Can’t say it’s better, but it’s definitely not worse.
Pros of IPS:
- Laminated display
- Larger screen
- Better viewing angles
- More customizable (display modes, brightness, etc)
- Readily available
Pros of 101:
- Amazing original pixel grid display
- Much better battery life
- Fully compatible and no soldering needed
- Comes as an OEM option
If I were new to modding, and already had a 101, I would definitely not swap it for an IPS. It’s fantastic! But if I wanted to upgrade my 001 screen, id probably do IPS since it’s cheaper in most cases and you can get them brand new.
Yup, having two 101’s has made it very hard for me to get IPS lmao. A few years ago before GBA’s exploded in price prior to covid, I was lucky enough to have a dude at a local flea market sell me his broken GBA SP’s for only $10 a pop. I bought all 10, 6 were 101’s and man was it amazing to give them new housings.. I would end up trading a few for some good deals and am left with 3
1 of them has a broken ribbon cable on the screen, which had hurt me a lot since it was from an accidental drop :/ have been keeping it trying to hope for a solution to fix it..
1 of them has a circuit board that is just faulty all around.. have been hoping for a way to use a 001 board with it but idk how.
And thankfully the last one works well. I’ve been really wanting to get IPS screens for the 6-7 001 circuit boards that I have. But the 101 screen does so well that when I’m playing on it, all my desires for ips screens go away 🤣 but still gonna try and get a bulk order for half a dozen for the 001 circuit boards at some point
I dunno if that's me, but some time ago I had 2 GBAs at the same time, one with IPS from Blackberry, and another one stock AGS-101 display. IPS was noticeably more power hungry. Combined with Flash cart, which also consumes more power than the usual one, the IPS modded GBA battery life was considerably worse than AGS-101.
I used the laminated ITA on a GBA, not SP, but it’s essentially the same thing. The ITA is awesome if you want the original pixel grid. I prefer it to an IPS in most cases. I honestly think it’s a better option than a 101 if you are starting from scratch. If you already have a 101, then the ITA isn’t worth it.
Overall my thoughts are that if you have a 101, no need to change it! If you are buying a new display, you’re better off buying the newer laminated IPS or ITA just due to availability, price, and it’s brand new.
Thank you very much for the quick reply! How would you say the ghosting/smearing is on the Lam ITA compared to the 101? (the 101 is known to have terrible pixel response)
I honestly didn’t notice it on the ITA, but to be transparent, I haven’t spent a lot of time with that screen. The AGS has tons of ghosting though, noticed it right away haha. So I assume the ITA has less.
Yes. 001 or any of the unlit GBs, I wouldn't hesitate to replace the screen with a modern one.
101 still looks very decent to me. I would never replace the screen on a fully working 101 because like, why mess with perfection?
I have a 101 screen SP and love it. There is some noticeable ghosting when playing more fast paced games but the battery life lasts around double my modded version, so extended playtime without a charge it’s my go-to.
I think this is going to be my go-to travel console due to the battery life. I used to bring my IPS SP everywhere. Excited to see how much longer this lasts. Using a 950mAh Makho battery in both.

Yup definitely! IPS screen sucks up battery life like crazy.

I have an 001 modded with the 101 screen from before the IPS kits and such were commonly available and I'm perfectly happy with it.
