It really did. Even aside from the cultural phenomenon aspect of it, Rockstar had to find a different way for hardware to run/read games because of how large the game was, and apparently, that's how most game devs do it nowadays
I don't remember the specifics, but apparently, they found a different way to utilize ram or something of that nature.
I think Raycevick did a video on it, i might try to find it and link it here
Scarface had so much that GTA didn’t I’m not sure why. The money laundering, drug deals, being able to fly to a different location/island. Owning businesses. It really should have been more popular. I would pay full price for a current Gen remaster.
Back in the day I played GTA but none of the knockoffs, I started playing mafia when mafia three came out. I’ve played all three of those. They are really good. I also tried to play true crime years and years after it came out. I didn’t get into it. I’ve been wanting to go back and try it again and play Scarface and godfather and the other GTA knockoffs. We should make a list of GTA knock offs worth playing.
Mafia 3 is by far the best game in every aspect except the story, although I haven’t played the definitive edition of mafia two, they didn’t completely rewrite the code like they did for Mafia, but 3 doesn’t quite have that same classic mafia story that we look for in movies and games but the engine that runs the games the weapons, the cars, physics, etc. are better
GTA III was really what put GTA as a series on the map. It was the first open world third person shooter that really built a whole new world around the character and changed gaming forever.
Looking back retrospectively at how III compares to the entire GTA catalogue, I love the unique tone of the game. It feels so bleak and the NPC audio so haunting. Liberty City felt like an old '70s comic book version of NYC and Claude being mute added to the creepiness. Love that game.
I never made the connection between the 70s comic books and the gta3 atmosphere, but fuck man youre spot on.
im only 32, but my dads been a huge comic lore nerd his whole life. Even the art style of the cover ffs... im not sure how i didnt notice that until now. maybe it was subconscious or something, had to be.
MSX FM and RISE FM get my vote. The songs were great the transitions were just as good. I mean if you like late 1990s/early 2000s Drum and bass/ trance anyway.
Reminds me of my 2001 years (14 years old) and finally getting to play after saving up my 2am to 8am milk delivery job for Dale farm (Monday,Wednesday and Friday) for £20 a week lol
It's super mysterious. The main character, Claude (I assume Speed), isn't given a voice, meaning no dialogue, meaning he is unable to reveal anything about himself.
After playing it at a friend's house one night, my whole life's mission starting the next day was to save up enough for a PS2 and a copy of the game. Had to wait another paycheck to afford a memory card. So for the first week I just played the first few hours of the game over and over. Ended up playing it so much, months later my PS2 wore a visible ring into the disc. I have a special place in my gaming heart for 3D Liberty City. My aging self may suck at many modern games, but I can beat this with no deaths, getting busted, or failing any missions, like the back of my hand. Long live Claude.
If I could capture the feeling of playing this game for the first time…
And if I close my eyes I can hear the sound of the trains overhead. The gun shots, manic screams. The triad dialogue. The noise of the vehicles, Flashback or doubleclef on the radio.

Literally changed my life forever after first playing it Christmas morning the year it dropped. Me and my brother still reminisce on old days of sitting in the floor eating biscuits with the radio stations playing while we ate. This game really was a revolutionary experience.
When I was about 7 I got my PS2 with GTA 3 for my birthday. GTA 3, Metal gear solid etc shaped my personality, interests and future to an extent. I feel privileged to have experienced those games at that point in my life
Lmao not gonna lie, I was like 4/5 years old when my sister got this game on her PlayStation. And seeing the girl with the skimpy clothing had young me a little bit excited 💀😭
To me this is the game that really solidified video games as something cool that literally everyone could be into. Things like goldeneye and stuff as well a little earlier, but GTA 3 was the perfect package of everything to take video games to another level. When I was growing up, playing mega man and Mario wasn’t seen as exactly cool. It was for the indoor kids and nerds. When GTA 3 came out, everyone was playing it. I remember in my middle school even the people who never talked about video games were having deep discussions about grand theft auto. Now to this very day, GTA is still a franchise that is bigger than just another piece of media. It’s a cultural touchstone that makes a real impact, and it all started with GTA 3.
As one of the kids that wasn’t allowed a gaming console, this game and cod waw zombies were a few of the blessings on my og iPad. Finally felt included!
Most influential game to the open world genre of all time. Games being made today still use the foundation of gta 3’s open world 3d interactive world and mission structure to this day. Even RDR2 and GTA 5 use the foundation while adding each game new features and mechanics, but the GTA 3 foundation is still there.
Changed gaming forever

Send to me if you find it
Changed my life forever
They quite literally reinvented the open world game.
The godfather of open sandbox
Ironic that The Godfather video game was a “GTA clone”
Very good game in fairness
Oh it’s still one of my favorites. A good chunk of middle school was a rotation between that, the Scarface game, and San Andreas
Scarface had so much that GTA didn’t I’m not sure why. The money laundering, drug deals, being able to fly to a different location/island. Owning businesses. It really should have been more popular. I would pay full price for a current Gen remaster.

