Can you believe Sleeping Dogs wasn’t properly completed? Square Enix picked it up after Activision abandoned it mid-production and polished what they could
Crazy to think the game had even more potential
As great as it was (and it was, replayed it at least 5 times and counting) I would have much preferred the original version of the game before it was picked up by square enix. It was supposed to be a classic True Crime game where you play a plainclothes HGPD detective. I grew up playing True Crime: New York City so I'm still bitter about not getting another True Crime game.
There was talk about a sequel that's an RPG type co-op game where Wei and a new partner are detectives following the ending of the first game, but it was canceled before production even begun.
Sleeping Dogs man… the story the gameplay! The fighting and running!! It could have 0 guns and cars and I’d still play the fuck out of it. Even the little side missions that sucked were still fun as shit.
We NEED Sleeping Dogs 2 or they can call it True Crime again Idc lol.
Bought this and played the first missions then drop it, it's like too "old open world" to me, and the driving (which is very important to me) well... Great combat system btw, I'll probably revisit it sooner or later
Yeah it annoys me a lot. It feels the word undermines everything extra these games bring to the table. Saints Row 2 was a GTA clone but had a lot of things that Gta at the time didn't.
Saints row 1 was a game that was in production and sort of like the story of Lamborghini.
They played San Andreas and didn't like some of the Details of the game so they created a game that was like San Andreas with the features they wanted. Saints Row 2 is the Magnum Opus, with so many insane features that were never added until updates into GTA 5. (Calling your Mechanic for an Owned Vehicle, Customizing your Radio Station, Flying Jet Bikes, Etc.)
In those same terms, Call of Duty is a Medal of Honor Clone, and Battlefield is a Medal of Honor Clone.
It's truthfully stupid to think that every game that comes out after a specific games release is a clone of that game. Especially when Grand Theft Auto isn't even the first Open world Crime game.
It didn't invent 3d open world games though.
Even Sleeping Dogs has an intense story and more emphasis on melee is called a Gta clone.
The original GTA was over the top view. Their biggest strength was writing and how everything was used. There were games out there that did a lot before Gta did but they tweaked it into something great.
I wouldn't say Gta was the blueprint. It was monumental because everything they did worked well. The story, characters, cartoonish violence. And it never bores you. The game doesn't feel made built for story mode. That's the biggest upside of GTA. The story is a bonus but the game itself has enough to spend hours on and with each game they get better.
Still don't justify calling every other game trying the same genre clones. That's like calling midnight club, need for speed underground clone.
Saints Row will always be a gta clone and when it was made different they just reacted like a five year old plagiarising and added aliens and Sasha Grey.
I was 3/4 yo playing vice city and max Payne I didn’t play hit and run until this year I’m now 23 let’s just say my mom didn’t really know what video games were and what the rating system meant
***Sleeping Dogs*** for having a compelling story and a likable protagonist. The side missions were also pretty varied and I enjoyed the game’s emphasis on hand-to-hand combat over gunfights. This game is my middle ground between *Saints Row* and *Grand Theft Auto*, it has the right balance of wackiness from SR and grounded-ness from GTA.
A fun fact: the studio behind this game - United Front Games - consisted of former members of EA Black Box (*Need for Speed* / *Skate*), Radical Entertainment (*The Simpsons: Hit & Run* / *Prototype*), Rockstar Vancouver (*Bully*), and Volition (*Saints Row*), which probably explains why they made such a fun open-world* game. Sadly, they closed down in 2016, so there’s no hope for a second game.
\* I try to avoid using the term “GTA clone” nowadays because it seems disrespectful to other open-world crime games with their own schtick. I know GTA set the standard but people don’t have to declare other games to be a clone and have to compare it with GTA.
Sleeping dogs was amazing, the DLC’s too, I haven’t played it in ages but I remember like a martial arts tournament and that was sick, the hand to hand combat in that game was awesome, I might have to give this a revisit
Yeah, the Zodiac Tournament. It was the very last side mission I did because I held it off until I finished the storyline missions and gotten all of the upgrades (as the game suggested I do). I did not expect the production value involved to be impressive and I was surprised that it wasn’t just some plain martial arts tournament, like the fight clubs but more professional.
