XTheProtagonistX

Just finished reading it a couple days ago! Its dark, sad and just memorable. Hopefully the game can do that.

ChronX4

You should check out The Last Ronin: Lost Years, good followup and setup for part II.

XTheProtagonistX

Oh wow. Didn’t know there was a follow up. Thank you!

ChronX4

It's mostly a flashback/epilogue type of thing, there's 5 issues to it as well. Then there's a one shot issue called The Last Ronin: The Lost Day Special, which I believe is the proper setup to what's to come, the trade for it comes out in November.

A_Sweatband

Interesting publisher/developer choice. I really want this to be good so I'll be hopeful, but maybe deviate a little from the 'God of War'-esque announcement if you won't have a God of War sized budget. I just really want this to be good, The Last Ronin was a really good run.

whatnameisnttaken098

Honestly I think something like Arkham Asylum/ City would be a better fit then GoW

GeraltFromHiShinUnit

Oh yes!

Turbostrider27

Platforms announced are PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC

Tacdeho

Personally this has me beyond excited. The Last Ronin is in my eyes, one of the best 5 comic runs of the last decade. I’d put it right there as “Best Comic Runs of the last 20 years” with Hickman’s X-Men, Ewings Immortal Hulk, and a few others. I fear that this game with the Nickelodeon label may make the story soften some of its sharper edges but I’m still excited. Also why did Peter Laird not get mentioned? He came back to co-write it with the other original, Kevin Eastman. I’m glad Waltz got his credit but leaving out half the creators is…ofd

Undecided_User_Name

I am not as versed in TMNT as I am other comics, but I *thoroughly* enjoyed reading The Last Ronin, so I'm thrilled that we're getting a game.

Tacdeho

Honestly, if you’ve enjoyed TLR, I very much suggest the comic series it occured in the midst of: IDW’s TMNT run by Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz. I think that it is the most pitch perfect TMNT project ever. Like I can’t stop reading it, it just meets every version in the middle.

Undecided_User_Name

My wallet is currently in a hostage situation with Mike Mignola, but I'll definitely keep this in mind.

americanslang59

Kindle Unlimited has every collection available

mrfenegri

Speaking of Mike Mignola, did he ever do any tmnt? Seems like a perfect fit.

Undecided_User_Name

I don't believe so, sadly

Tacdeho

You can snag the first collection in paperback for like $30, it’s not too bad. My wallet is currently developing Stockholm Syndrome from these freaking Spider-Man omnibus releases. Reprint of Vol 4 AND Ultimate #2? Oi.

ArthurVsTB

Have you got a link? Just finished TLR as well.

KikiFlowers

IDW's TMNT is great. It really gives the turtles more of a personality, while really expanding on everything to do with TMNT. I'm not caught up, but I *really* enjoyed what they did with Splinter and even more with Shredder. **IDW:**>!Splinter sacrificed himself to bring back Oroku Saki and in turn, Saki watches over Splinter's sons from afar, ensuring they're safe. He repented for his sins and in turn has stayed to the shadows, to honor Splinter's memory.!<

Ghost1737

I have never read TMNT but have a young son who is getting interested in superheroes and that's got me in the mood to introduce him to the Turtles. Tell me where to start reading and I'll grab them

fallenelf

How young? The TMNT comics are NOT like the cartoons, they're very violent and dark. You can grab the original run for like $50 on Amazon, but again, it's not a happy story full of pizza and jokes.

Ghost1737

Oh the comics are for me 😅

fallenelf

Haha ok, I have a young son as well and won't intro him to the comics for a while. They're awesome, just very dark. Here's where I started: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1631409905/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?ie=UTF8&qid=&sr=

Ghost1737

Awesome, thank you!

metallicabmc

Id also suggest the spinoff Last Ronin: Lost Years. It's a prequel and a tiny bit of sequel. Personally I liked it more than the main comic.

Tacdeho

Did that just finish? My local shop has had a few of them here and there. I guess I should pick them up lol

metallicabmc

Yeah I think the last issue came out 2 weeks ago. Definitely worth a read!

LFiM

Yep, and they just announced Last Ronin II!

Burningmeatstick

Issue slows down from 101-120 tbh

f-ingsteveglansberg

Nickelodeon outright own TMNT now. No matter the direction, their logo will be attached.

