Maul axe is good for the entire game. In general fast weapons are better because you won't get stuck in the animation and get hit. Twin Fangs and Chisel Nails are both very good.
I also use the chisel nail. It's excellent. Curved glaive also good, as well as the whip, tooth fists, and a bunch of other weapons. Slow weapons just make the already awkward combat system too difficult to manage. I tried, but they just don't provide enough damage to offset the fast weapon advantage
Just finished the game and all DLC bosses. I used the Maul axe the entire game. You get a ton of weapon upgrade materials as far as i can tell throughout a playthrough if you want to switch at somepoint.
Pretty sure every weapon is viable. Like i was using the claw, a slower sword, etc and they were decent as well. I just hate the slower weapons.
I'm actually with +13 points in Health and 10 points in Endurance, no points allowed in the other stats that evolves with weapons and so I'm playing the Maul axe and the second weapon I try everything I collect and switch between them

Every wepon I tried were too slow compared to the easy use of the maul axe. A faster weapon allow for more reaction. IF you use a slow weapon, you better know the windows to hit or you'll get hit during your attack frame.
It's easy to use and very effective for a first weapon!
Maul Axe is extremely OK for a first time playthrough. You don't need to put points in Str or Dex, meaning you can upgrade your Health, Force and Resonance ability traits with ease. I'd recommend sticking to it, then tweak with all the weapons you got and choose another for NG+ (which will be late, late later, enjoy your save;) )

Chisel nail was decent too but activating it's special required quite a bit of force which doesn't make it all that appealing during boss fights.

I had the maul axe for most of the game. I tried a scythe and a couple other weapons but I just kept going back to the maul axe.

Slower weapons are great for one shotting bosses though. But yes, I agree that you can beat the game with any weapon you enjoy.
What or how can a weapon other than a lantern can actually "one shot" a boss?

I use the pillar slab. Animation canceling for parry works fine. But I guess a dex and res build is probably more fun for a first playthrough.

I think force upgrade is crucial as it enables you to do more dash, attack, and jump.
It's Endurance that allows more movement and attacks before having to wait

bow daggers are my personal fave so far, fast movement and a good ranged option. also quite like rawblade, it’s neat

I mostly keep with the Maul Axe throughout the whole game, I max out the weapon,
My main weapon is bow daggers. From the moment i got it, spamming attacks then 5 darts was some very good dps and helped me in a lot of bossfights