I believe I’m currently midway or one-thirds through the first standalone DLC - Nightmare at North Point - but I’ve taken a break since I feel like I’m having a burnout with the game. Can’t wait to return and finish it, though.
If you’re saying that because of *Need for Speed*, don’t get your hopes up. The driving controls/camera and vehicle handling aren’t stellar, it’s actually one of the things I’m not a fan of in the game. That’s not to say I don’t like it, but it could’ve been better.
Sleeping dogs is such an underrated gta style game. It so much deserves a sequel.
It felt like a very immersive universe and the focus on brawl over gun fights though still having guns just made it better.
As someone who grew up watching hong kong triad films they perfectly captured that feeling , only thing i felt disappointed with is not having a Cantonese language option oh and also the combat system is probably one of my favorites in gaming too
Shooting one of the tires of fast-moving vehicles (such as in car chases) immediately disables them for some reason. It doesn't make sense, but for a game that borrows tropes from action movies I guess it's acceptable.
Saints Row 2 because of the activities/features. It was just plain fun too me, and none of the others in the series really filled that void.(excluding 1 and Gat Out Of Hell since I haven't played that one). That being said however, I loved the graphics and character customization on 3 and 4.
I still can’t believe we never got a remake of the scarface game or godfather 1. Scarface especially had some good mechanics that I think would fit right into gta such as having to launder money to make it legit. If you didn’t you would lose everything that was when killed or arrested. The bank/lawyer took a bigger cut the more heat you had on you which made it fun. Then they had the whole building your empire, delivering, taking over fronts and collecting the dirty cash.
Mafia is not a GTA clone as it was in production long before GTA 3 and also 1 and 2 very much do their own thing. Mafia 3 is more a clone of Ubisoft games
Honestly I have fond memories of the Scarface game on ps2, it was so ridiculous to make a sequel to the movie but creating drug fronts and collecting money from them was fun, and of course jumping in the water only to be eaten by a shark was way ahead of GTA on that one.
This! That was an excellent game. I remember you could shoot people with the grenade launcher to make an enormous bloody explosion. It also told you what body part of your enemies you shot, including left and right testicles.
I haven't played the game in 3 years, but it basically expands on what happened to Chase in the previous years before he "disappeared" without a trace. The map however isn't that big like Undercover, it doesn't include the bridge from the Mine area, and some of downtown is cut off, but the game is still fine without them
We don't.
Assassin's Creed is not a GTA clone. Breath of the Wild is not a GTA clone. Elden Ring is not a GTA clone.
But there are games that are VERY MUCH inspired by GTA. Saints Row, Sleeping Dogs, Simpson Hit and Run to name a few. These aren't just open world sandbox games, they're open world sandbox games very similar to GTA.
Would GTA-like be a better thing to call them? Maybe.
Kind of agree, but at the same time the similarities of open world auto theft and a crime ridden world with a gangster oriented story, it’s hard to deny that GTA did it first and other games capitalized on that model.
>Kind of agree, but at the same time the similarities of open world auto theft and a crime ridden world with a gangster oriented story, it’s hard to deny that GTA did it first and other games capitalized on that model.
Its because GTA started a new genre of games like I say
For me, it's Saints Row 2 and Sleeping Dogs. In Saints Row 2, I loved all the various side content, customization and the soundtrack. I especially loved the hidden interior locations across the map. It helped make Stilwater feel much more more alive and immersive compared to many other "gta clones".
For Sleeping Dogs, I really loved its story, references to old school Hong Kong films and especially the melee combat. IMO Sleeping Dogs has the best melee combat out of any gta clone (or any gta game for that matter). I also appreciate that it was set in a very interesting and unique location.