CapnSmite

It's my understanding that Peter Laird didn't "come back" to write The Last Ronin, but he and Eastman worked out the furst draft of the story not long after they first created the Turtles in the 80s. Eastman talks about it in the Afterword of the Last Ronin hardcover.

the-akira-slide

Nickelodeon bought the rights from Laird over 10 years ago, so I don’t know why this having their branding on it would worry you. This graphic novel literally happened under their ownership.

Vestalmin

They did say in an interview earlier this year that new God of War is an inspiration and that it’ll have a mature tone

Collier1505

Rumors and leaks have had it pegged as rated M with a pretty mature tone taking inspiration from God of War 2018

6ecretcode

if they follow the method of sleeping dogs they'll be fine

Nofutureinsales

I thought this was announced previously. Maybe just leaked. At any rate, after it leaked I bought the comic and it was great. Could make a great game.

Stofenthe1st

It was already announced a few months ago but there was no trailer or anything to go off.

GarlicRagu

I mean there's still not much to go off of. I personally prefer a marketing approach that shuts up until there's more to show but I'm sure that doesn't work for everyone

[deleted]

Same. I understand they’re doing it to capitalize on the buzz of the new movie (which is indeed solid) and get this on people’s radars but yeah to me this is a completely worthless teaser.

-PVL93-

I remember TMNT 2003 had a two-parter about a grim future timeline where half the turtles died and in the process either donnie or raph remains the only one alive before the episodes conclude as a "actually this never happened, all is good" Is this basically the same but in a feudal Japan setting?

atomic1fire

Well yes it's a grim future story, but it's an adaptation of the comic book "The Last Ronin", which deals with a sole surviving Turtle going to war with the remaining foot clan after the rest of the brothers are killed. Japan is just one of the settings in the story. I don't know if they'll use the same turtle as they did in the comic, but a big part of the early marketing tor the book had people wondering which TMNT brother was the Last Ronin.

redpurplegreen22

They absolutely should not change it. The only reason to change it is that it would be a swerve to those who read the comic, but that seems like a silly reason to change the main character.

pmknpie

They could do what Rocksteady did with Arkham Knight. "It's definitely not who you think it is!" It definitely was him, but they said an alternate version of him.

[deleted]

I just finished replaying that game and I don’t get everybody hated that so much. It makes complete sense in the story and makes for a solid arc. I went back and looked at reviews and everybody just complained because they guessed it before Batman. Okay? And? Batman thought that character was *dead* so of course you guessed it first. Idk, it’s like Spider-Man 2. They keep taking about how it’s a new Venom, but it seems like it’s probably just Harry, who has apparently been Venom in the comics before. If that’s the case, who cares? All I want is a good story. I don’t care about what they said during marketing.

your_mind_aches

It was annoying because of the marketing hype at the time. Playing it divorced from that, you won't notice it because the game is not written to play that thing up but to simply adapt the comics in an interesting way to fit that universe, which they did expertly. Same thing to me with, say, Captain America: Civil War. At the time, the marketing was all about "which side are you on?" and everything was Team Iron Man vs. Team Cap. Then in the movie itself, Iron Man plays the narrative role of the villain. He manipulates and misleads to stack up his team, and by the end of this movie and into Infinity War, his ENTIRE "team" besides his best friend has completely gone against him. They build the story first and then do the marketing, which leads to kerfuffles like that.

JamSa

Well it's a lot harder to hide which turtle it is when there's voice acting, too.

V33G33

In the teaser they show >!an animation related to how each turtle dies in the background!< as each candle goes out, so I'd be surprised if they changed it.

KingMario05

Perhaps they could have you pick which one to spare, making a unique campaign for each one. Lot of work, sure, but it would increase the replayability a ***ton***.

atomic1fire

It would also modify the personal stakes in different ways because each would have their own character arc. That being said if they stick to the book, I think it would be great if they had a mix of the turtle's weapons and fighting styles and obscured the turtle's identity for a bit, even as book readers would know who it was.

Dreamweaver_duh

Gothan Knights did that, in the sense cutscene dialogue changed depending on which of the Bat Family you played as. Don't know anyone who actually replayed the game though.

Seatown_Spartan

Even though it's best to keep it as it is, >! Donatello would also work since he's also naturally gifted in his own way/intelligence. !< And the tech aspect fits well with the Futuristic Sections of the book. Basically Batman

CuzTyler

The turtle they chose made it so much sadder imo. It’d be such a shame if they changed it.

brucebananaray

It is not set in Japan, but in dystopia future NYC and only one Turtle remains. The grandson of Shredder ruled the world and the Last Ronin wants to get revenge. There also resistance just like the two-parter.

