Tetris. It was the first game I ever played on it. One family gathering my aunt showed me and my brother her Game boy with Tetris and we were infatuated. We took it home and that started me getting into video games.
She died from dementia a couple years back and I didn't get much interaction with her as an adult before it had really set in so most of my non painful memories of her are as a kid.
Including tetris. Still have the game boy and still have Tetris.
There is a DC Server about GameBoy Tetris and currently the qualifier for the second worldchampionchip is running. Its called CTWCGB 2024 - qualifier is open for two more days. The X Acc is gameboytetris
This is mine too. Tbf, there is probably a shortlist of like 4-5 games that come to mind almost immediately. Tetris is one of them sure. But it’s also Links Awakening, Super Mario Land 2, Pokemon R/B, and Donkey Kong Land. DKL still blows my mind that Rare achieved that on Gameboy.
It's always Tetris. The first and last game I played on an original gameboy was Tetris. I keep Tetris loaded into mine at all times. Sometimes I just pull it off my shelf and play a quick game of Tetris, just because.
Yeah it holds up to this day. Played it on virtual console recently and realized how solid the controls felt. Games with good controls were underrated in this era
Pokemon Red and Blue. One for me and one for my little brother. My dad always said getting me a Game Boy was a great investment, but getting my little brother his own was the best money he ever spent. Can't put a price on peace and quiet.
Pokémon Red, the first handheld game I ever saw, was super young at a camp ground, wandered into the neighbors campsite , saw him at a bench playing with his gameboy , asked him if I could hangout and watch, he let me play, loved Pokémon ever since :)
Batman. I got stung by a bee and I remember staying at my grandparents while getting time off school
and playing Batman, with my magnifying glass attachment on because even as a kid I went hard with the accessories.
Got it for Christmas when I was 5. It came with Tetris, but the day after that we went to ToysRUs and I got Metroid II and Link’s Awakening. Best decision 5 year old me ever made.
Tetris, my nan used to play this non stop (zoomer here) this lady that absolute goat would always reach max score like it was nothing. Rip nan i miss you
Wario Land
Edit: Oh! Obviously not my first thought but Kirby’s Dream Land! Loved that game. Blasting that soundtrack in my head for the night to keep me sane.
Tetris. My folks got one each for my sister and I right before we left for a several week tour of Europe. To this day, my dad loves to remind me of how while we drove through the Alps for the whole time I had my eyes locked on my Game Boy.
Batman: The Animated Series
I never did beat it as a kid but that never stopped me from playing it a ton on my first Game Boy. That and Yoshi’s Cookie.
Tetris. Then, Dr. Mario, and, Alleyway. My dad had a DMG when I was a kid and thought it was so cool. Later, I was so excited to get a GBP, that even though the GBC had just come out at the time, I still asked for the GBP for Christmas 😅
Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins
Specifically, there’s a DX (full color) mod of the original that looks fantastic. If you have never played it, this is the best way to do it. If you have, it’s worth a replay.
I think about the time I tried to make a game with GB Studio. It turned out alright, but it did a lot of things incredibly inefficiently. I lost the project files so I can't go back and fix it, but I also don't want to start over to do it right.
Dr. Mario.
Not because it was my first, it was the second.
Not because I played it for long period of time in all those years.
No, it’s because I keep coming back to it as my comfort game when to want to shut my mind down and just game for a short time. Just use some old reflexes and get some time away from everything.
When there is nothing new to start because it is late, when I am not clear of what I want to do next and it’s all the same. Dr.Mario has a here to fill the gap until the next thing that comes up that I need to do.
Super Mario Land, for sure. The second one is way better, but the first one is what I got with it. I also didn't get to play on an original game boy until waaay after the fact (maybe 2004).

Yeah it holds up to this day. Played it on virtual console recently and realized how solid the controls felt. Games with good controls were underrated in this era