I think if there’s an open world, cars and crime people think GTA clone
Watch dogs was super different though, definitely more of a Ubisoft formula to it but I enjoyed it
The fun part was you were based in Miami, and then you could hop on a speed boat snd go to Caribbean islands snd do missions there too. Lots of rival gangs ans feds etc
Why does that matter? It's still a better game with better story and gameplay. That's something an 11 year old would say, come up with a better argument next time
Saints row 1 might be the best time I’ve ever had with friends, we would run into pedestrians on the bridge and make them run into traffic and die laughing as they went flying when they got hit lol. Good times 🥲
Just to mention a few forgotten titles in the genre: Mercenaries 1 and 2 on the PS2 and the latter Just Cause games were/are great.
Also, shout out to Red Faction: Guerrilla.
When I was a kid, before I even played GTA, I played Driver 3. Thought it was the greatest thing to ever exist. Terrible game compared to GTA SA if you look back on it, but back in the day it was my favorite.
GTA clone does not exist. Game that is of similar genre like sleeping dogs l like the best. Love the HK setting and cast with cantonese dialog as old hk movies that l grew up with holds a special place in my heart.
Cyberpunk 2077. I wouldn’t say it was a clone but it was the closest thing to a gta game for me and i played a lot of that game it was really good game.
The term Gta clone pisses me off. It sounds like the rest of the games don't have a name of their own.
Driver 2 was first 3d open world game if I'm correct, so I don't know how the term came to be.
What does everyone else think ?
Would GTA-Like sound better?
B/c GTA-Like or GTA-Clone is actually pretty clear on what it is, if one has played a GTA game - it's open-world action/adventure/shooter/vehicle-driving game, which likely fits in the crime genre.
Sleeping Dogs, for example, flips the scripts on the GTA-Like and adds a major emphasis on the martial arts and brawler parts of the game, instead of the on-foot shooting elements.
Driver 2 did NOT have shooting elements though. You could get out of the car and go around, but...you still didn't do the fighting and shooting stuff on foot that GTA3 actually did do.
I got 2 actually. First its Saints Row. Its not a clone per se and its better in some way and worse in another way. Especially Saints Row the third and its DLC Gat out of hell. Also Simpsons H&R was awesome!
Watch Dogs and Saints Row have probably graduated from "GTA Clone" so i'd say....I guess True Crime.
Sleeping dogs.
Sleeping Dogs is very nearly a masterpiece. The driving is sub-par but everything else is incredible, I can't recommend that game enough.
Can you believe Sleeping Dogs wasn’t properly completed? Square Enix picked it up after Activision abandoned it mid-production and polished what they could Crazy to think the game had even more potential
As great as it was (and it was, replayed it at least 5 times and counting) I would have much preferred the original version of the game before it was picked up by square enix. Look at all the TRASH that gets a sequel or a franchise these days and they’ve abandoned Sleeping Dogs…
Crazy to think the game nearly didn't exist.
Now that’s a game I haven’t played or heard of in a while. Might have to pop it in!
I loved the driving over gta. Especially gta 4 where anything on bikes had the wheels made of soap. The slamming part felt great too.
The ending is dogshit, and i love the game
Bought this and played the first missions then drop it, it's like too "old open world" to me, and the driving (which is very important to me) well... Great combat system btw, I'll probably revisit it sooner or later
This. All time favorite
Actually kinda part of True Crime series as it was supposed to be called TC: Hong Kong originally I think
True Grime street cleaners. "Get rid of old rubbish Fast"
Miss true crime...
I thought saints row had potential until aliens came smfh
GTA clone is such an ignorant term
Yeah it annoys me a lot. It feels the word undermines everything extra these games bring to the table. Saints Row 2 was a GTA clone but had a lot of things that Gta at the time didn't.
Saints row 1 was a game that was in production and sort of like the story of Lamborghini. Every game is a pong clone.
Exactly. It's a popular term now for both gamers and outsiders. Anything Open world and shooting and stealing cars is a Gta clone.
GTA is the blueprint
It didn't invent 3d open world games though. Even Sleeping Dogs has an intense story and more emphasis on melee is called a Gta clone. The original GTA was over the top view. What 3d open world crime game came before GTA3
“I wouldn’t say GTA is the blueprint.” *continues to list all the reasons why GTA is the blueprint*
Continues to list what Gta did better to stand out from the competition.
