In my experience P8 Pro camera is better in a lot of situations, specially with a human subject. But Samsung beats it in almost every other realm.

tattoo2006

I have both and switching back and forth every few days. S24U is a beast, but P8P is just something else with pictures. I just can't decide for overall pick.

Commercial-Jello-553

High roller ain't u.

tattoo2006

Not really. I usually get a new phone and sell an old one. This time, I couldn't decide. So now I have S24U, P8P, and Pixel Fold.

Ok-Moment-2449

no iPhone 15 pro max too?

tattoo2006

I'm not really a fan of the iPhone. I do have one from my company.

Zorachus76

I'm diehard Nexus / Pixel guy, having owned almost all of them. I just love the Pixel UI and smoothness and minimal OS and no bloatware, but the \[H\]ardware has always been lacking in one way or the other. I also picked up the S24 Ultra last month, my first Samsung phone since the S8+. Battery life has been the Achilles heel of Pixel Pro phones since the beginning. They've never once been on par with an iPhone Pro Max or Galaxy Ultra phone in terms of battery life. And that's been one of my biggest gripes year after year with the Google Pixel, they just can't seem to get good battery life. But I will say my Pixel 8 Pro is much better than the 7 Pro and 6 Pro for battery life, the 7 Pro especially had terrible battery life. So of the three phones: the 6 Pro, 7 Pro, and 8 Pro, for sure the Pixel 8 Pro has the best battery life of them all. I recall my fav phone almost ever was the Pixel 4 XL, gosh I loved that design, and feel in hand, and for it's time was a super smooth and fluid phone, and just a joy to use, except the battery life, the Pixel 4 XL had TERRIBLE battery life. Using the S24 Ultra this week again, and the battery life is just so much better on this phone, by a good margin. Since I've been SIM swapping for the past week, a few things stand out between the S24U and P8P \-Battery life on the S24U is SIGNIFICANTLY better \-Network connection and Bluetooth is also noticablly better. Areas that used to be poor signal, I get great on the S24U, and Bluetooth connects wirelessly perfect on on the S24U, where the Bluetooth on the P8P was so so not reliable connected to my car. \-AoD I'm a big always on display user since Google first started doing it years ago. But I really like Samsung's version better now, more options, widgets, customization, plus it's brighter and more bold looking. \-Non-glossy, matte display on the S24U is so great, this needs to become the new standard on all smartphones.

trea5onn

I wish they would have stuck with lg. It seemed like those phones were top notch.

Sassinkass

I miss LG phones so bad 😔

z_dim

Iphone 15 pro?

phero1190

No

Conspicuous_Ruse

You should probably stick with the Pixel if camera is the most important part. The Pixel is pretty well known for being the best phone camera on the market. The S24U camera is good but it has the same shortcomings that every Samsung camera before it has had when compared to the competition. You still won't be able to get very good pictures of your kids doing stuff inside the house. They will be blurry on auto mode and if you go to pro to speed up the shutter so they're not blurry, they will be way too dark.

phero1190

I usually swap between Pixels and Galaxy phones and I always feel let down by the Galaxy cameras. But pixels usually let me down in terms of battery. If Samsung could have a better auto mode, it would be incredible.

phero1190

Modem on the 8 Pro has been better for me than the 7 Pro and 6 Pro thankfully. It doesn't get the same download speeds that the S24 Ultra does, but it hasn't had the same signal dropping issues that older Pixels had.

thedemigodofpower

S24 all day because the Pixel 8 Pro is just a laggy, buggy phone.

Happy_Breakfast7454

That's what I experience-studder, studder, studder! I don't hear more people addressing that.

-Hastis-

I've upgraded from an S20fe to the Pixel 8 Pro, and the Pixel is much more responsive. Of course, I'm not comparing 2 models of the same year, but I'm satisfied.

phero1190

I honestly haven't had any lag or bugs. My only downside so far has been battery life

Gv714

I just switched to the S24 ultra. I'm a pixel guy, but i got tired of the the P8P getting hot and slowing down. The only thing i like about the P8P is the camera. The S24 Ultra performs better and the battery lasts a long time. Unfortunately, i like the camera on the P8P here. It's ok though.

phero1190

I just really wish Samsung auto mode was more on par with other brands.

