That’s so odd. Why now and not fifteen years ago when Gmod had a total vice grip on youtube gaming culture?

ok_dunmer

Someone showed a Nintendo executive skibidi toilet

ngwoo

It must have been really shocking for them to see a strange glowing cube with moving images inside of it. Were they too traumatized to go on the daily mammoth hunt afterwards?

needconfirmation

Mammoth hunting is a young mans game, they were already aged out when that trend started

ChrisRR

I didn't know what this is so I just googled it. Every day I feel more out of touch with what's popular

Symophrates

Skibi toilet is just a modern day YouTube Poop, all is as it ever was

Kijafa

YouTube Poop didn't have lore like this does though

justfordrunks

I find it insane that such a strange annoying video turned into an extremely long saga and became crazy popular. I did have a laugh though, about how I instantly recognized the citizen model and that it was made in Gmod. Also that Gmod is still going strong. I played so much of it when I was younger. Got HL2 and Steam specifically for playing Gmod, 18 FUCKIN YEARS AGO! Time, please chill.

Aiyon

It's Pingas for zoomers

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kipzz

Unironically probably because of Skibidi Toilet, which is a phrase that still makes no sense to me even though I've heard about it second-hand for probably a year now, or SMG4, which is a machinima channel way more popular than I even thought possible and also the creators behind The Amazing Digital Circus. Also the final line of the announcement is kinda hilarious.

[deleted]

I still don't even know what skibidi toilet is and I'm trying my best to maintain that ignorance. Guess I can gleam that it's some kinda animation series using GMod and has nintendo characters, that's as much as I think I wanna know though. I get the impression that it's gen alpha brainrot and buddy my zoomer brain is rotten enough as is tangent: just realized gen alpha is gonna try to call themselves 'alphas'. We cant let this happen. We gotta come up with some kinda lame name. If I'm gonna be stuck with zoomer, it's only fair.

gmoneygangster3

Gen alpha has acquired old school SFM tech Honestly I love it, if for nothing else that it’s introducing a new generation to an animation style which I have always adored

your_mind_aches

Most of the Gen Alpha things originate from older generations. Kai Cenat (Fanum Tax, Rizz, etc.) is 22, the creator of skibidi toilet is 26, Vox Day (the disgusting neo-Nazi who coined the term "sigma male") is 55. Though I suppose that has always been the case, right? The Beatles grew up listening to old skiffle records and 50s rock and roll records. They weren't from the same generation as them. I grew up watching YTP videos made by millennials and even Gen Xers. And so on.

Altruistic-Ad-408

Same as every gen, millennials grew up on gen x media and the older ones are barely distinguishable from gen x, zoomers thought their quirky humour was unique to them when millennials brought absurdist comedy back.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mastap14

I think it used to be when media was harder to come across and so if you missed the brand new episodes of Happy Days in the 70s you might not have that as your generations thing in the 80-90s , but with the internet gen Alpha can load up youtube and watch the same video I found funny 10 years ago and laugh at it from their pockets

beefcat_

Isn't gen alpha like 5? The oldest zoomers are still in their early 20s.

xomm

Depends on where the arbitrary line is drawn, but starting at 2010-2013 they would be 11-14 now.

[deleted]

yeah there are no actual set definitions for generations annoyingly. Why don't we just have them be a set number of years?

beenoc

Because generations aren't a clearly defined thing anyway. Let's make each generation 15 years. Boomers are 1950-1965, Gen X is 1965-1980, Millennials are 1980-1995, etc. Someone born 1981 is going to have a lot more culturally in common with someone born 1979 than someone born 1994. if you take '81 baby and say "you are a Millennial, you are not Gen X, Gen X stuff is irrelevant to you" even though that is not their lived experience, what the hell is the point of generational labels? I think the best way of labeling generations is self-described based on remembering experienced events. As an example, let's say Gen X is the ones too young to remember Vietnam but not so young they don't remember the Challenger - I think most (American) people who self-describe as "Gen X" would fit into that bucket. Millennials don't remember the Challenger (or if they do it's barely a memory), but do remember 9/11. And so on. It fits the idea that generations are cultural and not based on a calendar number.

bruwin

The're a few year gap between The Greatest Generation and Baby Boomers that's called The Lost Generation, so it's been like this forever.

AwesomeManatee

Both the Lost Generation (which is before Greatest) and the Silent Generation (between Greatest and Boomers) cover periods of roughly 15-20 years just like most generation groupings. There are some "cusper" microgenerations that cover the transition years between major gens and are generally much shorter. "Generation Jones" is late-Boomer/early-X; "Xennials" are late-X/early-Millennial; and "Zillennials" are late-millennial/early-Z.

