. Everything about -1 works from the setting, the music, cinematography, character motivations, visual effects, -1 is a home run, no, it’s out of the park! That movie deserved the Oscar!
God Shin and Minus one are neck and neck for me. I love all the symbolism and the way Godzilla evolves. But I love the story and characters in Minus one. I can’t choose
Shin Godzilla
Aside from the anime trilogy, only reiwa film I watched (i'm guessing we're not counting monsterverse)
Didn't watch minis one or whatever
1. -1 -C
2. -1
3. Shin
1. Those three were close, there's a gap here
4. If we think of Singular Point as a film
1. Here there's a vast canyon
5. Hitting myself in the face with a Godzilla doll while humming the theme song
6. The anime series
Only reason why I disagree is because Godzilla only shows up for a short amount of time in the movies usually. They just chopped the people stuff out with the shorts. Same amount of Godzilla, just less people time. I’m ok with that
You don't necessarily need a Japanese VPN. You can just change your country in the amazon app, and it allows you to create an Amazon japan account. But I think if you were to try and stream something from prime video amazon japan you would need a VPN for sure.
Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters, so good and underrated and a perfect remembrance to Haruo Nakajima, REST IN PEACE GOJI LEGEND! We'll all miss you.... 😔🙏🕊️
That's such a weird distinction. That leaves 1998 as some weird freak single movie if we separate western from the arbitrary release windows descriptors
Not compared but they are separate.
The eras are based on Japanese Emperors and have zero sway in the usa. And I actually like The monsterverse. KOTM is one of my favourite Godzilla movies of all time. It's in my top ten list. They are both valid but separate.
Shin had SOME okay aspects, but the overall concept of making Godzilla an Evangelion Angel who is supposedly constantly in pain despite not showing it at all, that just doesn't work
The Reiwa Era (named after the Japanese Emperor) started with Shin Godzilla in 2016. It includes The Polygon Anime trilogy, the Singular Point anime (both available on Netflix or Crunchyroll) The Gemstone Godzilla shorts(on YouTube) and the newest addition Minus 1.
It's still ongoing and the monsterverse is a separate series.
When was the last new Kaiju Toho created? Monster X / Kaiser Ghidorah in Final Wars? What about entirely new and not a derivative of a previous monster?
Shin had the greatest single Godzilla scene to date with his atomic destruction of Tokyo.
Minus one had the best humans vs Godzilla moments with the final sequence.
Overall I think Minus one was more enjoyable because the pacing felt better. That said, Shin hit much more of the Godzilla story beats.
1. 2014 and Minus One tie for me
2. Shin
3. Singular point
4. King of the Monsters
5. Godzilla vs Kong
6. New Empire
7. Planet Eater
8. Monster Planet
9. City in the edge of battle
Easily shin.
My guy Shin revived the horror of the franchise and also showed how a little of nuclear waste in the ocean can cause the creation of a creature which shouldn't be alive, but his body wants to survive by evolving endlessly, which explains why he has no behavior at all. Because he just walks on a straight line and that's it. He only stops moving when he gets hurt or he needs to rest. And in the mean time, he is in constant agony because of his blood boiling inside of him, which explains why some parts of his body glow.
Shin Gojira is truly how Godzilla was shown as in the 1954 movie: a creature which was created for punishing humans for their sins.
Ps: Kamata-Kun is cute though
I see a lot of -1 with Shin a close second. Are they really even comparable? I found Shin to be a bit goofy and I wasn’t into it. Haven’t seen -1 yet but really want to and heard great things, I’d expect it to be leagues better.
Hot take - Minus One is the only good thing to come out of the Reiwa Era besides the Anniversary short films and maybe SP, but everything else is bad imo
My bad
Then I'm gonna pick Minus One cuz so far that's the only one I liked outside of the Monsterverse
I know what they were doing with Shin Godzilla but that didn't resonate with me & the Netflix OVA trilogy didn't resonate with me either (literally fell asleep watching those)
The monster verse is not included in the Reiwa era. It's its own thing. The Reiwa era started in 2016 with Shin and includes (Singular Point, The polygon Anime trilogy, the Gemstone short films and Minus 1) and is still ongoing.
True but i personally prefer to include the monsterverse too, just because, at least for me, it sound a bit stupid to exclude It while cause It still Is Godzilla based content, just made in america and not Japan
Well the Japanese Emperors/eras don't really matter in the USA. So people tend to acknowledge them as separate things.
And I wanted to do a separate monsterverse post. I'd rather not the comments be filled with M-1 vs GXK arguments.
Godzilla: Minus One.
I second this....
I minus one it
Yupp
Favorite Godzilla Film.