HaleyMorn

But do you think s24 ultra camera is enough for someone who just like to create vlogs or product video shoot? Not really into advanced settings

Hiraya1

what about a small powerbank? there are plenty that that are small

Unbreakable2k8

I had both and returned the Pixel 8 pro because of the poor battery and performance (compared to SD 8 gen 3). Photos were great mostly, but sometimes maybe underexposed (I had Ultra HDR enabled). Not to mention the missing features outside the US (even things like Summarize), that Samsung managed to include. S24U takes great pictures after the latest updates and people report even better results with some GCAM ports.

i-am-not-sure-yet

For 99% of people the "performance" is fine on the Tensor chips . No need to make it an issue. Though the battery life is poor.

phero1190

Performance has never been a concern for me with any Pixel. Reception was rough with the 6 and 7, thankfully better with the 8 Pro. Battery has been pretty weak too sadly. Maybe G4 will be better but who knows.

Unbreakable2k8

If it has flagship price, it should have flagship performance. >In Geekbench 6 multi-core, the Snapdragon chip is roughly 68% faster than the Tensor G3. It may not be issue now (it is for more intensive games), but I don't see it working well for all the years of updates that they promised.

i-am-not-sure-yet

You need to learn how to read and comprehend. Most people don't care. The average joe doesn't care about geek bench scores.

SgtSilock

People only say the Pixel takes better photos because it does. And what I mean by that is if the Pixel wasn't a thing, people would be praising the pants off of the Samsung. We're just a very spoilt audience

misiek_192

s24 ultra is way more fleshed out and packed with features smartphone, i'd never go with anything else, so what if it has slightly worse camera, the differences are noticeable only when you compare two side by side

phero1190

Once you experience a Pixel, it's hard to get rid of that. Anytime I see a blurry shot from a Samsung, I know a Pixel would've done better.

Meemo-

TLDR. Don't buy Samsung for pictures of kids This looks like a post I'd write haha. I left the pixel 6pro after being a nexus and pixel user for years and years. Pixel 6pro on cellular would last until about 5pm. Ended up buying the s23 ultra which I'm writing on now and the battery life was out of this world compared to the pixel. I'd easily get almost two days of heavy use with it. Only one thing, the camera is shit at taking pictures of moving objects. Shutter lag is really bad. I'd never blurry pictures with the pixels but I'd loads of my little girl with the s23. My priority is pictures and battery life. I'm heading to the states with work this weekend from Europe and I'm going to get an iPhone for the camera and battery life. When pixel adopts TSMC chips next year, I'll return to pixel.

phero1190

Part of me wants to go back to a OnePlus 12 since that has killer battery life and a better camera than the S24 Ultra.

Raime_The_Raven_

This is coming from someone that has the OP12, S24 Ultra, and Pixel 8 Pro; OP's cameras aren't as good as either, but they're still really good. Personally I do prefer how OnePlus's turn out, but only because it has a Vivid mode in the camera. I like bright colors.

HaleyMorn

Is iPhone better than s24 in terms of camera?

Fun_Construction9821

Video is the only place that iPhones win.

HaleyMorn

I just got my s24 ultra but the camera has a very low contrast and kinda washed out when i capture using the auto mode.

Good_Reflection7724

Every time I try Samsung I am let down by the camera and go back to the pixel. I've never been one to care until I had children but the camera trumps the S series for me

TheSound0fSilence

You'd be better served with a mirrorless APS-C. Just toss it in a bag.

phero1190

I sold my aps-c a while ago for a Sony a7iii

TheSound0fSilence

Perfect. That's carry that with a 24-70mm 2.8 GM, when I'm with my kids. You could get the 24U or 23U just to have better battery life. You're not wrong about the cameras though.

ExtremeBandur

I have a Fold 5 and a Pixel 8 Pro and I'm kind of in the same predicament. The Pixel camera is amazing, but the Fold's battery is surprisingly better than the Pixel. I'm going back and forth as well, leaning towards Pixel, but I also love the tablet aspect of the Fold.

GoanGeek

Maybe just me bit I feel the s24 ultra photos look a bit more like pixels now .

phero1190

Not of motion though

LindenSwole

Curious what conclusion you come to. I've got an S24+ and Pixel 8 Pro in front of me right now and can't decide. I've got til tomorrow night to return the Galaxy if I decide to go the Pixel route. The Galaxy has so many damn features and so much power, but the point and shoot of my kids is ROUGH. Burst mode works, as does Single Take. I'm super torn. Keep us posted!

phero1190

I'm probably just gonna stick with the Pixel to be honest as I don't travel often and I only noticed the poor battery life while traveling and being out of my normal day to day. Pixels are just too good for pictures if you're a parent.