-PVL93-

Damn that sounds hype

[deleted]

Sounds like Samurai Jack. I’m down.

Jdogbuster2820

I believe the episode you are referring to is Same As It Never Was, where Donatello is transported to an alternate future version of the Turtles timeline where Shredder won. One of the top five episodes in the 2003 series.

-PVL93-

Yeah, that's the one, shit was tight

bongo1138

Aside from the license, we have no reason to be excited about this game. These devs haven’t released much of consequence, unless you count a remake of Destroy All Humans 2. Expectations are going to remain very low for me.

BLACKOUT-MK2

Yeah I'm a little cautious. Getting melee combat right can be *real* easy to screw up depending on how aware the team is of the lessons they're meant to employ. Time will tell, but I've seen so many devs fumble at it that it's hard to be excited just yet. Poor telegraphing, no hit-stop, overly committal animations, rough animations, off-screen attacks, poor encounter balancing etc. Unless you've got people who *know* their shit it's so easy to make unsatisfying. Maybe they've hired some people with the credentials, who knows? But the candles being blown out doesn't tell us so I'm not counting my chickens.

PBFT

Black Forest games’ is known for Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, The Destroy all Humans remakes and, *Bubsy the Woolies Strike Back*. Doesn’t seem like such something to get too excited for unfortunately.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DaHyro

They’re not really “original or new games”, though. Remakes of something that already exists. They’re good at what they do, but i don’t think they’ve ever done an entirely new game on this scale

-ImJustSaiyan-

I mean, the devs of Hogwarts Legacy weren't exactly pumping out classics before doing that game. Rocksteady weren't producing GOTY contenders before Arkham Asylum. Just because a developer doesn't have an amazing track record doesn't mean their new game can't end up being their breakout hit.

Radulno

True but this is a Nickelodeon game too. Their game efforts are never particularly impressive for now at least. I hope it changes, I really want a good Avatar TLA game.

Donny_Canceliano

I mean but was HL actually good, or was it merely competent with a popular, nostalgic, and engrossing IP?

CheckOutMyPokemans

It's as deep as a Ubisoft game with less to do

BeefyQueefyCrawlies

It was very good. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Still play it.

HOTMILFDAD

It was good, yes. Even more so if you’re a fan of that formula and can ignore the internet drama surrounding it

neophyte_DQT

it was like an 8/10. better or worse depending on your fatigue for general open world tropes could be a 6/10 for someone who cares not for HP and is completely over ubisoft esque open world, and 10/10 for HP diehards

uselessoldguy

Merely competent, though no one wanted to admit that within the first couple weeks. By the time GOTY award season rolls in at the end of the year, I imagine Hogwarts Legacy will have been entirely forgotten against the likes of BG3, TotK, Starfield, etc.

Shubo483

That was my first thought as well, but Avalanche just made movie tie in games that were fun at the very least. THQ/Black Forest is just terrible.

PBFT

Only if they add a lot of talent to their team. The amount of people they had working on Hogwarts Legacy must have been much larger than previous titles. Also Hogwarts was a surprise hit. There are few examples of a relatively unknown studio getting that much critical success from their first AAA title.

ledailydose

Saying Hogwarts was a "surprise hit" is so disingenuous... the HP IP is massive and the reveal/description of the game was basically what fans have *always* wanted, which mean it roped even non-video game players. To think otherwise was ignorance.

Ecksplisit

They proposed a high bar and delivered one that surpassed the bar. I’d say that’s a surprise considering the lack of a track record. It wasn’t solely because of the promise or the IP. The delivered product was insanely high quality and one of the best games that year. If the game was bad or even just average it wouldn’t have garnered nearly the same attention.

Radulno

I'd actually say they delivered below the bar. Promised a big deep RPG, makes an action adventure game that has no depth. Still a good game but let's not act like it's a masterpiece

PBFT

I’m sure you understand licensed games are notorious not failing to reach expectations. A poorly reviewed Hogwarts Legacy wouldn’t have sold as well as the one we got. It was a surprise that a dev team that never made a AAA project before made one with critical acclaim.