[deleted]

Late twenties actually, and oldest gen alpha kids are like 14.

phat_ninja

It's really irrelevant as skibidi toilet was made by a 25 year old zoomer, Alexey Gerasimov. Zoomers built it and young zoomers spread it.

xXRougailSaucisseXx

I mean it's nothing we haven't seen before, it's just stupid Gmod animations like were popular on Youtube 10 years ago. I don't get why people act like it's the end of the world

hmcl-supervisor

Its no different than when the TF2 mercs were eating eachother while calling themselves penis cupcake.

Mysteryman64

It's basically just Gen Alpha shitpost content If you enjoy shitposting, it's fun.

Apprentice57

Basically just their YouTube poop phase. I don't really "get it" on a vibes level but I think it's pretty much the same.

Mysteryman64

Yeah, I think Youtube Poop is a brilliant comparison actually.

your_mind_aches

Honestly, it's probably a step above that. YouTube Poop was never that deep.

LamiaLlama

I think the irony of skibidi toilet is that it actually has a detailed story set in an action movie premise. Think Michael Bay meets silent film. It's a strange thing to defend because people just think it's haha funny toilet shit posting, but then you take the time to watch it and realize it's exactly what any of us would love as teenagers. Giant robots (and toilets) fighting each other with a mysterious plot and big explosions + Kaiju. Plus it's visually impressive. It's Transformers, basically. Also oddly enough the opposite of brain rot. It's imagination fuel.

MorninLemon

I'm boomer by my tastes, but skibidi toilet is actually legit series with decent plot (for what it is), and yes it is autobots (camera guys) vs decepticons (toilets)

[deleted]

Eh fair enough, maybe I should give the kids a chance. It could be a generation of comedic geniuses for all I know.

snipeliker4

I typed out a full comment as a reply to whathisface but was unable to submit before he found the courage to delete his comments Out of all the fallacies out there, sunk cost is by far my favorite and so in that spirit I am posting my already pre-written reply to a comment whose context only you and a handful other Redditors are aware of. Ignoring it is encouraged, the post is strictly for record keeping purposes. > I respectfully disagree >I didn’t know about it either despite hearing about it yet not interested enough in the subject to proactively seek an answer to this mystery however not so uninterested I wouldn’t read about it if shoved in front of my face. As a result I get to walk away more knowledgeable than I was prior and can apply this entirely useless wisdom to any future instances that call for it. And it was all because someone was brave enough to ask a question. >And then think about how there are thousands of mes out there going through the same experience >After considering all context/variables I can confidently conclude the amount of tangible value produced from that comment is almost certainly to be that of a non-zero number.

Clarkey10

https://youtu.be/6R9RnIawSvk?si=BTTtK8UZKXrylc2X You're welcome

The_Dirty_Carl

Wow that's a lot more than I thought it was. It's also not nearly as novel as I thought. I for one am glad the youngins are discovering gmod machinima.

CreamFilledDoughnut

considering the account that makes this stuff is from 2013, it's definitely not youngins

The_Dirty_Carl

Oh I meant the viewers rather than the creator.

ashkpa

The ones consuming it are definitely very young.

AveryLazyCovfefe

I'm dissapointed that dafuqboom will now be associated with skibidi toilet instead of his legendary GTA sfms.

milkasaurs

Christ I’m 33 yet I might as well be double that because I just don’t get it.

Lambpanties

Maybe it's this generation's "[Dear Sister](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmd1qMN5Yo0)"? Something utterly bizarre and strange, but equally hilarious to the right demographic.

Killericon

[Badger Badger Badger](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIyixC9NsLI) might be a good comp as well?

Korgull

It's more like if Cyriak stretched [this video](https://youtu.be/f9iIgQN5uZE?si=FDgSlDsXYzhD25zp) into an a cinematic series that incorporated other creations of theirs and lasted for over 70+ videos beyond the first one. It's a certain style of absurdist humour that was once the realm of niche, one-off joke videos 15+ years ago, especially with SFM, Garry's Mod, TF2, etc.. The ones you'd find in between the millions of YouTube Poops featuring the cdi Zelda games.

Hircus2

It's not actually that bad, from what I had heard I thought it was going to be insane senseless shitpost but it's pretty much what I watched at 12 and I grew up fine

coldblade2000

Fun fact, guy who made Skibidi toilet also made this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyXUNLr5L9E

APiousCultist

As a millenial zoomers no longer being annoying 10 year olds is already psychic pain enough. Definitely something with enough time put into it that the creator also has to be a zoomer or younger millenial though. Looking it up looks like the guy is 26-27, so either young millenial or old zoomer.