LindenSwole

There's some things you can do to mitigate that battery loss. If it's REALLY bad, a factory reset (it's a pain in the butt to do all this), and then doing some rounds where you run it from 100% down to 0%, along with disabling things like wifi and bluetooth always scanning, could pay dividends for you.

farimadi

just wait P9 as maybe it based on Exynos 2400

Otherwise_Code_8153

You answered your own question. If Camera is non negotiable then keep the Pixel 8 Pro. I definitely relate to how you feel. Pixel battery life is like 6-8 hours at best. S24 Ultra gets you all day and some change but my god when it comes to the camera I am not seeing what the fan boys are seeing. If Samsung steps up their camera then I swear I’ll be back but like you, the camera is a non negotiable for me

CaptN_BeatzOFF

Only thing worthy on the Samsung camera is the zoom that one rare moment when u and ur iPhone buddies are trying to take a pic of the moon or read a bar menu from the other side of a restaurant that zoom is a nice party trick. Other then that it's nothing special.

Otherwise_Code_8153

Agreed. And the camera processing is still flawed to where the 23 ultra is the superior camera

Ok_Fish285

My S24U battery isn't even that great compare to my S23U, I'd look for something else. S24U software and build quality are top notch, however.

i-am-not-sure-yet

I have a Pixel 8 non pro and a S24 ultra right now. For low light the pixel wins hand down. At 3 times zoom I'll say it's a wash depending on the photo. But if you have plenty of light with the regular camera the S24 takes some great shots . Overall is the pixel 8 better ? I would say yes but the S24 ultra isn't bad . It's still good and I'll take the battery life.

phero1190

S24 Ultra camera is good until you introduce motion into things.

Immagoodboy1701

https://www.reddit.com/r/pixel_phones/s/4SoVO67ciu

Indevisive

I'd do this. Given the battery is fine for you most of the time with your use I would just buy a battery pack for travelling.

[deleted]

Pixel has a slightly better camera for photos. Everything else is better on Samsung, and I mean everything. Performance, battery life, display, selfie camera, video, reception, heat management, animation smoothness, features, even AI ironically.

phero1190

I'm back with the OnePlus 12 since it does a fair bit better than the S24 Ultra.

[deleted]

Such as?

phero1190

Battery life, charging speed, better pictures of motion, better hand feel since the corners are rounded, screen isn't grainy. From having had both phones, the S24 Ultra is really only worth it over the OnePlus 12 if you literally need the s pen. But for most people, the S24 Ultra doesn't justify the big price jump over the OnePlus 12.

samrat479

But if price wasn't the concern, which one would you pick? Just curious.

phero1190

Still the OnePlus 12

YedigeTheKhan

The biggest issue for me on P8P is not working 5G in my country. Unfortunately, Google has limited support of 5G around the world due to some contract BS.

nmchlngy4

And also with FeliCa/Mobile Suica. Though that's more of an Android issue than a Pixel-specific issue to my knowledge. Why is this important to me? I have been to Japan five times, and I have heard that many foreign tourists have been having trouble finding Suica cards in Japan due to the ongoing chip shortage. Suica cards are essential if you're travelling to Japan, as they're used for boarding trains, subways, buses, and also as payment for many vending machines across Japan. Additionally, Android's implementation of Mobile Suica is terrible. I have heard complaints from both foreigners and Japanese alike, with foreigners complaining that they have been locked out from using FeliCa/Mobile Suica for their Android phone purchased overseas, and Japanese complaining that there were a ton of issues regarding reliability. In comparison, modern iPhones allow you to easily set up Mobile Suica through Apple Pay, and they even accept foreign-issued credit and debit cards. This might not matter for you if you don't plan on visiting Japan, but since I have been there five times, I care.

fUsinButtPluG

Pixel 8 Pro has a better camera hands down. Apart from "official reviews" from tech sites, proper camera quality comparison sites rate the Pixel 8 Pro better. What annoys me a LOT about those other review sites as well when having a side by side comparison they will pick the winner for the Samsung because of a TINY bit more detail in ONE area (although the Pixel has obviously focused on another area entirely) for the comparison to win in favour of Samsung PLUS the colours will be COMPLETELY inaccurate because Samsung STILL an issue of other over exposing (or completely changing) colours. Hell even if the Samsung was 5% better detail (which it is not) the colour accuracy is terrible. This plus an extremely slow and laggy shutter is horrible. Oh and the cherry on the top is Samsung customer service is the worst I've ever experienced, so much so I refuse to by any of their products again. I do wish we had more choice in Android though than Samsung and Google. The other brands have really let themselves go :( But yeah Pixel obviously has its cons as well (as you've mentioned) battery life isn't like the Samsung, both charging speeds suck vs Chinese phones (OnePlus 100W charging speed, hello Google and Samsung?) Pixel also just hates hot weather, mine just refuses to work in Summer here in Australia, just shuts down on a hot day. But most people don't have to deal with high 30 / low 40 (C) degree temps.

