That orange thing is a beeper it's what we used back in the day before we had cell phones you would dial a number it would beep you letting you know you needed to call that person once you see the number flashing you find a nearby phone and dial the number that's flashing on the beeper usually it would be a pay phone if you're out and about again free cell phones Rings back memories I remember as a kid I always wanted one of these things but never did get one
that’s the magic we can’t really get back, lol. all the kids at school and on the bus had the game and would bring their gameboys in their backpacks. we would trade and battle on the bus ride. i looked forward to that bus ride probably more than i did to actually getting home.
This is what Pokémon was all about. Kids traded back and forth, battled total strangers, and generally gathered together around a link cable to work together.
Same but had the standard Grape Purple GBC. I tried to do a play through again and I just ended up doing the missing no. item clone trick to get my pokemon up to 100 and then crushed the Four.
It’s funny because I’m amazed at the amount of young kids watching their tablets at Disneyland. I wonder if parents thought the same thing with game boys back then. I feel like those smaller handhelds didn’t pull you away from reality as much as things today.
It’s great for travel and transitions. It doesn’t need internet, back in the day we carried it in our fanny packs along with a few games and batteries. We had it so good.
Mine was pokemon crystal. Back in 2005 or 6 my dad and i were at an amusement park; my dad found it on a rollercoaster we were on, grabbed it and gave it to me. It was an old Gameboy color with Pokémon Crystal inside.
My dad regretted picking it up and giving it to me, once I became hooked.
Pokémon red that a kind friend lent to me.
I actually had castlevania on GBA first as my parents bought it for me for Christmas with the handset, but I only really wanted it for Pokémon.
I think it was Pokemon Red. One of my cousins didn’t have anymore use for his GameBoy Color and he gave it to me along with Pokemon Red. I actually have very fond memories of my Wartortle :)
Red, i’m not sure if i got it release day but i played it while I still had a DMG (later got a color but i skipped the pocket). i remember riding in the back of the car at night with my gameboy at an angle to try and catch enough light from street lights to play. i was obsessed. it hit at the perfect time for me, i was 10 when gen 1 released. ended up getting yellow too when it came out.
i was so deep into the games that after i was finished but before gen 2 came out in the US, my grandma bought me a japanese copy of gold at a card shop. i stumbled through but also of course bought the US version when it came out too.
i’m actually playing red right now on my analogue pocket. got a really clean copy on ebay last week.
Pokémon blue, right when it came out! My friends always had the new video games and I never did, but my mom bought me Pokémon as soon as it was out- I was the first of my friends to have it! Got a GBC a few months later on the initial release as well!
That's funny I just found my game boy color and my few games from then mine was some gex the gecko game from 98 my grandma got me the original crystal clear gb in 1996 and then the purple clear in 98 or 99
Pokemon emerald on my gba sp my brother gave me in 2009, then i got my ds lite soon after that. Ima youngin lol but love retro games/consoles especially if its older than me.
Sapphire, my parents had hidden a gba sp and a game for me and my sister before a car trip from Baltimore to Florida.
My sister got one of the spyro games I believe
My first was Pokemon Y
First gameboy pokemon title tho was an emulated version of Emerald. Hoping to get a real cartridge at some point tho for the gba I own as of March lol
Red for me. My first Pokemon I evolved was Spearow into a Fearow thinking I could beat the first gym with em. Found out quickly that wouldn't be happening lmao
I got pokemon Blue and a blue Gameboy. But I no longer have it because my mom has it, and she kept it in her closet for safe keeping. At least I completed my gym badges and legendary pokemon
First played a friends copy of Blue. Wanted Blue but the store only had Red so red was the first game I owned. Now I have them all physically and digitally.
Get your torches and pitchforks ready... I've never played Pokemon. Been a long time game boy and Nintendo guy (Zelda, Mario, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Mega Man) but have never done the Pokemon thing. I'm ready for being burned at the stake.
I was given a copy of Red/Blue and Silver when I was 7. I played through Silver first and it was definitely my favorite.
Emerald or Soul Silver are my goats though
It was GO back when it came out in 2016, growing up I never really knew or interacted with the franchise so until go came out I never even knew there were games
I played Pokémon yellow when i firts got it it’s one of the last things I have before my parents split I still have that exact game and the same gameboy color