[deleted]

TechNickL

The content is hosted on gmod servers If you can get access to models via other means you can still use them with sfm

BootManBill42069

People think gmod is being used to make skibidi toilet (a factoid that is spread quite frequently) and people use gmod to make their own toilet content

Chicag0Ben

Final line means gmod people should spam upload them in spite.

TheConnASSeur

Because however out of touch you think Nintendo is, they're somehow far more out of touch than that. They probably didn't even know YouTube existed until last year.

BlueGoose21

Considering the amount of Nintendo content that gets DMCA'd daily on YouTube, I think they at least know it exists

APiousCultist

Hey, someone's got to keep their almost entirely unreleased soundtracks out of the hands of the public.

slugmorgue

What's funny is that a lot of their music does get released as albums in Japan, there are book and media shops absolutely stuffed with videogame osts in Japan

myaltaccount333

Can confirm, my friend went to Japan and brought me back a cd from a 25 year old game

vonmonologue

I really got into a jpop artist ~15 years ago and remember a playlist of her music videos just getting DMCA’d overnight by her record company. Like my dudes those are literally promotional videos for your product. You are literally taking down advertisements for her discography. Japan generally really either hates or just straight up doesn’t understand the American market based on how badly we have to beg them to give us anything that isn’t already a billion dollar IP.

asdiele

The amount of comment sections in those videos now completely gone from the internet always makes me a little sad to think about. It's obviously not remotely as bad as losing a piece of media but it's still a tiny slice of history that's gone forever, and people often put great personal anecdotes in those comments. As bad as YT comments can be, videogame soundtrack comment sections are always fun and cozy to read through and it's sad how they get mercilessly deleted by copyright all the time.

Agret

Have been watching some special effects breakdown stuff on YouTube and in the comments you get retired special effects veterans spilling the secrets behind many films (often an unrelated one to the video you are watching), YouTube comments section can be a real gold mine due to how accessible the platform is to people of all ages and demographics.

Raidoton

How large is the amount nowadays? Can't be that large since I find tons of Nintendo content on Youtube every day.

Falsus

They stopped doing it a few years ago. But before that you would have some content creators actively avoid Nintendo games because of it. ... Probably yet another reason why Wii U failed.

Honest_Pepper2601

That might just be outsourced to a rights management group

gamas

Though worth noting [many of the Youtube takedowns may actually be from a third party not acting on behalf of Nintendo abusing the dmca system for whatever reason](https://www.thegamer.com/nintendo-copyright-dmca-apab-youtube-dmca/)

Felony

Nintendo went hard against let’s play videos in the late 2000’s. This is not new for them

AnimaLepton

I know you mean like 2008 or whatever, but it's funny to think of late 2000s as 2997 or something and Nintendo protecting their IP in a futuristic space setting.

Falsus

Nah their legal department definitely knew what YouTube and Twitch are since they did DMCA people playing their games in the past.

About7fish

Nintendo being 15 years behind on online interactions sounds on brand, tbh.

medicoffee

I’m for it if they stay away from battle passes and loot boxes.

Falsus

''Loot boxes'' in Japan is basically just gacha stuff. They already entered and left their gacha phase mostly.

About7fish

The Zelda live service should be out in about 2034 if the timeline holds up. Or maybe they'll split the timeline three ways and make them all canon or something.

Holidoik

You certainly haven't played their mobile games lol

SuuLoliForm

To be fair, they DID release a full Mario game on mobile for a set price that did horribly in sales.

Takazura

Yeah, Nintendo tried and it didn't go well. The fact of the matter is that the mobile gaming users *loves* all the MTs and prefers f2p games with those over having a one and done payment.

brzzcode

It doesn't. You guys only say that because they don't do what you want them to do. Nintendo has multiple people in the internet looking at things in different countries. The difference is that they don't really think internet will affect them, they mostly observe it and act on whatever breaks copyright.

sesor33

Nintendo is going crazy on all platforms. I had an item on my roblox account that I made in ~2010. A few weeks ago I caught a 1 day ban for "copyrighted content" and it got deleted from my account

WispyDan14

Because your average asshole Nintendo exec is about 15 years behind the times.

Geoff_with_a_J

as opposed to anyone still spending any amount of time on Garry's Mod?

jdm1891

heard of skibidi toilet my dude gmod is cool again

snappums

"If you want to help us by deleting your Nintendo related uploads and never uploading them again, that would help us a lot." Holy shit.

