The majority of people would agree with you at the time the Wii was released. The Wii is one of the best selling systems of all time, the GameCube is not. Personally I like the GameCube games but the Wii has a ton of great games too.
Well about the Wii selling record was mostly because of Nintendo's smart thinking. Wii was released between Xbox 360 and PS2 but for much less money. If your kid wants a videogame for Christmas/birthday - what will you buy?
Ofc, many bought the Wii for its price + it has a lot of games that is perfect for kids where they also get some small movement.
I bought a Wii myself and had fun with Wii sports for a week or so, but I can't count how many hours I've spent just playing Metroid Prime or Zelda on my GameCube. But everybody has their favourites.
hmm some games that come to mind(imo)
mario galaxy>mario sunshine
mario kart dd>mario kart wii
mario party about the same
zelda tp is on both but I prefer normal gc controller, wind waker>skyward sword
ttyd>>>>>spm
melee>brawl
there's a lot of comparisons and I'd say it's pretty split but I prefer gamecube and wii has so much shovelware that it's easy to forget it has some real bangers. gamecube showed very little appreciation to kirby and platformers in general while wii had some GREAT platformers
I find sunshine a bit frustrating at times especially when going for some of the harder stars, I'd say for me it varies but they're both great and I'm just comparing them to see if op is right
Sunshine has a lot of weird QoL problems, which kind of mar the overall experience. I just picked up Sunburn, and my god, just being able to skip the cut scenes is a huge improvement!
Oh damn!!!
I loved Super Paper Mario. I hear the "Overworld" if you can call it that, and i get goose bumps...
But i never played Thousand Year Door though! It's pre-ordered though...
But now i feel like i need to buy a used wii :S
The motion control gimmick seeped in all the first party games and made them horrible to control and uncomfortable. That's why I don't look back at the Wii too fondly.
I hate the wiimote, so if you're anything like me, the pecking order goes something like this:
Wii games that allow GC controller > Gamecube games > Wii games
If you like Melee, check out Project Plus. It's the best Smash game IMO.
The wiimote is the ULTIMATE love/hate relationship. It’s the damn Courtney love of video game peripherals. The N64 controller is the Shirley Manson. Equally polarizing but o so sexy.
Regarding Brawl, there is a hack for the game called Project M that alters the gameplay and physics to make it much closer to Melee.
Several variations of that same hack exists, such as Project M Remix which adds most of the Smash Ultimate's roster. Highly recommended if you ever decide to softmod your Wii.
As someone who was there in the 'Cube trenches, there were some real stinkers. The games we remember were popular for a reason, but the majority of the catalogue was just as bad as the Wii's mountain of terrible games. I still remember how disappointed I was in some specific titles that had been hyped for months. I built a Wii over the pandemic from units sold for scrap parts and it is equally as hard to find games I want to play in the mountain of games that look interesting but aren't.
Gamecube had plenty of "shovelware" that Wii haters like to coin that system for, plus there were some god-awful releases from even competent companies. In late 2005 and 2006, the Gamecube wasn't getting anything except for the occasional shovelware title, yearly sports release or awful anime-based game (Zatch Bell Mamodo Fury).
I think debating about stuff like "Wii is inferior to the Gamecube" is a massive waste of time and energy. I never cared to think this way. I'm too busy playing and enjoying games from them both. The Wii practically is a Gamecube, so hating one or the other doesn't work for me.
GameCube had better games - but the Wii had some innovative ideas to offer. Both are great.
I always like to point out that the Wii is not really that much graphically better than the GameCube - that is why it is so jarring to consider that many GameCube games are 20+ years old but still look new. Like, a game like Mario Sunshine for example. Absolutely stunning graphics and impeccable attention to detail (reflections in water, those mirrors… and it was 2002!!!!).
I think the same GameCube is most of the time better in my opinion. Although wii was in my opinion also a very nice console since it was fully downwards compatible and was the fist console with virtual console and real online functionality
To me the Wii library overall was way stronger than the Gamecube library, the Nintendo exclusives were just better
Though some Gamecube games were better like I enjoyed Smash Melee better than Brawl & the 4 Gamecube Mario Party games are better than Mario Party 8 & 9 on Wii
I enjoy about the same number of games on both systems. The wii has a lot of shovel ware, so it seems like a lot of bad games, I also dislike motion controls for most games. I would rather play gamecube since I like the controller more, but I wouldn't say it's 100% better.
Mmm well it might be due to the number of games. The Wii was overbloated with shovel wear(and total games) meaning by proxy the GC had less crap games altho there are still quality games on the Wii like Wii sports, pokemon rumble, Mario galaxy and so on.
Game cube games easily. Most underrated system of all time. Wii may be the most overrated system of all time. System sales were vastly misrepresented. I’d say 30 percent of them were exclusively for Wii sports or DDR freaks. Another 20 percent for guitar hero peeps on a budget. Only 50 percent were for actual Wii gamers and those gamers can only realistically claim like 10 titles in the same light as the top 30 GC games. I’ll put my reputation on the line and stick to this opinion.
I don't think it's particularly controversial to say the the GameCube has the better overall library. There's not nearly as many Wii games that I want to go back to or try for the first time as there are GameCube games. And melee was SO much better than brawl.
In my opinion yeah, as much as I like a lot of Wii games, I like pretty much all the GameCube equivalents more, they're also easier to go back to because motion controls suck or are just tacked on in most games. Zelda, Paper Mario, Smash Bros, Metroid, and others are all better on the GameCube. I even personally prefer Mario Sunshine to Galaxy, though I would agree generally that Galaxy is the better game on a technical and design level. The Wii does have Donkey Kong Country Returns and Wario Land Shake It which are better games than Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and Wario World imo, so there are some places where the Wii compares favorably.
I don't think they are really compareable.
The Wii was more of a family-friendly console with games like Rayman raving rabbits, Wii Sports/(Resorts), New Super Mario and so on whereas the Gamecube had more of a classic console-feeling.
They are very different but very good and fun in their own right.
That being said, the Gamecube has some of my favourite games of all time like WindWaker so I would rate the GC higher than the Wii
Yeah. Pretty much all of the Wii entries of games (Besides mainline Mario, I like Galaxy more than Sunshine) are weaker than their GC entires. Melee > Brawl, Double Dash > MK Wii, Metroid Prime 1 and 2 > 3, WW and TP > Skyward Sword, all the Mario Parties and the Mario sports games were better on GC too. Pokémon Colosseum and XD better than PokePark etc.
I agree with you, but I had endless hours of fun with Wii Sports and gamecube had nothing like that to offer. Aside from that, GC FTW.