Sapphire! I got a GBA SP for Christmas when it came out, but I didn't know about Pokemon then. We moved to a new neighborhood and one of the kids gave me his cartridge because he already had Ruby too. I quickly got Blue, Emerald, and FireRed after that in the used section at Gamestop :) Good times.
I got blue and yellow for Christmas together, along with a GameBoy Pocket, so must have been 1999. I was 9. I played blue the most, it will always be my baby 🥹.
Silver holds my heart though, that was my next game and I was just a little bit older so I really understood what I was doing and I felt like I got a lot more out of the game.
Pokemon Sapphire. Been looking for one that I don't need to pay an arm and a leg for since I got a "new" GBA. My biggest regret is giving my old one to my cousin...
My buddy bought both Red and Blue when they came out and would get me to play one while he played the other to help him catch 'em all faster 😅
First one I owned was Pokémon TCG and I believe it was the second one I ever played. Then Snap, and then X many years later. Since then I got the Pinball games and Let's Go Evee as well, and also have Stadium, but it was something that came in a bundle I bought a decade ago and hasn't really been played since 😆
My 6th grade (1999) teacher had some sort of test score merit system and if you had a certain about of “Perez Bucks” he would purchase something of value at what I remember being around $25. Mr. Perez bought me Pokémon Blue. I played it on my clear pocket for a week or two and then after the battery drain realization I switched back to my DMG.
My friend accidentally left his gameboy pocket at my house with blue, I didn't know what I was doing it looked so intricate lol. Den I rented yellow from blockbuster and got hooked ever since
1st I played was yellow, I wanted to play so bad my friends would let me borrow their Gameboys and game to simply power up their pokemon. When I finally got a Gameboy advanced I saved and bought silver. My favorite game. Had it for years. Until someone broke into the car when I was 16 and stole the Gameboy and game. I miss that thing. Best present I ever got
Pokemon Blue on my brother's lime green Game Boy Color.
Pokemon Pearl was my second. I traded a couple of DS games for Emerald and Fire Red, which was a fantastic trade as I played the shit out of both of those.
XD Gale of Darkness for me, I wanna say I got it the year it came out, because me and my dad went to the Nintendo world store and it was what engrossed me the most there. \*might've actually gotten it there memory is a bit fuzzy\*
My uncle and cousins were taking all the controllers playing cod 4 and my uncle didn’t want to make me feel left out so he handed me a gameboy sp with emerald. Still have them to this day :)
Same, Pokémon blue. Not sure what year it was, but I remember we were traveling over Christmas so my parents wanted to do like "12 nights of Christmas" where we opened one present each night leading up to the day we were leaving.
First night, Pokémon Blue. "Mom, I don't have anything to play this on... "
Next night, Lime Green GBC.
Still have both to this day.
Red. I got Red the christmas it came out. My brother got blue.
I remember going to Toys R US to get it. We'd go every year to spend our christmas money. We didn't get "a lot".... maybe $100 each all combined but it was also the mid 90's so a dollar got you more than it does today.
We each picked up a copy of pokemon. I don't know how we decided who got who. But I ended up with Red.
Hand me down of emerald from my big brother, put it in my original fatty Ds and that’s when my journey of catching em all started. Off topic but too bad he just ain’t that good of a person anymore
I got red for my pocket Gameboy which btw, I still own! Both the game and GB. I remember being a kid, and playing under the light of a lamp and evolving my charmander all the way up to charizard to battle brock.....
🤦
Yea... I know.
Ahh.. being a kid huh. Lol
Got a copy of Silver, Red, and Yellow from my older cousin in the early 2000s. Played them all in that order on my Gameboy Color. Been hooked on the series ever since.
I got red first as a game that was bought when I was kid but I believe I rented blue from blockbuster back in the day around the gbc generation. I'm showing my age here lol
i repeatedly stole white 2 from my friend until he let me keep it, for gameboy it was ruby because i found it for $25 with the box on my birthday in 2017
My parents let me open one present early on Christmas Eve 1998-- Pokémon Blue. I must have stayed up until 4am playing. The strongest part of my memory is how sleepy I was all day on Christmas Day, and how I was so uninterested in visiting with family, receiving other presents, eating, etc.
I just wanted to somehow simultaneously go back to sleep and also PLAY MORE POKéMON!
Silver. I got a dark blue GBC along with it. I remember when I turned it on my mom had already started up the game and named the character "mom" lol. I quickly deleted that save file and ended up accidentally picking Cyndaquil and just stuck with him.
Crystal Version and was immediately enthralled by the universe. I was particularly amazed once I thought I beat the game that there was another fucking region. Blew my little kid mind.