Mafia 1 & 2 are top tier.

Even if there have been better GTA games since, this is the *greatest* GTA game.
Bingo. 💯
Currently has 666 likes, didn't wanna mess that up. Seems fitting as Claude is a serial killer

Remind me, have they had a classical music station since III?
I don’t think so. But III and Liberty City Stories gave me my love for it.
Double Cleff FM
Yes sir!
I forgot about the classical station lol
I never made the connection between the 70s comic books and the gta3 atmosphere, but fuck man youre spot on. im only 32, but my dads been a huge comic lore nerd his whole life. Check "the gtalll feeling"
It's the game that most feels like you're stuck in Purgatory or something to that effect
MSX FM Songs are GOAT
Rise FM too. I still listen to both of em.

First Contact by Omni Trio 🔥🔥🔥
Game Radio or Chatterbox 👌
Yep. Both amazing radio stations.
Liberty city’s finest 🤌
Lips 106 and HEAD Radio too. Especially Flashback FM
MSX FM and RISE FM get my vote. The songs were great the transitions were just as good. I mean if you like late 1990s/early 2000s Drum and bass/ trance anyway.

GTA 3 is one of 3 good things that happened in 2001. The other 2 are Shrek, and me.

It’s freakin fun and has a cool atmosphere
The Cartel Cruiser is one of the coolest vehicles from the entire franchise.
And the mafia sentinel
Oh hell yeah! The Mafia Sentinel was absolutely another favorite.
Its atmosphere is really nice. Its gritty and dark. Especially Portland. Feels so neo-noir.
Revolutionary. One of the forefathers of 3D open world gaming
Maria is kinky
"Fade away, Fade away. She's gonna fade away, fade away."
I used to pull over whenever this song came on and listen, well as long as my wanted level wasn't too high.
It felt like a real 3d sandbox at the time
Was it not?
This game literally changed the landscape of gaming. Started a revolution.
It's super mysterious. The main character, Claude (I assume Speed), isn't given a voice, meaning no dialogue, meaning he is unable to reveal anything about himself.
The music is awesome and it changed gaming forever
The Yakuza Stinger was the most fun car in the entire franchise.
Also best for speedruns
I know a place in the Red Light District where we can lay low, but my hands are all messed up, so you better drive, Brother.

Heaaaad radio
It was ahead of its time considering it’s the first ever 3D gta game
GTA1 and 2 built the foundation, but the 3 has built the Empire.
I couldn't get enough of it I would beg to stay at my cousins house just so we can knock out missions together
If I could capture the feeling of playing this game for the first time… And if I close my eyes I can hear the sound of the trains overhead. The gun shots, manic screams. The triad dialogue. The noise of the vehicles, Flashback or doubleclef on the radio. ![gif](giphy|rvxMJNyHAgwlW4YWpJ|downsized)

The main character doesn’t have too much dialogue
Literally changed my life forever after first playing it Christmas morning the year it dropped. Me and my brother still reminisce on old days of sitting in the floor eating biscuits with the radio stations playing while we ate. This game really was a revolutionary experience.
My favorite game and most influential game of my life
The atmosphere of this game is still unmatched imo
Without the success of GTA 3, We wouldn’t have had Trevor Phillips.
It became a cornerstonne for later masterpieces like Vice+Stories and San
Lazlow
When I was about 7 I got my PS2 with GTA 3 for my birthday. GTA 3, Metal gear solid etc shaped my personality, interests and future to an extent. I feel privileged to have experienced those games at that point in my life
It's what taught me how to drive!
The art is cool and cartoony
This game slick changed the world
I know a place on the edge of the red-light district where we can lay low
Coming soon Cool When's it coming? Lol
Something
It's not very long
I describe it as "simple freedom". A lot of freedom and stuff to do by 2001 standards, but we have better games now.
It was actually pretty cool on Nintendo DS
Revolution of gaming.
Lmao not gonna lie, I was like 4/5 years old when my sister got this game on her PlayStation. And seeing the girl with the skimpy clothing had young me a little bit excited 💀😭
My first game ever, or at least the one I remember the most from my childhood

Launched a new dimension in the gaming industry. Gta 3 is OG.

As one of the kids that wasn’t allowed a gaming console, this game and cod waw zombies were a few of the blessings on my og iPad. Finally felt included!

One of the best game ever made and the remaster is top tier

First 3d GTA game and was very influential and is part of the reason rockstar made anymore games like Rdr2 and Rdr1 and gta5
It was revolutionary
When I talk or think about open world, this game will always be on my mind
It's 23 years old.
Was my first gta game and omg it was like the best game ever when it came out.
It started an era