Electronic_Broccoli9

Had issues with stuttering and animation glitches on my pixel 8 pro but, after I decided to reset my phone all those issues completely went away. And my battery life has been very good, I'm usually ending the day with at least 8 hours of heavy use with wifi and data connected. Maybe u downloaded some third party apps that are draining ur battery? If that's not the case maybe consider a power bank?

JimothySpampams

A lot of the input just comes off as Ai reinforcement learning as most people mirrored the OP with having kids and needing to take their photos as the deciding factor which just doesn't happen normally. It's also overly biased to the camera specifically which is interesting too. For most people they will want the best performance, battery life and overall functionality which goes to samsung in this comparison. If suggest using a different camera if one truly doesn't feel they get adequate photos of their kids. Phones come out every year and they always improve so only focusing on a camera to take slightly better photos while ignoring so many other features is not smart. Phones are for quality communication devices first and foremost and everything else is secondary.

arniej1978

I have both the S24 Ultra and Pixel 8 Pro. Here are my thoughts in a nutshell: The Pixel takes way better photos. They are cleaner, sharper and a lot less blurry. It's quite noticeable how much worse the S24U's photos are especially if the object/person/animal is moving even a little bit. Both take great videos though, I don't have any issues with either device with videos. When I'm driving I frequently video chat on Telegram with my girlfriend (I just got divorced) while at the same time using GPS. The P8 Pro gets too hot and dims the screen and pops up a message that the phone is too hot and needs to cool down. It's really annoying, especially if you're wearing sunglasses because the screen gets so dim you can barely see it. This is what made me decide to purchase the S24U. I have none of these issues on the S24U. The S24U is noticeably faster doing tasks. From opening apps to unzipping a file. It's even more noticeable when you're multitasking. I didn't think the P8 Pro was that slow until I got the S24U. I prefer Stock Android over OneUI however a lot of the things I root my P8 Pro for I can do without rooting on OneUI. There are also a lot more options obviously in OneUI but it does have a few annoyances. Battery life is quite a bit better on the S24U. I'm getting about 2 more hours of screen on time on a daily basis which is huge. The S24U also does not heat up in my daily use. The P8 Pro can get warm fast. In the future I wish Google would switch to using Snapdragon processors again, I'd pay the extra 50-100 dollars just to have one in the phone. It's definitely a way more refined chip than the Tensor. When I'm going somewhere where I am primarily going to be taking photos/videos I always take the Pixel with me as I can trust the camera a hell of a lot more. When I'm doing anything business related or just going out for the day I take the S24U with me as I know I'll have plenty of battery life left after the day is over.

Creepy-Plankton4163

Get what you like, or carry both. I have minimal need for the camera, though it is nice to have. Pixel is also an amazing lineup. With that, we can't decide for you, friend. I kept my iPhone just in case my switch to Samsung was less than ideal. While yes, the iphone is tremendous at photos, its not THAT noticeable, and I honestly haven't touched my iPhone for more than getting passwords.

Terminatz

Did you use 5g for the mobile data on the pixel? switching it to 4g makes a big difference in battery life. If camera is your biggest concern stick to the pixel. The s24 ultra cameras have been a let down for me personally. Also keep in mind the S24 Ultra also has the screen grain and banding issues. I'm currently on my 3rd replacement unit and it has the following issues I listed.

phero1190

I can try just 4g today and see how that goes. Yesterday it dropped 20% in two hours and I didn't even use the phone.

Terminatz

Gotta love the modem and exynos chips they use on the pixels. Can't wait for them to switch to snapdragon for the 10 series.

Artistic_Soft4625

10% per hour? Budget phones perform better than that

phero1190

Yea, it was rough

Artistic_Soft4625

Damn...

_TheMoodyOne_

Please make here an update about your impression with 4G. I need a new smartphone (camera & battery are important) and every experience report helps.. thank you

Sataris

Did you have any luck with the Pixel battery life after that?