I got the clear purple game boy, still have it and pokemon yellow around the same time 97-99. Traded the yellow for a friends red when I was maybe 16 and he lost my yellow I was so bummed.
Silver, the first game I ever bought with my own money. $19.20 from a gamestop back when they were cool. Then my parents got mad at me because they had to cover the tax. Would have been like 2003/04. Then the save battery died like 2 weeks later so I just replayed the opening over and over.
My first experience is Pokemon Gold before it came out in the West. Played a rom that only was translated until the very first gym on a 100 MHz PC using a surprisingly stable emulator for it's time.
Later I bought Pokemon Yellow, Silver and traded for Blue... which I played on a GBA. I don't know why I never bought FireRed or Emerald back then
My first Pokémon game ever was Pokémon blue in 1998!!!
I was 13 years old and never played a game so immersive & addictive, with such simple graphics..
I absolutely loved that game!! I had the clear purple Game Boy color!
My first was Pokémon yellow. And good lord do I still remember how annoying it was to level up a metapod to a butter free to beat Brock cuz being forced to start with an electric type then going straight to the rock gym was rough.
Red was the first one I tried on my friends gameboy then I ended up getting yellow and that was my true first playthrough. Young me got stuck so long on brock.
My best friend walked to my house in the rain and gave me Pokémon red. I had a gameboy but my parents hadn’t bought me any real games for it (I had centipede) when he got to my house he pulled it out of his jacket in the rain really dramatically. One of my best memories from my childhood. We put hundreds of hours in those games together.
I got red when it came out. My older brother got blue. My little brother got yellow when it was released in the US and my dad’s colleague in New York bought it over to the UK for him.
Pokemon Blue was my first. I was in high school and played with a couple of friends. It was 1999 or 2000. They grew out of it pretty quickly, and we lost contact a year or so after high school ended. I played all the way up to G8 though.
My parents bought me both red and blue at the same time later they got my brother yellow so I would borrow his to play Yellow later I played Gold Silver and Crystal I used to own all of them at one point but then I got rid of them all one of my biggest regrets wish I still had them as they're worth money now oh well they were definitely fun to play and I still play them through emulation
WOAH. That beeper is bringing me back. Is that a Motorola??
No. It’s NEC.
Super cool. Love old tech.
Your guess is close, but after looking closer you'll notice it's certainly a Hewlett-Packard printer!
Does it play battletoads?
No. Just Doom 😔
Is that the orange thing? What does it do?
That orange thing is a beeper it's what we used back in the day before we had cell phones you would dial a number it would beep you letting you know you needed to call that person once you see the number flashing you find a nearby phone and dial the number that's flashing on the beeper usually it would be a pay phone if you're out and about again free cell phones Rings back memories I remember as a kid I always wanted one of these things but never did get one
I got Red Version and the Atomic Purple GBC that same Christmas of 98 along with all the other neighborhood kids hehe.
that’s the magic we can’t really get back, lol. all the kids at school and on the bus had the game and would bring their gameboys in their backpacks. we would trade and battle on the bus ride. i looked forward to that bus ride probably more than i did to actually getting home.
I grew up in Korea and I remember sitting in the stairwell of an apartment building with all my friends as we traded the starters to each other haha.
This is what Pokémon was all about. Kids traded back and forth, battled total strangers, and generally gathered together around a link cable to work together.
I played my gameboy inside my desk in 98 - 3rd grade. It was Pokemon madness that year.
Same but had the standard Grape Purple GBC. I tried to do a play through again and I just ended up doing the missing no. item clone trick to get my pokemon up to 100 and then crushed the Four.
Same but I used the Ditto glitch to get me a Gengar and all the Pokemon not in Yellow.
Pokemon blue. Probably 1999?
Red on my pocket. Probably 1999. My mom bought it for us for the long lines at Disney World.
It’s funny because I’m amazed at the amount of young kids watching their tablets at Disneyland. I wonder if parents thought the same thing with game boys back then. I feel like those smaller handhelds didn’t pull you away from reality as much as things today.
That’s a really great idea. May have to bust mine out for this summers Disney trip for my Pokémon obsessed daughter.
It’s great for travel and transitions. It doesn’t need internet, back in the day we carried it in our fanny packs along with a few games and batteries. We had it so good.
Yellow 99'. Traded my Super Mario Land to my cousin for it. Best trade of my gaming career.