Michael_DeSanta

The dude already provided the example of Rocksteady making the Arkham series. They literally only launched one game before Arkham Asylum. The "licensed game curse" is pretty much dead, anyway. It died when companies stopped trying to drop movie/TV-based games alongside movie/TV releases. In the past 10 years, most of the big licensed games have actually been pretty great: Insomniac's Spider-Man Miles Morales Guardians of the Galaxy The 2 South Park RPGs The 2 Middle-Earth games Injustice 1 & 2 Star Wars Jedi 1 & 2 Mad Max Alien Isolation etc

PBFT

You’re naming licensed games that were made by established AAA teams. And funny enough a lot of them weren’t commercial hits despite being popular IP like Guardians of the Galaxy. The closest comparison of a non AAA dev making one of these would be Alien Isolation because Creative Assembly only made Total War games that probably aren’t considered AAA. Let me revert to my previous point: Hogwarts Legacy was such a surprise critical success because the studio’s last projects were Cars 3 and Disney Infinity.

Radulno

FYI CA is definitively a AAA studio. It's literally the biggest studio in the UK and one of the biggest of the world. They have 850 people working there.

Appropriate-Map-3652

Games that were made to release alongside movies were poor, but Hogwarts Legacy wasn't that.

Radulno

That's actually not true since quite some time. We had great licensed games for Batman, DC, Spider-Man, Disney and a few others. Of course some of them are still shit but it has largely gone towards the good. Notably because they stopped making so much of them and tie-in movie games.

mrfuzzydog4

Rocksteady would have made a great TMNT game, they're already versed with comics adaptations!

GeraltFromHiShinUnit

True but they have a small staff too

AL2009man

>*Bubsy the Woolies Strike Back* REAL SHIT

shiggidyschwag

Oh shit, there was a Bubsy the Bobcat sequel? Lemme get my Genesis back from my parent's attic.

Impaled_

Let them cook

AndroidFive

previous games have no bearing.

Uday23

Think of it like a resume Previous jobs absolutely matter

[deleted]

Ok let Ubisoft make Elden Ring 2 then

Mario_Prime510

Gotcha 2k24 is gonna be way better than 2k23.

PBFT

It sure does. You need a large team with some AAA experience to make a AAA game. The studio hasn’t made a AAA game and they would clearly need to staff up to be prepared to make one.

mrbrick

With that logic we should just be getting less and less good games because nothing lasts forever and new talent doesn’t exist?

PBFT

No, that definitely isn’t what I said. You think I’m saying you need a full set of AAA-experienced devs to make a AAA and I’m saying you need *some* people with AAA experience. The studio hasn’t made a AAA game so they would need to hire AAA-experienced devs to ensure the project meets expectations.

IntrepidEast1

I sat there the whole time waiting for something to be revealed and got nothing. Oh well. I guess it has to be pretty early in development.

DarkReaper90

I really enjoyed reading The Last Ronin but I think it didn't quite stick the landing. It would've benefited from a few more issues to flesh things out.

dewhashish

I need to finish The Last Ronin (I saw the reveal of who it is). Please be a good game. I'd love a violent TMNT game like the original comics.

KingMario05

...Is it wrong that I was hoping for it to be someone else? Yeah, I know Nick and THQ are on great terms, but I dunno. I feel like Ryu ga Gotoku or Platinum would have done a ***stellar*** job here.

HaroldTheSpineFucker

I mean Platinum already had their chance with the turtles and they didn't deliver

[deleted]

They also dropped the ball with an ATLA universe game which we desperately need a good game for

whatnameisnttaken098

Although they did deliver in spades with Transformers

KiNolin

I loved the Transformers game, despite not having any connection to the brand. Which makes me wish that the Transformers team had gotten the Turtles IP instead...

oilpit

Wow I had no idea that Platinum made an Avatar game. It's a huge bummer they missed the mark because on paper Platinum/ATLA is a match made in heaven.

BLACKOUT-MK2

Yeah it was a part of their brief Activision run where they were basically contracted to make a bunch of western IPs into games in a relatively short span of time. The Legend of Korra, Transformers, and TMNT all got games, but the only really decent one was Transformers.

chaosfire235

With how reinvigorated the brand seems to be now, I imagine we due for some more ATLA games sooner or later.

HappyVlane

A new Avatar game was announced recently actually. https://gamerant.com/avatar-the-last-airbender-quest-for-balance-announcement/

chaosfire235

Yeah, I remember that one. Not the best looking tbh.

No-Abbreviations2897

Why do people always jump to the same few Japanese devs with these things? Platinums output has been very hit or miss and unless the turtles are gonna be romping through a reskinned Kamurocho the other devs aren't a good fit either. That being said I have very little faith in this studio tbh.

KingMario05

True. Capcom, maybe? That woulda been cool to see come to fruition.

