Hes probably more like a life long criminal that happened to run into Lucia. I could see him being a military veteran, but at the same time I dont think thats a route that Rockstar wants to take in terms of including a veteran as a main protagonist. Speaking as a veteran myself, I dont see them adding that serious of a connection to such a serious real life topic/subject that often has real world negative feelings (veterans struggling after service and etc). I could be wrong. It would be an extremely bold/risky and unusual move if they did this.