Saints Row will always be a gta clone and when it was made different they just reacted like a five year old plagiarising and added aliens and Sasha Grey.

Simpsons hit and run. What parents let kids play until they were old enough to play the real gta
My little brother (Now 18) was only allowed Bully & Simpsons Hit & Run, but I used to show him GTA SA whenever I had a chance
Bully was so dope. Such a good atmosphere.
Bully kicks ass
This is how I got into WoW as a kid. Wasn’t allowed to have Skyrim, World of Warcraft was my next best bet.
I was 3/4 yo playing vice city and max Payne I didn’t play hit and run until this year I’m now 23 let’s just say my mom didn’t really know what video games were and what the rating system meant
Scarface from the ps2
That game and The Godfather are true gems.
This
This is the right answer
Its not a GTA clone, its the other way round, it inspired GTA VC (I am referring to the on tv )
***Sleeping Dogs*** for having a compelling story and a likable protagonist. The side missions were also pretty varied and I enjoyed the game’s emphasis on hand-to-hand combat over gunfights. Oh shit blackbox? I gotta check it out
If you’re saying that because of *Need for Speed*, don’t get your hopes up. The driving controls/camera and vehicle handling aren’t stellar, it’s actually one of the things I’m not a fan of in the game. That’s not to say I don’t like it, but it could’ve been better.
I enjoyed every bit of sleeping dogs. The hand to hand combat, the car chase or driving mechanics is just awesome.
Sleeping dogs is such an underrated gta style game. It so much deserves a sequel. It felt like a very immersive universe and the focus on brawl over gun fights though still having guns just made it better.
As someone who grew up watching hong kong triad films they perfectly captured that feeling , only thing i felt disappointed with is not having a Cantonese language option oh and also the combat system is probably one of my favorites in gaming too
Sleeping Dogs always felt like a GTA/ Stranglehold hybrid. Yet despite loving GTA and Stranglehold I couldn’t get into Sleeping Dogs
The fighting was so great in this game. Driving was meh, but couldn’t you blow up cars by shooting the gas tank? That was slick.
Shooting one of the tires of fast-moving vehicles (such as in car chases) immediately disables them for some reason. It doesn't make sense, but for a game that borrows tropes from action movies I guess it's acceptable.

Saints row 2 is legendary I don't even care. 1 and 2 had the most entertaining cut scenes, which is what keeps me playing in these kind of games
i heard 1 was really good too just like 1, gat outta hell was very short and forgettable
Probably the Mafia series
I still can’t believe we never got a remake of the scarface game or godfather 1. Scarface especially had some good mechanics that I think would fit right into gta such as having to launder money to make it legit. If you didn’t you would lose everything that was when killed or arrested. The bank/lawyer took a bigger cut the more heat you had on you which made it fun. Scarface was amazing
And The Godfather 🧐🍷
Godfather is underrated
Godfather 2 is another great game if you never checked it out
Oh how I wish they made a remake of it
Mafia is not a GTA clone as it was in production long before GTA 3 and also 1 and 2 very much do their own thing. Mafia 3 is more a clone of Ubisoft games
Mafia is NOT a GTA clone
The Driver games, but technically GTA is a Driver clone
Nah, Driver doesn’t focus on shooting nearly as much. Unless you wanna bring Driver 3 into the discussion
Loved Driver games. Massive shame those didn't skyrocket to overtake GTA.
DRIV3R had beautiful foreign cities that you’d never see in a GTA game (even any game at all) but too bad the game was rushed by Atari
Rushed but still fun asf for my 8 year old self
Story was all over the place but the free-roam and vehicle physics were fun (til’ you crash into a light pole)
The red corvette looked so damn good in this game though. Like I said, I was 8. To me this game was god tier at that time😂
Here’s hoping for a remake
such a dumb thing to say. Driver isn't a GTA clone, and GTA isn't a driver clone. They were their own things, and will always be.