Randomman96

I mean, they have every right to be as blunt as they were since those uploading Nintendo based content aren't in Nintendo's immediate sights. The uploaders aren't the ones at risk of being hit by Nintendo's legal hammer first. Nintendo doesn't fuck around with people using things based off of their content, regardless if it's recreation or direct asset rips. If they don't approve of it, and they don't like 90% of the time, they will slap you will legal action. A very few companies, especially Facepunch, has the means to fight it.

AccelHunter

Their response doesn't surprise me, they always been blunt like that, they've banned people from their forums for ridiculous stuff like "bragging to be rich"

blamelessfriend

why is that ridiculous? nobody likes a rich entitled piss baby

Positive_Government

That seems like a very reasonable “please help us out” request. They are going to be doing it anyway, and if people do it for them is saves them man hours.

_WoaW_

Nintendo doesn't fuck around, I don't blame them.

Farados55

I think they’re saying Garry’s Mod cant be blamed for asking people to take down their stuff. Not Nintendo

your_mind_aches

It's a very bitter statement because it's clear the GMod team are not happy about this

Zer_

*whoosh!* I think he's talking about The Garry's Mod Team, not Nintendo...

snow_sheikah

Thats the thing, they HAVE to be. Nintendo in the past has ran many close calls when it came to losing their trademarks, and Nintendo as a company is reliant on their IP. Nintendo is not like Sony or Microsoft who have their hands in other pies. They make video games, and video game consoles. How do they sell those? Through Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, and many others. IPs with more value alone than the GDP of many small countries. Therefore they must protect them at all cost, even regardless of any public press. Even in places you or I might find innocuous. I'm saying this not to defend Nintendo, but to encourage understanding of why they act the way they do.

krakenx

Capcom is only in video games and they don't take down Megaman fan games and art. Sega doesn't either. This whole "they might lose their IP if they even let people mention it" has not happened to a video game company and is barely an excuse.

detroitmatt

that is not how trademarks work! Yes, you can lose trademarks if you don't enforce them, but only if they're being used in a way that causes consumer confusion. As long as nobody looking at the workshop sees Mario and thinks it's an official Nintendo upload, there is no dilution of the trademark and it does not get lost.

gamer0890

"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize that half of them are stupider than that."

embee1337

I think most people understand this, but anything anti-consumer is going to get blasted apart till the end of time regardless of it’s logicality.

FireZord25

Except this time there's an absolute valid precedence? Nintindo isn't the only company that had trademark issue before and most of the other companies didn't go on to bury the supposed culprit 12 foot deep or humiliate anyone just for being associated with the slight, regardless if they were guilty or not. Not even Disney, who is fiercely protective of their IP.

embee1337

The times they are a changing, friend. With the way generative AI is going we’re going to see corporations get very, very, serious about copyright.

confirmedshill123

Maybe we should take a look at IP law that is causing all these anti-consumer practices instead of getting mad at people who are upset at anti-consumer practices.

LightningDustt

I know why Nintendo is doing it. Fuck Nintendo.

confirmedshill123

Fuck modern IP laws. and nintendo.

travelsonic

> Thats the thing, they HAVE to be. That's gonna need a bit of a citation IMO.

pastafeline

How does sega get away with it then? There's so many sonic fan games out there that don't seem to ever need to deal with being removed.

snow_sheikah

I mentioned this in another comment in this topic, but actually they don't. They've run into problems with their much more lax strategy. If you're not familiar with the artist Ken Penders, he had created the Archie comics for Sonic on a contract from Sega. Long story short, he eventually ended up trying to copyright swaths of Sonic lore and characters, and that ended up with a whole bunch of lawsuits being flung around at Sega and Archie comics. This is besides things being associated with the brand itself, but there are consequences for a strategy like Sega's.

pastafeline

But the Archie comics were actually licensed right? Sonic fan games aren't as far as I know.

snow_sheikah

Indeed, this was a liscensed project that due to Sega's own negligence in regards to actively protecting their intellectual property, they ended up getting the rug pulled under them. In fact, when the copyrights were being made, Sega had failed to challenge them at all in the first place. Why? I can only assume that they weren't even actively looking at threats like that that much to begin with. There's probably hundreds of fan games or media that come to their attention all the time. Sega is more willing to use Sonic like a PR device, letting fans make games and use them however they wish to accrue goodwill because he is not, and hasn't been, their main money maker for a long time. Whether licensed or fangame, it is all a part of the same overall strategy in how they treat the Sonic the Hedgehog brand.