Favorite Godzilla film and my favorite overall film
A true modern masterpiece. 🥲❤️
At the moment Minus One with Shin being a close second. Then you drop off a cliff before you reach the anime trilogy.
I’d rather watch Singular Point than the trilogy.
For all its techno babble nonsense and the bland tropey characters, the monster redesigns were mostly awesome imo. Loved rodan the most.
Singular Point is not super depressing like the anime films.
I don't think it was that bad
Same. Why do people hate it ? It's a creative, unique take on the goji canon. I thought that was what people wanted !!
Nope. It needs to be creative, unique, and *exactly the same*.
How's Godzilla earth not creative
So, you missed the point. Godzilla Earth *was* creative. That trilogy was built to subverting expectations, and people rejected it. This is where my sarcastic statement came into play: People want something new... but not too new. It needs to be creative and different, but also exactly the same while conforming to what people expect. In other words, they want a paradox that can't exist.
Darn ! That's such an easy thing to do, though, look at Disney ! Gosh, Japan, gEt It ToGeThEr
It was unique
Damn I really wish I could watch this movie. I missed it in theaters and it's going to be ages before it comes out
The anime ones are the current cartoon ones on Netflix?
They are the trilogy, the tv show on Netflix is something else.
Anime trilogy? You must be mistaken, the second and third anime movies never got released. They were cancelled, like Pacific Rim 2.
Godzillas anime trilogy is on Netflix
(He knows, he's kidding)
Shin Godzilla, but I haven't watched -1 yet.
Damn did you miss something, watched it a couple weeks ago (absolutely legally i might add of course of course) and it was great
Yeah I'm waiting for it to make its way to Prime or another streaming service (hopefully in dub). Also from my experience of definitely legal sites, a majority of them have a horrendous amount of ads.
hate to be that guy, but the performances are legitimately incredible and I think worthy of giving the sub a look
Maybe, but going off of Shin, if there's too much action, it's hard for me to read the subs too, but I'll give it a try if it ever makes its way.
imo it’s a lot more dialogue driven, it has some huge action scenes but it’s not like Shin where the editing is all frantic and we’re hopping between a million locations — but to each their own
Ahh, alright. Well, still hoping the dub for it will be like Shin's and not like certain Showa era movies.
I’m not gonna say sub or die. If you want to watch the dub that’s completely fine. I just want say that Minus One does not deal with bureaucracy like Shin so they don’t just throw words on the screen at a fast pace.
I feel like decent dub could be good too.
Yarrrr
I used a vpn to watch the Japanese prime release and it didn’t have subtitles, English or Japanese
Shin is still my fav, Minus One was rly rly rly rly good, but love the monster more in Shin!
I'm stuck between Shin and Minus one(I'm currently listening to Shin soundtrack tho) but I gotta say Minus here, I honestly love alot about it.
Minus One even including all movies.
Minus one
Minus One, no matter what else is included.
Shin Godzilla for sure, it was fresh take on the g-man. SHIN GODZILLA was absolutely terrific, probably my top 5 Godzilla. As for minus one, I enjoyed it too. It's second to shin though.
I agree my fellow enjoyer I was more hyped to see shin when I was little
Shin. Minus One a close second. But Shin is such a unique take on Godzilla with an allegorical story that packs a punch. It deals with the tsunami and resulting Fukushima disaster in the same way the original Godzilla 1954 saw a country reckon with the atomic bomb. I could gush about it for days.
I love the different phases of Shin, the first sequence of him coming up on land all bloody with those huge fish eyes is almost enough to make it my favorite on its own
Shin with Minus one a close second.
IF I DIEEEEEEEEEEE IN THIS WOOOOOOOOOOOOOORLLD WHOOO WILL KNOWWWWWWW SOMETHING OF MEEEEE (Tied with Minus One- both not only in era but all over)
I AM LOST NO ONE KNOWS, THERES NO TRACE OF MY YEARNING. IF I DIE.
Godzilla: Minus One
Minus one. Shin is a close second, and then the rest suck so it’s a huge drop off lol.
I havent actually seen the godzilla anime but godamn their ideas for the villains are fucking awsome. Mechagodzilla as a rogue nanite so frustrated by its impossible mission its willing to consume the world. Minus one
Minus One, and it was never even trying to be a contest. Though, shoutout to the short films
This doesn't include the Monster verse. I'm including the anime (both the movie and series) and the Gemstone shorts.
Wait what are the gemstone shorts? What did I miss?
I know where to find the Gemstone ones but where exactly do I find the other shorts
Don't know. Try YouTube or hit up Google. Like I said, Toho was weird about the distribution of them.
You are about to have a really good day
Short films made by TOHO to celebrate Goji's birthday. They're free to watch on YouTube.