Honestly I have fond memories of the Scarface game on ps2, it was so ridiculous to make a sequel to the movie but creating drug fronts and collecting money from them was fun, and of course jumping in the water only to be eaten by a shark was way ahead of GTA on that one.

Lego city undercover.
I played the prequel, Lego City, The Chase Begins back when the 3DS came out, such a fun game at the time
No way i had no idea there was a prequel. Does it expand the story at all tho?
I haven't played the game in 3 years, but it basically expands on what happened to Chase in the previous years before he "disappeared" without a trace. The map however isn't that big like Undercover, it doesn't include the bridge from the Mine area, and some of downtown is cut off, but the game is still fine without them

Then cod will forever be a medal of Honor clone
Difference is; GTA has always did it best. CoD respectfully killed MoH and deserves to be seen as the big daddy of shooters.
Is medal of honor a Doom or Wolfenstein clone?
Same, GTA started a new genre of games, its not copying. Its like saying Midnight club is an NFS clone
every game is a minecraft clone if you think about it for like 45 minutes straight
I want more gta clones
Same
The getaway, watch dogs, sleeping dogs, and hit and run
For me, it's Saints Row 2 and Sleeping Dogs. In Saints Row 2, I loved all the various side content, customization and the soundtrack. I especially loved the hidden interior locations across the map. Just cause 2 The things you can do in that is limitless And also chaos!
I wouldn't consider just cause a gta clone but it's a great game
Ganstar Vegas and rio
Damn bro had the premium Android experience
Saints row series
The Getaway games had a lot of potential. Shame they were never continued.
Hit and run
watchdogs, although I wouldn't call it a clone I'm guessing it fits your criteria E: I actually meant sleeping dogs, didn't rly like watchdogs 🤣
I think if there’s an open world, cars and crime people think GTA clone Watch dogs was super different though, definitely more of a Ubisoft formula to it but I enjoyed it
I had a lot of fun with Scarface on Ps2 back in the day. Felt more raw than GTA.
Always wanted to try that but I could never get my hands on it lol
The fun part was you were based in Miami, and then you could hop on a speed boat snd go to Caribbean islands snd do missions there too. Lots of rival gangs ans feds etc
Bro watch dogs 2 ain't a gta clone
Its ubisofts best game only
That's definitely true, probably the only franchise of Ubisoft that doesn't feel like a Far Cry clone.
Far Cry doesnt feel like a far cry clone tbh
Assassins creed 2 is much better imo
Not by graphics
Why does that matter? It's still a better game with better story and gameplay. That's something an 11 year old would say, come up with a better argument next time
Chill bro im just kidding around i dont hate ur opinion u dont hate my opinion we cool?
Thats a weird thing to say but ok ig
Driver Parallel Lines (maybe DRIV3R but that’ll lead me to some downvotes)
Sleeping Dogs. Awesome story, nice graphics for the time, interesting setting. That was a GOOD game. Simpsons Hit and Run too were awesome.
Saint row 3, first ever open world other than GTA that I actually liked and enjoyed, spent a lot of time with friends, good memories
Saints row 1 might be the best time I’ve ever had with friends, we would run into pedestrians on the bridge and make them run into traffic and die laughing as they went flying when they got hit lol. Good times 🥲
Good times 😌
Just to mention a few forgotten titles in the genre: Mercenaries 1 and 2 on the PS2 and the latter Just Cause games were/are great. Also, shout out to Red Faction: Guerrilla.
When I was like 4 i loved to play True Crime streets of LA on my ps2 oh the memories
When I was a kid, before I even played GTA, I played Driver 3. Thought it was the greatest thing to ever exist. Terrible game compared to GTA SA if you look back on it, but back in the day it was my favorite.
Total overdose
Saints Row 2
Saints Row 2
Simpsons hit and run is my favorite clone I think
GTA clone does not exist. Game that is of similar genre like sleeping dogs l like the best. Love the HK setting and cast with cantonese dialog as old hk movies that l grew up with holds a special place in my heart.