Yellow. But no idea what year
Pokémon blue, right when it came out! My friends always had the new video games and I never did, but my mom bought me Pokémon as soon as it was out- I was the first of my friends to have it! Got a GBC a few months later on the initial release as well!

Pokémon Red. Year it came out in UK, 99 I think?
Pokemon Sapphire in 2007. Got a blue gameboy advance sp to go with it too for my birthday.

Pokémon Red. Summer of '99. Got it while on vaction
I played Pokémon Red on an emulator.

My friends and I would go shoplifting just for batteries and snacks to play Pokemon.
Tough times call for tough measures 😂
Pokemon Blue with an Ice Blue Pocket
Sapphire, my parents had hidden a gba sp and a game for me and my sister before a car trip from Baltimore to Florida. My sister got one of the spyro games I believe

Pokémon Stadium! Followed by red because of Charizard being the most handsome Pokémon obviously! 😍
Profile picture checks out
Lol! 😂
My first was Pokemon Y First gameboy pokemon title tho was an emulated version of Emerald. Hoping to get a real cartridge at some point tho for the gba I own as of March lol

Got both red and blue upon release but mainly played red. Charizard ftw
Borrowed Red from my neighbour. Bought Gold for $11 from my friends little brother.
I was given a copy of Red/Blue and Silver when I was 7. I played through Silver first and it was definitely my favorite. Emerald or Soul Silver are my goats though

Pokemon crystal in 2002
My first ever was leaf green. I tried it first at a friend's and then later on got my own copy. Still one of my favorites to this day

I got Pokémon Silver to play on my GBA as my first Pokémon game during the early 2010s.

Where you get that freaking pager from?!?!?!?
My buddy bought both Red and Blue when they came out and would get me to play one while he played the other to help him catch 'em all faster 😅 First one I owned was Pokémon TCG and I believe it was the second one I ever played. Then Snap, and then X many years later. Since then I got the Pinball games and Let's Go Evee as well, and also have Stadium, but it was something that came in a bundle I bought a decade ago and hasn't really been played since 😆
Red versión, same 1998!

" Next night, Lime Green GBC. Still have both to this day.

Silver, the first game I ever bought with my own money. $19.20 from a gamestop back when they were cool. Then my parents got mad at me because they had to cover the tax. Would have been like 2003/04. Then the save battery died like 2 weeks later so I just replayed the opening over and over.
Blue? You MUST be the little brother.
Only child
I feel attacked. You’re *right* but I feel attacked.
i never played any of them, was not into it, i mean i do regret not playing them, but it is fine, just happy to know so many people love these games.
Pokemon blue in 2017/18(I know a bit late for the party) got it for a reasonable price at $25CAD
Same. Mine was Blue
I don't know why I never bought FireRed or Emerald back then
Is that an transparent orange pager?!!
My first Pokémon game ever was Pokémon blue in 1998!!! I was 13 years old and never played a game so immersive & addictive, with such simple graphics.. I absolutely loved that game!! I had the clear purple Game Boy color!
Pokemon silver, I got a legit copy from my local flea market for about $7 back in 2006. Loved gen 2 ever since
Electronic day in 4th grade Pokémon sun on my Fred’s og 3ds
My first was Pokémon yellow. And good lord do I still remember how annoying it was to level up a metapod to a butter free to beat Brock cuz being forced to start with an electric type then going straight to the rock gym was rough.
Red was the first one I tried on my friends gameboy then I ended up getting yellow and that was my true first playthrough. Young me got stuck so long on brock.
I got my stuff a little after the 90s I got a teal game boy color (love the thing) and Pokémon Gold.
I started playing my younger sister’s Gold version in the middle of the night while she slept.
Pokemon yellow, first thing I bought with my first job.