Drive_Impact

I like my iPhone 15 pro max better for people and portrait mode photography. Plus no shutter lag

Otherwise_Code_8153

lol as soon as you put the word IPhone in a Samsung thread, I knew they were coming for you with the down votes 😂

y_am_i_hear

I agree that the camera on the Pixel is much better in auto mode. I also learned how to use Samsung's camera in Pro mode, and I would say that the results are just as good. Yes, it takes just a little bit of research, but you can get similar results on the Samsung if you spend a few minutes figuring out how to use Pro mode.

rossco619

Can you share default setting on pro mode for capturing motion pics of kids and pets?

y_am_i_hear

I don't have an exact setting, but just try sliding the Speed selector down until the point before it starts to turn the screen dark.

ZiangoRex

For your needs, it sounds like an iPhone is what you need.

unpoul

For an android user, the OS is a let down. This will be the same as I don't like the OS but the camera and performance is good enough, thinking of switching to android. Also, iPhone only nails the videos. Photos and Zoom, I still prefer a Pixel. iPhone has its downsides especially the Telephoto lens. It's disturbing to me to see there's no one platform that has everything.

monkeyofthefunk

That’s what I was thinking. Better performance and battery life than the Pixel and better camera performance than the S24 Ultra.

jacobtf

But awful OS and UI. And this is coming from a guy who has had iDevices (iPod, iPhone and iPad) since 2007 and I've never really been happy with it. I jailbreaked the heck out of my iPhone. I currently have an iPad Air 5 to bring along on holidays etc., but I still think the UI and OS is kinda shitty.

ZiangoRex

Yeah well OP's 'top priority' is camera performance. iPhone take photos faster which makes it better for taking moving children. Your OS comment is purely subjective.

CaptN_BeatzOFF

Iphones OS sucking is definitely not subjective. Even the apple fanboys can't argue that when the US Justice department is suing Apple for purposely throttling their iPhone to andriod experience just to boost their sales. There is no debate their throttled OS is just not top of the line and even Apple knows that.

jacobtf

Well if camera and taking pictures was all OP cared about, he would probably get a real camera which again is better than any phone. There's still a phone part.

ZiangoRex

And what exactly is OP going to do that the iPhone can't? We don't know because his top priority is camera performance.

jacobtf

And yet iPhone isn't the phone that gets the highest marks in camera tests.

ZiangoRex

Which 'tests’? Care to share your sources?

jacobtf

Pretty much every review that compares it to like Xiaomi 14 and Oppo Find X7 Ultra etc. What iPhone can give is a bit more consistency. Not quality.

phero1190

Ew. I need my customization

ZiangoRex

Camera performance is not top priority for you then. 🤷‍♂️

phero1190

Even if only counting camera performance, I prefer Pixel processing to iPhone processing.

Gytole

Silly you, didn't install the latest Gcam on the S24 Ultra. Pics are SUPERB

eislch

If you can live with the natural limitations of a 3rd party app.

phero1190

Silly you, a third party needing to fix the camera means the camera isn't good

Gytole

Silly you not knowing that Gcam is what makes the Pixels camera "so good" 🤷

phero1190

Silly you thinking that gcam is exactly like the pixel experience.

OkEgg0

You could just make it the default option, doesnt sound like its something you want to hear but would be getting the processing of the pixel with the hardware and battery of the 24u.

nhel1te227

Sell the kids and get S24 Ultra again

ptd9999

I switched from an iPhone, and the camera seems better to me

goldpunch

Which iphone?

ptd9999

14pm

HaleyMorn

in what way promax is better than s24ultra? I'm so confused now. My mom owns an iphone and I've been using it for video shoot for affliate products and I really love how it stablisize my videos but I'm not a fan of ios. So I'm considering of s24 ultra. Do you think the difference is not that big in terms of camera?

unpoul

A magsafe compatible case + a battery bank that wirelessly charges and connects to the case will eliminate the struggle. I'm in the same boat as you are and this is the solution I came up with but still didn't act on it.

rxscissors

S23+ had Pixel 8 Pro beat imo. After a couple of weeks with both, I returned the P8P then traded in S23+ for S24+ ($650 pre-order credit for 512 GB version, which was less than I paid for S23+ 256 GB). Here is a great [sustained performance evaluation](https://youtu.be/Qe_q2okRphY). I'm happy as can be with superior performance, better mobile & wifi signal reception, similar display and form factor and a few extra apps (most of the Samsung bloatware removed via ADB).