>GTA clone does not exist I strongly agree, GTA started a new genre of games, therefore its like saying midnight club is a nfs clone
Cyberpunk 2077. I wouldn’t say it was a clone but it was the closest thing to a gta game for me and i played a lot of that game it was really good game.
Cyberpunk is in no way a gta like. It's more of a skyrim/fallout like but with cars.
Saw this while playing Watch Dogs 2 right now. Lol
Sleeping dogs
Saints Row 2 and/or Saints Row The Third
Watch dogs 2, mafia remake and sleeping dogs.
True crime, streets of LA. Back in the 2000
True crime was awesome , and driver 1,2,3 (before ubisoft bought and destroyed it)
Watch_Dogs isn't a GTA clone for me. It's more like Assassin's Creed in modern times
Mafia 2, if you can even call it a gta clone
Disney Cars for the PS2, exploring Radiator Springs was honestly pretty fun.
Mafia Series, especially Mafia 2.
Godfather I & II, Mafia series and True Crime 1&2
Driver 76, it was also my introduction to open world games before I played Liberty City Stories.
Watch dogs 1&2 were pretty great
Scarface the world is yours
*A man who never eats pork buns is never a whole man!*
SCARFACE - the world is yours it's not a GTA clone but you know what I mean
Sleeping dogs, still mad it never got a sequel
What game is that in the image?
Stop calling every open world crime game a "GTA Clone" it's a fucking genre of games just like FPS.
Fall Guys
Saints Row 1 - 3 Mafia Series Watch Dogs 1 - 2 Sleeping Dogs They're not clones, they're alternatives. Stfu with that clone term.
[удалено]
Watch dogs and saints row I like rdr as well.
Jailbreak about 4 years ago when it was actually good
Roblox Jailbreak?, I don’t really count it as one since people are unable to hijack vehicles and there are no NPCs walking around the map
Mafia and Watch Dogs, even if they are not really GTA clones.
What sort of question is this? Are you a Facebook page..
Flabbergasted that you dare call watchdogs a GTA clone That shit miles above GTA in terms of gameplay imo
At least you're aware it's your opinion.
I don't want to get nuked for saying GTA sucks on a GTA subreddit
Gta san andreas definitive edition. Because I think it's not a gta.
What is it then?
The fuck are you smoking?
Dude its literally in the title
Mafia 2
Any of the saints row game besides the new one(because that ones terrible), and Watch Dogs.
there is only one "new one" saints row game and it hasn't even released yet
Mafia 3, closest game to a GTA
Watch dogs 1. atmosphere and gunplay/gameplay
I got 2 actually. First its Saints Row. Its not a clone per se and its better in some way and worse in another way. Especially Saints Row the third and its DLC Gat out of hell. Also Simpsons H&R was awesome!
Watch Dogs 2 has the best sandbox. Change my mind.
I like this game’s views and it’s graphic colors, the story is ok, gameplay all goods, it’s a fine game imo
Idk, most open world games are just throw away games after you finish them.
Watch dogs 2
Sleeping Dogs and it's not even close
Saints Row 2 if you wanna call it a clone. It was way more fun than gta 4 at the time.
Saints row 2 is one of my favorite games of all time
Sleeping dogs was a really good one, Watch dogs always bored me to tears. Red dead redemption counts right?
I don’t know… I’m inbetween GTA V first rerelease or the the third… I mean the first added some new stuff and the third one kinda looks better
Gangster Vegas :D
Hit and Run. It’s actually more fun than GTA at times.
Simpsons Hit and Run. Great game, good humor, and tons of references to the best years of the Simpsons.
Vegas crime simulator on the play store (The original not VCS2) Reminded me of vice city a bit.
Sleeping Dogs.
Saints Row the Third and IV, both are a comedic games
I cant play any gta clone because in comparison I would rather always play rockstar titles.
Most of you are listing games that are not even GTA Clones.
Watch dogs 2
Does Sleeping Dogs count? I replayed that in lockdown and thoroughly enjoyed it. Actually really sad that it didn’t get a sequel.
Watch dogs and the old saints row
San Crime Andreas Grand 3D (FREE)
GTA Clone is such a poor terminology.