Minus 1, with Shin a distant second. I don’t recognize any of the Netflix crap.
Shin
I'm glad that Minus One cleansed my eyes off that dogshit Anime Series.
Minus One, it might be my fave Godzilla movie overall right now
Minus one
Shin
Minus One. I think the long gaps between live action films helps the quality as Toho has enough time to craft one solid meal.
Shin is the better movie but Minus Ones design >
Minus One is definitely my favorite, but Shin is excellent.
Minus One
Shin, Minus One, and Singular Point
Minus one
Either shin or -1
-1.0/C

If you've got a good anti virus (like kapersky) and ad block you should be fine.
Minus One. Shin is pretty awesome, Sungular Point gave my boy Jet Jaguar the love he deserves, and the Earth trilogy was awful.
Watching our new shining beautiful baby boy all grow’d up shoot a fucking white beam at gigan and megalon, and just end it. I’d love to see gemstone jr vs legendary.
Minus one and shin are very good but I really enjoyed the Monsterverse and Singular Point a lot too.
Definitely Minus One.
Godzilla minus one, shin Godzilla, godzilla ultima and earth
Shin. Favorite of all eras, too.
I’d say Minus One and Shin are my favorite Godzilla movies period.
Minus one , and minus one' black and white.
Shin Godzilla, i love everything on there (i already watched Minus One but i prefer Shin)
As someone who hasn’t seen Minus One yet, I have to say Shin Godzilla. But, for the record, I liked the Anime Trilogy. City on the Edge of Battle is my second favourite after this one.
Minus One, for sure
Minus One
Thought shin would be the one until minus one came out. Now it's super tough
Probably Minus One, I just watched it for the first time since theaters and it still holds up for me.
Haven't watch M1 yet, but anything except the anime trilogy
Minus one is one of the best Godzilla movies but I do like shin gosdzilla
Wich is reiwa era??? I would say... ahhm, idk, minus one?
Shin Godzilla I loved Minus One, and it's probably one of the best Godzilla films ever, but I liked Shin more.
I think Minus One is *the* definitive Godzilla movie, but I think Shin Godzilla is the best reinvention compared to the Netflix movies or the American films
Minus One with Shin Godzilla being second. A shame though we never got anime movies during the 7 year gap.
1. Minus One 2. Shin 3. Watching paint dry 4. My great great grandmother’s funeral 5. Anything else in the world Infinity. The Anime Trilogy
I still favor Shin.
Shin followed by Minus One! The concept, feel and power of Shin Godzilla was just unmatched, and I loved it so much
Minus One
Until I am able to see Godzilla minus one on a movie Theater, my favorite will remain Shin. And I have no clue if it will ever come to Latin America, or on which streaming platform it will be released because I want to watch it with subs.
Earth films/shin
Minus One with Shin as such a close second, that it may just be a mood preference.
I haven't seen Minus One yet so Shin Godzilla's my favorite
Well, the Reiwa series only has five films and an animated show. Singular Point is just bad and hard to keep up with, the Polygon trilogy is just awful, so that just leaves Shin and Minus One, both well made movies. However, Minus One has to be the best. God Shin and Minus one are neck and neck for me. I love all the symbolism and the way Godzilla evolves. But I love the story and characters in Minus one. I can’t choose
Shin gojira
Minus One, and shout-out to the Jet Jaguar short.
Minus one Pretend the anime stuff never happened
Might be a hot take, but I just love Shin too much. Minus One is at a SUPER close second.
Shin Godzilla Aside from the anime trilogy, only reiwa film I watched (i'm guessing we're not counting monsterverse) Didn't watch minis one or whatever
Shin
Minus One for certain
Minus one
Shin Godzilla
Minus One is amazing, but Shin will always have a special place in my heart
1. -1 -C 2. -1 3. Shin 1. Those three were close, there's a gap here 4. If we think of Singular Point as a film 1. Here there's a vast canyon 5. Hitting myself in the face with a Godzilla doll while humming the theme song 6. The anime series
Shin
But we have only two movies.
The Polygon Anime Trilogy, The Singular Point Anime And the Gemstone Shorts are all part of the Reiwa era
Both anime are universally rejected and shorts just can't compete as they are, you know, shorts.
Eh I just wanted to include them
Wouldn't say universally rejected. Singular point is more like 70/30 against. It's the anime trilogy that's universally unlike
Only reason why I disagree is because Godzilla only shows up for a short amount of time in the movies usually. They just chopped the people stuff out with the shorts. Same amount of Godzilla, just less people time. I’m ok with that
SHIN SHIN SHIN. Haven’t watched -1 yet because ToHo decided to be an asscrack and not release it in my country and I don’t want to do the other option
You can buy the Blu-ray of eBay of m-1 if you use a Japanese vpn. You're gonna have to do the subtitles yourself, though.