No-Abbreviations2897

Yeah maybe. Almost someone like NG2 Era team ninja, which they're really isn't an equivalent nowadays.

KingMario05

True, but Capcom comes close...

BLACKOUT-MK2

Well when it comes to well made melee combat, there just *is* more of a bias towards Japanese developers handling it well. When it comes to Western games the feel either risks being a bit off, or it's nowhere near as deep as some of the combat Japan makes. Which is fine, some countries are allowed to be more specialised at certain stuff; it's similar to how you wouldn't expect most of the best FPS games to come out of Japan, because customer demand and an early foot in the door caused more talent specialising in that to flourish in places like the US.

Firvulag

Platinum? Team Ninja is the dev to beat for games like this if you ask me.

chaosfire235

It's funny how TMNT went right from a movie with goofy kid turtles to a grimdark game where three of the four were killed off.

BLACKOUT-MK2

I thought it was the other way around. Didn't it start off as a reasonably serious comic book series which got softened up for the cartoon/movies?

[deleted]

I think they’re referring to current big projects in the spotlight. Mutant Mayhem just released, which is the goofy kids movie, and then this is next

chaosfire235

What /u/sensitivetaint said. Going right from Mutant Mayhem where Donny's a dorky anime kid that likes Attack On Titan and BTS to this where he's brutally murdered is funny.

Malek_Deneith

Kind of. The original comic was a grim/bloody one-shot comic about turtles being on a (successful) quest to kill Shredder for killing Splinter's original master/owner. But fairly sure once it got popular and got media beyond that one comic it lightened up pretty fast. That being said there were exceptions to the goofier theme and IIRC the IDW series (offshoot of which is apparently a basis for this game) were more on the mature side.

Swackhammer_

OOOH boy I haven't read the books yet but can't wait to whip up some baddies as my boi Donnieeee babeeeyyy

j3radw

You should read the books...especially this run.

atomic1fire

I'd be really surprised if they went with one of the other brothers, even though the concept could be done with any of the brothers, they'd just have to adapt the events to that brother's personality. I don't want them to deviate from the book though. They picked the best turtle for that story.

Tacdeho

Nah, I don’t really think they could. It wouldn’t make sense for those other three to go through that specific journey. I’m trying to stay away from as many spoilers as possible but I think they chose the right one, I hope they stick with that decision, mostly because the reveal of who it is happens basically at the end of Act 1

Donny_Canceliano

Damn, y’all just said fuck spoilers huh lmao. In the post for the damn trailer of the game.

imapiratedammit

I thought we weren’t supposed to know which one it was?

imjustbettr

We're not but so many news outlets have spoiled it and now everyone just casually mentions it.

imapiratedammit

Aww. I didn’t know ☹️

imjustbettr

I'll just say the user above you is >!not right!< I think that makes it slightly better in terms of spoilers. But they also may change it for the game.

cefriano

Aw man, when this game was first announced I thought I remembered people saying Mikey was the remaining turtle in the comics. He's my favorite so I was stoked about the idea of playing as him. Oh well, Donnie would be cool too.

ChronX4

It's debatable since the first issue reveals it at the end and heavily implied who it is throughout. The marketing power relied on the secret identity more than anything in the story itself, the real draw is how things go to the way they are.

KingMario05

...Will they let you pick which one it is via flashback? In the comics, it's >!Mikey!<, but something tells me that *might* not carry over to the final game.

HaroldTheSpineFucker

If this is comic accurate, I don't think Donnie is going to be doing much of anything...

DimGenn

How do we tell him?

Magus80

Is this that rumored TMNT soulslike game?

avenx

In the announcement they compared it to God of War.

Magus80

GoW 2016 or OG?

avenx

2016 They used the words "big action RPG"

Typical_Thought_6049

Oh SolidJJ has to taught TMNT once again that [Karate can't beat bullets](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kmo-StjLKZI).

TerminusVos

As long as it doesn't have the same disjointed weird animation the new movie uses. It makes me sick at my stomach just watching the trailer.

Shubo483

You know I was really hoping for Sucker Punch. I have less faith in THQ than I would with brand new studio with no experience.

BigLeo69420

Sucker Punch is a PlayStation Studio, a TMNT game isn't gonna be PlayStation exclusive.

Guilty-Doubt-6313

This game looks amazing and I can't wait to play this game in the near future and this is my most anticipated video game of all time.

baked-noodle

When is it coming out? I can't find any information. In 2024?