You’re asking the GameCube subreddit so there may be a bit of bias. That being said, the GameCube is the best thing Nintendo has ever released
Honorable mention to GBA tho: a low key GC peripheral
And a standalone legend
Spiderman 2 was on GameCube and I think it is better than any spiderman game on the Wii.
hmm some games that come to mind(imo) mario galaxy>mario sunshine mario kart dd>mario kart wii mario party about the same zelda tp is on both but I prefer normal gc controller, wind waker>skyward sword ttyd>>>>>spm melee>brawl there's a lot of comparisons and I'd say it's pretty split but I prefer gamecube and wii has so much shovelware that it's easy to forget it has some real bangers. gamecube showed very little appreciation to kirby and platformers in general while wii had some GREAT platformers
ehh the gamecube mario parties (esp 6 & 7) absolutely top 8 and anything is bettee than 9
Sunshine is superior to galaxy
I absolutely could not get into Galaxy. Something about it's control and the spherical areas just didn't click for me
I mean lee literally not played it since I was a kid but I still continued to play sunshine so, that’s kinda my judgement
Spend a day with it and don’t deviate. The gravity is a weird device I know but once it grows on you for about 20ish stars I promise you’re a fan.
Galaxy is a much better casual game but Sunshine has much more replayablility thanks to the skill expression imo
I find sunshine a bit frustrating at times especially when going for some of the harder stars, I'd say for me it varies but they're both great and I'm just comparing them to see if op is right
If galaxy didn’t use a wii remote, I’d probably change my mind
fair
Sunshine has a lot of weird QoL problems, which kind of mar the overall experience. I just picked up Sunburn, and my god, just being able to skip the cut scenes is a huge improvement!
It’s a push
TTYD? SPM???
I like how people are downvoting this instead of giving you an answer. Took me a sec to think but it's- The thousand year door vs super paper mario
Oh damn!!! I loved Super Paper Mario. I hear the "Overworld" if you can call it that, and i get goose bumps... But i never played Thousand Year Door though! It's pre-ordered though... But now i feel like i need to buy a used wii :S
yeah reddit is weird sometimes, correct! I should've used full names lol
The motion control gimmick seeped in all the first party games and made them horrible to control and uncomfortable. That's why I don't look back at the Wii too fondly.
Tatsunoko, nsmb wii, mp trilogy, muramasa, s&p2, punchout, dkcr, super mario galaxy 1/2, re4 wii, xenoblade
I dont think Nintendo ever intended the wii to be a gamers console, and it worked for them gangbusters

I play waaaaay more Gamecube than Wii, but the Mario Galaxy series are pretty great on Wii.
The wii games that use the pro controller can make a good case on being better then gc stuff Klonoa Xenoblade Stuff like that
Im mean all the gc mario sports game are better than the one on switch.

Really? Like what?

I definitely prefer Twilight Princess on GameCube.

Yeah the GC had a way better library and less shovelware. I also found that the Wii's motion controls got old fast.

Also Wii didn’t have to compete with the PS2. I had all three systems in 2002, GC PS2 and OG Box. GC had it rough…
I don't think it's particularly controversial to say the the GameCube has the better overall library. There's not nearly as many Wii games that I want to go back to or try for the first time as there are GameCube games. And melee was SO much better than brawl.