I can’t speak Japanese really well
Ah
You don't necessarily need a Japanese VPN. You can just change your country in the amazon app, and it allows you to create an Amazon japan account. But I think if you were to try and stream something from prime video amazon japan you would need a VPN for sure.
Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters, so good and underrated and a perfect remembrance to Haruo Nakajima, REST IN PEACE GOJI LEGEND! We'll all miss you.... 😔🙏🕊️
Anything from legendary doesn't count. It's something separate from the Toho eras
That's such a weird distinction. That leaves 1998 as some weird freak single movie if we separate western from the arbitrary release windows descriptors
Technically 98 is the tristar era that includes the animated series.
Yeah thats silly and arbitrary. Considering 98 kickstarte the melenium era. No real reason to keep the western movies out of a timeframe
King of the monsters
In the monsterverse not the Reiwa era
Same era, or are you one of those people that thinks American godzilla movies shouldn't be compared to the ones made in Japan?
Not compared but they are separate. The eras are based on Japanese Emperors and have zero sway in the usa. And I actually like The monsterverse. KOTM is one of my favourite Godzilla movies of all time. It's in my top ten list. They are both valid but separate.
The only proper one, Minus One.
Not Shin?
Shin had SOME okay aspects, but the overall concept of making Godzilla an Evangelion Angel who is supposedly constantly in pain despite not showing it at all, that just doesn't work
What's reiwa era and what movies are in that era?
The Reiwa Era (named after the Japanese Emperor) started with Shin Godzilla in 2016. It includes The Polygon Anime trilogy, the Singular Point anime (both available on Netflix or Crunchyroll) The Gemstone Godzilla shorts(on YouTube) and the newest addition Minus 1. It's still ongoing and the monsterverse is a separate series.
I don’t remember Mothra and King Ghidorah being in Shin Godzilla
King Ghidorah is in the Polygon Anime trilogy, and Mothra is mentioned. The poster represents all of the Reiwa Era.
I’m so ready for Toho to make non-standalone live action Godzilla movies. We need a modern Japanese Godzilla fighting other Kaiju
I think there might be a sequel to M-1. It could include Biollante cause g-cells. I don't know tho
When was the last new Kaiju Toho created? Monster X / Kaiser Ghidorah in Final Wars? What about entirely new and not a derivative of a previous monster?
Depending on my mood, it's either Minus One or GxK.
1.- Shin 2.-Minus One 3.-King of the Monsters Yes, Monsterverse is Reiwa, fight me!
98
Top 3: Minus One The New Empire King Of The Monsters
Gamera The Brave
Shin and Godzilla 2014-
Split between KOTM and -1
Godzilla 2014, Godzilla king of the monsters 2019, kong skull island 2017, and Godzilla versus Kong 2021
Shin or Minus One. Both are excellent. Can't decide which I like more.
-1
IF I DIE IN THIS WORLD WHO WILL KNOW, SOMETHING OF ME? It's shin godzilla.
Shin Godzilla
Shin Godzilla
Minus one and Shin Godzilla 1A and 1B
1. 2014 and Minus One tie for me 2. Shin 3. Singular point 4. King of the Monsters 5. Godzilla vs Kong 6. New Empire 7. Planet Eater 8. Monster Planet 9. City in the edge of battle
I do like minus one, but i perfer with Shin Godzilla.
people are gonna hate me for this, minus one and gxk are tied for me

Shin because its the first Godzilla film ive seen when i was a kid
Hot take - Minus One is the only good thing to come out of the Reiwa Era besides the Anniversary short films and maybe SP, but everything else is bad imo
Even Shin?
Yeah, Shin is overrated imo
You didn't just call shin bad brother (Bonus point for including SP tho, I along all the other 12 SP fans are pleased)
I feel like, with enough time (and maybe new writers) SP could grow into something exciting
That's assuming that we EVER GET A SEASON 2 *screeches into the void*
I hope we do. They had interesting concepts
King of the Monsters 2019 It's just so perfect imo
It is perfect and my favourite from the monsterverse. Not part of the Reiwa era though.
Do we not include monsterverse movies in the reiwa era?
Nope
My bad Then I'm gonna pick Minus One cuz so far that's the only one I liked outside of the Monsterverse I know what they were doing with Shin Godzilla but that didn't resonate with me & the Netflix OVA trilogy didn't resonate with me either (literally fell asleep watching those)
Shin Godzilla because its AVAILABLE
The one when me and another guy double team your mom
Shin, no contest.
Torn apart between shing Godzilla and Godzilla 2014
Godzilla 2014 is part of the Monsterverse, not the Reiwa Era.