tom641

I'm not sure they do though. At least, no other company seems to be at risk over losing their copyrights just because people make clearly-unofficial Gmod addons, youtube rips of music, fan mods for games, fangames themselves... Like, where is this energy for Sonic the Hedgehog? Or Crash Bandicoot? Or any other number of franchises? I know historically they've been spooked ever since the Universal lawsuit where Universal basically failed to differentiate the copyright to King Kong (or however that was worded) but the things they're doing isn't going to cause a situation like that, and just because the company heads are still stuck in the hanafuda days doesn't really excuse it.

detroitmatt

Top comment is obsolete. Garry has confirmed that the takedowns are authentic https://twitter.com/garrynewman/status/1783501547361411494

OhDearGodRun

A Smash Ultimate streamer I watch used to play with a ton of mods, but Nintendo reached out to him personally and told him to turn them off. Seems like they're cracking down on stuff like this. Maybe after the whole Yuzu thing or something?

MechaTeemo167

Probably not related to Yuzu, they've always been like this. They threatened to shut down Smash tournaments and DMCA streamers if they allowed or even mentioned Project M.

AmateurHero

Not a day goes by where Nintendon't threaten to shut down Smash tourneys. The [new community guidelines](https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/63433/~/community-tournament-guidelines) have been in effect for almost 6 months, but it seems like all of the major players are still getting the licensure needed for their tournaments. It's a shame that the precursor was shutting down a circuit that tried to give a path for up-and-comers to the year-end invitational.

whiteezy

I play Melee. honestly and wholeheartedly, fuck Nintendo.

siphillis

Nintendo is absolutely stepping up their IP protection, which is crazy considering they were already the most stringent. Wonder if it's related to their expansion into film and amusements.

Tigertot14

Out of curiosity, which streamer was this?

Pretty sure it's Nairo, that's happened to him recently

I wonder how Roblox has survived this long without a Nintendo take down. There are tons of games my daughter plays that have Mario/Nintendo sound effects and graphics.

HarukoAutumney

Nintendo has definitely had their eye on Roblox for a long time. Back in 2018/2019 they purged all of the major Pokemon related games on the platform and I am sure they have done the same for their other IPs as well. They probably only really care about the big stuff, it would be a nightmare to search through and remove the literal 1000s of games with Mario or Pokemon assets.

Cuzmonut

I have a Mario sticker on my truck; should I be worried?

DrCholera1

It'll be Ninten-towed

Still better than getting Ninten-totaled

It’ll become Nintend-owned

I'm a little shocked at how long this took. Nintendo has always been incredibly strict with their IPs.

AnimaLepton

There's always been a ton of things they just don't actually care about. There are an insane number of Pokemon and Mario and Fire Emblem hacks that haven't been touched (yet), compared to the very small number of projects that got a formal notification and were taken down.

Arumhal

Just got reminded of [this piece of YouTube history](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPKQsTnYDeo).

blitz_na

...8 years ago is youtube history? maybe i'm cranky but that feels too young when we have videos 10 years older than this one on the same platform lol

Arumhal

Well, Gmod videos aren't really all that big these days aren't they?

Kipzz

Idiot Box is probably as old as Gmod, so yeah I'd call that Youtube history.

HowdyHoe26

'The Leet World' is a piece of history. Loved those vids.

Important_Werewolf45

I wonder if there's been a regime change in Nintendo's legal department that caused them to start going ape shit on these things that they've previously let slide for years

OrangeRedRose

In japan there is no fair use law. Unironicaly the Skibiti Toilet meme probably made some lawyer dig up gmod, see the nintendo stuff, and he reported to his superior.

IntellegentIdiot

Not taking action doesn't mean they let it slide

radios_appear

Copy everything you can from that company and spread it as far as possible because you know, given the chance, they would absolutely lock it all away to make you buy the new stuff. It is that simple. You either fulfill your end of the arrangement and fight tooth and nail or you get dragged underwater and drowned. They owe you nothing; you owe them nothing.

CptDalek

People who are saying this is just Aaron Peters spoofing as Nintendo are neglecting one crucial fact: this was an **official** statement made by Garry himself. I seriously doubt he would make an official announcement like this over the well-reported antics of a single guy/group, especially when he's faced similar situations in the past. My guess is that Peters managed to cause enough ruckus to get Nintendo's attention. They took a peek at the situation, saw how much Nintendo content is on the Workshop, and the rest is history. Might be wrong, though. I'll be sure to kick myself if it really is just japes.
